As we're all painfully aware by now, Pokémon Sword and Shield does not include a complete National Pokédex, and a great many veteran 'mon have been left out of the game. However, where there's a will, there's a way, and modders are already hard at work filling in the gaps where they can.
Twitter user SciresM has been documenting his exploits online, and managed to insert an Omastar from Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee into the latest game.
For the example shown, Yamper's entry was edited using the save editor PKHeX, but Omastar hasn't supplanted Yamper – instead, it has been given its own unique ID. The catch is that Omastar lacks some key animations that are unique to the game, such as Dynamaxing.
Another problem is filling in monsters which weren't present in the Let's Go games – 3DS models could potentially be used, but it's not yet known if it's possible. However, SciresM appears to suggest that the job isn't one he's willing to take on, and that the whole process is simply to show that it's possible to insert new models and animations into Sword and Shield.
Game Freak has already stated that a complete Pokédex won't be coming to the game, and that future sequels may also ship with an incomplete Pokédex.

I don’t blame them. Every cut Pokémon is someone’s favorite.
I would totally replay a hacked version with all or even most of the Pokemon added back in. Heck even just all the cut Kanto Pokemon from Let's Go would be worth playing a hacked version. I've got a secondary switch specifically for playing with mods. So something like this is very exciting to see!
Outside of the Let's Go Pokemon they will need to make their own models for the rest.
There's also other small tweaks like this mod that makes the trees in the Wild Zone not look as outdated as they appear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOuyFYnQIwo
I'll always respect the effort these fans go to. Kudos to them.
I feel bad for these guys because the Nintendo community knows nothing about home-brew or modding, so the call everyone hackers when a majority of Switch hackers do better than Nintendo themselves.
Good for them, I hope they add the moves back in too.
Nice. They are no longer the demographic, so this is a good option for the disgruntled
i'm wondering why different pokemon's animations were treated so inconsistently in SS. It is such a pleasure to encounter Farfetch'd for exemple, his attacks feel almost like Pokemon battle revolution.
Why can’t TPCI realize that forcing one studio to pump out games yearly is a horrible idea?
@TheDragonDAFan it’s actually extremely profitable. It’s one of the reasons Pokémon is the highest earning franchise on the planet. It’s a brilliant idea.
Will I be able to transfer them into the next game?
Sounds like more trouble than it's worth
Social and online features>>>>>>>>old Pokémon and moves
Cool. But will they do it for the next game? And the one after? And the one after that one? And so on.
I'm pretty sure GF could've just as well added all the Pokemon to this game but then we'd be facing the same dilemma all over again with the next game. Maybe people would've been more willing to accept the cuts if they did it at a point where they decided to majorly amp up the models or something but at some point they did have to make the call and that just happened to be with this game.
@Ainz Man, that's hella embarassing
And apparently it took the hacker what, a single hour according to the gamebanana page?
Christ
@GetShulked
Unless you're Silcoon, Gothita, Eelektrik, or Yungoos, that is.
Although Silcoon and Gothita didn't get cut.
Why axe them they should let players decide for themselves.
Why make a good game when you can just release incomplete products for your fans to finish? It appears that Gamefreak has learned a thing or two from Bethesda.
@cool_boy_mew I know, honestly the larger stuff like the removal of Pokémon, Moves, features, etc can be looked over if the rest was really polished but I suppose the way things were managed didn't allow for that to occur.
@Preposterous But... the game is good and "complete". This mod, with all its ingenuity, only got a single Pokemon in that had a pre-existing model and animation that was still broken in some parts.
It would be an interesting experiment to see if there's a dedicated enough modding community to "do the whole run," if it's apparently so easy.
It's really, really funny - as @ThanosReXXX might attest - we've been comparing Masuda to Thanos all along, and yet fans are the ones going "fine, I'll do it myself".
I'm not all that much into Pokémon modding, but these games have kinda been asking for it.
@Xaessya
Make? Ohh, you poor gullible soul.
@TheDragonDAFan maybe they should switch between 3 studios like COD does. The last 3 COD games were great after all 3 were the first of their devs with a 3 year development cycle. (WWII, BLOPS4 and modern warfare 0/prequel.)
@Preposterous
Well, who would have thought I could ever remember fondly the dark times. I mean, I didn't, duh, and yet here we are.
@Crockin Well duh it's profitable. But look at Activision. At least they have three separate companies who alternate releases for CoD, rather than trying to force one company to keep up a yearly timetable.
@Crockin Saying that anyone is not the targeted demographic is false, this game was marketed for everyone.
What features that are new to Sword and shield would you say are worth removing older Pokémon and moves?
@link3710 you're comparing the single biggest franchise in the world to Activision, which could fold in the blink of an eye. Dont forget that pokemon games for the time being are made to serve pokemon go, which has brought in $1billion in ad revenue(more than any pokemon product ever by a canyon of a margin)
@Kalmaro "everyone" does not include pokemon hardcores who only want the same game repackaged. This is debatable but I think the writing is on the wall here as far as pokemon console games go
@TheDragonDAFan Their release schedule does not seem to always be yearly, at least not full release wise. It's hard to get a full pattern but it seems to me their 4 year cycle is:
Mainline > Mainline+ > Remake > Break
My expectation (not my wish) would be something like:
2020 Diamond/Pearl remaster. (or a break shifting this full list a year up)
2021 Pokemon Armor(or a split ultimate version) with extra pokemon that get reworked for the Diamond/Pearl release.
2022 break (if not in 2020)
2023 next mainline pokemon
@Crockin ...and that disproves my point, how exactly? If Pokemon's making that much money, then what's the issue with having multiple developers to maintain quality? It's literally the most profitable multimedia franchise in existence.
@link3710 because they are most likely doing it in the most cost effective way they can. To you it may not be a “quality” game, but it’s launch weekend and majority of positive reviews(users and critics), would disagree. The optimizations and improvements blow pretty much every previous Pokémon out of the water, whether or not that streamlining lines up with your preferences. As I mentioned above, the demographic has changed to serve a broader audience. They will continue to see success with this.
@Crockin It's the most cost-effective way yes, but it's also not the most long term viable. There's a huge difference between short term and long term profits.
And this isn't even about Sword and Shield, this is something I've been advocating for some time. GameFreak has a history of massively overworking it's employees, and cutting features they want to implement due to strict deadlines. You keep putting TPC's demands on them and something's going to break sooner or later.
@Friscobay cuz money, man. They cut corners and didn’t put time and money into animations.
@link3710 I know that from an outsiders standpoint it would seem that way, but 25 years later and they are more successful than ever. If you think they haven't adapted to the times, that would be a mistake. Pokemon Go has generated $1billion in revenue, that came out 3 years ago. I'd say they have their long term revenue stream covered for the time being. The mainline games are there to serve that. Full stop.
It would be cool to see a Pokemon game with the same amount of detail as botw or something, but that is not in line with anything TPC has ever done, and does not align with their business model. If this is something you need, you will never get it from pokemon. I would suggest scratching the itch elsewhere.
@Crockin You literally aren't listening. I'm not asking for a BotW style Pokemon game. I just think that if they're going to continue even maintaining their current level of quality and output in the HD generation, they're going to need multiple developers.
@link3710 I know exactly what you are saying actually, and I have answered you. Pokemon Go is the priority. The mainline games(as of now), serve that. They do not need more studios, because they are able to do it in house cheaper. If the mainline games can't keep up with all the AAA titles(which has never been the case, and certainly isn't now), then they will just stop making them. They aren't as profitable as mobile games, TV shows, and many other toys/products. Really just as simple as looking at their sales.
@Yorumi exactly. The vast majority of people who but pokemon games DO NOT care about the reasons you and others online have mentioned. I know it is disappointing, but that is the reality of what pokemon has always been. I feel for the people who lost their favorite characters, but will need to accept they aren't in the demographic anymore at some point
@Crockin Everyone means everyone. There's no way to get around that. So EVERYONE is a target demographic.
@Crockin See, TPC might believe that, but that'll never happen given Nintendo's huge stake in ownership. Pokemon games sell systems, they'll never allow Pokemon to stop making main series games unless they get out of the hardware business.
@link3710 what makes you so sure Nintendo will stay in the hardware business
@Kalmaro in marketing, there is no everyone unless you are talking about toilet paper or something. And even then.
I promise you pokemon has a very specific demographic. If the hardcores and all their demands were still part of that core audience they servicing, we would not be seeing the backlash.
@Xaessya that's not true at all, the models have been the same since x and y. They would just need to update textures. And even then they technically don't have to do that.
@Yorumi actually you have every right to criticize it. TPC makes bad choices all the time from a Gamers perspective. For me, MOST pokemon games are not good. I'm just saying that hardcores are no longer the priority in the demographic, so the games at this point are kinda not really even for them. That sucks, yes. But that is what the data shows. Sorry
You mean there's more than one type of Pokemon? Damn! I've been playing it wrong all these years!
@Ainz I completely agree
I wouldn't have cared about Dexit (ok, maybe just a bit?) if it was actually the console entry we hoped it would be. Instead we got a lose/lose situation
@AlexSora89 Oh, no my friend, I'm not even touching this thread, or any Pokémon Sword/Shield thread, with a ten foot pole, from now on, so I'll pass on commenting in the midst of this ridiculous flame war...
There's a saying in life that says, you can't always have everything. You think you may but at some point one of your most precious will not be there. For example in life you got two pets that you really love, one of them died, you ain't gonna have another one like that one anymore. You can always get one more of the same creature but that one won't be the same as the one before, it may likely not like you as much or may not get along with the other pet that you still have. Pokemon is just like that, when more species are discovered and created, most of the ones you know and love will probably be left behind for the better.
@retro_player_22 This does not work like that. If I had a pug before I can always get a new pug right? But if I like Squirtle I can't get a NEW Squirtle right?
You don't always have the SAME Pokémon.
@retro_player_22 Using your pet analogy, Sword & Shield is a new apartment, where you are allowed to keep snakes, spiders, cockroaches, fish, certain breeds of dogs and cats, but not your specific pet, which is very much alive, for some arbitrary reason.
@Crockin well, at the moment, Switch hardware numbers. There's no reason to expect Nintendo to exit the hardware business after this generation, which means we have probably 3-4 generations of Pokemon to go minimum, or another 8-12 games in that time, assuming a worst possible scenario of Nintendo leaving after their next console. HD development will remain an issue for all that time unless they either significantly bulk up GameFreak or split up development duties.
That said, Nintendo presently has no competition in their niche, so I highly doubt their next console will be their last.
@link3710 there's no denying the switch is huge. Unfortunately, Nintendo is unpredictable. If their next console is a flop, they might find themselves in an age where people don't buy consoles anymore. That is coming. Not in the next gen, but eventually.
We'll just have to see how successful SwSh is after a few years. If its massive(off to a good start), that communicates to TPC/Nintendo/gamefreak that the biz model still works and that people will more than ok with pokemon generally being 2-3 gens behind.
Some folk really suck the joy out of gaming. I'm more interested in what Pokémon this new region has over making sure my own faves are in. Jeez. So depressing.
The modding community is also "fixing" aspects fans feel were neglected, like tree textures. Given enough time, I think we'll see an explosion of creativity in the modding realm; from things like user-created additional content to bug fixes/QoL improvements.
It presents an opportunity, at least. Should someone come out with a mod that extends the wild area, it may spark my interest enough to actually pick one of these up. For better or worse, Game Freak is well on their way to becoming Bethesda.
Mods are always acting to get in there own way.
I would love to see let's go modded just to add evolutions of the kanto pokemon ( Crobat, scizors, the rest of the eeveelutions etc) it be even cool to add the kanto galarian pokemon too (farfetchd, weezing, ponyta & rapidash, meowth, and mr.mine) that would be a great idea for dlc a kanto expansion pack.
People still arguing over these games, and I'm having fun with them.
@Expa0 Gamefreak just needed to not give excuses such as we are cutting this because we are doing better animations and graphics & working on more mechanics. They got caught in a lie instead they should have just said this is a decision from here on out we will be cutting down the dexes to not include as much due to the number of pokemon there is now. If they had not given those other excuses people would be mad, but they just brought more fire on themselves by not really feeding the excuses given very well.
@Friscobay At the end of the day.... even with the cut national dex, there's still 400+ of the buggers.
And that's assuming they "don't" add alolan/kanto variants of pokemons we have in the Galar Dex(which might well happened nonetheless once Pokemon Home is out, I even heard there's an NPC out there with an Alolan Meowth in her house?).
It's just to say... it's still a lot of those critters to go through and review to try and identify those that could deserve the update/etc
A side-note beyond that headline.
Yes the modder "added" a cut pokemon "back" into the game
BUT
They actually had to REPLACE an existing pokedex entry rather than being able to create a brand new one.
And
(Currently, this could change), the "cut" pokemon still uses the same moves and stats than the one whose entry it has replaced.
So while it might be possible to add "cut" pokemons , it's still harder than commenters make it sounds like.
Also another detail. Well, a huge one if you think about it:
Even if the "cut pokemon" 's stats and moves are added into the game proper... there is one thing to recall: These will likely be the same moves and stats it used into a preview entry and thus will NOT have experienced the moveset/etc review and revisions many pokemons would experience every new generations.
For example, let's just take Meowth's changes throughout the generations. And think about this, they have to do this kind of stuff EVERY new gens for EVERY generations.And think that older pokemons could still end up being transferred from older games.

Now think about it.
Every single generations saw changes.
Every single one of them, for a single pokemon. Later generations might have seen less changes but there were still notable ones that went beyond adding new moves and still ended up removing some of the moves that could be previously learned or tweaking things such that an old move now had to be acquired in a different fashion than how it was previously acquired.
And that's just a single pokemon.
Just one of hundreds.
Now also think about what I didn't list, such as Meowth's own evolution, Persian. Or abilities changes and/or additions throughout the gens too.
Not mentionned for example is the pokemons one can get moves FROM through breeding for every moves, which is another list that likely saw changes every single gens too!
And sure later gens saw less changes and we could see this as the result of designs becoming more "finalized".... which of course means Meowth had it easy in having 7 gens to be refined into his Gen7 form.
But at the same time... what if less changes in later generations was also the results that there was that much more pokemons to reviews and revises every new single gens? That there was just not enough time anymore to enact any form of major changes anymore with an ever growing national dex?
Some food for thought. Because building the pokedex is not JUST adding updated character models and/or textures at the end of the day.
It's adding everything else that's tied to that pokemon into the game beyond it's graphics.
When they say gameplay balance also played an hand in cutting the national dex.... honestly, I feel like I have to believe them on that?
I mean, there's 800+(900+ now?) of the buggers to go through in the national dex and review for every smallest of the potential revision for a new gen.
Just selecting the 400 that would make the Galardex likely had to be a big job of the design phase of the game.
my boy finally made it to the big articles 😭😭🙌!! you show them michael ♥♥!!
I love it, they get frustrated with Game Freak/TPC and say that they're going to do the work themselves to replenish the National Dex, and then they get fed up with the time and effort required to do so and say they hope someone else does it for them. XD
This would probably piss a lot of fans off and get them to accuse Nintendo of withholding Pokemon from the games to milk customers later, but maybe Nintendo should add Pokemon as DLC.
@GetShulked Ain't that the truth, the vast majority of my favourites were all cut. Only like Weavile and Flygon made it in, and they're not even technically my favourites of their types, I just like them a lot.
A model swap is the easiest mod you can do. No stats, no movesets, no dynamax, no detailed animations. And thats just a Let's Go model. Anything after Gen 1 will have the same model but the textures will need a massive overhaul, and new texture information as the 3DS and Switch do not use the same file system for the games. This simple model swap doesn't and shouldn't impress anyone that knows what happens behind the scenes of these games.
@UltraLaserTen The Omanyte shown here is actually a modified Yamper, so I assume the next game would detect it as a Yamper too and it wouldn't look like an Omanyte at all. Of course that's just speculation, that's all we have for now.
@Crockin want the same game? No one want the exact same game....
The hardcore only want a high quality game with all the Pokémon, we want NPCs to load before we see them and not appearing out of thin air because this look just bad
We want all the content and more instead of cut content
And most of all, we don’t want to have certain Pokémon locked in a cloud behind a pay wall until one day, in a year? 2 years? 5 years???? We will have a game that we can transfer them into
Game freak did an EA while EA actually did a Nintendo
Wired times....
@Tantani I don't think you know TPC too well. You will never get all those things in one game. Wired times indeed my friend.
@Ludovsky are you ok
@Crockin because the are cheap! This is the biggest franchise in the world!
Game freak is rich AF! And they are backed up by Creatures and Nintendo!
Smaller budget games have those features, most of the game assents were copied from gen 7, and come on, loading the characters before you see them is a basic of the basic
We are in 2019, not 1996
@Yorumi exactly!
I loved Pokémon all my life, started playing in gen 3 and of course later played the previous generations and every gen after
This is the first time I am considering not buying the games, and I was super hyped until the e3 2019....
This is just sad. Personally I don't think the game would be as fun if you just transferred over everything from before? I have no issue with starting our fresh and exploring this new region. My only annoyance has been being able to freely move the camera around in the wild areas and then everywhere else it doesn't xD
@Yorumi that's true.
Though I suspect that Sword and Shield has indeed taken them as much ressources than they claim(move sets revision is a thing and they already had to do that for hundreds of pokemons) which is why the game currently is in this state....AND that GF's statements might have been a bit less hard in stone than we think.
We know from datamining what's in the game but I noticed one thing that seems to be glaringly missing for a pokemon game.
First we know of returning legendaries and mythicals/"hidden" returning starters from the 35 pokemons already in the game but without a pokedex number(yet having entries and an interestingly useful "foreign" tag).
But there's one thing that seem to be missing. And glaringly so:
Brand new Mythical pokemons for Galar .
And I highly doubt the anime and movies are going to have a new region without new mythicals to make movies about.
So I think it's nigh-confirmed we can expect new pokemons to indeed be added later because that might be the only ways these mythicals will be added.
And the "foreign" tag is perfect for more "foreign" pokemons to be added later be it through event updates or else(S&S compatible Gen 8 Sinnoh remakes?).
At this rate the comments about national dex might just be a way of covering their rear if they can't add updated version of ALL the pokemons even in that fashion.
Of course we'll only have the final answer through Sword&Shield's state 1-2 years from now.
I have been looking for a list of the Pokemon CUT from these games, does anyone know of one?
Just curious, really.
I imagine these are the same people who have been complaining about the game causing hardware issues.
@Crockin I'm not convinced that people will stop buying consoles. ebooks didn't kill paper books. "With music streaming nobody is buying CDs any more" and suddenly you can buy new albums on frigging vinyl records again! All the streaming services combined still can't offer every movie or TV series I own on DVD/Blu-ray. And Nintendo will continue to be a hardware company for a long time.
@Yorumi at the same time can we say that the game are still ones with crazy amount of content which in itself can affect time/ressources that can be allocated to everything else?
Like, it was during an interview for Black and White that Masuda claimed they would never cut the pokedex but B&W still used 2d sprites for combat and pokemons.
Meanwhile it's specifically since the switch to 3D graphics and continually growing pokedex that they've begun to really struggle more.
And while this doesn't excuse stuff that some people complain about S&S it should be recalled that the news drop that the pokedex would be cut came in very late while a lot of previous info about pokemon home had implied that things would continue as usual.
So I suspect that cutting the pokedex happened during development rather than before... which could mean that for a while time and resource still ended being decided to the national dex before they had to abandon the thing in the first place... which could still have affected other things even if the outcome was still a national dex.
Content that's cut can still have ended affecting other aspect of development if they waited too long before realizing they had to cut it.
So S&S' development might literally be that of a game that tried to have a national dex berfore realizing it wouldn't be doable under their schedule leading to an hurried version with the current cut dex.
@Yorumi I agree with this.
If I heard prior to this game's announcement that it would feature less Pokemon than XY, I would have anticipated an overall for the battle animations. Making the turn-based combat look much more lively.
The game as it is now doesn't really feature anything that I wouldn't imagine not being there regardless of Dexit.
@Yorumi I’m currently replying the first coliseum game on my GameCube and having a blast. I totally love starting with an espeon and umbreon while doing double battles every time.
@Yorumi I think that, more than any past game, we should consider the current postgame with a grain of salt.
And I say this because there's already one glaring yet near-essential omission in the content that I doubt especially the anime studios would let slide... unless that omission was already planned by simply being added later.
From the current pokedex we know every missing and returning pokemons. We even know from datamining of returning pokemons/legendaries/mythical of past gens that have data in the game despite not being in the pokedex.
But while everyone focused on the stuff missing from past games, almost nobody noticed there isn't a gen 8 mythical.
So i'll take the current pokedex and content with a grain of salt because if it misses the essential movie-fodder that new gens mythicals are... then it's likely that we should consider that there's content that's non-final right now.
Especially when they have something as mutable as the wild area(whose spawns and content can be changed without affecting the story) to be used in accordance to time limited and online events.
Also you mentioned the superior animation of Colosseum.
But that game had still less pokemons to deal with AND much smaller of a world to develop environments for afaik?
Hold on a second, comment section! You should be outraged by this fellow, as the single article you cited "debunking" the saves deletion glitch stated that it happened on hacked consoles only.
Not every Smash Bros game has all the Smash Bros characters. But it's cool we have one that does. Im fine with a future Pokemon game trying to get them all in there, I don't need this one to. Then again, when your catch phrase is, "Gotta catch em all"....
Enjoying the game so far...not having every single Pokemon isn't a dealbreaker for me....but it would also be be pretty amazing to see.
@WillTheLion i mean there's no point anymore since emummc is a thing lol
@Ludovsky Isn't Meltan the Gen 8 Mythical? I thought Meltan was announced as the Gen 8 Mythical Pokémon which they will introduce via special event in Pokémon Go and Let's Go. Meltan and Melmetal's Nat. Dex nos. is 808 & 809 which comes before Grookey, like Victini comes before Snivy. I even saw through data miners that Melmetal has a Gigantamax form, which other mythicals lacked. Like Zacian and Zamagenta, Meltan/Melmetal also absorbs metal.
@Yorumi I wonder where are my GBA.... or at least my ds, it’s backwards compatibility should do the trick lol
and I want to Set up my we and play Pokémon colosseum property (when I was young I only played the battle simulator, I need to play it the way it was intended lol)
@ThanosReXXX
You are one wise titan.
@AlexSora89 Well, maybe not all the time, since I already stepped into a couple of articles to be able to come to that conclusion, but I do have my moments...
@Danjo possibly but iirc Meltan already exists in Go/Let's Go(which are considered part of "gen 7" informally?).
Like, iirc one basically had to go transfer back and forth with Go/Let's Go to actually evolve Meltan into Melmetal iirc
@guamyankee i still suspect that gen8 won't have the full pokedex when gen9 rolls in but I do think there will be more than just the galar pokedex by the end of thing
@ThanosReXXX
You're the Thanos we deserve.
@AlexSora89 "This is ThanosReXXX's voicemail. Unfortunately, I'm not available in any Pokémon or Pokémon "fan" war-related thread. If you leave a message in another thread or article comment section, I might just feel like replying... "
@ThanosReXXX
[k-beeep] "Oh, hey there, Thanos. I just wanted you to know that I won't bother with Pok--err, I mean, I won't bother you with Pokémon anymore. I'll tag you in another thread, who knows! No need to reply to this message, though. I... I'll call you back!" [k-beep-boop-boop-boop...]
@Xaessya
What are you talking about? Let's Go! SW/SH are using the models made for the 3DS games aside from new Pokemon. They'd have to make higher res textures and import the format, but they won't have to make new models.
@Preposterous good thing Sword and Shield is a good game then.
