Konami has announced that Super Bomberman R Online is launching on Switch and other platforms on 27th May as a digital-only, free-to-play title.
The game was first announced for Switch back in March, when Konami revealed it would be ditching its previous Stadia exclusivity. A spin-off from Super Bomberman R, Online brings back the 8 Bomber Brothers and others as a 64-player, online battle royale, tasking players with blasting through battlefields, finding hidden power-ups and using them to blow away their enemies.
The new multi-platform launch is bringing other goodies along for the ride. First up, new in-game seasons are about to become a thing; each of these will last three months and bring new items, cosmetics, and a new Bomber hero to the game. Season 1 adds none other than Metal Gear Solid star, 'Old Snake Bomber'.
There'll also be a two-tier Battle Pass system, just like every other modern free-to-play title out there. The 'Silver Pass' will be free to all players, but the optional 'Gold Pass' offers up greater rewards over each season's 100 ranks. Expect to earn cosmetic rewards including taunts, accessories and poses across both Passes; the Gold version costs 800 Bomber Coins to enjoy.
Will you be giving this one a go when it hits Switch next week? Tell us in the usual place.

...it's not just me right? There were a bunch of articles claiming that game was only possible on Stadia, right?
Edit: not here, but in general
YES this is the most pumped I've ever been for a Royale-genre game.
great another royale game to suck at.
does look great tho!
Does anyone know why the matches allow up to 64 players? Or is this just a reference to the greatest console of all time?
Oh this is really cool!
Hmm, I would be interested if it was not a free-to-play title but instead a paid experience with some single player content as well.
But then again, that is pretty much the original Super Bomberman R.
This will be the first battle royale I'll throw money at
Play this game regularly with my mates on our Games Nights. Great fun!
Glad I never bought the "normal" Bomberman R then.
I will give it a try, could be entertaining
Ugh. I just got a physical copy for my birthday from one of my friends. What should I do guys???
Nothing for purchasers of the Switch version? I wanted to bring my Goemon skin over.
I played it a lot on Stadia and it's great.
I believe they seen the popularity of Fortnite, Tetris 99, Super Mario Bros. 35, and Pac-Man 99 and say well there's more actions over there than empty Stadia so yeah let's abandon ship.
@Daniel36 The original was an actual game with a deep Story and Multiplayer modes both online and offline, this one is just an always online battle royale game. They're really not the same.
Bomberman definitely lends itself well to a free-to-play online battle royale game. However, I (somewhat admittedly irrationally) feel like I should be partially refunded for my purchase of Super Bomberman R since that game's online has been barren, unsupported and rendered useless ever since I got it and almost certainly even moreso now with this release.
That being said I love Bomberman! I'd love to see the Roois from Bomberman '94 return and new full customization & creation tools for characters, levels, items, rules and matches.
It's also time for a new 3D Bomberman with multiplayer battles like Bomberman 64 and single player like Bomberman Hero.
... Wun can only hope.
Oh, I thought it was a update for Bomber man, R? kinda glade I didn't buy it on the switch, I was just to get the BR mode.
Plus there is a battle pass!? man they looks great, I hope its a game I will play every now and then.
Well don't mind if I do, can't wait to play this one HEhe.
Stadia lol
Google really are dreadful at everything they do
No Nintendo Online required, right?
@Daniel36 you should be, it was dog *****
If this works * then I'll be loving it.
The asterisk is b/c online never worked in the Switch Bomberman. It was a lagfest worse than any game I've ever played online. I even upgraded my network to see if I could make it playable - but no.
So - I am skeptical, and hopeful, and excited if it does actually work online.
This is gonna sound dumb, because it is, but I wish that this spinoff game could be added as a free update directly into Super Bomberman R if we happen to already have that game (which I do). I know, stupid thing to really have any concern about considering its free either way, I just like when there is less clutter in my collection of available Switch games that shows up on my Switch, and having 2 Super Bomberman R games right next to each other, one with the added 'Online' at the end, is just one of those things that rubs me the wrong way.
@Luminous117 A game like Tetris 99 is also free yet it requires a subscription. That is why I asked, just to be sure.
@NoTimeForBS Tetris 99 isn’t free. It’s included with an NSO. It’s a slight but important distinction.
Think of this as being similar to Fortnite rather than something tied directly to NSO.
As someone who just does these sorts of titles for 20 minutes at the end of the evening having the singular goal of not finishing dead last... I'm fine with this as FTP. I'm thankful for the serious folks interested in rankings and such that fund it.
Even after being aware of this, I decided to pick up regular Super Bomberman R for Switch. Not such a terrible game, but could be better. Nice we'll get the battle royale one, though I wish they could include it as an update to those with regular R.
If the battle pass is $10, I'll purchase it (once), just because I love me some bomberman, even if I suck at it.
If people who bought Super Bomberman R get special treatment (similarly to people who bought Rocket League or benefits from Fortnite: Save the World), then this would be worth my time.
@GMACGAMER1234 That's a different game. You got 'Super Bomberman R' this is 'Super Bomberman R Online'. Similar names but completely different games.
@Luminous117 Yeah, thats my bad...I realized I misremembered it after the fact. They are different situations.
@Ajent Yeah, thx for reminding me, I forgot about it being the case. Those 2 are indeed different, my bad.
@KoopaTheGamer if Konami was smart, they'd offer the original R as a discounted upgrade from this.
@link3710 Probably were paid off by Google to say that or something, in a last ditch attempt to market Stadia.
Bomber Man R is still one of my favorite pick up and play games on the Switch. Will defiantly check this out.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi not the same at all. I would much rather buy the other one. Much more fun.
