Re: Random: Fans Take A Dig At Nintendo's Limited-Time Mario Antics With Blade Runner-Style Parody Video

Seacliff

@Paraka That's... not how it works.
There's no such thing as 'clearance' when it comes to Nintendo. Prices are going to only rise once stock is cut.

An MMO eventually getting cut makes sense because it requires constant server maintenance, and also needs to frequently add content to stay relevant. There is no additional maintenance to keep Mario 3D All-Stars in the eshop compared to the two thousand other games on the online storefront.

Re: Introducing Pokémon Legends: Arceus, An Open-World Prequel To Diamond And Pearl

@Zach777 "Pokémon Sword and Shield do fine for what they intend to do and are better than any of their predecessors."

If any other RPG had combat that could easily be won in single attacks and a storyline that almost entirely happens off-screen, it would have been torn to shreds.

There's very little about Sword and Shield that holds up when compared to other games of the same genre.

"Just Ok" is not ok, and that's assuming Sword and Shield are even that much.

Re: Sonic Writer Talks About His Love-Hate Relationship With The Fandom

Seacliff

I used to completely bash on Sonic 06's story, and I still think it's still a pretty bad story, but I can appreciate it as something closer to what I want in a Sonic game than Forces. I can appreciate trying give Shadow more development when the character was only really planned for one game, I can appreciate adding a new protagonist like Silver with their own motives and beliefs. I can't say they succeeded in what they set out to do, but I had more unironic enjoyment watching Sonic 2006's cutscenes than I did Forces.

Adventure 1 and 2, while still having sloppy execution with their stories, I think still have the best framework of what to have with a Sonic script. There's actual stakes the characters in the story take seriously, but there's still humor without tonal whiplash.

I agree that it's weird to get worked up about Sonic storylines and I wouldn't even post a comment about this ten years ago, but having something resembling a plot that explains why you went from one stage to the next defiantly separates Sonic from a lot of other early 3D platformers. Nowadays, with games like Crash 4 and A Hat in Time, stories in 3D platformers are a lot more common, so there's nothing wrong for wanting a 3D platformer plot to at least be decent.

Re: Poll: Rate Your Favourite SNES Games

Seacliff

Being from America, I didn't grow up with it, but IMO Terranigma is absolutely one of the best games on the console.

The rest of my picks are pretty obvious though. Except Secret of Mana, I really don't like, or even understand the love, for that game.

Re: Hands On: Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Makes You Wish You Didn't Know How It Ends

Seacliff

The time travel leads to a bit of an ultimatum that rips my interest out of the story.

Either the time travel exist to change the plotline into a 'good-end' where the heroes win, and any interesting scenes I was hoping to finally see don't end up happening. Or it does still lead to the bad ending, making the time traveling a frivolous plot device that prevented us from actually seeing what happened 100 years ago while still leading to the same results.

Either way, between this and the game's framerate my interest in the game has defiantly fallen.

Re: Feature: Every 3D Sonic The Hedgehog Game Ranked

Seacliff

I loved Colors around the time it came out, but it's novelty wears out each passing year. It doesn't control well in either 2D or 3D, and many of the levels aren't that great. The graphics look good for the Wii, but it doesn't mean much when sandwiched between Unleashed HD and Generations.

It's still not a bad game, but I can never finish it whenever replaying it despite it's short length. It's defiantly better than Wii Unleashed, so I'm fine with it's ranking placement.

Re: Paper Mario Producer Says "It's A Necessity" To Change The Combat System In Every Entry

Seacliff

Turn Based Combat is Extrinsic in nature, meaning the prime motivator are the growth of stats that determine a character's strength.

A lot of Mario games, especially 64, Sunshine, and Odyssey, are Intrinsic, meaning the prime motivator is to enhance your skills at the game, namely mastering Mario's movement.

I think their goal was to make a turn based game driven by Intrinsic motivation, but I don't think Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami King are either Extrinsic or Intrinsic games. There are very very light elements of each, like HP upgrades or the time button presses, but neither are core motivators to progress the game itself.

I wonder if the difference between people who enjoy or don't enjoy these games lies in the difference if some people are motivated to progress in a game for the sake of progression. By the same standards, that's technically how reading a Visual Novel works. However, the additional constraint is that Paper Mario's paper thin story might divide this camp even further.

For me, at least. When I play an RPG, I like to see the statistics reflect the experience the characters in the game have while I adjust their equipment, skills, and abilities. When I play a platformer, I like the master a character's movement to overcome challenging obstacles. And when I read a Visual Novel, I just want to experience a good story.

The jokes in Origami King, while enjoyable, isn't enough to motivate me.

Re: Poll: Did The Nintendo Direct Mini: Partners Showcase Meet Your Expectations?

Seacliff

The announcement of SMT games were great, but it's not the presentation Nintendo needs to be showing at the moment and it's not the information the fans have been asking for.

We skipped E3 and there's now a massive hole in the release schedule, I believe this direct would have been better received if we at least knew even one or two of holiday titles.

Re: Harvest Moon Publisher Natsume Working On "Exciting New Projects" For This Year And Beyond

Seacliff

@wantmew 'stole' was a figure of speech. The issue is that Natsume could have created their own franchise, but decided to lean on the brand recognition of an already established franchise. I respect them for localizing the titles for nearly two decades, and I'll respect that they still own the name. However, remakes of older Harvest Moon games are being rebranded as Story of Seasons games, making Natsume self-devoloped games a different franchise, making their current use of the trademark is misleading at best.

Re: Feature: Nihon Falcom President On Trails Of Cold Steel III And Bringing The Long-Running JRPG Series To Switch

Seacliff

I'm interested of the perspective of someone who will inevitably start with this game, but I can't recommend it. A lot of my enjoyment of this game is seeing plot threads from prior games, some of which were introduced back in Sky 1, continue to develop.

I imagine it had to have done well in Japan though for them to already announced Cold Steel 4 for the Switch alongside the localization announcement.

I know the whole NIS and Xseed thing keeps them from porting earlier games, but I think that also puts Falcom at a minor fault of not taking advantage of the Nintendo install base much sooner. The Trails in the Sky games would have been an amazing fit for the 3DS, where a lot of other JRPGs thrived, for example.

Re: The Legend Of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV Announced For Nintendo Switch

Seacliff

@Dualmask Heavily disagree with this. Cold Steel 3 plot is heavily based around the aftermath of 1 and 2. Even the new characters have their backstories shaped by pre-established events and characters.

If you start with Cold Steel 3, Rean is going to have a bloated backstory with at least six key time periods (Life before adoption, life after adoption, life as a student, time spent in the Civil war, time spent as a government dog defending Crossbell from Calivard, and time as a unit in the Northern War), as opposed to just two at the start of Cold Steel 1. The same will be true for Olivier, Sara, and really any major character who was still an adult before the events of Cold Steel 1.
