I never played a bad Ys game. Even the first two are still enjoyable, because the games run fast, the combat is simple, leveling is fun, the puzzles are innovative, locations have atmosphere, characters are interesting, and the music is fantastic.
If you like retro RPGs you can't go wrong with the old Ys games. And if you want a great modern Ys game, Ys 8 is an awesome entry point.
I buy all Nintendo systems at launch. N64 was my first day one console, and the only exceptions were the GBA and the 3DS because I knew I would regret those (since they had no interesting launch titles). I got them later though, but unlike all other Nintendo consoles never played much on them. Can't skip the home consoles, but a handheld console is a hard sell for me.
Shame on you mister ex president withholding EarthBound related main games. Multibillion dollar corporation can't translate one of their best RPGs for sure. Yeah, give us more Pokecrap.
I've beaten it with the fan translation a few years after its release. The DS came out and chances for an official release and translation looked grim. I love EarthBound, so Mother 3 was the first and only game I've ever played with a translation patch.
Every time I play a masterpiece I want an official and physical version of it, so yeah, still waiting for the day it happens so I can replay it.
I'd rather have something without a number but with a subtitle just like the other two games:
1. EarthBound: Beginnings 2. EarthBound: The War Against Giygas 3. EarthBound: Mother
Yep, I just call the third entry Mother because it's the game where the literal mother has the biggest role. Any good subtitle would be cool though... Brothers, Pig Masks, Chimeras, Sunflowers.. there should be enough iconic parts in the game to pick from.
Reminds me of Switch's Kairosoft games. Most of them are pretty addicting, but they lack the final polish that surely Nintendo's version would provide.
Takara made the best Game Boy fighting games. All of them, even those that were rather mediocre on Neo Geo or PlayStation received a fantastic Game Boy version.
If you were a handheld gamer in the mid-90s and picked Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat over Takara's stuff you chose wrong. I had tons of fighting games for the Game Boy back in the day, and I liked Killer Instinct and MK2 too, but Takara was the king. They created Game Boy fighting games that were on the same level as their Neo Geo Pocket counterparts.
Great times playing these in 2 player mode, on a big screen in color on the Super Game Boy. Samurai Shodown was my favourite since you could smash away your opponents weapon and it had great music and art.
I believe nothing bad can come of this creator and I haven't downloaded anything significant this year, so maybe this is the one that makes me add some eShop credit.
From ancient ruins to sci-fi alien survival, I'm excited how this turns out. Could be something worthwhile.
The C64 was the main computer for classics like Project Firestart, Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Turrican 1&2, X-Out, Katakis, Giana Sisters, Paradroid, Gribbly's Day Out, Uridium, Armalyte, WizBall, Impossible Mission 1&2, International Karate, The Last Ninja 1&2&3 and many more.
It also received Nintendo games like Mario Bros., Mario Bros. II, Donkey Kong, DK Jr., and Popeye.
A few years ago it even got an (unofficial) port of Super Mario Bros.
There are still plenty of new games released for the system 40 years later.
I grew up with the C64 and if there's any chance we get Project Firestart and WizBall I'm in.
When pirates get caught by Nintendo they receive a Ganondorf figurine. I'm sure it's fun to stare at it while paying back millions of dollars for the damage done.
Somewhat similar, Activision Blizzard is so freaking bad that Nintendo allowed them to use Ganondorf in Diablo 3.
10/10 Tetrisphere 10/10 The New Tetris 9/10 Pokémon Puzzle League 9/10 Dr. Mario 64 8/10 Wetrix
Dr. Mario 64 was the first Dr. Mario game with 4 players and the first (and only) with a meaty single player story mode. It's easily the best Dr. Mario game ever released.
B-tier? Even Puzzle League, Mario's Picross, and arguably Wario's Woods and Kirby's Ghost Trap are A-tier. B-tier puzzlers made by Nintendo are probably Mario&Yoshi and Yoshi's Cookie. Dr. Mario is way more beloved. There are people playing nothing else but Dr. Mario for 30 years.
Wouldn't Smash Ultimate still make money, if they just released another Fighters Pass, a "Missing Stages" pack, and a "Returning Modes" pack? I know I would pick them up.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DX for the next Switch in 4K, including all content and DLC it has now, plus a bunch of new fighters with stages and music. Who wouldn't jump on that at full price again? I know I would. They reached a point where there is so much content, the game is automatically worth it if they just add necessary content and features every generation.
Creating a sequel starting from scratch can only be as successful if it has all fighters returning once again. Ultimate set the precedent to be an infinite game. Every character has its fans, a legacy, an amiibo, and if even the Wii Fit Trainer or Mii Fighters are missing in the next game, some hundred thousand fans would cry in pain. Locking out certain characters (and putting old fighters as DLC) was one of the reasons Smash 4 wasn't universally loved.
This reminds me to pick up Bubble Bobble, Wonder Boy, and Turrican for Switch.
In interviews of computer magazines from the 80's and 90's, the best coders and game devs from Germany always liked games from Japan the most (followed by the UK). Germany itself was highly regarded as well with studios like Rainbow Arts and Factor 5 and it's sad that nowadays German publishers are mostly known for casual puzzlers, educational shovelware, and rigid simulations.
This is Take-Two Interactive. In the last 5 to 10 years they made clear that they don't want anyone to really own their games. I hear they skimp games on other consoles too, even when there's enough space on the media at no additional cost. It's a bad company that unfortunately has a bunch of good games. The only reason this isn't a Cloud Version or code-in-a-box is because the whole gaming world would backlash against them. Take-Two Interactive (which consists of Rockstar, 2K, and Private Division) cannot wait for the era of Cloud gaming to start properly so that they can get away with their scummy practices more easily.
They found the cheapest way possible right at the knife's edge.
@BlueMonk Hey, roguelike elements (procedural/rng) are what made F-ZERO X (X Cup) and Pikmin 2 (dungeons) so replayable and rich, in times (2004) when roguelike's weren't much of a thing. Obviously those elements were layered underneath a well-designed base game. So preferably it's great to have both in one package.
I'm not into Marvel and even less into cloud gaming but I tried all the demos on Switch multiple times and they all ran well (my internet isn't the best). This one was without a doubt the most fun and graphically intense so far. It's also running on those Ubitus servers like most Switch Cloud games, so I guess the reviewer experienced just a series of bad luck connecting to the servers. It can happen to you and me as well. But on all the days that I have tested Guardians of the Galaxy it ran just as well as Hitman 3, A Plague's Tale, Control, and The Forgotten City. All have the expected small input lag. The only difference to the other Cloud games is that Guardians of the Galaxy looks even better than the rest.
It's better to have cloud versions of those high-end games on Switch than no Switch version at all. So why are Resident Evil 7 - Cloud Version and Assassin's Creed Odyssey - Cloud Version still Japan exclusive?
Here's my rundown of every console.
NES: Maniac Mansion.
SNES: DOOM.
That's when I was little.
For Wii it's Silent Hill: Shattered Memories that still makes my hair stand up. From the first encounter with those ugly humanoid hunters transforming the whole city in some cold icy nightmare to the final story twist I was totally absorbed and amazed (and frightened). What a great horror experience. But Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon and Project Zero 2 - Wii Edition are extremely unsettling as well. I would also add Pandora's Tower and Resident Evil 4 - Wii Edition. They're just too good (and too scary) to ignore. Those are my Wii Top 5 Horror games.
Honorable mentions: Manhunt 2 and Dead Space Extraction.
For Gamecube I also agree with Eternal Darkness. It plays with your senses on a meta level. Nothing compares in the slightest.
Second place: killer7 obviously.
The spookiest horror game on N64? Possibly the zombie graveyard in Conker's Bad Fur Day. Body Harvest and DOOM 64 gave me a constant sense of dread as well. And Resident Evil 2, one of those "impossible" games and a stonecold classic.
On Wii U it's a tie between Maiden of Black Water and ZombiU. Lone Survivor was pretty good and crazy but because of its pixel style not too scary and ultimately somewhat of a very short game. Slender: The Arrival however, I will never do again! Not the best game but definately good horror.
On Switch I have played just a tiny fraction of its many horror games. DOOM would be the closest I think. So I go with Luigi's Mansion 3. Who said horror games must be bloody gorefests?
Oh yeah, Alien Isolation. Haven't played it on Switch but definately worth a mention. There are far too many horror games on Switch for me to have a comprehensive overview. Oxenfree, The Count Lucanor, and Darkwood are some of the creepiest indies I played so far. Check em out if you still need something for Halloween.
There are only two time limited events in Switch games I hate to miss. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Tetris 99. So obviously I'll drop in this weekend to unlock the theme.
Hmmm. The eShop says it is 13GB. And 13GB not fitting on a 16GB cartridge is sad. Well, other games like SMTV are probably better value anyway.
Other than that the physical version is still better than a download. I can take the cart with me to play (and show the game around) on other consoles. That's what I do with many games, like playing Pikmin 3 Deluxe alone at home, but then taking it to a friend for a co-op playthrough. Updates are no problem as they're free. If I had those games digital I couldn't share, borrow, or sell them. They would be locked to my console.
With "Halloween games" such as Murder House, Corpse Party, Murder Diaries 1&2, Henchman Story, etc. being released in Germany recently (and tons of other 18+ rated games readily available), I wonder what content makes Dying Light so much worse than all the other horror games on Switch? I'm intrigued and curious. I thought we had grown out of this banning bull...
Bought all Fighters. (Good deal!) But no Mii costumes. (Bad deal!)
I love the Fighters Passes. I would buy a third and fourth one because that's DLC done right. But I never pay for cosmetics like Mii costumes. Not for that price anyway. I like Miis (even as a fighter) and I sometimes play as Saki Amamiya and Chibi-Robo, because I really want them as fighters. They're great as long as they're free. I wish I had the Goemon and DOOM Slayer costumes, but ehh.... I can skip those unless they put all Mii costumes in a set and sell it for a really low price.
Yes, the Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin spirit is now also available for everyone.
Never played Kingdom Hearts, but I bought both Fighters Passes at launch because we knew it was going to be all new fighters with new stages, music, and spirits. Much better than the Wii U version where you had to buy old fighters (Mewtwo, Roy, Lucas) for a full roster.
Sora is a decent fighter so far. Plays like a very classic one that's in line with Banjo, Terry, Byleth, and Pyra/Mythra. With that I mean he's easier to learn than a gimmicky/weird one like Hero, Min Min, or Steve.
The stage is clean, but I had high hopes for his music. After Kazuya coming with 1 ½ hours of Tekken music, these 14 minutes of Kingdom Hearts music feel somewhat lacking.
The Sega Mega Drive Classics Collection has Phantasy Star 2+3+4 (the first one was a Master System game). It also has Golden Axe 1+2+3, Streets of Rage 1+2+3, Shining Force 1+2+In The Darkness, all Shinobi games, and Vectorman 1+2. So, several complete collections in one game.
The best thing on it though are Landstalker and the Treasure games: Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Light Crusader, and Dynamite Headdy.
Mega Drive NSO fortunately starts with a bunch of games that are not on the "collection". Ecco the Dolphin, MUSHA, Strider, Castlevania: Bloodlines, and Contra: Hard Corps. That's 5 "new" games out of the 14.
So yeah, I would try one of those. My favourite so far is Gunstar Heroes and I wish I had more time to get into the old Phantasy Star's. Those (and Shining Force) are way more substantial than the arcadey lot.
I always wanted a Metroid with a vast openworld planet surface that has entrances to a classic complex underground system. Openworld on the surface and metroidvania down below.
I love Mischief Makers (Treasure's masterpiece and one of the best games ever), but I think we'll just get their Mega Drive games again (the one's we had on Wii VC: Alien Soldier, Dynamite Headdy, and Light Crusader). But I don't complain. Those are damn good games as well and I'm happy for all of you that missed them last time.
But the one N64 game by Treasure I really want is Bakuretsu Muteki Bangai-O. I was only able to play it for a couple hours when back in 2000 I met someone who had lots of Japanese N64 imports. The game felt very special but I spent the rest of the time with Sin and Punishment. Back then it looked amazing! And I had only 2 days to try all his Japanese N64 games. If I had known that I get Sin and Punishment on Wii VC 10 years later I would have invested more time into Bangai-O.
This is really backwards. Everyone wants the six button controller. That was the definitive controller. The first one was obsolete even back then, so why should it be worth 50 bucks now?
@Themagusx1 Hey troll, name just one 3D platformer from 1998 (or earlier) that is on the same level as Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. I feel you struggling and wiggling now.
It would be neat if they updated the PAL games to 60Hz but since they have no time for that, I guess it's more important to have German and French screentext for the European market.
@Steel76 Jaleco made no N64 games, and European developers made great stuff like Star Wars Rogue Squadron and Battle for Naboo, GoldenEye (and 10 other Rareware games), Rayman 2, Body Harvest, Space Station Silicon Valley, Worms Armageddon, and Wetrix to name a few.
The only things missing from Switch are (enhanced and advanced versions of) all the great software and hardware features we had on Wii/Wii U and DS/3DS....
and of course better Joy-Cons.
I've never seen Not A Nugget on a Nintendo system or consoles in general. What's the name of the game he's starring in? Is he in Kitten Squad? I played that for a good while but never encountered him. It seems to me that he's not a videogame character and therefore not eligible for Smash.
And even if PETA is bad (don't know much about them), if you eat animals when supermarkets in our society are filled to them brim with other tasty proteins, you're at least just as bad.
Since the Wii U's launch and Takamaru being included in Nintendo Land, I wait for some news on a new Murasame Castle game.
Did the inclusion of Takamaru in Nintendo Land, Samurai Warriors 3, and his assist trophy in Smash, and the VC release on the 3DS ultimately lead to nothing?
Why was the original not on Wii or Wii U VC? Why is it not on Switch NES Online? Nintendo can be weird sometimes.

Re: Best Of 2021: How Takara Brought SNK's Arcade Fighters To The Humble Game Boy
Takara made the best Game Boy fighting games. All of them, even those that were rather mediocre on Neo Geo or PlayStation received a fantastic Game Boy version.

They created Game Boy fighting games that were on the same level as their Neo Geo Pocket counterparts.

Re: Retro Studios Scrapped An "Open-World" Idea For Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
I always wanted a Metroid with a vast openworld planet surface that has entrances to a classic complex underground system.
Openworld on the surface and metroidvania down below.
Re: Japanese Developer Treasure Teases Future Releases For Switch Online
Re: Feature: What Is The Zelda 'Formula'? We Break Down The Secret Recipe
In short, looking at the base progression mechanics, Zelda was a top-down metroidvania that turned into a 3D-metroidvania.
Or more on point, a metroidvania is just Zelda from a sidescrolling perspective.
Re: Banjo-Kazooie Is 'Coming Home' To A Nintendo Console Via Switch Online
@Themagusx1 You're so easily cornered. Cute!
Well. There you have it folks. If you wanted the best 3D platformers in 1998 there were two options: Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie.
Re: Feature: Our Verdict On Mario Golf: Super Rush's 3.0 Update, Including New Characters And Courses
Ninji is cute, but give Foreman Spike another chance. He was playable once, but that was in the sole Japan-exclusive Mario Golf game unfortunately.
Re: Japan's Switch Online Service Gets The Six-Button Sega Mega Drive Controller
This is really backwards. Everyone wants the six button controller. That was the definitive controller. The first one was obsolete even back then, so why should it be worth 50 bucks now?
Re: Deltarune Chapter 2 Is Available Now On Switch As A Free Update
❤
Playing right now. So glad it released just a few days after the PC version.
Re: Banjo-Kazooie Is 'Coming Home' To A Nintendo Console Via Switch Online
@Themagusx1 Hey troll, name just one 3D platformer from 1998 (or earlier) that is on the same level as Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. I feel you struggling and wiggling now.
Re: Uh-Oh, Nintendo Switch Online's N64 Games Might Be 50Hz In Europe
It would be neat if they updated the PAL games to 60Hz but since they have no time for that, I guess it's more important to have German and French screentext for the European market.
Re: Sin & Punishment For Nintendo 64 Now Has An Official Western Box Art
Haven't seen this box yet, but if it's official I bet it's finally fully localized!
Re: Don't Worry, Nintendo Isn't Abandoning Switch Online's SNES And NES Libraries
Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?
The only things missing from Switch are (enhanced and advanced versions of) all the great software and hardware features we had on Wii/Wii U and DS/3DS....
and of course better Joy-Cons.
Re: Smash Bros. Ultimate's Next Event Celebrates All Things Nature
@Clarice I think (Binding of) Isaac would be much better character-wise, moveset-wise. It's overall a much better game than Meat Boy.
Re: Random: PETA Wants Nintendo To Add A Gun-Toting Chicken To Smash Bros. Ultimate
Re: SUDA51 Would Love To Revive A Lesser-Known Nintendo Classic
Since the Wii U's launch and Takamaru being included in Nintendo Land, I wait for some news on a new Murasame Castle game.
Did the inclusion of Takamaru in Nintendo Land, Samurai Warriors 3, and his assist trophy in Smash, and the VC release on the 3DS ultimately lead to nothing?
Why was the original not on Wii or Wii U VC? Why is it not on Switch NES Online? Nintendo can be weird sometimes.
