Update [Fri 29th Oct, 2021 03:45 BST]: The Wave 2 DLC for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is now officially live. To access this content, you'll need to first update your own copy of the game to version 1.3.0 which was made available earlier this week.
Original story [Wed 27th Oct, 2021 03:45 BST]: Back in June, Nintendo and Koei Tecmo released the first wave of DLC content for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity - bumping the game up to version 1.2.0.
It's now sent version 1.3.0 live ahead of the Expansion Pass 'Wave 2' DLC, which officially arrives later this week on 29th October. It makes some adjustments in preparation for the release of Guardian of Remembrance and also addresses several issues, including a rare one that had the ability to halt game progress.
Here are the full patch notes, courtesy of Nintendo's official support page:
Ver. 1.3.0 (Released October 26, 2021)
-Made adjustments in preparation for Expansion Pass Wave 2: Guardian of Remembrance.
-Addressed several issues, including a rare case that prevented game progress.
This second DLC pack will come with a new playable character duo, new additional stages, and new story sequences. Here's a bit more about it from Nintendo's PR:
"Defend Hyrule as the quirky duo character, Purah & Robbie, and their array of ancient technology. See how places like the Coliseum and Kakariko Village looked 100 years in the past in new story stages. Learn more about the Champions and the mysterious Guardian in emotional new story sequences as the fight for Hyrule’s future continues! Players who purchase the Expansion Pass will also gain access to Wave 1 of the DLC, which is already available."

Oh wow I thought this was already out. Recently purchased the pass and have started playing and I am in love with this game. So much fun and it really feels like a companion game. And I love the additional glimpse into the lives of Hyrule’s people before everything went to ruin.
Does it address the molasses like frame rate?
sarcasm No?! Dang developers and their lazy ways! They should optimize! It’s not like the system is underpowered or anything…. Nope. It surely can’t be that! 🙄
Tried to go back but man oh man that frame rate is bad. Could be that I'm spoiled from the new gen.
@Tendogamerxxx Consider past Omega Force games aren't known for having the greatest of framerate on any consoles... I definitely think the developers are the one to blame, and not the hardware.
Another harder difficulty, just what we needed
It would have been cool if they add this to Nintendo Online Service Pack.
I was wishing for playable Purah since I first got the game, so, the Mrs and I will definitely be jumping back in. ^_^
... and by that I mean my IRL wife. ... I wasn't calling Purah my wife. Gotta be clear these days.
Pretty sure the secret character will be sooga.
Loved the game and will definitely play the dlc
@Floki @Tendogamerxxx
It’s very rarely ever the hardware. Sometimes it can be a little (PS3 Cell processor, N64 cartridge capacity, XBox One memory layout, to name some awkward hurdles), but most things are dev decisions. There’s no such thing as underpowered hardware - there’s just hardware and whatever software you decide to make for it.
How many PS5 or XBox Series X games are 4K120? Almost none, and only then the ones with simpler graphics. Any console has finite power and you can only use it for so many things. You have to make a balance between graphics, resolution and frame rate. That’s a compromise you have to make on any platform.
Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD were 1080p, but BOTW was 720p on the same system (Wii U). Was the same hardware suddenly underpowered? No, it’s the exact same console! The devs just wanted a prettier game at the expense of resolution.
Warriors games too. On Switch we’ve had FE at 720p60 or 1080p30, and the original Hyrule Warriors at 1080p 30-60. The fact that AoC can’t hit stable 30 is entirely a dev choice. They’ve over-reached on pretty graphics.
I hoped they'd improved the framerate when this DLC went out, but I see I was being too naive XD.
For now I'll keep passing on this game. Don't want to support lazy developers.
Did they fix the terrible frame rate?
@Ainze You pretty much summed up what I was saying all this time. The hardware is stifling creativity and artistic vision since the developer had to dumb down “pretty” graphics aka “over-reaching” according to you. There’s nothing pretty about AoC. If you think thats pretty, I’m selling a cute little poop with a bow on it I’m sure you’d be interested in.
The system is underpowered. Period.
Oh man! So excited! I totally forgot about the wave 2 and wondered when it was coming out... So now I got this and Mario Party to enjoy my short weekend 😅
@Chocobo_Shepherd I had a good laugh with that last sentence!
Happy to return to this one again, it’s a great game.
@Tendogamerxxx when a game is developed specifically for a system and can't run properly it's entirely the dev's fault. You could whine all you want about the switch not being powerful enough if it was a ps5/pc game ported to switch, but this is not the case. It's like saying the ps5 is "underportable" because the switch is. It makes no sense.
@Tendogamerxxx
By that reasoning, XBSX and PS5 also stifle creativity with their limited power. An RTX 3090 stifles creativity with its limited power. All of these products will be “slow” in 10 years time. Creativity isn’t about making the best thing ever - it’s about making the best you can with what you actually have. There are amazing looking games on Switch. And bad looking games too. And the same is true on PS5, GameCube, Dreamcast and SNES.
Just look at Pixar. Do you have any idea how long it takes to render just one of their movie frames? And they’re still trying to improve their animation further still. All creativity is relative. There is no absolute - there is no “enough”.
This game reminds me of everything wrong with 2020
@Ainze. Excellent points, well made.
Looks like I'll need to dive back into this one as well. Got if from my girlfriend for X-mas last year and played it a good bit, but I didn't really like the missions where you control the ancients, or whatever they're called.
I'm playing Hyrule Warriors at the moment. It's fun and I'm enjoying it, but not enough to invest in DLC I think. A bit repetitive, and 38 hours in, just doing story missions and side missions as they become available (no repeating missions to find items etc), I'm starting to feel it outstaying its welcome.
Though I haven't noticed any framerate issues at all, runs fine as far as I'm concerned.
I'm still undecided whether to buy this game or not. As a Zelda fan the cover art screams to me to buy it, but something is holding me back. Is the game any good and how is the story? Hearing bad things about that.
FYI, there was already a cutscene showcased for this DLC at Tokyo Game Show, but Nintendo Life forgot to bring it up. You can find various videos on YouTube.
@Martijn87
The game has a more simpler take on the Musou style of gameplay, focusing more on the characters rather than strategy. It's a healthy mix with the Breath of the Wild gameplay and you'll either find it repetitive or brain-dead fun.
As far as the story goes, there's a certain expectation level you have to set for it. There are a heck of a lot more cutscenes than Breath of the Wild and you feel a lot more connection to the characters. Every character had much more depth and you'll find yourself wanting to find out what happens next. However, there are certain aspects that will either make you really happy or utterly disappoint you, depending on how open you are to possibilities. One thing is for certain. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing.
@Tendogamerxxx
You can't go ignoring the examples brought up to you. How do you explain HWDE running better than AoC? A game like that should ultimately prove that it's a dev problem and not a hardware problem.
Sure, limitations are a real thing, but the developers know how far they can go. That limitation shouldn't be an issue for them of they've had years of experience.
@Rhaoulos @Ainze @Floki
Finally! People with common sense on why AoC doesn't run so well on the Switch! It's most definitely the developer's fault.
@ModdedInkling
Thanks for your response. Depth in characters and story is what I missed in breath of the wild, so that's a big plus. I think I'm just gonna buy it, see wether I like the complete story.
@Tendogamerxxx As an artist and an engineer, I disagree. Constraints are not stifling. Constraints challenge ones creativity and lead to innovation.
So what does everyone think added actions for characters mean? People are getting expanded movesets?
No frame rate fix NO BUY new crap!
@Scrubicius lmao
@Tendogamerxxx
in this case it does seem to be a dev issue since the game was made specifically for switch.
There are a lot of times where the power gap between switch and current gen causes issues and i imagine it can be hard to get certain game engines working well but in this case it does seem like a dev issue.
Can't wait! Hopefully they patch it so that it dynamically scales resolution to save the framerate when things get crazy
One of my favorite games, been excited for this update on Friday!
I LOVE this game so I'm excited to go back and play it again this Friday. I was super impressed by the first wave so I'm really excited to see what the second wave has to offer.
@JongHyun I believe so. The way its worded makes me think that they're expanding some of the characters move sets.
@Tendogamerxxx So what would you says if Nintendo had released stronger hardware, and the game still ran like crap?
Would you still continue to blame the hardware, or finally put fault on the developer?
I don't get the appeal of Dynasty Warrior games, even if it's dressed up in Zelda skin. The enemies are just standing there for you to attack, with only 1 or 2 real opponents to pose any challenge.
It's a waste of time and effort - having to cleanse these swarm of buffoons just to reach the boss.
I’m only really hyped for sooga being playable. Idk if I want to spend another $20 on this game to be honest
@NoTinderLife Honestly I didn't love the FE game and the little I played the previous Dynasty games they were too easy and boring, but this one opts for quality instead of quantity so every character feels really different instead of having tons of boring characters and the combat feels more engaging and challenging than in those games. I'm not the biggest Zelda fan (although I did love BOTW so I might still have some bias) but I do think that this game is way more enjoyable than those games. About the function of small enemies, it's mainly to interrupt your combos if you aren't paying attention and to help you gather special attack gauge for the challenging ones. It may be my imagination but I do find them more active and annoying than in previous entries.
Still, I enjoy beat'em ups and hack n' slash games like Devil May Cry so I may not be the indicated person to give advice on this one.
It's not live though!
@Scapetti It is, at least in many regions. For example, it's already live in North America.
@Tendogamerxxx Warriors games have issues on just about every console.
Seriously, we still cannot access the DLC here in the UK! Why can't they make sure the update goes live at 00:01 on the 29th?? Or at least by early that morning - instead we now have no idea when we will be able to access it. It's simple things like this where Nintendo (at least in Europe) cannot even make the most basic things available to its consumers like dlc, it really let's them down in my opinion.
I bought AoC when it was released but couldn't bring myself to buy the DLC. Frame were totally lame and the gameplay just felt like a repetitive grind-fest. I did enjoy the cinematics though and I hoped that this game would be a true canon prequel, since the devs coordinated with Nintendo's BotW team. But its obvious it was just fan fiction because the game's ending doesn't tie into the begininng of BotW.
@Ravenmaster I was surprised by the ending as I came in expecting a prequel and realised the game isn’t quite that. I finished it and then had to google and work out just what had happened in the timeline.
I would have preferred it as a straight up prequel.
I did enjoy the game but not enough for the DLC to appeal to me. And seeing as the story is more fan fiction than anything else it doesn’t pull me in wanting to know more. Playing BOTW on my OLED instead and am quite content.
As for the game not being able to cope with the hardware: def a developer issue. It’s in my view a little bit of laziness from not working with the hardware to scale it back. There are so many enemies to chop down in the game - surely they could have just reduced the number but increased their health and skill. Feels like they are sticking to a format of thousands of enemies per map but not appreciating the hardware will not cope. If I sit on a chair made for a child and I break it, it’s not the chair manufacturer’s fault!
Will there be a NintendoLife review for the DLC? I think there should, because they same substantial
Game runs fine for me. DLC purchased.
@roy130390 it wasn't available. Now it is. Your comment was a good hour after mine
@Scapetti The DLC went live for NA about 6 minutes after your comment, your point? It was already live in many regions before that and the article isn't directed to just NA people or whatever region you are in. That's why I said "for example".
@roy130390 this article said it went up at 3:45am BST. My post was at 5:54am BST. That's two hours later. You say it was up in America at 6:00am BST. It wasn't available in the UK until MUCH later still. What's YOUR point? I was just saying it's not live for me. And how the heck was I supposed to know it would be up in America 6 minutes AFTER my comment
@Scapetti My point is explained in my previous comment . It's that it covers ALL regions, meaning that even if it wasn't available on yours or mine, the DLC was still live somewhere.
Again, the article isn't just focused on your region or mine, simple as that. Also, you kinda sound triggered by what should be (and is for me) an average discussion, so I'll just clarify that there's no ill will intended.
@roy130390 so the article says it's live, and doesn't specify which regions. And I say it's not live, and I also don't specify which regions. And yet I'm wrong? Maybe think about that
@Scapetti Saying that the DLC is live is correct as long as it is in any region, which was the case. You said that it isn't live and like you said you didn't specify. Since my first reply to you, I said that it is already in some regions. I don't see what there is to think about.
@roy130390 so they say "it's live" meaning in some regions and I say "it's not live" meaning my own... what gives one meaning precedence over the other? And why are you arguing semantics with me. This isn't an "average discussion", it's pure pedantry.
@Scapetti Semantics made it wrong then, and you are the one constantly replying again despite of already clearing the subject as far as I'm aware, just because you want to be right which is what I see as pedantry. All I said in my first ccomment is that it was indeed live already in some regions and that somehow triggered you and you replied that it wasn't live on yours and that my comment was an hour after yours, which changed nothing about what I said.
What gives it precedence is that one was giving a general update which did apply while yours needed to be more specific. If this was a site that just reported on UK news I would understand, but it isn't the case.
Anyway, I think that it has already being explained so there's no point in keeping at it and it wasn't about being right or wrong to begin with, which I didn't even mention until this reply and just because you did. It simply was a matter of letting people know that it was indeed live in some regions. You are making it way too personal and as I said I have no problem with you. If you wanna have the last word be my guest.
I’d like to point out to everyone here saying the story is a fan fiction the fact that the definition of a fan fiction is something not made by or with the involvement of the original creator of a thing, just saying it’s an alternate timeline or reality is enough, I think saying fan fiction is needlessly misleading.
(Reads wall of comments shortly after playing a few of the new missions)
Whelp, I guess it's a good thing the game is still fun.
(Goes back to playing)
Now if I can drag myself back to this backlog it would be fun.
