Re: Poll: Six Months of the Switch - What Do You Think of Nintendo's Console Hybrid?

Octorok385

It took me a second to remember what the Nintendo Switch was, but once I remembered that not everyone calls it the Breath of the Wild box, it made much more sense.

In all seriousness, I remember where the Wii U was at this point and the Switch is head and shoulders above. A huge Zelda doesn't hurt, but the indie support is really cool, and the option to import games is amazing. I just got my copy of Monster Hunter XX, so I'm looking forward to losing a few (hundred) more hours into my Joy Cons.

Re: Some Retail Nintendo Switch Games Will Require You To Own A MicroSD Card

Octorok385

I'm not terribly surprised or phased by this at all. I recently bought a small stack of 360 games, and guess what? They all required sizable downloads, which were saved to a storage device I installed specifically for that purpose. The extra step is inconvenient, to be sure, but did anyone buy a Switch without also planning on expanding that memory at some point? Even if the only thing you ever use the storage for is a collection of smaller indie titles, those gigs add up quickly.

Besides, as time goes on those flash cards are becoming cheaper and cheaper. My first home computer had 700 MB of hard drive space. My switch has 150 gigs. As long as it's easy to swap those flash cards in and out as needed, I'm not complaining.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Compares Monster Hunter XX on Switch and 3DS

Octorok385

This does seem less like a comparison and more like... A commercial? The Switch version clearly improves on virtually every aspect of the original 3DS graphics, I'm pretty sure that wasn't in question. The actual question is probably why more wasn't done. 4U still runs more smoothly than XX (at least in its demo form!), and considering a large amount of the game was areas and monsters dropped in from older generations of the game, there's a ton of opportunity to improve or re-imagine old stomping grounds.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Nintendo 3DS Games of 2017 - Summer Edition

@Zoda_Fett The GBA SP was my favorite handheld for years (like, a decade), but the N3DS just might overtake it. The size is perfect, the buttons all have the exact feel I want, and Tom is spot on with his assessment of the screen. I hadn't realized how stretched out and blurry my XL made my games look until I scaled back to the smaller model. It's fantastic playing 3DS games at the resolution they were designed for, it really is. It's the difference between playing an SNES game on an older tube television with the correct screen dimensions vs playing them stretched out on a flat screen that highlights all of the imperfections.

Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS is Discontinued Globally - An Era Ends

Octorok385

Wow, that's a shame. I recently ditched my N3DSXL for the smaller variant, and I have zero regrets. It's way lighter, has an excellent textured plate as a default and everything looks sharper thanks to the science behind not stretching out every image to make it look bigger.

I'm definitely hoping the 2DSXL holds out for a while...

Re: Review: Mega Man X2 (New 3DS / SNES)

Octorok385

I'm going to prepare my flame shield... X2 is my favorite of the X series. It replaces a lot of the enemy challenge of the original with straight platforming, which means once you've gotten a feel for the stage layouts you can blitz through the game as quickly as you can imagine. Brilliant game, one of my top five of all time.

Re: Review: Adventure Labyrinth Story (3DS eShop)

@BulbasaurusRex I did read that, I was just giving EMD as an example. I know some roguelike fans don't care for EMD because it's too easy and offers a lot of crutches. Personally, I like it better than the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series' focus on grinding until you're OP.

Re: Review: Adventure Labyrinth Story (3DS eShop)

Octorok385

@zipmon Your review basically sold me the game! I just always wonder whether the 6/10 is 6 for a rogue-like or 6 compared to other RPGs. Like, is this better than Dragon Crystal? Or Etrian MD? There should be a NintendoLife just for rogue-likes...

Re: Review: Adventure Labyrinth Story (3DS eShop)

Octorok385

Just as a thought, a lot of rogue-likes (including Etrian Mystery Dungeon, one of my favorite games, as well as the Pokemon variant) get middle of the road reviews. Have any rogue-like fans played this game yet? Also how much is this bad boy, I might take the plunge if no one else will.

Re: Video: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Has Neat Glitches, Including Tricks to Clear it in 10 Minutes

There's an even better glitch at the end of the first dungeon in the original release. If you fall down the pit in the Moldorm's boss room and use the Roc's Feather and press Up just as you enter the 2D room underneath, you'll get a boost upwards and through the ceiling. This puts you in a giant debugging map where you can (Carefully!) access any dungeon in the game. This lets you get the Power Bracelet, Flippers, Level 2 bracelet and several other items immediately!
