Smash fighters have received their own reveals as of late simply because of the lack of directs. They used to be mostly announced in directs before the hiatus.

That said, the new fighter is probably going to get its own showcase after the direct, or not too long after anyway.

Unless it's another Fire Emblem character, I'm not interested. Smash isn't really my thing, y'know?

Sakurai, please don't announce something in the middle of the direct. My toad heart can't take it.

I am doubtful, but if it were real, I am not sure I would say no. It will probably depend on the rest of this pass for me though. Pass 1 was great for me, but not enjoying Pass 2 as much.

I'm guessing 2 -3 minutes for a character reveal, a full 20 minutes of Sakurai pushing buttons closer to release.

Unless they are announcing a port of SSB for Wii U. 😂

I think we might be getting some kind of new feature in addition to a fighter. a new single player campaign would be pretty cool

A third fighter pass with half the second still to be revealed seems unlikely.
I expect a new fighter will be revealed and then they'll get a dedicated video shortly after.

Honestly, I’m probably more interested in the new game announcements. Smash really isn’t my thing.

Man, I thought Directs were done. I am so happy to have been proven wrong. Can't wait to see who the new character is.

I seem to recall it being mentioned somewhere that the second Season Pass would be the last and pretty much wrap up the game. Of course I'd like to be wrong, because more new fighters would mean more chances for folks to see their favorite characters make it in.

Man I really hope this Direct isn’t all about Smash Bros. Not really a SMB fan, and quite frankly I couldn’t care any less about the roster additions or new Amibos being released.

@Thumbsofsteel It' won't be. Remember, Smash Bros. is only a small piece of the overall pie that is Nintendo. For all we know, we could end up getting either a Sonic Rep for his 30th Anniversary. like Amy Rose, due to the fact that we need a NEW remix of "My Sweet Passion!" Or we could get someone else. But Sakurai has agreed that we have too many Fire Emblem Characters. Yet if we get Waluigi, then counting the Mario Sub-Series (Yoshi, Donkey Kong, WarioWare) as Mario reps, then we have TOO MUCH MARIO CHARACTERS! Don't forget, there's The Legend of Zelda's 35th Anniversary kicking off this month, too.

I personally would not be too keen to have a third pass. Sure, we all want to see new characters coming to Smash with a never-ending roster, but there comes a point where the total cost of the DLC would just get too high. Both fighter passes already come close to the price of the base game; I'm not saying that they are bad value, but I think if they added even more DLC on top of what we already have the price would leave a sour taste in the mouths of many. At this point, I'd rather wait for a new-gen port of Smash Ultimate that includes all current DLC on cart, and perhaps adds new over time; to me it seems almost a given that something like this would happen in the future.

Either way, I'm looking forward to the reveal. I hope it'll be a nice surprise for everyone!

God, I was so excited to see 50 minutes but if a lot of that time is spent revealing and talking about a new Smash character that will be so disappointing.

Eh either Monster Hunter or maybe a gen 8 pokemon would interest me. I already have my dream character in smash, that being Hero.

Now that I think about it, Mordegon from dq11 would be kinda cool but extremely unlikely. Maybe a mii costume instead

@YoshiAngemon you really can’t say that Mario has to many characters because that’s nintendos main franchise that got em all started, so of course they would keep on giving the series characters. Aside from that it’s time for my main man doom slayer to get in, or crash. Just imagine doom slayer, where how all of the doom games soundtracks are rock, so you could have him and Mario fight to rip and tear.

@Harmonie Smash was also the biggest Switch release of 2018. Subsequent non-Smash Directs haven't dedicated a substantial portion of time to new stuff about the game.

@Ralizah We don't know that this won't be a similar situation and that Nintendo doesn't have anything to show for here and just pads out the time revealing a Smash character and talking about them. As we've seen in Smash Directs, Sakurai can take a 30 minutes just revealing and talking about a character.

@OnlyItsMeReid Sort of what I am thinking. I am fairly sure that Sakurai himself said in the presentation where the second pass was announced that he was not personally planning on doing the second pass, but perhaps just one or two extra characters. Could be what happens now if more are indeed coming.

@Harmonie We don't know that nuclear war won't break out tomorrow, either. Nothing is absolute.

With that said, previous non-Smash-specific directs haven't dedicated a ton of time to updates about the game and Switch has a lot of notable upcoming releases that need to be discussed, so there's almost no justification for paranoia about Smash info taking up half the direct.

Hopefully not for that long, who am I kidding, will probably half the running time.

@Ralizah They certainly could have a decent amount of stuff to announce and not spend a lot of time on Smash, but the way they have acted as of late does not give me much hope.

I don't remember the last time we had a good Direct, TBH. The last one we had the "major" announcement was a remastered port of a Xenoblade game. SMH.

With Monster Hunter a month away, that's who the next character will represent.

Sony is going to sell about 37 PS5s in Japan in late March and April.

I hope it's a NINTENDO character as I'm tired of third party fighters now. Hoping, as always for Toad to join for the fight (can't believe he's been in none of the games) but Waluigi or Birdo would be fun too!

Crash Bandicoot and Ryu Hayabusa are likely candidates but a first party like Saki (Sin and Punishment), Mike Jones (StarTropics), or one of the cop from Astral Chains are possible too.

i think i have around 1500 hours of smash ultimate (and it' my very first one).. i have both season pass, i put on elite 4 of the DLC characters.. and they are SO MUCH fun to play with.. I mean "no matter who they announces", for sure it will be fun... i've been playing with min min (although i have absolutely no will to play ARMS) she is so cool.. and fun.. next will be steve (and again, i have never ever played minecract.. and im eager to play as sephiroth... smash is amazing!!

I would love anything that extends the game.. a new campaign, more modes, more assists trophies, stages.. another season pass..

Y'know, as much as I always love new fighters, I'd love to see like, a custom break the targets mode or something wacky like that... okay maybe I just really miss break the targets.

@Yosher it still feels odd though because they used NOT to tell in advance that smash fighters would be included in the Direct so that it ultimately always revealed as a "surprise"(but one predictable enough we'd asks ourselves WHEN they'd appear in the Direct).

So I can't help but wonder. Plus with almost three years after release I can't help but shake the feeling Smash it's due for -something- more than just "another fighter"?

Like, game modes or specifically "new" stuff that can be played in single player or coop.

Trying to keep expectations low however but the game does feel due for more than just a DLC and something like a true "expansion"(kind of like Splatoon 2 did) before they call a close to this one.

I think the only new thing they can do for next consoles is go on a 3D plane. I am not sure how effective that will be.

@Christofu honestly I miss subspace Emissary and the way it played like a single player / coop brawler. World of Light is nice but basically the Event Battles mode of previous games with just a shinier coat of paint.

Meanwhile the outright "1-2 players battling horses and bosses in ever changing locales"(and all the cinematics' crossover interaction hijinks) of Subspace Emissary is definitely something I feel the franchise is missing.

But on the other hand even with that weird feeling that Smash is due for "more" than yet another fighter... I don't see how something Subspace Emissary-grade could happen shorts of a new game(to not say short of making -it- the new game).

And "more fighting game, but with a radical change that could push off the entire community" isn't really how you'd create something "fresh" for Smash.

Honestly they'd probably get much more mileage out of something like "keep Smash as-is but bring an expansion or brand new game focusing on the crossover beat-em-up SP/coop hijinks of Subspace Emissary to a new public".

The old game would remain to enjoy as they already enjoyed it meanwhile the beat-em-up/coop-focused expansion or such could draw from different crowds by doing something different than what the current game does(focusing on other experiences than "2-4 characters fighting in a mostly static arena") without having to radically change the original experience.

personally I would love to see Dixie Kong. cannot believe she is not in the game yet. I would even take her as a shadow of diddy. just please nintendo put her in there.

We finally get a Direct and its going to be 15 minutes of games we already know about, then 35+ minutes of nothing but Smash. I am so sick of this game and its DLC. I realize people have already bought packs and there's a rabid fan base, but have a separate Smash event for crap's sake. These over produced, dragged out reveals take up far too much real-estate in these announcements and Directs. I enjoy Smash with friends, but there's already 80+ fighters and a crap ton of stages. Can we move on? Or at least separate them from Directs? It would be best for everyone. Rant (mostly) over.

What I want more than anything else in Smash is the option to reorganise the character/stage select screens.

@MysteryCupofJoe I think smash maybe stuck in 2d forever. 8 players in a 3d arena? I can not even begin to think how that would work. unless they started over and put 1on 1 fighting and tag in partners. I am afraid nintendo has backed themselves into a developement corner.
And with such a drastic change, as much as some nintendo fans cry about everything. like mario 3d world, pokemon sword and shield. you know not being able to play 4 to 8 characters at once would throw some fans into a rage. So I do not know where the series goes from here. I guess we just will have to wait and see.

@TheBigK I'm the opposite. Because of all the Smash characters, I'm not buying any more fighter passes unless they put Doom Slayer, Travis Touchdown or Ryu Hayabusa in them. Any other characters and it's a hard pass from me. Maaaaybe Master Chief, but I'm not sure that would happen.

@Ludovsky I wouldn't expect anything beyond fighters, stages, music and spirits anymore honestly. I believe they said that the last mode update has already happened, when that mode dropped (I forgot what it was, specifically).

That said I still want certain small QoL updates like being able to rearrange the character select screen because my OCD does not like the mess that it is now.

Elma for Smash, leading into Xenoblade X Deluxe Edition. Top it off with BotW2, available after this Direct!

Just remember: There's a chance that we might get Dr. Eggman, voiced by Mike Pollock, who would say "Now you know why I am the best!" I can imagine one of four candidates for this next Fighter:

• A Monster Hunter rep, specifically from Monster Hunter Rise due to how much marketing there is
• Doom Guy, as the previous DLC was catered primarily to Japanese audiences
• A Shin Megami Tensei rep, based on possible release window and assuming Atlus is getting another rep
• A rep from The Legend of Zelda, as the Direct is not too far from the 35th Anniversary of Zelda (and let's be honest. It's long overdue).

@Christofu yeah. I mean I completed it and I loved that the MAP itself at least featured plenty elements of exploration(and realizing that definitely helped my enjoyment) despite initially seeming to be just a case of node-based movement. Or that it even had light puzzles if I recall well.

But that the fights themselves were just basically glorified "event mode" matches felt a bit disappointing except for the couple of traditional boss fights.

Don't get why people assuming it going to mainly focus on smash, if anything it probably be about improvements happening to thier online service which will benefit smash online, with a slight chance of a character reveal. I feel Nintendo we talk about thier success during 2020, the future of directs, Zelda 35th anniversary plans and some new games announcements.

For some reason with Xbox teasing some reveal, rumours of Microsoft helping Nintendo on developing thier online services we may get some Microsoft Nintendo announcement.

@Dr_Evil_64 The Xbox reveal is happening a few hours before the Direct, likely to be double framerate enhancements for Series X|S so like Fallout 4 becoming 60fps.
