Re: PSA: Monster Hunter Stories 3 Switch 2 Trial Demo Now Available, Save Data Carries Over

@Johnny44 Hey I liked Pragmata and praised it for looking good enough and playing really well. That demo might even have swayed me to buy it, which I didn't originally plan on. I can't help that so many things around S2 are negatives to me, but I really have no problem admitting the positives. @Gohanjin can corroborate my issues with the demo here, and so did others in a forum thread. It just is what it is.

@SBandy1 The marketing around Wii U was awful, and retailers were skeptical. Nintendo also didn’t produce nearly as many units up front. The discrepancy isn’t strange at all. I have the same issues with sales numbers from Sony, I’m not playing sides here.

Why do we trust corporations with estimated statistical shenanigans like this just because they’re one we tend to favour?

Use some critical thinking with your common sense. Nintendo’s stocks are down, their fiscal year report will do anything it can to legally make itself look as good as possible to investors. From Nintendo’s POV, having sold 17m consoles to retailers is obviously money in the bank. It’s great. It doesn’t mean 17m people have bought the console.

Let me be more constructive: These sales numbers are Nintendo's internal estimates of individual customer sell-through rates. That is, they know they've sold this many to retailers, and they're guessing/estimating how many have actually been sold to customers.

Given that expectations where high based on Switch 1 lifetime sales, and that they produced a vast surplus of consoles this time around in time for launch, retailers would've bought a lot more stock. These numbers do not prove sales, however.

Re: Switch 2 Storms Towards Its Forecast Target With 17.37 Million Units Sold

It's so weird seeing this because so few people I know have gotten one, and I mean in a very extended network of both friends and colleagues and in the indie dev scene. Have Nintendo perhaps hit more new demographics with Switch 2..? Curious.

There is a hint at the bottom of the graph: "Internal estimates of unit sales to individual customers". So what this depicts is how many units Nintendo have sold to retailers, and estimate have then been sold to customers.

These are not the real sales numbers. They produced a lot more consoles for launch this time around, and also sold way more to retailers than Switch 1 since that followed the fiasco of the Wii U, so retailers weren't willing to buy a large stock. These are statistical shenanigans.

@Kochambra Ok then they can also cut the asking price. Jokes aside, they've not just reduced grind and backtracking, they've removed what many consider to be important islands and story segments entirely. The game is also so easy now it practically plays itself.

I'll just get the 3DS version if I feel like it, I'm fine taking my time with a large game.

When I say that Nintendo has changed fundamentally, this is what I mean. Switch 1/2 are both soulless, flat, featureless husks of hardware compared to the company's best consoles. From DS onwards this kind of attention to detail, ambience, and playfulness set Nintendo apart from their corpodrone counterparts.

Now it's just black/white flat theme and nothing but a few sparse beeps and boops on buttons.

It's honestly sad. Makes me feel very ambivalent listening to this, but lovely project. I still use my 3DS semi-frequently and appreciate it so much.
