Re: Monolith Soft Director Would "Love" Xenoblade Chronicles X On Switch, Money Stands In The Way

@DaruniaJones88 I actually like that XCX leaves you completely in the dark. The main narrative is this bizarre arc where you always think you're close to closure even as more wacky stuff happens, so it's sort of cool that the only closure the devs gave was that Mira makes zero sense. I'm afraid that a sequel, or even a brand new game set in the same universe, would wreck the mystery.

Re: Monolith Soft Director Would "Love" Xenoblade Chronicles X On Switch, Money Stands In The Way

I spent the last three weeks playing XCX and just texted a buddy that it needed a Switch port last night. Such a massive game, it's terrific! I struggled to find meaningful stuff to do after the credits rolled on XC2, but I have more hours of post game on XCX than I had on the story itself.

As far as recreating the world, it'd obviously need a lot of work. The textures are questionable even by last gen standards, and there are spots where the long draw distance is only made possible by using mega simple geometry. These all look fine at 720p and lend to some of the charm of the game, but considering how much heat XC2 got over its graphical issues, an upscaled port wouldn't fly. You'd also lose the GamePad functionality, which I'd argue is the best that the Wii U saw. The pad became a tool to help you navigate the world rather than a distraction.

This game needs to be kept alive, though. It's too big and too beautiful to let it fade into obscurity on a platform that's going to become rare in a few years. I've been surprised by how active the online community still is; I've seen more invitations for raid missions in the last three weeks than I did during the initial release.

We need this, Monolith. Take my money.

Re: Video: Nintendo Shows The Harsh Reality Of Playing Dark Souls: Remastered In New Trailer

Octorok385

@mj2k18 Dark Souls 1 has some of the best 3D level design ever published. The whole world wraps around itself beautifully, which leads to the sort of "Ah ha!" moments that you don't get from modern games. The control is actually really responsive, it's just deliberate. If you hit R to make an attack, you commit to the full time it takes to prep, swing and recover from that attack. There isn't much "Oh crap gotta dodge, time to cancel!" going on in DS (at least DS1).

I don't think it's necessarily the challenge that people like so much as the idea that the game isn't out to impress you. Everything is laid out for the player from the start, and it's up to you to do something with it.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna - The Golden Country - So Much More Than Just DLC

Octorok385

@OorWullie XC2 has a much, much stronger narrative than XCX. If you let it, it will pull you through the game at a pace that's almost too fast, which is interesting. Without spoiling anything, the narrative does a great job of creating a sense of urgency starting at about the halfway point, and I know that I was really motivated to see what happened next. The only bummer is that as a result I was about 10 levels lower than I should have been when I reached the final battle. So moral of the story is that Yes, XC2 has a much more engrossing, directive narrative than X, but also Yes, you should take time to do sidequests or extra exploring as you go.

Re: Nintendo Website Confirms Multiple Switch Games Will Not Support Cloud Saves

Octorok385

I mean, it sucks that Dark Souls won't support it, but it makes sense. The game autosaves as a basic gameplay mechanic, and being able to revert to a previous cloud save would ruin that. Same with Splatoon 2, I imagine. Rough week? Just roll back the clock. The only bummer is that if you lose your Switch, you lose your progress. Hopefully they figure out a way to set up that back up in the future.

Re: Poll: Is Your Nintendo Switch Cracking Under The Pressure?

Octorok385

@Knuckles-Fajita I have the exact same situation, and it's been that way for quite some time. That back panel is pulling away from the unit just a bit and there's a thin gap along the top of the system.

In addition, I noticed that I have little nicks on the screen from the dock. I find this a little odd since I've used the console almost exclusively in docked mode. It barely gets touched :/

I don't want to send the unit out for repair or anything, since it's out of warranty, but is there a way to pass this info on to Nintendo? I feel like they use the numbers from people calling for warranty replacements or repairs, and that's probably only a fraction of the people who actually have these things happen.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm actually pretty impressed by the Switch hardware. These little things that creep up are nothing compared to the last 2 Playstation consoles I've owned, both of which failed catastrophically. And my 360... Well, that red ring wasn't stellar, was it? But you know what works fine? My SNES. Sure that plastic turned a little green, but it fires up the first time, every time.

Re: Video: Discussing What Took Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate So Long to Come to the West

Octorok385

I thought I read that the dev team that worked on 4 and 4U shifted over to build MHW? It was clearly the main focus for the last few years, since X/XX/Gen are basically a "greatest hits" of the classic games.

I'd wait to see what comes next before we start to write off a MH5 in the classic style. Most series that make a rebranding effort as big as World's end up treating it as a complete reboot, not as a natural progression. There is still room to refine and balance the classic games, and I for one hope that both types of games continue to get produced. And as fun as World is, it was a much larger production than the previous portable entries, which means more cost and less risk taken. There's a high, high probability that World's success will ensure that future MH games are sort of vanilla, watered down versions of what MH has been in the past.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Analysis On Dark Souls: Remastered

Octorok385

I think the thing that people need to remember is that Dark Souls wasn't exactly a technical wonder when it originally released. If we're going to judge the game based on its FPS and resolution, we need the full game, and we need Blight Town.

For perspective, anyone with qualms over a "dip below 30 FPS" needs to try to play Blight Town on an XBox 360, where the framerate dips down to like, 3. If the Switch can run that area ANY better, it will be a huge improvement.

Re: Review: Quest of Dungeons (Switch eShop)

Octorok385

This is probably old news at this point, but the free demo gave me a chance to try the game and I took the plunge of the full version. As far as roguelikes go, it's scratching the itch while removing 2 of the most annoying features of the genre: There is no hunger meter, so you're free to explore as long as you want, and there are (seemingly) no unidentified items that you have to waste time testing on each run.

I've only put in about two or three hours, but I can already tell this is going to be a longtime fallback game for me.

Re: Kimishima Talks Nintendo’s 3DS Strategy Going Forward

Octorok385

If we see discounts on first party games in that library, than fine. I still don’t understand why a digital copy of many first party games are more expensive than their retail counterparts. Some first party physical releases obviously maintain their value, but come on. I’m getting less with the digital, and I’m often expected to pay more.

Re: Super Mario Land 2 Gets a Fan-Made Colour Treatment

Octorok385

That looks terrific! It’s a shame we never got this back in the GBC days. Actually, it’s a shame the virtual console never gave us Super Game Boy functionality. Would different borders and color palettes have been that tough to integrate over the years?

Maybe then black and white games would have sold more on the service... Cough cough...

Re: Super Mario Maker Updates Are Now Live

Octorok385

Hmm. I am nervous for the day all of my Mario Maker courses are lost, except on my console. I’d like to think that the servers would be maintained for a while, but as I type this I’m looking at a copy of Pokémon Black 2 that I got after online service stopped. So... Here’s hoping? Also, why isn’t Mario Maker on the Switch? I want to port my stuff over, and I want to be able to connect to the 3DS game so that it can serve as something better than a portable sketch pad.

Re: Monster Hunter XX On Switch Helps Capcom Post Impressive Growth

Octorok385

In its defense, MHXX is an excellent game. Where Gen felt a little slapped together, mostly because of some majorly inconsistent visuals, XX has been a blast to play on the big screen. The language barrier only comes into play once in a while, especially for series veterans. As it turns out, “Stab the dragon until it dies” translates pretty well to any language.

Re: Review: Pokémon Gold And Silver (3DS eShop / GBC)

Octorok385

HG/SS are excellent, but they aren't the same as the Gen 2 games. Gen 2 maintained some of the weirdness of Gen 1, especially in terms of how they applied stats (all Dark moves are Special, FTW!), and the EV system is the old variant where you were able to max EVs in all stats just by playing. I'm a huge fan of Heart Gold, don't get me wrong, but writing off the source material because it's older would be missing out on some classic game play.

Re: Review: Monster Hunter Stories (3DS)

Octorok385

I guess what I meant unclear on for Stories is how you know which attack type to pick. Are enemy attacks patterned or completely random? I don't want to play a 40 hour game based around Rock Paper Scissors, because I can play that for free. With my hands
