Rumour: Nintendo Wanted Sora In Smash Bros. Ultimate, But Got Rejected By Disney

Kingdom Heartbreak.

If we end up with a Disney rep, it will most likely be Tsum Tsum Mario.

I really have a sneaking suspicion that friction exists between Disney and Nintendo. I keep wondering if Nintendo went with Universal Studios over Disneyland for a reason.

I don’t want Disney characters in smash

I mean, Sora could be in smash without Donald or Goofy. There are countless KH original characters for spirits and such with absolutely stunning music.

That being said Im half happy because I dont like KH (yes I accept the dislikes I understand), but it would be neat in terms of the fun moveset he would bring. Not a character I want, but I DO want his moveset and soundtrack

Understandable...since Nintendo went with Universal studios for their theme park, this makes Nintendo more of a competitor to Disney.

I don't think Disney would want Sora to be in the same game as a witch who shows skin when using her smash attacks, or a high school student whos final smash reference blood coming out of other fighters. (I know Jokers FS is censored to make look more like stars, but still.)

@PBandSmelly The issue is less that Disney owns things that are in Kingdom Hearts and more that everything that wasn't already Square Enix IP is owned by both Disney and Square Enix. So Sora is just as much DIsney IP as he is Square Enix.
I agree though, I do not like Kingdom Hearts and I'd much rather other characters.

Sora, Fire Emblem characters, what's the difference? Just replaceable characters a small few remember the names of after they play the game. They always felt interchangeable and samey to me in all the FE games. I love playing Fire Emblem but I never cared about the characters dying because I feel no attachment to any of them. I just hated to lose an archer I'd been building up really.

I enjoy the Kingdom Hearts series of games but sorry I'm not a fan of Sora or any KH characters. If anything just give us Geno as one of the season two DLC, if not Square Enix already got two reps as it is we really don't need another.

Nothing of value is lost. Keep Kingdom Hearts as far away as possible. Terrible franchise.

I dunno I mean no non-game characters are allowed which means Sora's core cast members wouldn't be with him which would butcher the representation of the game which in turn would make it not worth the effort because KH fans would be unhappy at the poor attempt at bringing the franchise to Smash. Sure you could say the same for Cloud having two songs and no spirits but difference is that Cloud, his costume, hairstyle, and iconic buster sword are iconic enough to stand on their own. Not so sure about that key kid on the other hand.

Put in Xehanort instead. There could be one costume slot for each and every one of his alternate incarnations.

I don't think Disney cares, Nintendo financed and published MUA 3 as a Switch exclusive.

And Capcom has published several Disney games this generation, but has partnered with Universal Japan on Monster Hunter The Real and Biohazard 2 The Real. Disney and Capcom both seem to be on good relations despite that.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that Nintendo also promoted Disney Tsum Tsum Festival and Alien Isolation in Nintendo Diresvts. And promoted Star Wars Pinball on their main YouTube channel.

Lesson learned, next time go straight to Disney US.

I'd rather get Wreck-it Ralph or Fix-it Felix Jr. Jump the shark entirely and go for a Disney videogame character.

While I’ll take this with a grain of salt... it sounds plausible. Disney has been responsible for a lot of bad choices with the series in recent years (though Nomura hasn’t helped either), and they are very controlling with their IPs. If anyone would turn Nintendo down, it would be Disney. It’s a wonder we still even get KH games.

I’m definitely saddened by this possibility though. Sora and Geno were the last two characters I really care about remotely being added to Smash, and both are unlikely at this point. Anyone else I’d want in the game is already there. Ah well, probably about time to let that wish go.

@GrailUK assuming this is true, I have some good guesses as to why they would turn Nintendo down. For one, they have control issues and a cameo puts Nintendo in control of their IPs. The series has suffered in recent years due to their constrictions. Two, Nintendo is partnering for their theme park with Universal Studio - the audacity of them (at least in Disney’s eyes). Three, similarly Nintendo isn’t using Disney for their upcoming Mario film. Four, to Disney all other media companies are competitors. Five, remember when Nintendo refused to let Mario into the Wreck-It-Ralph films? I’m sure Disney remembers.

Disney hasn’t seemed on friendly terms with Nintendo in recent years and they’ve gotten quite greedy with their properties. Heck, it could be as simple as them wanting a huge compensation for the rights and Nintendo being unwilling to shell out that much for one character. I always felt if there was anything keeping Sora out of the game, it would be Disney.

now ignoring everybody's hate sora isn't that bad it would just be an alternate style of elemental attacks that robin uses. so ya fire emblem character but even so atleast in name its not fire emblem character. though I would prefer a heartless instead since they seem to basically be in every game.

That's disappointing. Sora is always in these lists of most wanted characters. He'd be in mine, because he's iconic and it would have been cool to see Donald and Goofy in a final smash. Plus Traverse Town as a level would be great. Ultimate has a pretty amazing roster. I'd like to see, any of the below make it in.

You're crazy if you don't think KH is a huge enough series to deserve a character even if you don't like it. That series has left a huge impact on gaming with most children that had a PS2. But I'd rather not have Disney involved in Smash in any way even it means we have to pass on a character I like.

Nintendo started making live action movies out of there IPs (Pokémon detective pikachu, Mario 2021 and more in the future) to appeal to both kids and adults
Opening stores all over in order to strengthen their brand

Disney probably have no intention making to help Nintendo become bigger faster, and allowing Sora in Smash will give Nintendo attention from more people....

Given Sakurai's statement about "being aware of there being too many swordsmen" came after the Byleth controversy, if said statement can be taken at face value then we could say Byleth pretty much "stole" Sora's spot.

I don't like Sora or Kingdom Hearts and this news is like one character slot not wasted. I never thought Sora would be a good representation without Disney characters anyway. If Square Enix is going to add another fighter it should look more like this:

If Disney wants to join in the fun I'd love if they gave us someone they bought up from Lucas Arts: Purple Tentacle (from the classic Maniac Mansion) or Guybrush Threepwood (from Monkey Island), true gaming icons of many childhoods, and we don't have a point&click-adventure fighter in the game apart from Another Code and Hotel Dusk spirits.

I know many people want him but I'm certainly not one of them. Can't say I'm upset about this whatsoever. Lots of characters I'd want over this guy who is barely represented on Nintendo consoles to begin with.

Since they couldn't figure out a good way to use him they didn't have him. They do mention him by name in the film.

I can imagine that. Disney is incredibly territorial over their IP, more so than even Nintendo. I’m a librarian and Disney is notorious for suing libraries for screening their movies without having the proper screening license (keep in mind the library movie screenings almost never charge people to attend and usually cost the library, not just due to screening licenses but due to things like snacks or props if it’s an interactive movie).

Meanwhile, when I commented on reddit once that I was looking for any discounts on Mario Kart 8 for an upcoming library program, Nintendo of America commented instantly telling me to check my DMs. They’d sent a code.

Shame as I've never played a kingdom hearts game and hopefully this would have expedited it.

@readalie That’s awesome! I had a similar experience, when I was in school and Hyrule Warriors came out for Wii U my roommate had busted my Gamepad on accident. I called Nintendo and had just wondered how much it was to fix. I mentioned that I was in school and had a super limited budget, the rep sent me a replacement free of charge. I was blown away I’ve never had a company just do something like that.

@Ulysses I have zero doubt that Disney wanted Nintendo in their parks. It's also been pretty consistent that once your stuff is in Disney's ecosystem, they'll inevitably control (and very likely own) your IP. Nintendo wouldn't abide by that.

I don't see the point of Sora. People play the Kingdom Hearts games for the Disney characters and worlds. Sora is just the playable character but he isn't really a strong character and isn't the main point of those games.

@Muddy_4_Ever If I recall correctly, the Super Mario Bros. movie years ago was part of a plan by their former executive Jeffrey Katzenberg to do just that, but when that film fell flat on its face, all of those plans collapsed, too. And considering how the rights to Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and, presumably, any sequels and live-action films from that series went to Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, the upcoming Super Mario Bros. film has Illumination's involvement, and Super Nintendo World will be a part of Universal's theme parks, something tells me that the effects from the shameful development and results from that failure still linger even now.

I feel bad for Sora fans who play Smash, but personally, I hate Sora and would much prefer not to even see his face on the character selection screen. If he's offered individually and not part of any bundle, I'd consider that a fair compromise.

I would rather have the games on the Switch than Sora in Smash. However, it would be cool nevertheless!

Considering Sora is the name of one of the developers, his inclusion would be ironically interesting.

This is unsurprising. If Disney were to put a character into smash (which they might object to on principle, dissidia was changed to a FF title from a KH fighter because of Disney's objections) then it's going to be Mickey mouse or Donald, they gain very little by promoting a character that is not well associated with their brand after all.

@Tantani As someone with two kids and a household that is both a Nintendo and Disney fan, I find it hard to believe Mario is that much more recognizable than Mickey. Maybe he's right up there. But I'm more likely to see Mickey paraphernalia amongst the younger set than Mario. Not to say their isn't Mario and Nintendo stuff out there at all

And I absolutely don't think Disney is anywhere near afraid of Nintendo in any respect. Disney parks and resorts are too entrenched in the public conscious to be in any kind of trouble. And they just slaughtered the box office in 2019 and released a very good streaming service that is only going to get better

That's not to suggest Nintendo is any kind of slouch in the recognition department and that Super Nintendo World isn't an exciting prospect and will do more than well. But Nintendo has a long way to go before making a significant dent in Disney's dominance outside of video games

1. Kingdom Hearts is a Disney production.

2. He shares the same name as SORA Ltd

I wasn’t surprised to hear that Disney said no; “Sora appearing in a game with, fighting and possibly loosing to Mario, Snake, Cloud, Bayonetta, and Joker? NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!”

Dude, this is the same guy that claimed Nintendo had another remake for a Fire Emblem game planned for the Nintendo 3DS despite Intelligent systems specifically stating that Fire Emblem Echoes was their last game for the Nintendo 3DS.

@LUIGITORNADO I have been to a lot of Disney parks, and I don’t mean scared as in actual panic mode

But Nintendo is the one of the very few brands that can actually rival Disney in term of recognition, and Disney parks are on the decline as even the new Star Wars park did way under the expectation of Disney and the other parks that slowly losing momentum

Having someone like Nintendo to compete with them all of a sudden in both the Parks and the Movie department is a threat that is starting to build itself and might hurt them in the future

Where are you getting that Disney parks are on the decline?

Recent attendance has been up these last few months. The parks have been overcrowded the last 5-8 years.

They've been steadily increasing admission prices in hopes to bring attendance down because they've been so overcrowded. Also building more hotels, as they book out pretty quickly during holiday weeks/months.

I think you're overestimating Nintendo's brand. Nintendo fans often use the whole Mario vs Mickey argument as far as brand recognition, but fail to mention Disney's dozens of other properties that are easily more recognizable than Nintendo's other dozens of properties that are unrecognizable.

They compete for people's free-time because they are entertainment companies.

They responded to all KH Switch requests with another recollection - the "all in one" package - for PS4.
The first reply their tweet got was literally a gif of Patrick Star shaking an empty box with the Nintendo Switch logo on it.

Fingers crossed this leaves other Square characters up for the picking. I really enjoy Sora, but I'd much rather have Crono.

Hope it's not true cause he's still on my wishlist. He'd literally be the most unique "swordman" but knowing how lazy sakurai is with swords, he'd most definitely have generic slashes taken straight from other swordmen with basic magic attacks like fire, lighting, and ice blasts.

He has lots of great movesets but they'll all be discarded for sora's basic early game commands. So maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea afterall...

@Antraxx777 I think Mickey would be an awesome addition for all the reasons you mentioned. And to your point about his and Disney's image, it's not Disney is entirely squeaky clean in those respects. Disney has content that does push stuff to the edge. As for Mickey, you can look at his recent shorts on the Disney Channel to see that Mickey can and does have an edge as well.

I'd be happy for the many fans if he got in, but I don't like KH at all, especially after the first one, since they became a convoluted, nonsensical mess in terms of plot.
Also there aren't that many KH games on Nintendo hardware and all of them are spin-offs, and there are many other series more historically relevant than KH.

This is enough widely recognized franchise to make a Nintendo multiverse of movies that can collaborate all to for a smash bros movie at some point (just throwing ideas now but still)

Some of them might not be as big as some Disney franchises, but they are big enough and with parks and movies will become much more recognized really fast....

I wouldn't cry about it if he got put in, but I just can't bring myself to care about KH. I watched my cousin play the ps2 games back when and I just couldn't see the appeal. And the Giant Bomb quick look of the recent dlc was legit hilarious to me.

@Judal27 let me repeat this: he programmed Greninja alone, in one night, during his spare time, before the character even existed in Pokémon. As a lazy person myself, that is the farthest thing from laziness I can think of.

And yeah, clones and semi-clones exist, but it's not like they're all swordsman, and they're not added at the expense of "regular" ones.
If you think about it, if a character uses primarily a sword to attack you don't have much room for creativity (just like Little Mac, who only ever uses his fists), so I'd say he and his team did a great job all things considered.
And to top it all off there are at least 7 very different "templates" for swordsmen in Smash, not that few (Link, Marth, Ike, Cloud, Corrin, Hero, Byleth, if I'm not missing anyone).

Maybe it is for the better. I personally only enjoyed KH and a bit of KH2, but really only the first game. KH became too much of a complicated mess with its story and the KH series is more a movie at this point than a video game series. I heard that the new DLC is 4 hours long and 3 of these hours are cutscenes.

Plus, we really have enough sword fighters at the moment and anime boys. Although Sora's fighting style would also probably have him use a lot of magic and air combos. Whatever I can live without him.

If the rumor is really true then we can take him off the list and one of the slots goes to another character. I'm still hoping for Rayman and Crash Bandicoot. And also Shantae, although she has probably the lowest chances to get in.

Sora in Smash would've been a bad idea. I mean, it would be better for him to be in Dissidia: Final Fantasy NT and Opera Omnia, fighting alongside Squall and Cloud, and fighting for Materia. Maybe Crono or Randi would be better choices for a third Square Enix character, because Geno is already a spirit.

@clvr I think they said somewhere that to add fan requested characters like chrom and dark Samus, it would be better for them to be added as clones or something to that extent which is why they introduced the term echo, though I'm not sure.

If anything, long range fighters should be the ones with the least imaginative movesets considering they basically amount to shooting projectiles of some form. There is still lots of move potential for sword users without breaking the game or anything like that especially when you add in characters that can use magical properties with their swordplay like Sora.

I'd barely count byleth as a swordman considering how very little he actually uses it in its sword form. But I would add shulk and Robin to an extent. And even with those, the templates still share some similarities.

I agree that there'll just be a point where characters will always just feel similar no matter what. But I don't think that limit is reached just yet, sakurai and co just keep making them too similar. That's why I consider them lazy when it comes to swordsmen. Also, it always confuses me why swordmen get so much hate for being many and similar, when the melee type also has that problem too.

@Arkay I happened to find this particular image while searching Metroid art; I'm happy to learn that it's from one of the game manuals itself. I've played the entirety of Metroid Prime Trilogy, but only on the Wii U via the eShop.

What I wouldn't sometimes give to have proper printed manuals again....

Disney thinks it got one over Nintendo, but this is not a loss at all for Smash. I'd rather have more iconic characters than Sora. KH isn't all that great past the first couple of games, anyway.

It looks like Fighter Pass 2 was only going to have five characters at first, but Sakurai got the rights to use Sora just before Fighter Pass 1 ended. Looks like there’s some truth to this article after all.
