A little before the release of Monster Hunter Rise I looked up a few weapon tier lists, not to influence my choice of starter weapon but to affirm my choice. At that point, the lists were based off demo impressions, and it was ugly reading. The Insect Glaive was considered to be 'nerfed', and was sitting at the uncool table with the Lance and Sword & Shield.
To my pleasure updated tier lists are a little kinder; it's now mid-tier by some reckonings. I'll take it. For me, though, it's now the only weapon I truly love in Monster Hunter, so figured I'd share why it's the best — and most fun — weapon in the game.
The Insect Glaive made its debut in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate for those of us outside Japan (in Capcom's homeland it was in the original MH4), and at the time it was both unique and important. That title brought mounting into the equation, and for other weapons that meant hoping the monster would kindly stand below an elevated platform while you jumped down and attacked. The Glaive, though, allowed you to vault and propel yourself around the area and get aerial attacks in at will. In a team of four, that certainly made the Insect Glaive player a very useful hunter.
What got me hooked on it, along with many others no doubt, was the mobility. As a hunter that opts to dodge rather than block or counter, it made life far easier and more thrilling to boot. There's also fascinating — and potentially bewildering — depth too, as you grind not only to forge new weapons, but varied types and their Kinsects.
For those starting to get confused, a Kinsect is a cool little brightly coloured bug buddy that nestles on your arm — in a not-actually-creepy way. Capcom, wisely, has simplified the Kinsect element in Rise, although some purists preferred the greater flexibility. As you upgrade your weapon you also need to get higher level Kinsects, which become more powerful, faster and have different effects. By late game you'll likely have multiple Glaives and Kinsects on the go, picking the right one for each hunt in the same way you choose which shoes to wear on a day out.
The Kinsect is hugely useful in battles; early on it can be tricky to figure out, but with practice is actually instinctive. You want to gather three elements / 'essence' with the Kinsect, and you do this by launching it at a monster, then recalling it once it's made a hit; each hit does decent damage, too. Pretty quickly you figure out which element is 'harvested' from which part of the body, and once you have all three your weapon becomes a whirling blade of death as your attacks are quicker and more powerful. My favoured way to start a fight is a jumping attack off my Palamute and a Kinsect charge to the face; a good way to say hello.
I'm still in early game, close to finishing 4 star in the single player section, so I'm currently using the rather boring Steel Glaive because, unlike some of the other early iterations, it has a decent 'green' bar for sharpness. Nevertheless I'm enjoying the window shopping as more variations appear in the upgrade tree, and some of them look terrific. The designs have always been fun with the Glaives and Kinsects.
Of course the big addition to Rise is also the thing that has many questioning the value of the Insect Glaive — the Wirebug. Mounting and then riding / wrangling monsters like a demented cowboy is integral, and the door is open for every weapon to do this effectively. It's a welcome design choice, not just for hunts but in the fantastic verticality and exploration opportunities it opens up. For Glaive fans, though, it takes away a key selling point of the weapon; yet I'd argue that's not quite accurate.
For one thing, there are limits to Wirebug uses; they recharge quickly, but it's still a factor. For me, the Wirebug moveset for the Insect Glaive has also made it even better, not weaker. One hugely useful move is 'ZL'+'A' — get close-ish to the monster with your weapon drawn and this will apply wire, propel you backwards to safety and, after a couple of seconds, provide a decent chunk of health. So if you take a couple of hits and are counterattacking anyway, it's a great option. 'ZL'+'X' gives you a huge leap forward for attacks, so if you've created some range it's an ideal way to dive into the fray and get closer to binding that beast. On top of that you can do some nice aerial combos to propel yourself in multiple directions, to either avoid trouble or react to a monster's movement.
The Wirebug combined with an Insect Glaive makes you more agile than ever before, and the default Glaive vault is still a great way to hop out of danger while looking like a heavily armoured Spider-Man.
With the arrival of the Wirebug I'm well aware that, when used skilfully, many more powerful weapons will be just as effective for dodging and getting around a map. Yet still, my loyalty to the Insect Glaive — and a time-restricted lack of will to 'master' another weapon — lives on. It's just a cool, silly thing of a weapon, and cool silliness is pretty much what Monster Hunter is all about.

I thought it was clarified that only in the DEMO Insect Glaive seemed weak and that was because it was missing features. In the game IG is very good and just as versatile as before.
Hammer is the only weapon for me. I might call my character Timmy Mallett.
That's good, it is my weapon of choice as well! Makes me more exited to pick it up in a few months.
You guys really like Monster Hunter Rise.
Charge Blade was my favorite since it was introduced in MH4, but as the Insect Glaive's Kinsect got less complicated while the Glaive itself retained and improved its mobility features, it became my go-to weapon. Combined with the wirebug, it just feels amazing to be able to put yourself wherever you want by soaring through the air. I mess around with practically everything (except boring old Lance) but when I want to hunt confidently, it's the Glaive for me.
@Dualmask Yeah, I really liked the Charge Blade in MH4 but soon after, changed to hammer and never looked back. I do think there are quite a few changes to certain weapons in this game though, vials charge easier with Charge Blade and Hunting Horn notes play automatically.
Good news, every weapon is still great in Rise! Greatsword and SnS for me 😎 ...maybe a little Switch Axe or Gunlance if I'm feeling saucy 😏
@Northwind It's mostly because each person prefers different weapon styles. I prefer the dual blades, mainly due to the fact that I enjoy the faster playstyle. Some people prefer the Great Sword, since they rather have more power in sacrifice of speed.
@Northwind Yes, consensus doesn't happen in the MH community
@nessisonett Hammer was literally the first weapon I ever used in MH history. Loved charging it while Rathalos would land in front of me...normally you'd get pushed back by wind pressure but while charging with Hammer, it didn't affect you, so it was a great time to lay the smack down and KO the beast. But then I got bored with it and left Hammer behind for a long time... I picked it up again World and Rise and saw it's really a lot of fun too.
If Capcom really wants to modernize things though, stop forcing us to sharpen the Hammer...LOL.
Maybe I'm just boring but personally I'm really not a big fan of the more "wacky" weapons.
Basic **** Sword & Shield, Lance & Bow all the way.
@Dualmask Yeah, having to sit and sharpen a hammer just makes you look like a crazy person. Fair enough if you could get ones covered in blades that would do half slash and half blunt but at the minute it seems very silly.
I’ve rolled the credits on the village quests now, almost all of which I did with the dual blades. This is my first Monater Hunter (at least first that’s stuck) and I really appreciate the speed on the dual blades. I tried the two swords but they’re too slow for me. I’d love to try out some of these wackier weapons once I feel more comfortable with the game. I watched an “every weapon in one minute” video last night and the variety is astounding.
All the way. Started my first MH (being 4 Ultimate) with the Dual Blades, but soon enough the Insect Glaive won me over, and it still does.
Though I don't really use 'ZL + A' as much as I should. Instead (given I have the red extract), I make it a habit to 'ZR + B' to vault and then 'A' to summersault right towards my target like a madman. Then I get launched up and 'A' again and again until my stamina drains or I touch ground. Brilliant stuff.
I'm a gunner for life. It feels good returning to LBG ever since I left it on 2ndFU. I had favored bows until the dreaded Demo.
I'm seeing everyone mentioning the demo wasn't conclusive on the weapons' final power, so I guess I should give it a try on the full game again.
On topic: my bro is a monster with Insect Glaive ever since 4U
I go back and forth between insect glaive and hunting horn depending on how I’m feeling. It could just be me but the insect glaive in Rise feels slower or clunkier vs World. I only really played World and that has a bit of a different feel all over.
Edit: auto correct does not like the word glaive. (One got changed to glance the other changes to flavor)
It was Bow for me right through World and Icebourne but I wasn't feeling it in Rise so have swapped to Long Sword and having fun.
I was in a hunt earlier against Magnamalo and the other 3 hunters all had Insect Glaive - it was insane, you couldn't see what was going on but that beast dropped fast.
I been a switch axe main since 3U.
But I been meaning to try bow this iteration of mh cause of the gyro controls.
I'm all about the Hunting Horn this time. They really streamlined that weapon and made it fun to use. Can't say no to a hammer that you can use to buff yourself.
For me I rotate between Hunting Horn as love the rotation and brute force weapon, and dual blades as the speed is fun as well as its skin application reminding me of a rage meter.
Author, when you get the opportunity, try out the skill "Evade extender" with insect glaive. It is absolutely the funnest thing ever, as it affects all of your aerials.
I'm an exclusive user of Insect Glaive but this is my first Monster Hunter game. Because of the vault it lets me be far more evasive than I could be even with wire bugs alone; that's why IG can't guard, don't need it. Because of the "double-jump" mechanic: vault-jump-wire-jump-wire-jump-wire-jump-attack covers insane horizontal distance.
I just like the moveset and the mobility. I don't care if it's not god tier, it's been working well so far. And I just upgraded to the 2nd to last glaive in the Zinogre line and can wipe the floor with Magnamalo in < 10 mins. <3
Hold on... we can counter!?!?
Yup. I tried every weapon extensively and this is what I landed on. I’m a first time MH addict, after many previous MH attempts throughout the years. Rise finally hooked me. I’m a big Bayonetta fan and I found that I needed something that gives me a “similar” play style, allows me to get out of my own way and look cool af when doing it. Thus, the Glaive. It has its quirks, but once you figure it out... it’s over.
You can keep your flight, I'll be a spider monkey with a switch axe.
I finished the game (village and hub) over the weekend, I used Insect Glaive straight through. It was a blast! I was underwhelmed by the main silkbind attack, but when you get a monster with the right elevation, it's time for a one way ticket to blender town!
@nessisonett
I'm a hammer guy, too!
I used the Glaive when it first debuted but since then I felt like it kept getting worse and worse. I'm not entirely sold on the fact this isn't the case with Rise either, so I've been sticking to Longswords and sometimes switch out to the Greatsword, which was my original main weapon before I switched to the Longsword.
Tier lists are very, very overrated.
You will ALWAYS do better with what you enjoy and are comfortable with in a game like this.
I'm a HH and CB main in the old world. But in the demo, my obsession was the LBG. After launch it was the DB and the GS. Now this week it's been the IG. I didn't really have an opportunity to fully take my time in World, so I've been loving the training room in Rise. Between that and a very useful and concise video breaking down all the weapons, I'm hoping to give all the weapons a shot at some point. I'm having a blast fighting the same monsters, just with different weapons
IG is easy mode though
@Ashunera84 As an old world Hunting Horn player and a Smash Zelda main, I agree wholeheartedly.
There's an advantage to playing the rarer character/weapon, no one knows the crazy junk you can pull off
Back in world this was my very first weapon I main'd and It lasted all the way up to the endgame and I switch to my amazing long sword.
I love the mobilty of Glaive but I really dislike the insect part. I've played all the way through MH:W with just the IG but now I'm considering switching to something that doesn't have to farm essensces every minute.
The Insect Glaive is always crappy when it comes to demos, mainly because they give you a slow Kinsect.
I tried Insect Glavie in previous MH games before, but somehow it didn't click, I may be doing something wrong. Good thing that I can always pick my great sword, and now I love it even more with the mobility I have in this game.
I’ve been switching between bow and the light bow gun. I like speed and keeping my distance. This is my first MH game and it’s ***** fun. Due to uni stealing my time I don’t think I’m even to 2 Star yet.
I been maining the IG since 4U and i agree its still good as ever, love the new Switch Skills and with the Wirebug you have more freedom then ever with movement. Also its so good seeing great weapon designs back, the IG didn't many great designs in World/Iceborne but with Rise its back to how it was.
im pretty new to the series, i picked up the insect glaive randomly and its so fun jumping around. its a nice sense of freedom
This all seems so intimidating to someone who didn’t try MH before 😂
Working with Heavy Bowgun to get a better mastery of a ranged weapon. I will get back to my Charge Blades and maybe Lance's later. Insect Glaive was one I toyed with in 4U but my brother played it so there wasn't much point for me to use it.
I am planning on messing around with Hunting Horn, Insect Glaive, and Gunlance later to get better diversity in my weapons
@thomasBW84 THANK YOU! You've converted me to this weapon, and I'm having, without a doubt, THE most fun I've EVER had in Monster Hunter! MHRise definitely is onto something good with Wirebugs, and they make all gameplay amazing and cool, but this very article made me try the Insect Glaive for the first time, and I'll never look back. "The ground is LAVA" Forever!
I started out with the Light Bowgun to try something different for a change, but I’m definitely back to the good ol’ Hammer now. It’s just so much fun wacking and stunning monsters around. The wirebug makes it a lot more easy to be more agile and I LOVE that fully charged meteor smash silkbind attack. Never used the ‘purple charge’ mode though and can’t even imagine it’s any better than the normal mode for all I’ve seen. Makes me sad to see so little hammer users here and online too. Do you guys see it as a boring / cheating weapon or is it just not as good as I believe it to be?
