Update: January came and went with the announcement of Pokémon Sword and Shield DLC in a dedicated Pokémon Direct and news that Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses was Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Challenger #5. That's all well and good, but we're still waiting for 2020's first proper Nintendo Direct. With that in mind we've updated our expectations from last month with a few extra thoughts about what we expect from 2020's first Nintendo Direct...
We're well into 2020 now and after gorging ourselves on the very best games of 2019 at the end of last year, our appetite for new games is steadily returning. Of course, Nintendo announcements come in video-based packages direct to us (and you), and the whispers have been going around since the ball dropped for 2020. When is the first Nintendo Direct of 2020? That is the question!
Will there be a Nintendo Direct in February 2020?
Well, looking back to last year, Nintendo kept us on tenterhooks throughout January until mid-February when it dropped a real whopper of a Direct before following it up at the end of the month with a Pokémon Direct devoted solely to the reveal of Pokémon Sword and Shield. Looking at past years, Nintendo has generally waited until February to make big announcements (the New Nintendo 3DS reveal and first Switch Direct being notable exceptions).
There's no guarantee that they'll follow suit in 2020, but with Animal Crossing: New Horizons coming in March, we're expecting an announcement of a Nintendo Direct broadcast sooner rather than later.
So, let's take a look at our predictions for the first Nintendo Direct of 2020, whenever it may be...
Nintendo Direct 2020 Predictions
New first-party announcements, obviously
Despite the 'known knowns' like Animal Crossing, and the 'known unknowns' like Metroid Prime 4, Nintendo does like to keep us on our toes with a total surprise. As fun as a huge new IP or new Splatoon would be, a new smaller scale game would be equally welcome. The Stretchers was an unexpected little treat last year, for example, and with this year's first-party release schedule looking a little light, Switch surely has some tasty treats to fill the gaps in the calendar.
Looking back, 2019's schedule looked similarly sparse this time last year, so there's no reason to think Nintendo hasn't got some aces up its sleeve in 2020. Then, of course, there'll be the ports...
A Wii U port or two
As they're wont to do, rumours have sprung up of Wii U ports planned for Switch in 2020, including something that sounds like Pikmin. No need to call in Columbo to come to the conclusion that we'll be seeing more treasures plundered from the good ship Wii U - Nintendo will obviously be looking to plug holes in its release schedule with choice 'Deluxe' ports from its previous console, as it has successfully done since the very beginning with Switch.
We asked you which Wii U titles you'd like to see join their brethren on Switch, and the results were certainly interesting. For our money, Super Mario 3D World and Xenoblade Chronicles X would be very welcome, although we wouldn't turn our noses up at the Zeldas, either. With The Wonderful 101: Remastered definitely Switch-bound following its hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, the more Wii U ports the merrier if you ask us.
Except, perhaps, Devil's Third. That can stay right where it is.
... and some choice third-party ports
After the total home run that is Witcher 3 on Switch, there are plenty of commentators with egg on their faces as they chew on mouthfuls of their own headgear. When it comes to third-party ports on Nintendo's console, it would seem that anything is possible given the appropriate resources, time and talent. Games that we thought could never scale to Switch's mobile chipset suddenly look plausible and only a fool would categorically state that 'Game X will never come to Switch'.
Rather than pin our hopes on Red Dead 2 or Cyberpunk 2077, though, it might be more fruitful to look to the past. In addition to brand new big hitters like DOOM Eternal, studios like Feral Interactive are bringing excellent ports like Alien: Isolation and GRID Autosport to Switch. These great games might have been around for a few years, but they still show what can be done on the handheld with some know-how and elbow grease. We'd jump at the chance to revisit classics from the Wii U era that skipped Nintendo platforms, provided they got a similar level of care and attention on Switch.
Bayonetta 3 news
While The Wonderful 101 may be grabbing all PlatinumGames' headlines at the moment, it's been a while since we've heard from the developer's Umbra Witch and finding out more about her third game is one of the things we're most looking forward to in 2020. E3 2019 feels like the most natural fit for the showboater to reveal more about Bayonetta 3, but we'd expect to see a trailer in any upcoming Nintendo Direct presentation.
The development studio has spoken of 'big things' ahead in 2020, and we're ready to be wowed. We played (and loved) Astral Chain, but there's always room in our book for Bayonetta's brand of swagger and we're eager to catch up with her soon. There are still three more stars to discover on Platinum's teaser site.
A new Sonic game
The blue hedgehog has been quiet for a suspiciously long time in the realm of video games, although we've seen plenty of news concerning his upcoming silver screen debut. We're just days away from Sonic's Valentine's Day movie debut, so we doubt that there'll be a specific movie tie-in game (unless its a mobile title). It seems impossible that Sega would let 2020 pass without Mobius' favourite son popping up on Switch and other consoles, though. After all, we were promised a new game in 2020 at the very start of April last year...
A deluge of Animal Crossing: New Horizons details
Animal Crossing: New Horizons was delayed last year and unfortunately slipped into 2020, although in hindsight this was probably a good thing, and not just so that the developers had the time to finish the game without grinding themselves into the ground. 2019 was so jam-packed with new games that we struggled to play many of them. If the all-consuming Animal Crossing had been thrown in there too, we'd have likely missed out on a whole lot more besides.
We already know quite a bit about Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and we're trying our hardest to stop ourselves buying the adorable Animal Crossing-themed Switch being released alongside the game, but there's going to be plenty more to come over the next couple of months before its 20th March release date. We wouldn't be surprised if New Horizons gets its own dedicated mini Direct, either. The first-party schedule might look a little barren at the moment, but if Nintendo wants to keep April and May free of juicy new releases, we're absolutely fine with that. It would at least give us some space for our island getaway trip and time to catch up with our BFFs. Bring it on.
The return of a dormant franchise
Last year we looked at dormant franchises we'd like Nintendo to bring back, and now that we've seen a Switch entry in most of Nintendo's big name series, it's the perfect time to bring back the 'B-tier'. Longtime readers will be aware of various Nintendo Life staff members' F-Zero fanaticism, but there are plenty of other games which would really fire up hardcore fans and also appeal to the broader audience Switch now enjoys. We can't help imagining how incredible a new Wave Race could look on Switch. How about something smaller like Pushmo? Where's the long-rumoured Pikmin 4? Or Picross, perhaps?
That last one's a joke; Picross is the least dormant series on the planet. There hasn't been one for at least a month, though, so expect another imminently.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Challenger #6 news
The fifth and final DLC fighter (for the first Challenger Pack) was revealed to be Byleth and the Fire Emblem: Three Houses protagonist dropped on Switch on 28th January. The character got a rather mixed, muted reception - arguably due to the fact that Smash Bros. already has a sizeable roster of characters from Nintendo's SRPG series. In fact, the most exciting news for the majority of fans was the announcement of a further six DLC fighters to come over the next two years.
To be honest, it's probably a bit too soon, but for Smash fans who were underwhelmed by Challenger #5, a fresh reveal could once more fan the flames of fandom. With six more slots, there's still hope yet for Waluigi enthusiasts, and Rayman, Sora and Waluigi currently top our poll for the fighters you'd most like to see in Smash. Personally, we think Waluigi would make the perfect final DLC fighter before Sakurai drops the mic and retires.
That is until Nintendo locks him in an iron lung and puts him to work on Super Duper Smash Bros. Ultimater. Poor guy.
Metroid... something
With Retro Studios knee-deep in development on Metroid Prime 4, obviously we'd love to see a little gameplay tease or something more than a temporary logo. On the other hand, any material produced for a Direct would take likely somebody away from developing the game itself, and by all accounts there's still a long way to go, so probably best not to disturb the team while it's got its nose to the grindstone.
If Nintendo wanted to throw Metroid fans a bone, though, there's an easy win just sitting there in the form of Metroid Prime Trilogy HD. We want it, you want it, everybody wants it. Chop chop, Nintendo.
So, that’s what we’re expecting, although when it comes to Nintendo it's usually best to expect the unexpected. Mother 4? Virtual Boy Classic Mini? A Labo tea set with fully functional teapot and biscuit dispenser? Let us know below when you expect to see the first Nintendo Direct of 2020 and exactly what you'd like it to contain below...

Y'all trying to give me heart attack? I legit thought this was a direct announcement.
And SMT V. Can't forget SMT V!
I'm actually happy I haven't had the 5th Smash Bros. DLC character spoiled for me. Looking forward to being surprised.
5 gold stars for mentioning Waverace, Pikmin, F-Zero and Metroid all in the same article. You have made my evening. If you had said 1080 as well I may have had a seizure!
I would like a port of Control...
An I really really enjoyed The Devil's Third...
I came in here to critique but...
Chibi-Robo, Pikmin, Elite Beat Agents 'and' Xenoblade Chronicles X mentioned in a single post.
Well now, that deserves a round-of-applause.
I know it's a wild guess but i think they will announce games there
Holding my breath for Kid Icarus... passes out
All of these prediction posts and videos forget about Detective Pikachu for Switch. I think that will be 2020’s Pokémon game.
So did we finally give up on a new Mother/Earthbound and Ice Climber video games?
New announcement..? Oh no.. a talking point.
A Kingdom Hearts port is all I ever wanted. Now that Square announced they're porting the story so far to xbox if it isn't announced for Switch at the next big direct I don't think it ever will be. Especially won't happen if Sora isn't the 5th dlc fighter.
I only want pikmin 4.
That's all. Pikmin 4.
Honestly Metroid Prime Trilogy HD will be top of my list until it (potentially) appears. Nothing else comes close.
To be honest I'd be happy with a bunch of first-party ports above new stuff. The switch is just the way I want to play them. So give us the Mario Galaxy Games in HD, a fixed Star-Fox Zero, Mario 3D World, Kid Icarus etc...
In terms of returning IPs I really want a Mario Golf, a new Pilotwings and a 3D Donkey Kong Country.
Good predictions, but I would also like to see something from Rockstar even if it is older. Would love Fallout 3 and NV. Lastly some actual EA support like Dragon Age and Mass Effect. And in a rather unlikely release, I want NHL on a handheld. PSP was the last time it was released on a handheld
Pikmin, Wario, Kirby. That’s what I’d get excited about seeing, nothing else.
Shin Megami Tensei V footage.
Ya'll gotta change that image...I thought this was announcement at first.
New Mario game would be my guess, little guy had a quite 2019 playing second fiddle to Luigi or sharing the spotlight with sonic.
Pikmin 4 would be enough to make me happy.
Or a port of F-Zero GX, with online added.
Two things that are not going to happen but are top of my list:
Kid Icarus and Kirby please
Nintendo and Bandai Namco needs to team up to make Mario Baseball again.
Pikmin, Kirby and Super Mario Odyssey 2 would be neat.
need more details on Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and the 5th DLC for Smash Bros Ultimate.
Dang, I saw the thumbnail and got hyped
Did y'all just straight-up miss the tweet from Atlus' jp account on New Year's saying "Please look forward to more news about SMTV!"?
So many classic games from the PS3 era that could be ported over, I'd give my firstborn for a port of Split/Second Velocity.
I would love to see 1080 Snowboarding and WaveRace make a comeback more than anything.
Pls I just want to see more of Xenoblade. And I hope this time the rumor comes true that a Metroid prime trilogy is in the works. But I doubt it lol.
Your article just lists expected games, that we all know about, and I guess a clip, short video or photo will be given to us, with a date like Q4 release for say Metroid. Then come Sept it will be pushed back till April 2021. Like happened to Animal crossing.
🙃
"Permission the leave the station, Phil?"
"For what purpose, Master Chief?"
"To give Nintendo a megaton."
"...permission granted."
I’m gonna sound like a broken record
PIKMIN 4
Calling it now: Splatoon 3 or DKC.
Probably animal crossing new horizons, smash ultimate dlc 5, smash ultimate fighter pass 2 reveal (echo fighters maybe?), another Wii U port to fill out the pre-e3 (Metroid prime trilogy, wonderful 101, pikman 4, or 3-d land if a sequel is not revealed), and a platinum games announcement (maybe Bayonetta, but could be another project). I also think we will get a bunch of sprinkled stuff from other developers. I hope that there is one other first party game revealed too (or retro studios unreleased project or BOTW 2 release date but that could be an e3 thing).
3D World 2... Wave Race
@beazlen1 been waiting on pikmin forever. I love a little news on the 4th installment.
SMT5 is what I want. All this waiting for any sort of info is giving me TMS flashbacks, please don't pull something like that again Atlus.
Pikmin 4, i want that more than anything else at this point (probably because Metroid Prime 4 has already been announced) but Paper Mario is due a new game too and after enjoying Colour Splash more than i was expecting to, i'm really curious to see if they bring the series back to its roots or continue to experiment with it.
If i'm really clutching at straws, Battalion Wars 3 would be ace, but is extremely unlikely, sadly
Switch Wars
Bayonetta 3 trailer.
Then a Smash trailer. Starting with Bayonetta but ending her fighting Dante.
Capcom have a new Monster Hunter Game for the Switch.
Red Dead 2
Microsoft announce Halo (haha ok I'm going bonkers now)
Heck, I would be happy if they just showed 30 minutes of Goldie walking around New Horizon ^^
As for more reasonable predictions:
Let me buy GBA games. Why can't I play Golden Sun yet?
I expect Donkey Kong and Diddy! New games with Kongs
Predictions.
BOTW 2 Update.
Either bayonetta or metroid update.
Wii U port: wonderful 101
New 3rd party: Diablo 4 or Overwatch 2
Animal crossing news.
The latest best indie game.
Smash: because smash
Suprise package: new icarus game.
2nd suprise: new Platinum IP.
Switch Pro BoTW 2 edition
@tabris95 I totally forgot about that game. I legit bought the switch mostly because of the trailer showing SMT V and BOTW
@Alpha-2002 some of the best couch co op right there.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Pikmin 3 Deluxe along with a small update on Pikmin 4. Ideally I'd love to see some N64 games appearing, perhaps not through the APP structure of NES and SNES games and perhaps not even exclusive for NSO members, but enhanced versions (similar to Sega Ages releases) with small tweaks (perhaps control tweaks for modern controllers, or widescreen support for those that didn't originally support it) or even english language support for the Famicom exclusive NSO games like Famicom Wars or the original Fire Emblem! Really I just want some retro stuff every bit as much as I want new stuff. I'm selfish like that!
Right now the only thing I want announced is a second Castlevania collection with the GBA and DS games, haha.
All I want is a new Mario Golf game, and a good 5th Smash DLC character reveal (I really want Master Chief or Crash, but I'm not holding my breath). Also, a GOOD Paper Mario game would be nice, but I think anything else seems more likely than that by this point.
Who else was beaten to the punch by @GutayS5's comment?
At least give us some new zelda 2 footage.
I think that xenoblade X is impossible. We're waiting chronicles 1 for this year
Hasbro has given Nintendo the chance to make an all new Power Rangers game for the Nintendo Switch. This game is what Intelligent Systems has been working on, and features the staple turn-based RPG combat of the Fire Emblem series, telling a new story with a completely new team of Rangers. In return, Battle for the Grid gets an exclusive DLC pack that brings Mario, Link, and Fox into the game. Both get announced in the Direct together.
@Quantaur
I'm dreading any character with any sort of redundancy to his or her name. Sure, I'm team Sora, but all I really want is a character that makes the Fighters Pass 1 go out with a bang. Which might not be the case given there are more coming.
@DLevene17 Travis from no more heroes is pretty much a sure thing I am betting now, especially with that sound effect at the end of the anime trailer they showed that is a sound directly from the smash series.
@brunojenso
Pilot Wings and Mario Golf would be wonderful additions indeed !
Also known unknowns include Pikmin 4 and others which one of the users here already listed.
More Mario maker 2 updates please.
@GregamanX oh yeah, I forgot about Mario Golf. Camelot have got to be working on it, since I think they’ve finished adding stuff to Mario Tennis.
I reckon we’re due another Kirby game. Hal are pretty regular at pumping those out.
Also, tradition states that Nintendo announces a Direct within 48 hours or NintendoLife posting a Talking Point about the inevitable next Direct. So we should all know everything by the end of the week, yeah?
@GutayS5 yeah me too I saw the words “Direct” and literally had a stroke.
@Pirlo_ze_sniper And SP. And online. And music... My God, the music!
@gaga64
Announcing tomorrow / airing thursday night sounds good.
I only want ports with sequels.
NO stand alone ports, anymore.
It devalues my wiiU even more.
quick predictions
1: New Mario Golf announced
2: 5th Smash character is Phoenix Wright
3: Pikmin 3 port
4: New 2D Kirby game
5: Bayonetta 3 FINALLY shown for 2020
6: Xenoblade Chronicles set for late Spring 2020
7: No More Heroes 3 set for Fall 2020
8: Braverly Default 2 set for Summer 2020
9: Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2 Collection
10: No Breath of the Wild sequel shown
I know it's not happening but I would love a new kyle hyde game.
@Expa0 I think once Persona 5 Scramble and Royal is out for the West Atlus will finally show off Shin Megami Tensei 5
@Alpha-2002 Yes please! I'd be over the moon if Halo arrived on the Switch, and almost more so if Master Chief made it into Smash...
I'm waiting for :
1. FF IX switch get physical release
2. Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town (Switch) English version
3. Re:Legend by Magnus Games, published by 505 Games get console release on Switch, PS4 & Xbox One
4. The Sims 4
5. Mii games
6. ARMS 2
7. More Girlie games by Nippon Columbia
8. Fashion games like Style Savvy
9. Cooking Mama Cook Star
10. Dance Dance Revolution
where is Monster Hunter ( a real version, not a 3ds upscale), for the Switch?!
I can't believe no one is reporting or asking for this?
With Witcher 3, Doom, Assassins Creed, Alien Isolation, and other "impossible" games having been successfully made and played for the Switch, I fully expect a version of Monster Hunter World or something similar at this point.
"Looking back, 2019's schedule looked similarly sparse this time last year, so there's no reason to think Nintendo hasn't got some aces up its sleeve in 2020."
I wish I shared this positivity on 2019. For me, it was the year when I finally conceded that BotW was a freak single event and not the start of something amazing for Nintendo and their other franchises.
So many games released over these first few years of Switch, but so much of it is average. BotW was both a blessing and a curse - no wonder they signed off on a sequel.
I'm mainly hoping for Zelda HD ports from the Wii U.
Anything Zelda or 3D Mario would be good really.
I'm also very intriuged to learn more about a Switch Pro if it exists.
@JayJ O God yes! 1080 Snowboarding! That would be a pleasant surprise indeed...
@MrDisappointed We could even have his buddies as costumes! Look, I made a list:
1. Chief
2. Noble 6
3. Jun
4. Emile
5. Kat
6. Jorge
7. Locke
8. Buck
Arby could be the 2nd rep, with Covenant weapons added to the items list. Stage is Blood Gulch and the FS is a 'Hog, Scorpion, or the activation of Halo itself. Cortana could perform "analyses" of all playable characters, filling the Codec and Palutena's Guidance roles from Brawl and 4... I've thought waaaaay too much about this, haven't I? 🤣
Mario 3d world, Metroid Prime Trilogy HD, Star Fox Zero, 1080, F-Zero, Zelda tlp hd, ww hd, no more heroes 3, finaly a Ocarina of Time Remake .... God so many games i want..... Love my Switch....
Let us ruin this Direct with speculation that will leave you dissapointed.
@evanc Atlus normally shows information of their games on their platforms (YouTube) rarely you see it first from PlayStation or Nintendo platforms
All I want is some Mario Party DLC.
Expectations none.
Wants: dates for Zelda BOTW2, Bayonetta 3, AVGN 1+2, Streets of Rage 4, and 198X.
New 3D Mario. New F-Zero. Midway Arcade Classics. Rogue Squadron Trilogy, Dragon Age Trilogy, Fallout modern Trilogy. Soul Calibur Collection.
Again, I doubt any of this, but I can dream.
Something Monster Hunter related...I don't really want World on Switch anymore. But....SOMETHING, even an HD port of Stories, or 4U. Or, and I'm dreaming here, a remake of 4U. lol
The older I get, the more I just want Zelda stuff, and don't find time for much else (except Metroid...and dragon quest). It's too early for BotW2 but I'd love to see OOT hd ported from 3ds and TPHD. I don't see either one happening though. Oh and if they gave us a skyward sword hd I'd insta-buy.
Metroid Prime Trilogy HD please Nintendo. Literally, everyone is asking for it
The only two things I really want without shooting my expectations too high is more Animal Crossing news and a new Mario Golf. Mario Golf is low-key one of my favorite game franchises.
Aside from those, anything else is pretty much just a bonus. The only Wii U ports left that interest me would be Pikmin 3, since I was a fool and skipped it on the Wii U, and Wind Waker HD, simply because it’s one of my favorite games of all-time and I’d rebuy it on almost any system.
If anything Metroid is announced I’ll explode.
Ports? I'd be amazed if the FFXIII trilogy didn't end up on the console at some.pojnt, and maybe even a port of FFXIV?
PSO2 is due out on the Xbox One this year but it isn't an exclusive; expect that Switch-bound.
We seem to have annual Pokémon releases so some sort of Gold/Silver-based sequel to Let's Go! seems likely.
Might we finally see some HD remasters of GameCube games? Who wouldn't want Mario Sunshine HD?!
If we're bringing back an old franchise that might have some crossover appeal a new 1080 would be most welcome or EA to release the PS3/360 SSX game. Or even a crossover between the 2 so I can reenact my Ricky Winterborn Vs Mac Fraser fantasies.
Metroid Prime 4 can't be released this side of 2021 but BotW 2 might make it for Christmas.
Yoshi woolly world!! Now!
I’d like a new Mario golf.
Super Mario Bros. 2 style for Super Mario Maker 2 would be nice. Obviously they'll announce Challenger 5. More information about Animal Crossing, and probably at least a hint at an E ticket (non-port) game for release later in 2020 (they need something big to at least stand a chance against Microsoft and Sony). Metroid and Zelda are the obvious candidates.
If we got Animal Crossing New Horizons, Xenoblade Definitive edition and Xenoblade X on Switch in the same year, I am good for the ENTIRE year pretty much. Certainly with my monstrous backlog.
That said, that wont stop me buying more games while I can afford it.
Just give me zelda, metroid, and some Wii u ports. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
After noticing posters for Punch Out! and Mario soccer in Luigi's Mansion 3 I'm certain one of those games is on the horizon. Heard it here first!
There was another poster I think, but I don't remember being able to recognise it as anything at the time.
I really want Metroid Prime Trilogy HD, I just worry it won’t have a motion control option, which might leave the Wii version as the preferred way to play for me. Those controls were so great.
I'm praying for another Chibi-Robo or Steel Diver game.
Both series deserve more attention than what they get.
@tabris95 A man of culture I see
I dont see why Rockstar wont release Grand Theft Auto V. Its a PS3 port and will sell good. I predict it will be a slow year with only Animal Crossing as major release with some ports.
Dormant series....
Gamecube highlights F-ZERO GX, Chibi-Robo!!, Eternal Darkness, Geist
GBA highlights Advance Wars, Golden Sun
Wii highlights The Last Story, Fortune Street, Excite Truck and Endless Ocean, Rhythm Fever Paradise
Any chance of a Direct this Wednesday?
I want Devil's third on switch!
@Alpha-2002 Cool ideas! There's definitely a lot of potential for Halo in Smash. Here's hoping Master Chief makes the cut...
Wouldn't be surprised at all of an announcement tomorrow for a Direct or Direct Mini for Animal Crossing Wednesday! I'm not saying it's absolutely going to happen, I just wouldn't be surprised.
Kirby 3D game. If it's an "experimental" Kirby, I'll skip it but if it's a new Kirby I'll play it.
Are you sure that Sonic teaser wasnt just an April Fools joke? It looks like one.
It says April 2nd, but with time zones and what not, it could very well have been posted April 1st/
I’m hoping for a release date of the console version of Kentucky Route Zero. Looks right up my alley, but was holding out for all the chapters to be completed before I dived in.
Unless I missed it in the later comments, I'd really love to see Dark Souls 2 and 3 ported to Switch. I'm honestly surprised they haven't already been ported.
Honestly I'd be pretty happy if Monster Hunter Stories got a port to switch, or Strange Journey.
Very misleading title. I guess when there is no news regarding Nintendo, some kind of buzz has to be made but this was disappointing.
Something tells me that the Sonic game isn't ever going to happen because it was announced on April 1st as an April Fools joke. That's what I think. Also I hope Twilight Princess HD comes to switch and can have the ability to play like the Wii version.
Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mario 3D World port and a couple of triple AAA ports (Cyberpunk, Control, Red Dead Redemption, GTA 5 or GTA trilogy) would be a great Nintendo Direct IMO.
hmm new 3ds console you say, welp l'm looking forward to see it.
I am waiting to see some amazing ports. The 1st party goodness is inevitable so I do not think about that. 2019 was a good year for ports. I hope 2020 is even better.
I think 2020 should be a pretty good year for Switch, though I highly doubt a January/February Direct will be be unveil the entire year's worth of content.
> I'm almost 100% confident that Super Mario 3D World is being ported to Switch this year. It was a 93 Metacritic critical darling that is perfectly-suited for local co-op play. It could easily be a 10+ million seller on Switch.
> I'm 75% confident that Pikmin 3 being ported to Switch this year. The game won't sell big numbers, but it does deserve a bigger audience on Switch. Pikmin 1 and 2 were both ported to Wii via the New Play line, so there is precedence.
> I'm 50% confident that Breath of the Wild 2 will be released this year. Nintendo has been pushing for a holiday 2020 release since early 2019, but 3D Zelda games have a tendency of getting delayed to improve quality and introduce new gameplay elements.
> I'm 50% confident that a Pokemon RPG - i.e. Ultra Sword/Shield or Diamond/Pearl remake - will be released this year. (However, even if it was, it would be announced during a dedicated Pokemon Direct, not during a January/February general Direct)
> I'm 25% confident that whether Prime Trilogy HD will be released this year. It's been rumored for nearly 2 years, but the reboot of Prime 4 has thrown everything Metroid-related into somewhat of a whirlwind.
> I 100% do not expect long-dormant super-niche franchises like F-Zero or Golden Sun to suddenly get revived ever, and certainly not this year.
@westman98 I'm 100% confident that there will be a Pokémon RPG this year. Pokémon RPGs have been on a yearly release schedule for a while now.
It's either
Breath of the Wild 2 will be released this holiday, I'm certain of that. It uses the BotW world and engine, so that takes away a lot of development.
Metroid Prime 4 I think will be 10% for this year. Bayonetta 3 might be this year as well.
F-Zero, Golden Sun or Pikmin 4 won't be released on the Switch.
MP Trilogy would make me very happy!
Also a new Pushmo would be sweet. Totally forgot about that game!
Honestly, mate, are you trying to kill us here? I legit squealed like the Nintendo fangirl I am the moment I saw the Direct logo on my feed, only to have my hopes dashed 0.86 seconds later when I read the title. 😭
@GrailUK Although I'd love Switch Wars, unless they're going to give it to a different studio, I can't see Intelligent Systems abandoning Fire Emblem. Plus we have Tiny Metal and Wargroove which have been well received, is there room for another Wars game so soon? I'd say they need to change things up quite radically but then again I didn't enjoy Battalion Wars one bit.
Nier Automata port please. Another Xbox title would be nice aswell.
I can't believe it's been 17 years since F-Zero GX. Considering the extremely low budget and short development time of GX, you'd think then that either Nintendo would give the franchise to someone like Shin'en who already have a fantastic framework to work from with FAST RMX. Just think about what they could achieve with a slightly bigger budget, perhaps a couple of extra developers on board and a decent marketing campaign.
Literally just Modify FAST RMX to include F-Zero ships and characters, make a couple dozen new tracks, a few extra modes and voila. They already have the game made, they only need to to tweak the handling, all of the frame rate, the resolution, the graphics, everything is already there. It would be basically like making DLC and releasing it as a standalone version.
Pikmin 4 and a return of F-Zero please. Even an F-Zero GX Deluxe would be enough. Word on more NES or SNES games. There's not much else I want.
But I think you might be onto something there with Labo Tea Party. I'll bring the scones!
1080 Avalanche and AC:NH, but also the Prime trilogy and all the Pikmin titles
I will scream of joy if they announce a Golden Sun remake. A ocarina of time remake will have the same effect. Besides those I hope Nintendo will start to use all the franchises they have. There is so much untapped potential. F-zero, 1080, excite bike, waverace, advance wars, eternal darkness, good star fox, just to name a few lost franchises out there.
Would love a Pushmo rerelease on switch, that was a really underrated puzzle game with absolutely amazing songs.
Picross, I think we already have plenty on the Switch.
Xenoblade Chronicles X, could be a pain to adapt to the switch because of it was using the two screens of the Wii U, but would be a blast to have it remastered on the Switch.
A Pikmin trilogy and anouncement of Pikmon 4 would be nice
Golden Sun HD Remaster Trilogy, direct buy!
Also, Baten Kaitos, another underrated game that would benefit to be re-render in HD, that game was just absolutely gorgeous on the GameCube and would really benefit to have an HD release. (and the musics!!!!)
Edit: a re-release of the GBA/DS Advance wars, yeah I buy them too!
Seeing an image of Control I’m the port section of the article makes me want one, but considering it still can’t run properly on the launch PS4, I’m more doubtful of seeing it on Switch than The Witcher 3.
What I’d like to see in the port department...
Skies of Arcadia
SM3DW
Zelda WW & TP
MP Trilogy & Samus Returns
Castlevania GBA ports
Castlevania LoS Trilogy remastered
What I’d like to be surprised with...
A new true Paper Mario
A new Mario & Luigi RPG
A new Golden Sun (please get rid of the horrid 3D and return to the 2D sprites!)
A new Mario Golf
There was something else and I’ve forgotten, I’ll update when I remember.
At the risk of repeating myself: New Tracks for MK8 dx.
Just start to put every Zelda games first with hd remaster and stuffs. A new F zero and Prime trilogy remaster would be not too much to ask too.
And it's a pokemon direct! Disappointment galore! I sure hope they plan a regular direct with more of what this article mentions sooner than later. There's a big question mark on what's coming this year at this point from nintendo themselves.
I predict:
Direct due to land1st week of Feb. Mostly casual games and the EASTER release title.
me and the lab boys are really expecting chief for smash.
#cheifforsmash
If the 5th Smash character is a Pokemon I would probably guess Rillaboom because there are no stand alone Grass Starter pokemon. Should've been Decidueye
If it's not a Pokemon I would say Doomguy would be my frontrunner. DOOM was a huge part of video game history and Nintendo seems to have a very positive relationship with the current DOOM team.
@Lord yeah February is now looking more likely for the REAL Direct
F-Zero SsswitchhH
and
NHL 2020
SHIN. MEGAMI. TENSEI. FIVE.
Pokemon Direct is kind of fascinating, though.
My wishlist for a Direct is actual insight into the Metroid Prime 4 development and/or any other Metroid game announcement with a 2020 release date. Remake/remaster/original/2D/3D I'll take anything — yes, even an Other M remaster or a Federation Force remake (without chibi-bobble-heads, though, please!).
Federation Force would be a very bad publicity move, I have to admit, a multiplayer game like that updated for the Switch — well, the original was pretty good, overall, when you subtract a couple aspects.
Personally I hope for a 2D gameplay NEW Metroid game. 2nd on the list is a Prime Trilogy collection heavily remastered and with motion aiming options. 3rd is a Samus-Returns-style remake of Fusion or even Zero Mission. 4th is a remake of Super Metroid (it's 4th because the original just wouldn't benefit much and could be screwed up).
Somewhere on that list is Metroid Blast, even.
If we're talking about the first general Direct of 2020, then I would really love to see Bayonetta 3, and some early third-party surprises (save the best for the rest of the year!).
Now thinking about it, we may get a general Direct later this month if we follow a similar logic to the directs of January 2013. But If I want it to be an "excellent" direct, then I would rather have it for next month.
Red dead redemption 2 would be awesome and I'm hopeful for another Zelda port if not botw 2. And metroid the other m remade for the switch as well as the trilogy and am holding out hope for the Batman games
....People keep forgetting that Sakurai already confirmed that more fighters are coming after the 5th fighters pass character. It's not going to end this year, lol
@Arkin1988 Glad I'm not the only one that wants Stories in some form...HD port, expansion, sequel...I don't care, just give me something! xD
@Joeynator3000 The mobile port is actually pretty decent, but I prefer using physical controls over touch any day.
@Arkin1988 Yeah I tried the demo and THOUGHT about buying it, but I'll just stick with the 3DS version. (especially now that I fixed the circle pad issue)
@mariomaster96 Nintendo Switch Has Games
Man, I'd love to see a new, I'd even take a port, of Super Mario Strikers
@Pirlo_ze_sniper somehow you maybe right. Will monitor this your predictions closely.
I’m normally pretty good at waiting for directs, but this ones starting to get to me...
There will be Sonic announcements every 20th of the 2020 and the first Nintendo Direct is February 20th... No way... Is Sonic FINALLY getting his sidekick in Smash?
Last year the direct was on february 13th so maybe it be the same this year.
Golden Sun. Please. Before I die of old age.
