Kitfox Games has revealed that it is bringing its dating sim/dungeon crawler mashup Boyfriend Dungeon to the Nintendo Switch next year.
Set in a world where boyfriends can also transform into powerful weapons, you'll need to find the perfect date in order to conquer the game's monster-filled levels. If you succeed in capturing their hearts, then they will level-up and become even more powerful in battle.
Developed "in coordination with dating-dungeon fans", Boyfriend Dungeon seems like the perfect counterpoint to Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon, if you ask us. Let us know if you'll be giving it a spin in 2020.

This kinda reminds me of that anime where folks used each other as weapons. Can't remember what it was called. I remember the Grim reaper was part of it.
there are way too many waifu games on the Nintendo Switch.
it's nice to see something (in addition to Dream Daddy) for those who prefer husbandos.
(that HD rumble tho 👀)
@Kalmaro
Soul Eater?
That one was pretty good.
@Hero8-Bit That's it! Thanks.
@Kalmaro I believe you're thinking about Soul Eater.
I love the anime, and the opening kicks so much ass!
Cool. Seems like an alternative to the “pickup girls in a dungeon game”. Not a fan of the genre (not like they make lesbian versions of these) but always happy to see attempts to equal it out.
Besides, it's taking Xenoblade 2 and all of its back lore to its logical conclusion. LOL.
This looks pretty awesome actually. I'll keep my eye on it.
Oof, probably should have stuck with pixel art work. That animation is jaaankeeee.
Nice, I’ve had my eye on this one for a while. Got the right level of tongue-in-cheek.
Male Valkyrie Drive, eh?
Might be good for a laugh.
So Ghirahim and Demise...
@CharlieGirl Yeah, let's counteract stupid with stupid. Good idea.
So... It's Soul Eater?
Looks pretty sweet yea this really has Soul Eater vibes
Let the pandering COMMENCE
@Jayofmaya - If there is a market for it.
I know of one company that made a killing on a theme of jumping in a game. Sounds silly I know.
The combat scenes they showed looked very fun.
I'm moderately interested.
@Ryu_Niiyama very witty
I have a feeling Anti-Matter would love this...
...if it wasn't 16/M-rated filth!
@Jayofmaya thanks! I thought it was a good idea too
@CharlieGirl I'm glad everyone is getting something more but alas if you're a lesbian than neither offerings are great. I don't tend to like dating sims but I wouldn't mind something with more gameplay and action in the mix.
@Ryu_Niiyama A lesbian version I would play! Not many lesbian dating scenerios in games with dating opitions on the Switch. Timespinners has one though if you complete the missions. Iconoclasts is another indie game with a lesbian couple in the cast but not the main character.
oh, believe me, @Kirby_Girl. I'm a lesbian and I totally get it.
I'm tired of our equivalent games being low-budget mobile apps filled with outdated tropes.
The idea reminded me of Oninaki and other games with anime girl weapons. Seeing one with dreamy bishonen is nothing unusual. Surprised the main character isn't a submissive, girly male.
Gameplay looks solid too.
@CharlieGirl YA, there's not many opportunities in this genre for us but I wouldn't mind playing one if it existed more. I just don't see myself getting into dating games like this or Dream Daddy one cause that's just not what I'm into lol. Still other ladies like it. It's good for them. They can enjoy. The ones with "waifus" creep me out and I know they are made for guys and not me. Often times you can't change your own gender so ya. Made for certain main audiences in mind. Oh well. Someday I'll see something and maybe check it out for fun.
@Kirby_Girl oh gosh, the creep factor of waifu games is just astronomically high. they aren't made for people that respect women as human beings.
I'm glad that games like Dream Daddy and Boyfriend Dungeon exist, for the people that like bois. But I wonder when players like you and I will be legitimized in the gaming space :/
@CharlieGirl This game is still in development but it's the only one that actually has a protag. It's not a dating sim tho. https://store.steampowered.com/app/938860/Get_In_The_Car_Loser/
It's all I can think of lol. Someday maybe...
Art style looks great; premise gave me a chuckle; combat appears solid; the name is hilarious; surprised to admit a dating sim is on my radar.
hope the weapons are randomized or customizable, need them to be MY weapon, not passing the same lines to everyone they meet!
@Kirby_Girl thinking about getting a computer just to play that game!
thank you for the recommendation!
I thought this would be weird by the description, but damn this actually looks cool
This article really sells the game short. As a Kickstarter backer, and someone who's been following this since the beginning, it's actually about more than just "boyfriends".
It does lean more towards male love interests (with 4 of them) but there's still 2 female love interests and 2 non-binary love interests.
The main character can also be male, female or non-binary.
@CharlieGirl The name seems to be throwing people (including the people who wrote the article), but Boyfriend Dungeon DOES have female (and non-binary) love interests, and you choose the player character's gender.
It has 4 male love interests, 2 female love interests and 2 non-binary love interests, so yeah, it's weighted a little towards the "boyfriends", but by no means is it exclusively about them.
@Ralizah lmao at the Valkyrie drive reference! To my great shame I do have the vita game and the anime. They are terrible as they are designed for the male viewer (lady lady alone makes my back ache just looking at them) but when you have very little options, sometimes you cringe through the crap.
@Kirby_Girl Yeah, The gaming industry still has the assumption that either lesbians don’t exist really or are men with a uterus. lesbian characters written for the male gaze are usually creepy due to the fact that it is often forgotten that women are people first, varied and often well rounded.
If you create stories where the characters are one note, not written either by a writer that can understand or at least one that respects a demographic and with the intent to exploit the demographic you are depicting it’s usually a cringe fest all around. I’m not expecting high level writing from a game but I swear it would be nice to have some decent representation. I’ve gotten to the point that I avoid games with romance subplots or ignore them because I’m bored viewing plots for everyone else.
Oh well maybe someday.
@FlorenceKitten well at first you had my interest. now you have my attention 😏
@Kirby_Girl That game looks really fun. Like the concept and personality of the art style.
@Ryu_Niiyama I liked the VD Vita game well enough, as the T&A was pretty toned down and the game had an often bizarre sense of humor (Manpukumaru was hilarious; she's obsessed with food and the act of consumption to the point where the closest she can come to showing genuine human affection is expressing a desire to literally devour the other girls she likes). The anime was... well, it was porn. Very softcore porn, but pornography nonetheless. And pretty boring once this realization sets in. Although the ending song is still pretty catchy.
Both are trashy and designed with male fetishes in mind, of course. Everything Kenichiro Takaki made at Marvelous was trash. And he gleefully embraced this like the teenage-boy-in-a-man's-body that he was.
Out of interest, have you played VA-11 Hall-A? I really appreciated that game's more thoughtful treatment of sexual themes, hetero and otherwise.
@Ralizah nope, haven’t played that one. The bar setting was off putting as I don’t drink. In the sense that it would be like playing a game set in the DMV to me. (I have no issues with others who drink so long as they don’t harass me for choosing not to. Alcohol doesn’t agree with me and the concept of drinking is not one that I comprehend.)
Still, I wouldn’t have guessed a series about being a lawyer would be one of my favorites (huge ace Attorney fan here) so I may give it a go. However, I went way overboard on Black Friday so it will be a while.
Lol! ...This is patently ridiculous.
Of course, this is a Day 1 purchase for sure!
@Ryu_Niiyama I don't drink, either. It's not really about alcohol or bar culture, though. The bar setting allows you (via Jill the bartender) to get to know a cast of interesting, complicated, and usually non-heterosexual characters as they attempt to thrive and/or survive in a hyper-capitalist cyberpunk dystopia.
Also, like Ace Attorney, it's frequently laugh-out-loud funny.
I managed to mostly reign in my spending this year. Although my goal of never having a Switch backlog is officially caput.
@Ryu_Niiyama Yeah, see what you said about exploiting certain audiences is what is going to happen and I think it's obvious. For me, I have never really played a game that has focus on an attraction based relationship. I recall playing San Andreas when I was young but totally ignored the side quest for relationships. Isn't it annoying enough that Hollywood insists you can't be happy without being attached to another human you also find aesthetically pleasing? I don't doubt I'm in the minority with so many years of media and even human history working against my ideals, but it's not love to me and never will be.
@Ralizah yeah I gave up that fight year one of owing a Switch. However after it took two days to redownload my games I need to actually sit down and beat something.
I’ll put the game on my list but I am pretty jaded at this point. Still I’ll keep an open mind.
Thank Hylia fighting games are my favorite genre.
@CharlieGirl You guys should try the Mass Effect series or Dragon Age.
I'm as straight guy, but there are a few gay romance options in those games that are decently written..at least compared to the straight options.
I will stick with the upcoming Danmachi game.
