Nintendo and Pokémon GO creator Niantic have announced a new partnership, which will see the two companies create a "series of apps" together.
The first title they'll be developing is based on the Pikmin franchise. According to the official PR, these apps will combine Niantic's real-world AR tech with Nintendo's beloved characters.
The app is scheduled to launch "globally" later this year, with Niantic as the publisher. The name and other details will be shared in the future. This will also be the first game released by Niantic Tokyo Studio, which was originally established in 2018.
Here's what Shigeru Miyamoto himself had to say about the partnership:
“Niantic’s AR technology has made it possible for us to experience the world as if Pikmin are secretly living all around us. Based on the theme of making walking fun, our mission is to provide people a new experience that’s different from traditional games. We hope that the Pikmin and this app will become a partner in your life.”
Niantic's CEO John Hanke also shared some words, noting how the partnership was the natural next step:
“As we continue to expand our games portfolio, it was a natural next step to team up with Nintendo. We’re looking forward to shaping the future of AR together, bringing Nintendo’s beloved game characters to life for mobile game players around the world.”
If you would like to experience this app yourself, you can pre-register now on Niantic's official website.

i'm interested of checking this out. if my android supports it.
They should call this Pikmin GO just for the mass market to confuse this with Pokemon GO lol
Finally, the Pikmin 4 we've been waiting for
This must be that Pikmin game Miyamoto was talking about. It’s finally almost finished!
Welp, there goes the Pikmin franchise.
@Kimyonaakuma you beat me to it.
I didn’t think Hey Pikmin could be topped in terms of sheer ‘what were they thinking’ levels. I might be wrong.
I wish they’d spend more time fixing Pokémon Go instead
This sounds cool. Especially since Pikmin is a post apocalyptic earth anyway. It will be neat to see them interact with things. Just hope it doesn’t illuminate how much we litter and disrespect our little blue marble.
No thanks.
My handphone is NOT for gaming.
I don't understand how you could translate Pikmin into a Pokemon Go-like experience at all. Pokemon Go has evolved into a pretty solid and fun game. But it's taken Niantic years of updates and changes to get there and it still has some problems.
If a Pikmin game takes even a fraction of that time to get going, I don't see it taking off at all.
As long as it's not Pikmin 4 coming to mobile I'm okay with it. No main line games of any kind should ever be made for phones, hear that Capcom (you BrEAth of Fire 6 killer).
Sounds like it could be interesting
This will probably just let you take photos of Pikmin with real world objects. Kinda like the AR cards that came with the 3DS.
Not the Pikmin game wanted but also not the Pikmin game we needed.
I am actually looking forward for this, but it’s been so long since Pikmin 3 first came out...
I really hope this goes the Mario run route, and is a one time purchase. In Mario kart tour, the micro transactions were ridiculous and it was impossible to get any slightly interesting kart without paying ludicrous sums of money. Nintendo seems to be getting more and more ambitious with their in app purchases, and I hope that doesn’t carry over to this game.
Sounds like it has potential to be a fun little timekiller/novelty. Just hope it doesn't get greedy with microtransactions like Nintendo's other mobile games have been doing recently.
It's Pikmin ANYTHING
So I'm happy
It could be interesting, it won't be anywhere near as popular as Pokemon Go. Having said that though, I would definitely check it out, once it's released.
I remember when Pokemon Go was first shown off at E3, and Miyamoto was there for the presentation. I always found that to be a weird choice, but with a Pikmin game, that makes a little more sense.
I’m very interested!
Nintendo should acquire (or at least invest heavily in) Niantic
Nintendo need a phone game developer
Wonder how this game will work when people won't be able to go out on walks still.
It's a cute RTS game where you collect little guys and use them to solve puzzles in a charmingly scaled down world. It's fun! It works! They could make more!
But Nintendo seems committed to just doing bizarre and ill-advised things with the franchise.
@MasterJay A one time payment for a full AR game with a proper story and fun gameplay with unique mechanics, would be more interesting then a game as a service. I don’t think Pikimin, as a brand and mainstream appeal, has the staying power to retain a lot of players. Regardless, I look forward to what they come up with.
I do enjoy Pokemon Go, so I'm interested in seeing what they do with it.
On the other hand, from a practicality standpoint, I'm not sure I could do 2 games of this type.
Pokemon Go is the only Nintendo-related mobile game that has been wildly successful to the point where it massively boosted the sales and awareness of Pokemon across the world.
It doesn't seem like this mobile app is much of a game but rather a piece of QoL software, so I doubt it will be monetized much if at all. Therefore, I think it exists solely to raise awareness for the Pikmin IP. If this app is appealing enough and gets a decent amount of downloads and engagement, it could provide a big boost to the Pikmin brand.
@sketchturner Thank you! One other person in this comments section that’s happy.
To me this game is a symbol that Nintendo is acknowledging and attempting to spread the appeal of their most underdogged franchise. Heck, this game could just be a seed to spread awareness before the next full game 🤩
Looks like ol' Satan's at it again. He really needs one of these schemes to work, or people are just going to write him off.
@rjejr

I feel like this game is going to be shut down a year later due to its popularity, its deffinetely going to use the same concept as a pokemon go so i dont think this game won’t be so much fun
Nintendo really wants to push Pikmin as one of their major series. I really wish DKC and Metroid would get the same amount of love from them.
A while back Nintendo did say their mobile releases would supplement their home console counterparts. I know Pikmin 3 Deluxe exists, but I think this is pretty good evidence that Pikmin 4 is definitely coming in the next year or two.
But hey, who knows. I couldn't care less about mobile games but I hope it does well for the sake of getting Pikmin to be a more popular and known franchise.
@RareFan I'm glad Nintendo is deciding to push Pikmin but I do agree. Metroid and Donkey Kong need some love. The past two Donkey Kong Country games were two of the best 2D platformers ever in my opinion. Really hoping we get another one or a return to 3D Donkey Kong.
As for Metroid, I think it's a ticking time bomb that will explode in popularity. Re-releasing the Trilogy is a no brainer, there's a good chance MercurySteam is developing another 2D Metroid (the team hasn't released anything since 2017 and they're known for their metroid-vania style games), and we obviously have Metroid Prime 4 coming at some point. Nintendo has an insane opportunity to push Metroid as its hardcore shooter franchise, something that could pull in fans of Halo or something similar. Fingers crossed lol.
Pikmin would actually work very well on mobile devices, as long as it's different styled gameplay and not meant as a replacement. Flicking to launch pikmin, rallying them back up, it makes sense. I'm sure an AR pikmin would work quite well even as a standalone title. Just don't go down the mario kart tour and mario run route and all is well.
Interesting! Let's see what my garden holds.
Also means that Pikmin 4 is closer to home. Hopefully winter this year.
Interesting but, besides Pokemon Go for a fair few months, I haven't really gotten into any of Nintendo's mobile games so far. I have probably tried them all.
When people say "I thought we'd get more 1st party games on Switch because Nintendo has no dedicated handheld to be developing for too"... This is one of the reasons that didn't happen. They're spreading their resources to phone crap.
If this relies heavily on going out like Pokemon Go, Its prone to failing due to the pandemic.
If it does well this could be big for the Pikmin franchise.
Move along. These are not the pikmin games you're looking for
And finally Arlo got his new Pikmin game, just not as he expected
Obligatory Arlo Comment
@Desrever It doesn't get brought up much but Miyamoto was quite influential over the original Pokemon games.
He was interested in it and supported Gamefreak even when Nintendo rejected the original concept. And he pushed for the link cable trading/multilayer concepts and the multiple versions. The Japanese games have "Shigeru" as an option for Blue/Gary's name.
So it kind of made sense for him to show off GO.
@danemord He'll propably hate it like Hey Pikmin! The guy acts like series should only be one way.
Yes. It’s pikmin. You can’t say no to pikmin
@Dr_Lugae he'll probably kill it with fire
@1UP_MARIO Except for 'Hey! Pikmin". You should definitely say no to that one.
This is cute, I'm interested. I still hope Pikmin 4 is in the works, but this is cute.
@Ogbert it was a decent game. Take pikmin away from the title and it was a good game late on the 3ds
@1UP_MARIO hmm, I’d say it was a pretty mediocre game with or without the Pikmin branding, but each to their own!
...
I think I will wait for a new mainline Pikmin, thanks.
I'm not really into Pikmin and I don't use my phone for games, so imma pass on this one. Sorry
@Heavyarms55 Simple. You grow/breed Pikmin, probably on a timer. You use them to fight monsters and gain points, those points/candy can then be invested in new Pikmin, just like how corpes become new Pikmin in the games.
You can probably select a team of 100 Pikmin of different types. Red Pikmin are still immune to fire attacks, etc. Sprays can boost your attack, defence or speed for 30 minutes or an hour. I expect stuff like that, if they do something similar to Pkmn GO.
Pikmin would be the next best thing for a mobile app. Although, I'm not too familiar with the series, but from my small understanding of it, it would be a good fit a mobile title.
Sounds interesting, but it has to have a hook to it, otherwise it’ll be forgotten in a week.
Makes a lot of sense for the franchise.
Going on walks to look for AR bugs and monstrosities in nature. Collect AR fruit or ship parts to upgrade your gameplay options.
Maybe you will be flicking pikmin at bulborbs like you used to throw poke balls.
Maybe rescuing them from rampaging ar beasts...
I do like me some Pikmin... I just hope it's not monetised out of its ears
@MasterJay I have most of what I want on tour without spending anything...but yeah, I could see how someone could spend a ton on this.
@rockodoodle That’s impressive. How often do you play? I was playing a lot the first month, but quite after not unlocking my racers. Which stinks because I was enjoying the game a good bit.
It’s a shame they’re continuing the Niantic partnership beyond Pokémon Go. There have literally always been several game breaking bugs at any given moment throughout PoGo’s history. It’s also somehow one of the greediest F2P mobile games I’ve ever played. How a game can make a billion dollars a year every year since launch and still not function is beyond comprehension. Hopefully Nintendo helps Niantic out this time because I’m interested in this project and all PoGo is missing is that Nintendo polish.
@MasterJay I played it for about two, maybe months. I just get the logon ruby bonus now. It has lost its appeal. I mean it’s actually kinda cool to have on iPad on occasion.
I think this won't work.
@Heavyarms55 they say mobile app in the tweet not mobile game, may be it's just an ar app to take pictures with pikmin.
AR seems so much more intriguing and practical than VR to me atm. Interested to see the tech and applications game devs & others continue to come up with.
Hoping for F-Zero AR next!
@NEStalgia I saw this popping up in my twitter feed yesterday but really had no idea what it was. Now I wish I hadn't.
"a walking AR game" so people can continually look at their phone while they walk? What could possibly go wrong?

@MS7000 Seriously not trying to piss you off mate, but aren't you being a bit shabby in your comments on Nintendo? An opinions an opinion after all. They've done wrong, yea, but they've done some good over the past year.
@NintendoGamerGuy No offense taken, but can you explain further what you mean? I am unsure if you are referring to my comment on this article or if you have happened to see other comments I may have made on other articles.
Considering this is Niantic there will probably be some location based features but I do wonder what the overall "loop" would be for this
@MS7000 I'm more referring to your posts in general. Your opinion is respected here, it's just that I noticed that you don't seem to look at the positives of things.
@rjejr Pokemon Go had people walking into the Fukushima exclusion zone. Everyone desired rare Pokemon! That won't happen with Pikmin Go. Nobody cares about Pikmin that much.
@NEStalgia "Nobody cares about Pikmin that much."
Well if ya download the app you probably do. 😉 And if you are supposed to be walking to see the Pikmin I give it 15 minutes after release before some idiot is hit by a car.
Well hopefully some idiot and not some kid who sees a Pikmin on the other side of the road and runs to catch it. I have kids, dead kid stories really freak me out.
Flop or disaster, either way it doesn't end well.
@rjejr No, you just say "Nintendo" and "Free" and decided it must be worth trying. But nobody cares about Pikmin. 4 generations in, that much is obvious.
Admit it, it's not the kids, you're the one that would run across a busy street to find a Pikmin. I'm pretty sure you're the only one on the internet
@NEStalgia "I'm pretty sure you're the only one on the internet"
2 million strong boy-o
https://nintendoeverything.com/pikmin-3-deluxe-is-the-best-selling-pikmin-game-ever/
Release game on Wii U
Don't market it
Release game on switch
Pretend it's new
Profit!
@rjejr Of course Pikmin 3 is the best selling Pikmin ever. The first 2 were on a console nobody bought. Then re-released on a console everybody over age 80 bought for calisthenics class where even Mario and Zelda failed to sell by the end. Then the third was made for a console that was the same nobody as Gamecube, but only 75% as much nobody that bought it, and it finally released one iteration on a console that a lot of people bought and actually intended to play video games on.
If Pikmin counts as a success, so does Knack.
@NEStalgia "If Pikmin counts as a success, so does Knack. "
Was Sony selling 5 minute Knack shorts for $5 each? I don't think so.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/11/pikmin_short_movies_available_to_buy_now_on_wii_u_and_3ds
@rjejr Apparently there was a limited time release of whale milk way back in 2014. I forgot all about that. Although the game flopped hard at the time so....I imagine the shorts flopped harder.
@NintendoGamerGuy I suppose quite a lot of my recent posts do seem negative. I probably should look at the positives more, but for me, there really aren't many to look at and praise. For example, Nintendo's recent releases have been quite port heavy recently, and I am happy that people get to play these games, but at the same time, I personally have played these games before so seeing more ports doesn't entice me to like Nintendo very much at present. As soon as Nintendo does something that I think is good though, I will be more than happy to praise them, it's just there seems to be more things for me that I don't consider to be good things.
@NEStalgia Shorts are good though, I recommend, now that they are free, as commercials for your game should be, but Nintendo.
And nobody has been clamoring for Knack 3 like people have bene clamoring for Pikmin 4.
Sorry, it was a bad comparison game series. Just look at the merchandise, Pikmin are cool.
@rjejr Only Nintendo, and probably Apple could get away with selling commercials for $5 each. It takes a special kind of consumerism that's willing to trade money in exchange for an ad for products you can buy. It's like when they charged for the Sears Catalog back when Sears was Amazon before Bezos was born and before Sears forgot they were Sears before Amazon.
I still find it hilarious that the company that managed to deliver player pianos via USPS to the middle of dust bowl in the 19th century somehow forgot how to do mail order by the late 20th, and meanwhile some Wall Street hack starts doing mail order and gets credit for reinventing/destroying retail. How? By doing what Sears did a century before, half as well? I mean RDR2 could legitimately have had a Sears catalogue and mail order system so Arthur can sit on his rear and buy stuff, and been historically accurate. But Bezos invented it.... Not that the product placement would have netted the kind of cash Cup Noodle must have been offering Squeenix.
Hey, I've been clamoring for Knack 3 the way you're clamoring for Pikmin 4. Careful who you call "nobody"!
Of course Pikmin are cool. It has a Nintendo logo on it. If Knack had an Apple logo on him they'd be going for $1000 on eBay. Remember after the 2008 crash the malls all went empty because designer label fell out of fashion? Well now we have Apple, Nintendo, and random tech companies that just moved Aigner into Best Buy with a different logo. We can half a half eaten fruit that says "Juicy" across someone's LED-glowing posterior. It shows the time when you touch it and connects to Fitbit.
(And I do like Pikmin....but it's kind of the black sheep of the Nintendo family aside from Mother. )
@NEStalgia "Hey, I've been clamoring for Knack 3 the way you're clamoring for Pikmin 4. Careful who you call "nobody"! "
Well unless 4 years ago Cerny announced that Knack 3 was "nearing completion" but then 2 years later released a "Hey Knack!" side-scroller on Vita instead it isn't possible you've been clamoring for it as much as I've been waiting on Pikmin 4 to be all the way complete. 😝
Sears was our parents Amazon. None of the cool kids want to shop where their parents shopped. But for the record, I never paid for 1 of their catalogues. But where Amazon beat Sears is at inflating ego. You buy a book at Sears, you read it. You buy a book on Amazon, you write a 10 paragraph review and wait for all the "like" clicks to roll in, then you write your own "My 10 Must Read books" list and claim your 15 minutes of fame when somebody agrees w/ 8 out of 10 of them. And then you get to pay $120 a year for "free" shipping. How could Sears compete w/ "free" at $120?
@rjejr I'd take "Hey! Knack" on Vita if they offered......... At this point, I think if Cerny announced Knack 3, they'd hire Phil Spencer to design the PS6.
I wasn't a cool kid. I just shop where my parents shopped. It works. It's functional. Don't change horses in mid-stream. I miss Kmart & Sears. Though I still occasionally buy online from them when they actually have any items in a given category to sell. They ship my stuff like an hour after I order it. UPS. Amazon says they'll deliver in 2 days. They ship it 2 days later via their own carrier with minimal tracking, it says out for delivery but it doesn't arrive, and then they say to wait 5 days before they'll refund me. They deliver it a day or 2 later. Kmart & Sears is down from 4300 combined stores to like 40.....and they still do Amazon better than Amazon. The problem is they have no inventory left to sell. So it's like the Maytag man shipping orders.
EDIT: The other day I placed an order, and it didn't ship the same day. The next morning they CALLED ME - an actual person in an actual store or warehouse holding an actual phone called me.....told me they don't have the color I ordered by they have another one, would I want that instead? I said sure. 10 minutes later I got the shipment confirmation. Try that with the Amazon chat support robot that you have to wait to connect to a script-clicking human in Somewheristan that refuses to help you because the script had no option for your problem*
I love my $120 "free" shipping. I ordered something for $25 with free shipping last week. It was great. Or I could have bought it from the same page from a different vendor. It was $15 w/ $10 shipping. $120+25 is way cheaper than $15+10. New math for Web 2.5. (In fairness I do get my money's worth on free shipping because I buy half of evertyhing on Amazon because it bets an hour + round trip to get to the nearest any other store beyond grocery & convenience stores through gridlock and "aggressive drivers." - every time you go to Walmart or Target you're taking a massive gamble on insurance premiums. No thanks. El Jeffy can have my $120. It's cheaper insurance.
You're right though about the ego inflation. I just don't "get" that element of society I guess. I see these "my 10 must read book lists" and all I can think is "who the eff are you and and why is anybody supposed to care?" Everybody's a celebrity expert in their own universe now. Product reviews are useful...there's definitely products that some people with waaaay too much time on their hands tore things apart and wrote in detail everything wrong with a product. Then there's the people that buy the product and tell you how it has flaws but you can make it work well for only $10 in parts from Tractor Supply, a bench full of power tools and clamps, some scalpels you have lying around, some cedar shims, nylon string, a bit of #32 metallic paint, a detail brush, and an arc welder to close it up, in just 30-40 hours of work to make it "really pretty ok and saves a lot of money!"
(EDIT2: LOL otoh I just got my daily email ad from Kmart advertising PS5 in stock! It's all 3rd party sellers as most of their ads these days are, selling for $1100 For that money you could buy 3/4 of a new phone! )
@Bizaster I'm sure it's a prelude to Hey! Pikmin HD on Switch next Holiday. GET HYPE!
