2019 has been a pretty great year for Nintendo fans, with lots of wonderful games to keep us busy and even a shiny new console to get excited about. The team here at Nintendo Life is currently hard at work putting together some end-of-year celebration content for you lovely readers (you can already start voting for your Nintendo Game of the Decade), but before that, Nintendo itself is getting in on the act.
Nintendo of America has posted a short video showing off some of this year's Nintendo Switch Online highlights, asking fans to share their favourite online memories of the year. Considering the divisive nature of Switch Online's overall worth and quality, it seems like quite an odd topic to bring up, but here it is regardless:
As you can see, it provides several examples such as the retro game library growing to 74 games in total, the addition of SNES games, Pokémon Sword and Shield's online functionalities, the launch of Tetris 99, online course sharing in Super Mario Maker 2, and more.
But what about you? What have you liked the most about Nintendo Switch Online over the past 12 months? Are you happy with the content you receive for your money? Share all of your thoughts with us below.

Replaying Zelda II, Startropics, and Super Metroid for the first time in forever.
Playing Smash with my brother who lives eight hours away, after having an almost entirely solo experience with Smash Wii U.
Is this some sort of joke??
Mine was reading all the crying in here.
Playing Smash with friends, showing off all of the stupid stages we found on Shared Content
Tetris 99 when it first launched was a blast. I also played an obscene amount of Tecmo Bowl against my wee brother which definitely holds up today.
Well, I've put over 100 hours into Tetris 99 this year...so, yeah I'd say I got my money's worth
Although bittersweet, probably my favourite memory was the Final Splatfest in Splatoon 2 because of the amount of cool stuff happening at the time, like the reintroduction of Splatoon 1 music and the special shifty stage...
I wish more Splatfests were happening... Roll on Splatoon 3.
Nintendo Online as a whole though is still shoddy as far as I am concerned; I don't care that it is cheap, I care that there was no noticeable improvement in online performance when introduced.
@Alztru I just came in here to post the same thing. Are they looking to incite a social media sh*tstorm?
Switch Online has been an unequivocal failure.
Oh yeah, Swtich Online, what a magnificent thing. I remember when I tried to play Smash Ultimate with my brother by my side and some friends online. I remember how WE COULDN´T play both on the same console (when in the WiiU it was possible...), and playing with my friends was terrible because of the lag. And suppossedly it works better than in WiiU, now that it cost money eh?
Last time I play that game online. Fortunately it was the trial period and I didn´t pay for it. I´d better keep playing that game only local...
Not good memories with Switch Online, as you can see XD
@nessisonett Absolutely. I was addicted to that one for a while on NSO. The halftime “show” always good for a laugh too.
Tecmo Super Bowl is the better of two, but won’t be released due to licensing issues.
@MS7000 Splatfests were magical experiences, and managed to give an entirely unique feel to an already incredibly unique game
I'll miss them, even if I only won like, 4 of them
They want us to share memories, but I'm guessing anything involving copyrighted material will be swiftly C&D'd in classic Nintendo fashion? :-/
NES and Super Nintendo apps have been fun. Please add more content.
This is going to be fun.
I've still yet to play Tetris 99. I downloaded it, but I don't know if I'll ever get around to trying it out. I'm not a huge Tetris fan. It was a mediocre game at best when it launched on Gameboy. Fun in very short spurts, but it couldn't hold my attention for very long.
@ToonStuff Even at times when I was tired of Splatoon, the Splatfests would always draw me in. I remember having a very long losing streak at the Splatfests, but I think I evened it out by the time the Final Splatfest came around (I lost the last one, damn anarchists).
Not happy with the service at all. Locking the classic games behind a rental paywall when the VC service while not the best in the world at least allowed you to play the games indefinitely and curate your own collection.
When they announced achievements was coming to the games' system and it's integral part to the Switch Online function. Hurray!
Well to sum it all up I've been playing my playstation to fill the online void. Take this comment what ever way you want.
Playing Splatoon 2 with my son was a lot of fun. However, let's be honest, Nintendo online is not very good, they couldn't even get voice chat correct.
I love me some Splatoon 2 Ranked Mode.

Not needing NO to play Gems of War, which has a faux player-vs-player online component and in game chat.
Tetris 99 was certainly the best thing it had going for it though, new twist on an old game that drew people in and got them addicted. There are probably people who got their $20 worth just on that.
@MS7000 Exactly
Banjo-Kazooie and Terry.
Getting the Fire Emblem theme in Tetris 99 and a bunch of JRPGs (plus a few other titles that had been on my 3DS Virtual Console wishlist for ages) in CGC. The latter also marked me finally moving from the NES flagships in Mario franchise to the 16 bit chapter.
Ironically, I don't usually play online in the titles I have that actually charge the NSO subscription to do so.
I swear some time ago I read on this website a comment according to which people complaining about NSO were a minority.
LOL... 49%?
When I accidentally let it lapse and realized there was no reason to renew.
For me it is easily Tetris 99, I didn't think I would get into it at first, I hated the game when it was online-only, but once I got into it and brushed up on my Tetris skills I noticed how I was really enjoying myself. I never won a match, but I've been able to get close to the top 10 when I am doing well. It has definitely made me a better Tetris player.
With the addition of the SNES Games and Tetris it’s got a lot better this year. Not an amazing service by any means though.
Getting constant Splatoon 2 disconnects, and then getting banned for it.
Getting SNES games was definitely the highlight for me!
Cadence was the best surprise since it can open the gates for more True "Nindies"
I won't be renewing. I know it's only €20 a year, but that's just not the point anymore.
I have my NES and SNES mini for those games.
Tough words coming from a company who doesn't want us to buy old games individually. Screw that.
Service is a joke. Start another online service. A GOOD ONE.
A communication error has occurred.
The time you sent my SNES controller to me to have a two week holiday in Oldham, before sending it back to Germany and telling me that it is no longer in stock. Erm you do have stock, MY CONTROLLER
@Alztru Exactly what I was thinking
Forgot that I subscribed to be honest.
Tetris 99. That's it. I love Splatoon, but I never seem to play it anymore.
Playing Smash Bros online. Also playing Capcom Beat em Up Bundle with my brother.
My favourite moment: when my membership lapsed...
Final Splatfest was probably my number 1.
It could have potentially been "playing NES games from our childhood with my little sister who lives in another state" except the lag kind of killed it.
The addition of SNES games are the highlight for me, but cloud saves are pretty huge too. I can now play (most) of my games in peace knowing I can't easily lose my save data.
The final Splatfest for me, really miss them and it's the reason I got a Switch sooner rather than later. SNES games are great too but need some time to play them.
The NES and SNES apps are pretty atrocious, but even if they weren't they couldn't compete with Tetris 99 for me!
There was that one time where I-....
...How about when-...
...
Yeah I got nothing.
Several people, myself included, spamming "Booyah!" during several matches on the final day of Splatocalypse regardless of whether we were winning or losing. We were simply celebrating the awesomeness that are Splatfests and I sincerely miss them. Bring on Splatoon 3.
I'd say either snes games or playing other makers courses in Mario Maker.
Getting the SNES controllers was great, sadly badly handled by Nintendo (limited stock problems as usual)
I'd like Nintendo to really look after the online service next year and treat us to games more often, maybe DS could join it next year would be cool.
I loved Tetris for a hot minute and had a blast with Mario Kart online. Otherwise I dipped into and pretty much straight out
The nes stuff.
Finally being able to beat Star Fox(all three paths) was worth the $20 alone. I've owned the SNES cart since it came out originally, but the game is so unforgiving and never mustered the patience to beat it. Not to mention the slew of NES and SNES you get, which I don't even have time for!
I dunno, for $20 a year it's worth it. At least it's not something like Sony's doing and charging $30 for a back button for the DS4. 🙄
Online... apart from nes/snes .. nothing, I do not play mp, but with switch... any moment is superb. I chose it over xbx and ps4 and I could not do better.
@WiltonRoots,
As fun has that has been, I liked getting the classic SNES games added to the online service, nah who am I kidding, the moaners win every time.
@johnvboy Well aside from the crying (which I have enjoyed even though there's nothing anyone in here can do about their woes apart from read them), the SNES has been a great addition, Super Ghouls n Ghosts, Zelda and F-Zero in particular have been the games I've spent the most time on so far. I'm sure I'll get stuck into them a bit more over the coming week or so.
Who knew Super Kirby Clash would be one of my most played games in 2019? Not me. 40 hours and 1600 gold coins later, still enjoying my time.
Hey kids, which part of the absolute minimal effort is keeping you subbed?
I'm slowly improving my completion time in Super Metroid.
Obviously the answer has to be online Pokemon Sword and Shield battles.
My favourite memory was when it wasn’t terrible, Oh wait! Nevermind
i was able to play a game online with my friends. Once.
That time when my little brother almost strangled himself in all the wires trying to chat.
I had this awesome dream that they updated the OS to allow new themes, folders, and general QOL improvements. That dream was my favorite part.
My favorite part was not paying for the online this year by having Twitch Prime. FeelsGoodMan
I played splatoon a few times and mario Kart but the connection kept kicking me off. Monster Hunter wasn't quite as bad for connectivity but I got bored of the game. I generally play single player or local multiplayer games anyway. The old roms were ok for 5 minutes. I might not resubscribe because I am not using it. Ps4 games have better connections, so I might just pay for that.
The RE5 and RE6 ports.
I spent hours and HOURS on The Mercenaries mode on both games. And to be able to play then on the John is a godsend.
@WiltonRoots,
I must confess that Super Soccer was always a favorite of mine, those stereotypical German players names like klaus Rudi and Otto get me every time.
my favourite is when it became free again......oh wait!
don't have any because the Switch Online is terrible
I truly cherish the 5 or 6 minutes total I've played it...
Let's see...
I like Warframe, Dauntless and Diablo 3. Yeah, that's probably it.
Wish we had more emulators like hackers have.
my favorite memory of online switch, is when it was free.
