After a recent rumour, Nintendo yesterday lifted the lid on N64 games for its Switch Online service. They'll be arriving "late" next month as part of an 'Expansion Pass' which also includes Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) titles.
Fans have been spotting some small differences between regions - like the addition of Custom Robo and Custom Robo V2 in Japan, and also a six-button Sega Mega Drive controller. Now, word seems to have spread about how Nintendo has gone to the extent of making an official North American box art for Sin & Punishment here in the west, to display on Switch Online.
The arcade-rail shooter co-developed by Treasure (known for Gunstar Heroes, Ikaruga, and more) was released on the N64 in the year 2000, exclusively in Japan. Seven years later it got a release on the Wii Virtual Console and eventually followed with a Wii U release. Back then, box art changes weren't really necessary. Here's the Japanese box art, in case you can't remember:

Limited Run's owner, Josh Fairhurst, has also seen the above North American box art doing the rounds and has noted how it would be a "dream" to work on a physical cartridge release of this game for a platform like the Nintendo 64.
What do you think of this localised box art for Sin & Punishment? Would you like to see the game get a physical release in North America and Europe one day? Leave a comment down below.

Wow, that's kinda cool. It was obviously rushed based on how cropped it is, but the fact that this happened at all brings me joy.
I'd buy a physical copy immediately. Really happy nintendo is including S&P in the first group of games and giving it some attention.
Strange, considering other initially Japan-exclusive titles such as Mario’s Super Picross, Panel de Pon and Super Puyo Puyo 2 retained their original Japanese box arts.
I'd love a physical release, but keep Limited Run and that crap away.
@EVIL-C I don't think Nintendo would let Limited Run make a physical version of one of their games.
That's really stylish! Very Y2K Future-cool.
I was so glad to be introduced to this on the Wii. Love this cover!
Still enjoy Star Successor to this day. Definitely release these more permanent.
@EVIL-C What's up? Limited Run Games is amazing. There's so many things we wouldn't have physical versions of it it wasn't for them.
Looks ace! My teenage self would have bought this back in the day on the strength of the box art alone
It’s almost as if Nintendo was getting ready to announce a third entry in the series…
Not well thought out. You can't even see Saki's weapon, and Airan's is clipped off. Wouldn't have passed back in those days.
@JustMonika not so cool that Asia released games that had English support then have it removed because limited run are planning to publish said game at some point in the future. AKA One Step From Eden. This gets unnecessary expensive for European gamers.
I just really miss Treasure beat/shoot-em-ups. When this was released on the Wii VC to play alongside the (then) brand new and brilliant sequel it gave me some of the greatest gaming related happiness I ever had.
I've complained about the service enough these last few days so I'm just gonna say that this one is one of my all time favorites and a definite contender for my favorite N64 game period. I still do fire up my Wii now and then to play this one.
@Fake-news Like stuff from Playasia that's on Switch and has English subtitles? I'll be getting the physical version of Fatal Frame: Maiden of the Black Water and special edition of If My Heart Had Wings from Playasia next month for Switch. I can't wait!
@Fake-news I think this happened with Clannad for Switch because I don't believe the Japanese version has English subtitles. I maybe wrong. I'm getting the collectors edition which was released with help from LRG. That's gonna run me and $200 to $250 on eBay but it's Clannad and the extras are very impressive so it's worth it to me.
I know this may sound ridiculous but I wish Nintendo would allow Switch owners who purchased the VC versions of Wii and Wii U classic titles to have free access to only the titles they paid for before on the Switch. It’s getting annoying to not only have to pay each time to play the same classic games on a new Nintendo console but to have to start a new save file from scratch. If Nintendo wants to keep charging for access to play the same games, why not just do the VC on Switch and change another upgrade fee like on the Wii U?
I’m very happy this is making its way to the lunch lineup. I actually still have not ever played it despite being available on Wii U and I think Wii? I know it’s a cult classic but I still managed to never dip my toes in. That’s going to change though- I’m planning on getting the official N64 controller and the expansion pass. I think it’s really cool they got “official” artwork in place for it too.
@Don I would pay an extra $10 per game if it meant I could play it offline and I could “own” it like I used to be able to like on Wii and Wii U.
There are a few staples I’d like to keep around including Faxanadu, Star Fox 64, Castlevania 64… there’s a bunch of others but point is, I’d pay more, a la carte, to have said game outside of a subscription.
@JustMonika @Fake-news the JP Retail One Step from Eden has English on (unless they patched it out since I last played)
Same with Clannad (and the spin off game though I cant verfiy the spin off as I havent got round to playing it)
Is this boxart even real? Where did the tweeter find it? I checked the direct and it shows the Japanese boxart... If it IS going to have a Western boxart I wonder if it's been translated since the other Japanese NSO games don't.
@Burntbreadman they removed English for LRG... and that's terrible.
Don't get me wrong I probably buy a game a month from them, but they're not the gods of physical they make out to be.
@Don I agree, it's frustrating as they could easily implement this. But, then I remember NSO is the equivalent t of half a Just Eat order, a year, so it's not a deal breaker. I do wish they'd give a bit more to their biggest supporters though.
Please keep Josh Fairhurst away from any games people actually want as physical editions.
This game is absolute perfection.
I wish Nintendo had done a N64 classic mini instead of this drip feeding nonsense behind a higher tier paywall.
Physical copies would be equally good, or even better, so if that means limited run, then great.
I also agree the way Nintendo handles its online service is poor. I mean, why can I not keep and carry my downloads/purchases from the wii virtual console, over to the switch?
The Nintendo way of doing things is so fragmented and illogical, from a customer/consumer point of view.
Haven't seen this box yet, but if it's official I bet it's finally fully localized!
@piecez As someone who missed out the NES and SNES Classic Minis and now have to pay $300 if I want one... yeah no. I'm quite okay that these are coming to NSO rather than a Classic Mini that will be understocked and scalped. I would like the option to buy some of these games for my Switch, but I think you have a very rose-tinted view on the Classic Minis as not everyone had the chance or the wealth to just get one. NSO is a much more affordable way for a majority of Switch owners to play some of these games rather than hunting down an N64 Mini that will probably end up running someone $60 if they are lucky to get it in stores to $500 in the second-hand market if they missed out.
Annoyingly, the sequel end on a bit of a potential cliffhanger. I would do bad, bad things for a third entry.
Nice art. Easily one of my top N64 games and its Wii sequel is also awesome. I really hope they make a new entry.
"The arcade-rail shooter co-developed by Treasure (known for Gunstar Heroes, Ikaruga, and more) was released on the N64 in the year 2000, exclusively in Japan."
Well, that's mostly true. But the Chinese iQue also saw the release of Sin & Punishment back in 2004.
Come to think of it, they also got Dr. Mario 64 (which Japan didn't until Nintendo Puzzle Collection for the Gamecube) and Doubutsu no Mori (which the west didn't get until, again, the Gamecube as Animal Crossing).
@JustMonika People gripe about Limited Run because they don't understand economics of scale.
Amazing game, and the sequel. Hopefully this will come to switch. Especially now the N64 controller is on the way.
Give me F-zero, F-zero Climax, F-zero X (+ expansion) and GX in a cartridge. F-zero All-stars HD!
@HammerGalladeBro True... but I think the article was more just talking about on the original hardware. That and I think the article highlighting the Western release makes sense considering this website mostly caters to English-speaking people in Western nations.
Though technically speaking Sin and Punishment was also available in Hong Kong as an import on N64.
@JustMonika Artificial scarcity, expensive shipping, loooong fulfillment times, one window of opportunity to buy or its gone forever. Now multibillion dollar publishers like Ubisoft, Konami Disney, Bethesda, etc.. are using them when it defeats the entire original purpose of this idea. Let's start there with the laundry list of criticism and s**tiness with this business model.
Discovered this on the wiiu VC. It's excellent, right up there with Star Fox 64.
They could have isolated the character art, shuffled them into a better composition for a horizontal format, and then adjusted the background.
It's the normal cover with a N64 side bar super imposed over the top?
I was gutted when this got it's european release cancelled back in the day. So glad people get an opportunity to play it. It would have been amazing if the light gun add on had materialised for it too.
Loved the Wii VC game.
If this Treasure classic is getting some limelight, maybe Mischief Makers has a shot of appearing. I never got to play that game.
I hope one day we'll get a third Sin & Punishment game, Not only because the 2 we have are great, but also because they feel like the first 2 parts of a trilogy.
@EmirParkreiner would love that two. But are Treasure still alive? It has been so quiet…
(Oh if we’re talking Treasure: a port of gradius V would be nice too)
So, Box Art Brawl next week for this @Liam Doolan?
@Meteoroid Yeah I know.. but since it's Clannad and I'm already a huge fan, I specifically want the expensive collector's edition that LRG released last year. That'll run me at least $200 to $230 off eBay. Hoping to get it by the end of the year. Tomorrow I'll be getting in World End Syndrome which cost me $150 from a Canadian seller. I know for a fact that the European special edition is the only one with English subtitles for that. Don't understand why they didn't do a North American release though like they did with Aokana which I'm currently playing and only cost me $40 for the special edition off Amazon.
@romanista
They are still alive as a company, but they didn't develop any new games in a long time (2013?).
I guess they would have to hire new staff for a new S&P, but that should not be too difficult If Nintendo pays the bills.
