Re: Ubisoft's Switch 2 Physical Release Of Star Wars Outlaws Is A "Game-Key Card"

Samalik

@MrDocena
I mean, of course the AAA companies are gonna use that as an argument. Just like how they used the argument that a game failed because it wasn't "live service" or that layoffs are for the "betterment of the company's health" because they are too poor to pay anyone other than their CEO $100m a year.

These people have the slimy arguments of a cult leader to justify their actions.

@Solid_Python Being informed before you buy is not a bad thing, man. You don't have to read the article.

@vincentgoodwin
I feel like Nintendolife really has got a bone to pick with these Game-Key cards & it's getting embarrassing & tiring. Let it go.
Because caring about ownership advocacy is somehow a bad thing and worthy of shaming others over. "Don't ask questions. just consume product and get excited for next product."

1. It costs a lot less to manufacture a game-key card that putting the data on the cartridge.
And why do YOU care about that? This is not your business to care about. Your business is to ask for the best possible product. Why defend the company for cheaping out?

2. It's better than a code-in-a-box because I can loan these to my friends or sell them.
Wait til a game company that didn't pay their taxes has their game revoked from the download queue because the government demanded it. It already happened with a Company called Sol Press in the VN sphere and caused those who bought their VNs to lose access to them.

3. Game-Key Cards were already present on Switch 1 (see Just Dance or NBA 2K games)
and people were pissed then when AAA companies cheaped out. Why is this suddenly an argument in favor of them?

4. Most games get Day 1 Patches or just patches in general, so the idea of a game being completely playable off the cartridge is a ship that's sailed.
I'm sorry, who is this most? Because most games on the switch were AAs and indies, and they usually released content-complete in box. I should know, that is most of my library.

@jowy_sw In the context of Polygon and especially Kotaku? "Virtuous" racism, "virtuous" sexism and anything that would make Metal Gear as a franchise become disappointed in this future.

By "virtuous", I mean spending time attacking people for "hating women", (for example), while having a holier than thou grandstanding attitude that screams "I see women as weak and lesser minority and therefore needs to be coddled"

It's kinda nasty when you realize that is what they are doing, while also trying to make that the primary feedback developers get and follow, skewing the industry's creative allowance in a nasty direction that causes even the people they are trying to "protect" to raise an eyebrow.

Of course there's also the occasional complaining about the current politics like in a review of hardware that has nothing to do with it to the point of derailing the article, but that is something we can also all agree is kinda bonkers that it even happened once on a professional gaming website. 🤣

Re: Editorial: Gamers, Support The People And Sites You Love, Before It's Too Late

Samalik

@Zeldinion so would you mind telling me how a manga like Non Non Biyori is political then? because I don't see it.

Art is fundamentally Communication and creativity through abstract but human means. That communication is not always political, but merely amusement and nothing more. To say "all art is political on a fundamental level" is to become blinded by politics and only see political control through art, not self-expression in its rawest form.

Can <arcade> shooters be erotic, though?

Have you ever heard of Go Go Burunyanman EXTACY? It's really high quality, practically up there with a lot of quality shmups and memorable eroge because of how cute n funny it is (no euphemism). Unfortunately, the only option to play the game is piracy because the Japanese PC store is region locked, and it still doesn't have a English fan patch, and the dev is really hard to get ahold of because they closed down/dormiented their studio. So the hopes of an official English release seems to be slim

Re: Opinion: Cult Classic 'Tokimeki Memorial' Hits Switch - But 30 Years On, It’s Still Out Of Reach

Samalik

@FX29 That's one thing that probably bugs me about reviews. they always label those games as having or being dating sims, but the way the mechanics work lack a lot of the nuance of building a relationship. Just fighting together isn't all there is to it. That's why i feel like a new term like "bond-lite mechanics" is long overdue, because they are not ever coming close to the level of romance simulation of the originals with the way the typical action or strategy RPGs are normally structured, treating it like a stat that unlocks the next optional bond scene.

Re: Best 4K TVs For Nintendo Switch 2

Samalik

Can you tell the difference between 60fps and 120fps?
Yes, you can. If you play a game for long enough in 120 and go back to 60, you will notice a difference. this is not a skin deep question. People asked this same question from the move from 30fps to 60fps back in the day with the same "I don't notice it" until they do after prolonged exposure. In competitive action games or arcade games, higher refresh rate is life or death because of how your brain gathers information. Thinking type RPGs like Dragon Quest, less so required.

Re: Street Fighter 6 Releasing Final 'Year 2' Fighter Alongside Switch 2 Game Launch

As previously revealed, Capcom will also be releasing a 22 amiibo card set... -which will give you the ability to save and load your character's outfit, their control-style, and also receive special items.

Smart. Really smart. Definitely gonna streamline tournaments past "test matches" that start before the real game.
I had this idea before, but glad they are finally implementing it into a fighter.

Re: "We MUST Resist Buying These Game-Key Releases", Says GamesMaster Host

Samalik

@WiltonRoots @WheresWaveRace

That's implying a classic even gets the respect it deserves. It took Nintendo 20 years to do anything with Fzero GX. Imagine if the Wii's games stopped working when the servers shut down, even if you own the disc. I don't care if you've already given up @Grimley141, but I do care about taking away an option, all because a company decided to turn off their servers when they see it as a liability to keep them running or maybe just get bored. No other product comes to mind where a company is allowed to break what you physically own on such a whim. It's ridiculous.

Additionally, some classics DON'T get re-released. I do not see a port of, say, Rodea the Sky Soldier happening anytime soon, considering Kadokawa has already forgotten about their own IP and Yuji Naka is.... well.... yeah. it's ridiculous that only the 10% of all gaming history is even allowed a re-release to begin with. That's a factoid that comes from the Video Game History Foundation, so you know it ain't bull coming outta me.

Re: Minecraft Is Getting A Graphics Upgrade

Samalik

@LadyCharlie That's unfortunately the thing that happens with a lot of "now with ray tracing" games. They lose a lot of their original art direction if favor of hyper realistic lighting.

If you look at Quake and then play it with raytracing, or hell, any emulator of a retro game with RTX, it makes you ask.... why?!?!
I mean it's obvious why. "Shiny new tech" and that's pretty much it.

Re: Minecraft Is Getting A Graphics Upgrade

Samalik

@rvcolem1 I mean, I don't play these games either. It's clearly more of a "creativity" kinda game, which I don't always gel with since I'm more into art and storytelling person who prefers to pick up the pen and craft a character. (at least, when I'm allowed to)

Re: Random: Sega Surprises Sonic The Hedgehog Fans With Official Timeline

Samalik

@MirrorFate2 I'm pretty sure that was probably a Pontaff localization in Generations.
In the grand scheme of the world timeline, they are unimportant. But still, I'd like the acknowledgement that Sonic actually said and did all of those things in Black Knight.

Edit: yeah, the page is called "World History", so it seems like I was on the money compared to it being called "Adventure History"

Re: Random: Sega Surprises Sonic The Hedgehog Fans With Official Timeline

Samalik

@Hydra_Spectre That's where we run into a problem. Prime was called canon in terms of the real world canon. You can see that in the original interview that mentioned it. But fans kept taking that too seriously.

It doesn't help that the series is Japanese to begin with, so all of the western original stuff, Mobius included, are not close to canon.

And the less said about Sonic's characterization, the better.

Re: AI Upscaling On Nintendo Switch 2 Is Basically Real Thanks To Updated Patent

Samalik

@Jhena Imagined? No. It's not imagined like Gen AI. It's using the game itself as reference, and is correcting bad frames before they are even shown on screen, making it so that the game always runs smooth. It is very reliant on Nvidia's hardware, which in itself is also the Switch's hardware.
Here's some explanations:

And this is just DLSS 1. We are currently on DLSS 4

Re: AI Upscaling On Nintendo Switch 2 Is Basically Real Thanks To Updated Patent

Samalik

@Jhena But it does. Look up digital foundry tests. It's not a fake upscaler. This is Nvidia level tech.

If you are using "true motion", then no wonder it looks like crap. That's not tech built into the game's code. DLSS is what makes action games more playable at high levels. That's how good it is. And knowing what we know on the Switch 2's hardware, it's gonna be mandatory for that reason, as the console is also gonna use Nvidia's chipsets

Re: AI Upscaling On Nintendo Switch 2 Is Basically Real Thanks To Updated Patent

Samalik

@Jhena Again, you will not notice it. Play Doom Eternal on PC or another game with DLSS built in on PC and tell me how much you notice compared to some chepo aftermarket plugNplay "enhancer"

It only makes the games run better on weaker hardware. Chances are you already went through DLSS-styles upscales on switch as is but didn't notice. That's how you know it works
