Re: Ed Boon Would "Love" To See A Mortal Kombat Character In Smash Bros. Ultimate

SKTTR

I think Scorpion (Mortal Kombat) deserves as much a spot on the Smash roster as other fighting icons like Mitsurugi (SoulCalibur), Heihachi (Tekken), Haohmaru (Samurai Shodown), and Fulgore (Killer Instinct).

I can see Scorpion being depicted as not more brutal than Ridley (spear) or Bowser (flame).
His Final Smash could be a Babality finisher, that would be hilarious!

People don't play Mortal Kombat for its gore anymore, but for its lore.
Every MK game added to the story. The first games had an intro and an ending for every character. And the story mode in MK11 is great.

Scorpion is a huge fighting game icon. Has been for decades. Even before the first Smash game. For me a fighting game character like Scorpion makes more sense than a character from literally any other genre - though I love to have a selection from characters of all genres.

Anyway, in my opinion Scorpion would make a great Smash bro, just like Doomguy. They may be brutal/dumb for some, but you can't deny them having great games in the series and being a huge part of cultural gaming history - not just for their content, but for their gameplay as well.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #30 - Quest 64 / Holy Magic Century

SKTTR

@EarthboundBenjy For Gamecube there's also

  • Cubivore: Survival of the Fittest (remake of N64's Japan-only hack & slay evolution RPG Doubutso Banchou, this time available in Japan AND North America BUT unfortunately still not in Europe)
  • Summoner 2: A Goddess Reborn (PS2 remake, action-adventure RPG with a variety of fantasy characters that all have unique skills that are useful even outside of battle)
  • Evolution Worlds (Dreamcast remake, short dungeoncrawl RPG with round-based battles)
  • Probably many others. I will check later what I missed.

And for N64 I found there are at least 3 more RPGs in Japan not mentioned yet. Super Robot Taisen, and two fishing RPGs by the folks who made Harvest Moon. The series is known as Legend of the River King, and it got great reviews, but only the 2 Game Boy Color games were released in the west in 1999 and 2001. The two N64 versions, Nushi Tsuri 64 (1998) and Nushi Tsuri 64: Shiokaze Ninotte (2000) unfortunately stayed in Japan. There were many more games in the series, with only 2 more ever releasing in the west: the PS2 got River King: A Wonderful Journey in 2005 and the Nintendo DS got River King: Mystical Valley in 2007. Anyway, let's update the N64 RPG counter to 13 (and the Gamecube RPG counter to 13 as well).

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #30 - Quest 64 / Holy Magic Century

SKTTR

I completed Holy Magic Century though it was a chore. It's not a bad game, just very mediocre. The only problem I had with it was that areas (fields, caves) were so huge and barren that after a random battle I often walked into the wrong direction back to where I entered the zone. It's also the only RPG I ever played where you don't receive money so there's no buying or selling items.

@EarthboundBenjy
Five. Hybrid Heaven and then you have all the RPGs for the system released in the west. Though I know Japan also got a Shiren The Wanderer (Mystery Dungeon) RPG and Doubutsu Banchou (Cubivore). So make that 7.

@KitsuneNight
I have both games. Shadowgate 64: Trials of the Four Towers is a first-person-adventure with no RPG elements. And Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is an action-adventure just like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask or the two Castlevania 64 games. I'd argue that Harvest Moon 64, Wonder Project J2, Mega Man 64, Gauntlet Legends, the 3 Pokémon Stadium games, and the original Animal Crossing might have more light RPG elements.

@KingMike
Wow, I never heard of Zool: Majū Tsukai Densetsu before. Now we're at eight RPGs for the system. The two Custom Robo games though, I don't think they're real RPGs, but I guess you could count them as light RPGs if you count games like Monster Hunter where you don't level up by stats but by equipment. And yeah, PD UltraMan Battle Collection also looks very RPG-y but I don't understand anything that goes on in this game. Now if we count that and Robot Ponkottsu 64 (another weird one that got a GBC game in the west called Robopon), then were at 10 RPGs for the N64! Great! xD

Re: After Being Review-Bombed, AI: The Somnium Files Is Now The Highest User-Rated Switch Game On Metacritic

SKTTR

The reviews that I find helpful are the ones where the reviewer completed the game, has years of knowledge in the genre (approx. 100 games in that genre completed and at least 25 years of experience), and knows what information people want to know.

I think under 20 years of experience is still just gamer (especially when someone has only 4 hardware generations of knowledge). About 25 years and knowledge of the history of videogames, retro and classic, and you can call yourself a reviewer.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Wanted Sora In Smash Bros. Ultimate, But Got Rejected By Disney

SKTTR

I don't like Sora or Kingdom Hearts and this news is like one character slot not wasted. I never thought Sora would be a good representation without Disney characters anyway. If Square Enix is going to add another fighter it should look more like this:

Crono (Chrono Trigger) > Randy (Mana series) > Ark (Terranigma/Quintet series rep) > Bubble Bobble / Space Invaders (Taito rep) > Marina Liteyears (Mischief Makers) > Geno (Mario RPG) > Lara Croft > More FF or DQ (like Sephiroth and Slime) > > > > > Sora

If Disney wants to join in the fun I'd love if they gave us someone they bought up from Lucas Arts: Purple Tentacle (from the classic Maniac Mansion) or Guybrush Threepwood (from Monkey Island), true gaming icons of many childhoods, and we don't have a point&click-adventure fighter in the game apart from Another Code and Hotel Dusk spirits.

Re: Sakurai Knows Smash Bros. Has Too Many Fire Emblem Characters, But It's Nintendo's Fault

SKTTR

I hoped we don't get a new Fire Emblem or Pokémon character. And now it seems we get both. One half of the worst case scenario already got real. No, I'm overreacting, there could be even worse choices than those.

However, there's enough Fire Emblem and Pokémon promotion in the game. Every Smash player, from Melee onwards, has checked out Fire Emblem (and Pokémon) already and either liked it or not. With 7 Fire Emblem fighters in the game (and Chrom already being a newcomer), and 3 stages, and tons of music, Assist Trophies, and 78 spirits, there was more than enough FE coverage in Ultimate already. Byleth just has very little impact.

Ah well, even though she's a disappointment for being from an overrepresented series, I like her as a fighter and the stage is beautiful so that's good. And we still have 6 characters to dream about.

Re: Nintendo Was "Fine" With Platinum Releasing The Wonderful 101 Remaster On Other Platforms

SKTTR

The port of exclusive Wii U/Switch games to other platforms, we've seen it before.
With Devil's Third (Wii U) and Octopath Traveler (Switch).

Now Nintendo loosend their grip on another rather unsuccessful Wii U / Switch couple:
The Wonderful 101 (Wii U) and DAEMON X MACHINA (Switch).

It's just that Nintendo takes their worst performing games, and gives the original devs the freedom to do better (or at least get some more popularity) elsewhere.

Re: Rare Explains How It Worked With Nintendo On Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Banjo-Kazooie DLC

SKTTR

@Ventilator: Yeah, Microsoft probably does not change the original plans or stop the halfway-in Switch developments of these studios. Microsoft let them finish their Switch games, even after the acquisition. However, these games are now released under Microsofts ownership, they are not being canceled even though Microsoft could. So they technically count as Microsoft games. And that's what counts for me. It's not a matter of being right or wrong. Microsoft could cancel those Switch games if they wanted to, just like they canceled Kameo for Gamecube which was also halfway through development.

Re: Rare Explains How It Worked With Nintendo On Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Banjo-Kazooie DLC

SKTTR

@Ventilator I don't. These are all Microsoft Switch games in my book.

Knights and Bikes (by Double Fine)
Double Fine was acquired by Microsoft in June 2019. Knights and Bikes is the first Double Fine game for Switch that was released after Microsoft's acquisition.

The Outer Worlds and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Ultimate Edition (both by Obsidian Entertainment)

Obsidian Entertainment was acquired by Microsoft in November 2018. These are the second and third Obsidian games for Nintendo Switch that will be released after Microsoft's acquisition. The first one was Pillars of Eternity - Complete Edition.

Minecraft Dungeons
Minecraft was bought by Microsoft in September 2014. Minecraft Dungeons is going to be the fifth Minecraft game for Switch (after Minecraft - Nintendo Switch Edition, Minecraft ''Bedrock Edition'', Minecraft: Story Mode - The Complete Adventure, and Minecraft: Story Mode - Season Two. It's also the 8th Minecraft game for a Nintendo console if you count the two Wii U games and the New Nintendo 3DS game.

Re: Rare Explains How It Worked With Nintendo On Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Banjo-Kazooie DLC

SKTTR

@Ventilator Microsoft stopped Switch support? And what's with the recently released Smash Cuphead Mii costume? What's with the recently released game Knights and Bikes on Switch (which, by the way, is Microsoft's 10th Switch game)? What's with the upcoming The Outer Worlds, the upcoming Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Ultimate Edition, and the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons? I still see plenty of Microsoft support on Switch. No sign of them stopping.

Re: SNK Reveals Second Season Of DLC Fighters For The Samurai Shodown Reboot

SKTTR

Samurai Shodown VI (PS2) / Samurai Shodown Anthology (Wii) was what Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is, by having a complete fighting roster where everyone ever was playable.
The new game looks great (haven't played it yet) but it seems it's missing so many characters.
It's not the same hype level of reveal when all you get are characters that should have been in there from the beginning.

Haohmaru for Soulcalibur? Honestly, I wanted Haohmaru in Smash over Terry, but yeah, King of Fighters is the more popular SNK franchise of the two (and Terry is dope as heck, too.)

Re: Talking Point: Would You Like Miiverse To Return On Switch?

SKTTR

Loved it. Miiverse was great for uploading screenshots to show progress, highscores, and bugs, and for talking about specific games in general, or to ask for help, or to talk to devs, and to find people to play with, or just to watch the art some great people painstakingly pixeled.

Re: DOOM Director Says The Team Has "Bantered" With Nintendo Asking For Doomguy In Smash Bros.

SKTTR

The DOOM Marine doesn't need to come with any controversial imagery and he can be toned down in his moveset to be not more harmful than Bayonetta, Joker, Snake, and even Ridley. He doesn't need to "rip and tear", he doesn't need a realistic shotgun. Because he won't fight against evil demons in Smash. He'd just be a human that brought peace to the world, a relatively nice bloke under these circumstances. After slaying millions of evil demons, a Smash Invitation is just a cool sports tournament for him. He'd be using his new grapple hook and showing off his N64-exclusive laser weapon again leaving the chainsaw home. The BFG9000 would be programmed to Smaaaash instead of Shrrrred! I don't see a problem, I could make him fit.

Re: Review: Puzzle & Dragons Gold - Sadly, Not Everything That Glitters Is Gold

SKTTR

Gacha was not a big problem in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 because

1. You started with Rare Blades, and they each had their own story quests and skill trees that took hours to complete. Once you completed a Rare Blade you already have found 10 new Rare Blades just by playing the game normally

and

2. Even if you didn't get a Rare Blade [5 Stars] you could also get a 4-Star-Blade, which is sometimes even more powerful and just as valuable to keep.

The only gacha problem for me personally would be when I want to repeat the game and have to collect them all again. That would be too repetitive! But the game has a NewGame+ feature thankfully, so you keep everything and you never have to do the Gacha stuff again.

Xenoblade 2 had a bigger problem. The world and characters are just not as good as the world and characters of Xenoblade 1 and Xenoblade X.

Re: Video: Let's Talk About Byleth In Smash Bros. And The Fourth House In Fire Emblem: Three Houses

SKTTR

I love Fire Emblem, but three or four characters (in Smash) is enough to represent a whole franchise and to draw in new people to the series.

Eight characters is overkill, especially when there's still not a single fighter from Chibi-Robo, Advance Wars, Sin and Punishment, Golden Sun, Custom Robo, ARMS, Rhythm Heaven, Doshin, Project Zero, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Endless Ocean, Another Code, Hotel Dusk, Professor Layton, Joy Mech Fight, StarTropics, 1080°, Wave Race, Excitebike, Dillon's Rolling Western, Pullblox, etc.

It would be nice for some of the solo fighters to get a team partner as well: F-ZERO, Xenoblade, Pikmin, and Punch-Out!! come to mind instantly.

Re: Poll: Are You Happy With Smash Bros. Ultimate Challenger 5?

SKTTR

A few days ago when someone asked me I answered it would be underwhelming if we get another Fire Emblem or Pokémon character, since this gen of Smash already got Chrom and Incineroar and there are already so many of them while other franchises are underrepresented.

But ending the Fighters Pass with a Nintendo character, even Fire Emblem, is still better than a questionable 3rd Party like Sora or Dante.

Re: Feature: So, Who's Next For Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

SKTTR

Of the eligible ones:

1. Travis Touchdown (No More Heroes)
2. Prof. Layton
3. Phoenix Wright
4. Pete (Harvest Moon)
5. Crono (Chrono Trigger)
6. Bub & Bob (Bubble Bobble)
7. Wonder Boy
8. Ark (Terrangima)
9. Conker (Conker's Bad Fur Day)
10. Fulgore (Killer Instinct)

Of the deconfirmed ones:

1. Chibi-Robo
2. Saki Amamiya (Sin and Punihsment)
3. Elma (Xenoblade Chronicles X)
4. Bomberman
5. Goemon (Mystical Ninja)
6. Shadow the Hedgehog
7. Krystal (Starfox)
8. Zael (The Last Story)
9. Pauline (Super Mario)
10. Bandana Waddle Dee (Kirby)

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Looks At How Certain Wii U Games Might Run On The Nintendo Switch

SKTTR

I don't see Starfox Zero, Project Zero, Nintendo Land, Game & Wario, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, or Xenoblade X being good choices for Switch. They will be likely worse than on Wii U.

They could port games that don't use the second screen, like Super Mario 3D World and Yoshi's Woolly World. I think those are the only good Wii U games they can port without cuts (except the obvious Miiverse comments and Miiverse stamps removal).

Examples:
The Switch versions of New Super Mario Bros. U and Rayman Legends are missing the fun 5-player-mode. They're better on Wii U.
The Switch version of Hyrule Warriors is missing Two-Screen-Multiplayer. Better on Wii U.
The Switch version of Captain Toad is missing Touch+TV-Gameplay. Better on Wii U.
The Switch version of Mario Kart 8 is missing all battle races and Mario Kart TV. Better on Wii U.

Only Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and Bayonetta 1&2 were logical, complete, and therefore good Wii U-to-Switch ports.

Re: IGN Founder Offers Hint At One Of The Rumoured Wii U Ports Coming To Switch

SKTTR

There are only 2 Wii U games I would buy: Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Paper Mario Color Splash. Those were the last games in Wii U's life cycle. Switch released so quickly in 2017 that I never was never able to buy these two Wii U games.
But other Wii U games from 2012-2015? No, thanks. I have them all.

I think Xenoblade X, Starfox Zero, and Project Zero would not work on Switch, and I wouldn't replace my definitive Wii U versions anyway.

My hope is that the 6/10 is Paper Mario.

Re: Pokémon Direct To Air Thursday, 9th January

SKTTR

Nintendo doesn't need to always publish all the games they're involved with. They can be licensed out to DeNA, Niantic or The Pokémon Company.

Cruis'n on Wii is a good example. Nintendo has the rights to the Cruis'n name since the originals on arcade and the N64. Back then Nintendo published the series, but nowadays they give the name and publishing rights away to third parties. If you look close you see Nintendo in the copyright of the credits, but they don't want to be associated with the series too much it seems.

Conker's Bad Fur Day is another good example. Developed by a second party financed by Nintendo. The game even states "Nintendo presents" in the beginning, but Nintendo distanced themselves from it (which was dumb) and let THQ publish it.

Re: Poll: What Other Wii U Games Do You Want To See On Switch?

SKTTR

1. Paper Mario: Color Splash (Haven't played it)
2. Super Mario 3D World (because it's a great game)
3. Yoshi's Woolly World (because it's a great game)

I'd love to have others experience Xenoblade Chronicles X, Star Fox Zero, Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water, and the two Zelda HD remakes but everyone should experience them on Wii U where they are best. They can't possibly be recreated on Switch without several alterations and downgrades. It would be like Capcom's lazy ports. However, the three games I mentioned above are easy Switch ports without a gameplay loss so I vote for those. For the others you should buy a Wii U.

Re: Luigi's Mansion 3 Nominated For New York Best GOTY Award

SKTTR

Luigi's Mansion 3 is one of the best games I played all year.

It finally is a full 30 hour adventure, and not a supershort and easy 5 hour beat-on-first-day game like LM1 or a linear one like LM2.

With Luigi's Mansion 3, the ghostbusting series is on a new level of quality and content. It's finally coming close to other huge Nintendo characters series, and we'll see that reflected in its sales and the praise it will get by the fans now and in the coming years.

And most of us haven't even checked out the multiplayer because we're still strying to 100% complete the main story, and now it's getting a multiplayer DLC pack on top of it.

Re: Feature: The Best Free Switch Games To Download Right Now

SKTTR

Fallout Shelter, Gems of War, and Dawn of the Breakers brought hours of fun free gaming to the Switch.

Fallout Shelter is actually 100% completable for free and it doesn't take an eternity of playtime to max your vault and beat all story missions. It gets repetitive after 100+ hours but until then it's a fun shelter building and survival game.

Gems of War is for people that have completed 100% of Puzzle Quest, Puzzle Kingoms + rest of the series, and want an online version with unlimited content. The base game is as addicting as ever.

Dawn of the Breakers is a nice mix of board game and fast paced street brawler with anime super heroes and a strange story about demon like enemies. Collect fighters with a Gatcha machine and level them up in the story mode, other modes, and events.

Re: Hideki Kamiya Thinks The Switch Home Menu Is A "Piece Of Crap"

SKTTR

The Switch is the worst Nintendo console when it comes to game sorting and accurate playtime options compared to Wii U, 3DS, Wii, and DS.

The Wii and DS did it better, by having you set up your own arrangement of games, and the Wii U and 3DS added folders to that.

It doesn't matter to me how the menu is compared to Xbox or PlayStation, what matters is that it's worse than the last four Nintendo consoles.

Re: Red Dead Redemption 2 Contains A Nintendo Switch Controller Image

SKTTR

@zool A portable GTA V in at least PS3 quality would not be a problem for Switch. Many people nowadays prefer to have games both on the big screen and portable with them at the same time. GTA V is one of the best selling games of the last years, and a Switch version of any GTA would be selling too.
