Re: Soapbox: Dragon's Dogma Is A Janky, Weird, Ageing RPG, And Everyone Should Play It

Octorok385

@Mii_duck This is the best review I've seen for DD. I got the Switch version as a gift, from someone who played it to death, and I could not, for the life of me, understand why anyone would play this game. The world is dull, but fine, the characters are dull, but fine, and the combat is OK, I guess. So I played ten hours, got bored and moved on. Then a few weeks later, I played another ten hours. And then later on, I got sucked back in again. There's something endearing about the jank, even though there are objectively better examples of action/combat/RPG games out there.

Re: AM2R Creator Isn't A Fan Of Metroid Dread's E.M.M.I. Encounters

As the only person on Earth who isn't a fan of Zero Missions tacked-on stealth section, I was a little relieved when the EMMI zones ended up not being a stealth exercise. The easiest way to clear all of them, by far, is to gun it through. This does make your first playthrough kind of frustrating, since you don't have any idea where to go and the cost for taking a wrong turn or dropping down in the wrong place is sometimes instant death, but I find that those sections are rarely a hang up on replays.

Re: Capcom's Former Switch Exclusive Monster Hunter Rise Is Off To A Great Start On Steam

Octorok385

I found Rise to be pretty easy, but I also played every MonHun since Tri. I got a few friends to jump in on Rise, what with the popularity of the Switch, and the reality is that Rise is still a really dense game to get into for casual gamers. At this point I actually prefer the stream-lined experience Rise gives over World's, especially when it comes to multiplayer and grinding out hunter levels. Plus, and I'm sorry for this, Tempered and ArchTempered monsters aren't fun or interesting. I just don't care.

Re: Capcom Promises To Fix "Known Issues" With Monster Hunter Stories 2 In A Future Update

Octorok385

@Jamie_R Part of the problem with this is that publishers set dates months in advance of a game's release, and sometimes the cost of delaying publishing far outweighs the cost of continuing to support via patches. The days of buying a SNES cart and getting a complete product, for better or for worse, are done. And some of these bugs are things that might not be caught in internal testing anyway. I'd rather see companies continue to improve the product after launch than to release a game, discover a game breaking bug and then saying "OH WELL, published is published."

Re: Nintendo Denies Claims It'll Make Increased Profits With Switch OLED, "No Plans" For Other Model

Octorok385

@RupeeClock It isn't that much of a surprise. Screens seem to get cheaper every year, so if they can start to produce a portable device with a more appealing screen why wouldn't they? The emphasis on the portable side of things shows they aren't trying to compete with the PS5 and XBox, and since a lot of gamers use their switch primarily as a handheld I'm sure there will be some market for it. The thing is we ("core gamers," as Nintendo calls us) WANT a more powerful Switch, but that would likely cost much more for them to produce right now.

Re: Reminder: Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Expansion Pass - Wave 1 Is Now Available

Octorok385

@Pandy Same, I preordered way back. I don't think there were even hints, other than "More characters and weapons maybe? We don't know." Still sold, I've loved everything about my time with this game.
EDIT: I'm also noticing, after spending an hour or so with the new content, that Robbie and Purah are definitely the focus of the new stuff, even if they aren't playable. I'm actually finding myself pretty pleased with the whole package.

Re: Reminder: Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Expansion Pass - Wave 1 Is Now Available

Wow so it seems like the update is a little meatier than I expected. There is a whole web of new quests to complete, high level EX challenge levels which seem to involve defeating major enemies in specific ways, and also there are elite monsters that seem to spawn randomly on the world map? "Giant Chu Chu" was a lousy way to explain this feature, it's actually fun. It's like they're trying to not sell this expansion. Very pleased so far, I guess we'll see how long it all is?

I remember when everyone was CERTAIN that Robbie and Purrah were going to be playable leading up to the game's initial release because they were featured in the promotional artwork. I also remember when people were CERTAIN Robbie and Purrah would be the first wave of DLC because of promotional artwork. I'm going to laugh my ass off when the next wave of DLC is playable Hyrule Bass and Octorok, and still no Robbie or Purrah.

Also what even is the Ancient Lab? It says "Test yourself," but not about what it actually is. Are we getting a full Adventure Mode sized set of challenges, like in the Hyrule/Fire Emblem Warriors DLCs? People might be less negative about this whole thing if they knew what was actually in it. As it stands, it's basically a 20 dollar mystery box.

Re: Study Suggests Nintendo Switch Is The Most Eco-Friendly Console On The Market

Octorok385

@Judal27 I'm always sort of curious what software Sony puts out that's on par with major Zelda or Mario releases. Nintendo games hold their value for years (sometimes decades) after release, so why would Nintendo devalue their primary product? They usually produce hardware for different budgets, but a Mario game will always be a Mario game. There's a reason people still talk about Breath of the Wild but don't talk about (looks up Sony equivalent) Horizon: Zero Dawn nearly as much. Sony puts out the equivalent of popcorn films that everyone can consume and then forget about as soon as the next thing comes along, whereas Nintendo puts out classics that are revisited well beyond the life of the console generation. Remember the last time the Twisted Metal or Armored Core franchises dominated the conversation? Neither do I. But during that same time period Nintendo put out Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, GoldenEye and Smash Bros. I wouldn't put my games on sale either, if my games were worth the price of admission.

Man, I remember when the Wii U was originally out, and that low energy usage was touted as one of the design features. I can't remember the exact wording, but the concept was that the Wii U would be the go-to "always on" entertainment box for your living room. Games, streaming, plus your regular TV remote, all in one thing that hardly used any power. Course that also meant that it wasn't running powerful hardware. Mine is still hooked up, primarily as a Xenoblade X box.

PORT IT.
