Re: Review: Collection of SaGa Final Fantasy Legend - A Nostalgic Curiosity, But That's About It

Octorok385

FFL2 is actually one of my favorite RPGs... I hate games that involve mindless grinding for exp, and the "randomness" of Human and Mutant stat growth is still refreshing. It should be noted that stat growth isn't actually random. HP growth is fairly consistent, and your other stats (Strength, Agility, Magic) have a chance of growing after any battle that you use them. So if your human uses a Rapier, their Agility has a chance to go up after every battle. Not to mention the Magi, the key items you hunt down in the game. These can be directly equipped to give an immediate stat boost or elemental affinity, taking a human from a blank slate to a Strength/Agility machine instantly. I never got the hang of Monsters, who follow a very much set progression, but Robots are the opposite of random. Their stats are directly related to their gear, and they have the unique property of being able to repair/recharge their gear at an inn.

It's funny that so many people are annoyed by the price. I'm ready to drop 20 bucks just to be able to replay FFL2 on something other than my Game Boy Pocket.

EDIT: I will add that I'm one of probably 15 people on the planet that was excited when Legend of Legacy was released. An RPG with no dialogue and tons of opaque systems to figure out? Yes, please.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Character Designer Celebrates Third Anniversary With Some New Artwork

Octorok385

Maybe artists shouldn't have to cater to your delicate sensibilities when it comes to what a female super hero should look like? While we're at it maybe male super heroes shouldn't have unrealistic arms, chests and abs, because fEeLiNgS. It's a literal fantasy. If you don't like it don't engage with the product.
EDIT: Just going to add in, for maximum hot take exposure, the first time I played Xenoblade 1 was with the definitive edition's release, and after 10 years of hearing how great the story was, I was HUGELY let down. A party full of characters with virtually no character growth. Does Melia even talk after her chapter? Shulk is the only character whose motivations ever even shift, and his solution is to do the EXACT SAME THING HE WAS GOING TO DO ORIGINALLY. Effs in the chat. Every main character in Xenoblade 2 goes through events that change their perspective (except for Tora, but see Poppi), and the entire world concept/design was leagues beyond what XC1 attempted. /hottake

Re: Why Pokémon Sword And Shield Got DLC Instead Of A Standalone Follow-Up

Octorok385

I think that the real question is whether the two "version" model makes sense anymore, given that the game is on a full console and costs full price out the door. I'm not buying into both Sword and Shield for minimal differences, it doesn't make sense. You can trade for anything from either game, so the only functional difference are the gym leaders. Just release one version and have players choose different paths or something once they start.

I am surprised at the number of people outraged by a company making decisions to increase revenue and profit. Pokemon isn't a charity or public service, it's a product. It makes sense for Game Freak, The Pokemon Company and Nintendo to want to get the most out of their development investment. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they went for a second round of DLC based off of the same world and engine.

Re: Hands On: Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Makes You Wish You Didn't Know How It Ends

Octorok385

I'm dreading the story for Age of Calamity. The Warriors stories have all been sort of hacked together, fan-fic style scenarios that are just an excuse for characters to meet, and that's actually sort of fine for a Warriors title, but this is BotW. Starting the game by having a guardian inexplicably travel through time is a head-scratcher, though. We were already playing a prequel, so why muddy the waters even more with time travel? Can't we just play the events that led to the Calamity?

Re: With The DLC All Wrapped Up, Here Are The 234 Pokémon Still Unavailable In Sword And Shield

Octorok385

The big question will be what happens with the main series next? Do we see a remake in the Gen 8 engine? Or do we skip straight to a Gen 9. I think it's most likely that we see continued development within SwSh, with another expansion set for next year. Hopefully we also see some virtual console action. I could care less about remakes, but I'd love to be able to play some of the classics on Switch.

Re: Review: Super Mario Bros. 35 - A Six-Month Jolt Of Life For An Iconic Classic

Octorok385

I've won about 1/3 of my matches so far, and while the game is a blast I wish I could actually use the later stages. There's a big difference between repeating 1-1 and 1-2 and the later areas, where unexpected enemies can really jam up your progress. Hopefully once the game is out a few weeks we'll start to see a bigger variety in starting levels. As it stands, there is zero benefit to playing a harder level because it has fewer items, harder platforming and essentially gives everyone else a leg up in terms of gathering easy coins and power ups. I hate rolling a castle because there are usually very few enemies, which means you're losing time. It really rewards replaying the first two stages over and over to rack up high coin counts and items.

Re: The Next Pokémon Trading Card Expansion, Vivid Voltage, Has Been Revealed

Octorok385

I played a few years ago, back at the end of Gen 4 and just through the launch of the Black and White base set. When my kid got into the TCG last year and we started looking at the current cards I didn't even know what I was looking at. The meta is insane, and expensive to get running with real cardboard. I jokingly made an Eternatus VMax (look it up, it's bananas) to play, then realized that might be the most reasonable approach.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Open-World Games

Octorok385

I have a problem with Xenoblade Chronicles being called "open world." Unless we're talking Xenoblade Chronicles X, which lets you travel virtually anywhere as soon as you clear the tutorial, the Xenoblade games are very deliberately paced JRPGs. Xenoblade 1 metes out a single area at a time, and Xenoblade 2 is segmented up into titans. Now both of these games are amazing, and both do include huge chunks of game to explore, but calling them "open world" just isn't accurate.

Re: Pokémon HOME Servers Struggle To Keep Up With The Demand For Shiny Zeraora

Octorok385

Hm my Home launches, but no 'mon? I definitely did the raid a few times and transferred a Pokemon to Home.

I don't understand why the distribution isn't via Mystery Gift, the existing distribution tool? I mean I get that it forces people to try another service, but really Pokemon Company? I just bought an expansion, why should I be downloading another app in order to participate in the expansion celebration? BACK IN MY DAY you just had to bring your DS to the bench outside of Game Stop to get your specials...

Re: There's A New Exploit In Pokémon Sword And Shield That's Ruining Competitive Play

Octorok385

@Heavyarms55 Sorry just saw this. I'm talking about the exploit where you toss in a wishing piece and quit if it isn't the beam you want, and then you can load up to check the Pokemon, and if it isn't what you want you can tap Home and change your clock settings. It lets you fish for the best Pokemon while collecting tons of watts, and better Pokemon mean better rewards after the battle.
