If you've somehow missed the news, Nintendo is planning on removing a number of Mario games and products from stores at the end of this month and, in a recent statement, has reiterated the fact that it isn't backing down from its controversial decision to do so.
It's been a very hot topic amongst the Nintendo community, and now, in what we're sure is just a case of poor timing rather than actual cheekiness, the company has decided to celebrate the Nintendo Switch's fourth anniversary with fans online by taking a look back at all of the Mario games available on the system.
"It's been four years since the release of Nintendo Switch," the message reads, before asking fans how long they've been playing the console for.
Ironically, as you can see, the image features both Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Super Mario Bros. 35, two of the products set to be wiped from existence at the end of the month. Some fans have been quick to point this out in the replies, "fixing" the image in the process.

Oh Nintendo, what are you doing?

Nintendo: the kings of bad business decisions
Imagine if they do limited release for botw 2
Still haven't bought nintendo switch online, so Mario 35 will be leaving the store with me never having experienced it.
Good bye mario
Okey dokey
I really don’t see what the big deal is. I got my copy. I assume most people that wanted one got one too. If they wipe out All Stars on the Switch app then I’d probably be upset
@Nymos I wouldn't really say that. Sure, they've made some stupid decisions, and sure, the limited release is quite annoying, but from Nintendo's perspective, it was a great decision considering 3D All Stars sold over 8 million copies.
English speakers being brats towards the Japanese twitter account. Whatever.
@ObeseChihuahua2 Yeah, not everything fans think is a bad business decision is actually a bad business decision. Try explaining that to someone who wants to own Mario 35 forever though
Nintendo is lame they couldn't even put all their Mario games in there. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is missing from that tweet. How do you miss your own game from NSO of all places?
glad i got my copy of 3d all stars, but i still can't wrap my mnd around how idiotic this is
@Pojos98 People like to be upset at Nintendo. The three-pack — which people complained about its price when it came out --- has sold over 8 million copies, so I don't know how much more of a market there is for it. And many guess that the games will be available as separate downloads in the future. If that is the case, the only thing that is really going away is Mario 35 (which personally is not my cup of tea and which ironically is the only Special Theme for Tetris 99 that I failed to grab). It may be that Nintendo plans to use that space and bandwidth to rotate special games. Or it may be that there is a cost associated with operating a free game forever.
Wiped from eShop, yes. From existence, no. Except maybe for SM35, but the last couple years have discontinued so many server-crutched freemiums (including Switch stuff like Growtopia and Dawn of the Breakers) that I'm getting numb to this kind of oof. That said, only time will tell if this stuff truly NEVER resurfaces anywhere down the road.
Another article to insight complaints and hate against Nintendo! Got to give credit to Nintendolife for knowing how to get their clicks lol
Not Random At All: NintendoLife Intentionally Overstates Corporate Decision to Elicit Response From Knee-jerk Audience. Also, Doesn't Know What Irony Is.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi i think in japan it is considered to be a different series since it isn't super mario world 2 there. it's definitely a mario game to me regardless
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Because it's not called Mario World 2 in Japan as it's not a real Mario game. It was just named that in the west for marketing purposes.
Nintendo would be crazy to not offer the ports of the Mario’s as individual game purchases for every other switch owner who wants just one of them or who buys a switch over the next 4 years.
I understand Mario 35 being a limited time thing, it’s free and it would be nice to be a full game...but I’m sure Nintendo has stuff planned for zelda as the year progresses. Play it while you can and move on to the hundreds of other games switch has to offer too. And plenty are free too.
@JimmySpades @Patendo Yes, saying Mario 3D All-Stars is being "wiped from existence" is a ridiculous statement unless eBay and other second hand stores are also being wiped from existence.
Nintendo snapped away many Mario games on the forbidden date: March 31st 2021.
NINTENDO: ENDGAME
@Clyde_Radcliffe Yes, Nintendo is actually sniping down anyone who tries to sell these items secondhand.
Man, people need to move on... lol
I hope people get the opportunity to purchase Super Mario 3D All Stars and Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light before it's over. I'm happy I was able to get both before Nintendo pulled the plug.
It will be a sad day when I can no longer play Super Mario 35, that game is pretty much my favorite battle royale but I haven't put a huge amount of time into it because it is pointless since it's going away pretty soon. It is legitimately a fantastic game that we will no longer be able to play.
I'm willing to bet that we'll get each game available a la carte at $29.99 a pop, digital only. Which would make Galaxy 2 seem more likely as well.
not buying sm3das out of principle. my switch is hackable. i haven’t hacked it yet but………
@Pojos98 Exactly. While it’s strange for them to only want to make these games available for six months, it’s very easy to get a copy and they told everyone from the moment they announced it that it was going away at the end of March. If really wanted a copy, you would have bought one by now. Seems like a lot of fake outrage to me.
It's hard to rationalize why SM35 and especially SM3D All Stars must be time-limited releases, but we should try to keep in mind that Nintendo is a Japanese company so I'm not particularly surprised.
Reflecting on my years living in Japan, where everything was a "gentei" (limited) sale for this or that, I would say that consumers there are more accustomed to these time-limited events/products than perhaps shoppers in other countries.
Shoppers in Japan may not like it especially, but they pay attention and take advantage while they can.
I bet (hope) Nintendo will bring the games back in some form in the not-so-distant future.
I certainly don’t care about these games being removed.
I’m going to make an optimistic prediction and say that Mario 35 will return in some form. This might have been acting like a beta or demo version to gage interest. Maybe it comes back with more games like Mario 3 or World. Or even Zelda?
As other commenters have said... it is very likely that these games will be available digitally... Hopefully as N64/Gamecube/wii digital service games!! I can’t wait for more games to use these emulators; I think we will see N64 at least this summer. And when GC comes out.. hopefully we get a doshin and Captain Rainbow localization! Then Mario 35 can come out again in 5 years as Mario 40,45, etc so it’s something to look forward to. Nintendo will find a way to keep us playing old games, I’m sure of it
A good thing irony is dead...
Imagine lecturing a company with a 12 billion dollar revenue stream about "bad business decisions."
@Nymos Like you, I don’t like the limited release aspect of this, but unfortunately it does make good business sense.
Firstly, by time limiting it, they sold over 8 million copies. Secondly, Nintendo learnt the hard lesson of the Virtual Console, which is that ultimately putting out too much retro content hurts sales of their products.
Why does no one want NES or SNES games still? Because we’ve been oversaturated with them since the Wii era – that’s why people rightly want N64 and GameCube games on Switch Online.
The problem for Nintendo is that it makes more sense for them to ‘Disney Vault’ everything – release the games very infrequently but often enough to keep milking them, whereas if you make them readily available they ultimately lose some of their value if too many people can play them whenever they want and it reduces the desirability factor of 'buy now - or you might not have another chance'.
People need to get over this. The games are there to be bought and played right now. Go do it. And if you don't have a Switch yet, well, four years has been enough time to scrape together the money. Half the people complaining probably have backlogs numbering in the dozens. I get that this is not the best situation, but it's not the end of the world.
@Yoshi87 It also helps them keep third party devs on board. In contrast to 3DS and WiiU I think Nintendo have purposely limited 1st party offerings to premium games for Switch.
So indie devs and third parties can take up the budget market on the eShop without sales being soaked up by Nintendo's back catalogue.
So deals like three 3D Mario games for £50 or even Fire Emblem 1 for £5.99 may be temporary so they don't interfere with the lower end market long term.
If we get my nieces a Switch next Christmas, we won't have the option to buy Mario 3D All-Stars. They've played Mario Odyssey all the way through when we visit, and I think they'd want 3D All-Stars. But I'm not buying another copy of 3D All-Stars for a console that may or may not come.
@Nymos They have to keep up their legacy of being anti consumer. Wouldnt be Nintendo if they didnt ***** the consumer.
Really milking this one news thing for months now.
@1ofUs they have a history of doing limited releases with collections. They are not gonna do it for a game they want to sell for years...
@earthinheritor crazy that you feel it is that extreme. They sell entertainment products. If you think they are f***ing you why would you choose to be part of their ecosystem
@Dr_Lugae Yes - that's a very good observation. I totally agree with you.
Nintendo: "Celebrate our games!.... no, not like that!"
@Brutchie-bear A company that makes a living selling products is anti-consumer. It just makes no sense. Like a delicatessen putting a laxative in each sandwich. I would say that a lot of people around here are anti-real world.
Why the freak out on this? We've known about this from day 1 and this isn't the first time Nintendo has done a limited release. The games will be back. Dunno about Super Mario 35 tho. But it could easily return.
People need to chill.
March 31st can’t come soon enough. I’m tired of all the whining.
@Joekun Well said, but the whining will never stop.
@1ofUs They won't. BOTW2 is too big of a deal to make it available for a limited time.
It is kind of a shame, that's true enough. But it's also kind of a shame I can't still buy a 3DS or 3DS games brand new, or for that matter an N64.
Things come, things go, get them whilst you can I guess is the message. I'm fortunate enough to have gotten the things I wanted from this, and whilst I shall miss Super Mario 35, I hope that it gives them the taste to do something else in a similar vein very soon.
A quote proving big companies are beyond criticism on business choices:
“I happen to represent Enron here in Houston. We have many good corporate citizens here in Houston. Enron happened to have been one.” -Lee
I’m not on a “side” here- many parents way back when considered the SNES to be a dirty move too, yet many here love the SNES. It’s ok for us to have diverse views right?
I’d buy FE1, but i can’t afford a Switch so I’m over it.
I would say that people who are still defending this will have a shock when this tactic does eventually find itself used on a new major release, but if history tells us anything, it's that they'll find a way to justify that too.
@Pojos98 Yeah, just because fans think that something is a dumb decision doesn't mean that it is a dumb decision. You can cry about the price of games until the cows come home, but people are willing to pay those prices, and Nintendo is raking in the dough from those prices, so they aren't changing it.
NintendoLife: Leaders of Innovative Clickbait Articles of the same topic for three days.
Cannot wait for the inevitable anniversary article of when Mario All-Stars was removed.
Still we have people defending Nintendo's practices here. People will buy a Switch after the end of March and why shouldn't they be able to buy this game? Should they just stop selling every game after 6 months because people have had plenty of opportunity to buy them? Ridiculous some of the comments on here
Nofriendo.... Le sigh
@Burning_Spear anti-real world or just just no understanding of the real world? That is the burning question.
@mr_benn yes but Nintendo didn't stop selling N64 games 6 months after putting them on shelves. The Switch is very much Nintendo's future so your analogy makes no sense
It is not like they will delete your game/steal your cartridge though...
@carlos82 - Wait til they find out buying Splatoon doesn't grant them access to Splatfests. Or wanting to return to a WiiWare title you bought to this day cause of dirty timed practices.
Man, imagine the people who buy a Switch after market and have to try and find the actively 8 million units confirmed in circulation.
Or worse, the 2 million for Xenoblade.
Why is everyone up in arms about this? It was announced as a limited run at launch. It’s not a surprise in any way. If you want it buy it, if not don’t? What’s the point in complaining?
@Burning_Spear True, but I mean the news stories that provide a platform for the whining will subside. I mean, there are 2 stories in the last day about it.
@Paraka what has WiiWare or a Wii U game got to do with this?
Why are people so upset about this, for once they were announced as limited
also they won't go lol, you can mark my words.
@carlos82 - Timed promotional material and the imposed restrictions brought by Nintendo.
There is other games out there by Nintendo that has Mario on it. The game has 8 million sold, into market circulation right now. With roughly 2-3 million on shelves right now. Other Mario games sold less and are still readily available post market within reason (40-50 on more rarer games).
Nintendo Life being Nintendo Life with the clickbait.
So let's be clear: The games are not being wiped from existence. If you bought them in physical format you will always have them.
It was announced before they were released that they would be discontinued at the end of March. People that want the game have had plenty of time to buy. There have certainly been no stock shortages that I've seen reported.
If you downloaded them they will always be on your Switch - make sure you keep them on an SD card otherwise long after the Switch is discontinued you may no longer be able to re-download them. This is not an issue unique to Nintendo Switch. You make that choice when you buy digital only. It is unreasonable to expect a any company to support an online infrastructure when the cost becomes greater than the return.
Do we know if Super Mario 35 will work after it's no longer available to download?
I'd also point out that Super Mario 35 was free to those with Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo is under no obligation to support it forever.
But I don't get the point of them taking them off the online store. Super Mario 35 is a good way to get people interested in Nintendo Switch Online as its fun. Mario 3D All Stars is surely easy money for Nintendo with people still buying Nintendo Switches by the bucket load. Sure, don't produce the p
physical version anymore, but removing the digital one? Just weird business practices. All physical games eventually have their production discontinued.
Awww all the butt hurt comments lol
@Paraka still no reason to remove it from sale
Not to defend the approach Nintendo has taken, but I feel like people spend more time complaining about Nintendo's plan to get rid of Super Mario Bros. 35 than they do actually playing it.
As for 3D All-Stars, the originals still exist, the Switch version has sold a ton of copies that will always be out there, and, frankly, I'm not convinced Nintendo isn't going to just list them separately once the collection is delisted.
As for Fire Emblem, it'll join NSO once it's not on sale anymore. Mark my words.
@carlos82 - How many games did you buy in the last 6 months?
@Nymos Nintendo is SUPREMELY lucky that they make so many great and beloved things... because some of their business decisions... oof.
@Mallow I agree that Nintendo is a GREAT company. They're creator driven! Independent! Fair to employees! They don't release unplayable buggy messes! They are light years ahead of most game developers.
They just do weird stuff like remove games people want from the marketplace. They also killed a WONDERFUL system like the Wii U with asinine marketing choices. They did the Virtual Boy. It's just a surprising number of "wut?" decisions by a company that gets so much right.
@Paraka lots across various platforms. Guess what though people are still yet to buy a Switch, what if they stopped selling BOTW 6 months after launch or Mario Kart 8 or all of their games
@MrFox March 31 is the final day of the fiscal year, so maybe there's that.
Bue yeah, i think theyll sell them, MAYBE NOT AS A PACK like 3D stars, but for surely each of them individually
@ObeseChihuahua2 And I’m not saying it’s right either, but people actually expecting Nintendo to act how the want is just a recipe for disappointment.
@carlos82 - They don't exist til they buy the system. You're lamenting over people of no consequence.
What if they never buy a Switch? How dreadful!
Reality though; They had seven months to be informed, there is no law or regulation to buy a console first and then you're allowed the wealth of information and access to games. They could have picked up the game before the Switch.
I didn't know of half the GCN games when I finally got to mine. But many stopped being sold after a year. Guess what? I had 4 years to look into it, 4 years to consider getting some rarer games. Remember Zelda Master Quest? I do now.
That's not on Nintendo to reprint them for me, nor is it on Nintendo for someone to actively choose not to buy Mario 3D All-Stars for 7 months after 8 million+ has already been sold.
The kicker here; If they have not bought the system til April. The chances of them doing so for Mario 3D All-Stars is dramatically non-consequential. They did it for other reasons, just like they didn't buy it for Smash or Xenoblade or Cadence of Hyrule. And it becomes increasingly smaller each week afterwards.
And the 2% of the new buyers who do want Mario 3D All-Stars? Well the after market is going to be flooded with them to a point most scalpers will be lucky to just break even. Moving 10 million at a raised price would be a dire challenge.
Nintendo can't be this stupid can they? I know they've done suspect things in the past, but removing those four games from Switch would be pointless!
I still think this whole thing is kinda dumb. I got my copy, yeah, but what about the people who haven't yet due to whatever reason? Sucks for them apparently. I dont get it but it is what it is
This probably sounds absurd, but sometimes I wish Nintendo were a company where members (fans) owned a 50%+ stake in the business, like Bundesliga football clubs in Germany. That way, decisions like this that maximise profit at the expense of customer satisfaction would be voted down. Of course, it would also bring a whole range of problems, but hey, a man can dream...
@therealkylehyde - you're assuming that Nintendo fans would all agree with each other! If the internet proves anything, it's that they do not!
@Paraka there is still absolutely no reason not to continue to sell this and especially in this digital age where they don't even have to reprint the cartridges.
Your kicker comment makes no sense either as the vast majority of Switch owners didn't buy it at launch or even in the first year bit guess what, Zelda and Mario Kart still sold well for the next few years and will do in years to come. As will most of not all of Nintendo's games apart from this one, the only way this makes any sense is if they have plans to distribute them in another fashion
@ROBLOGNICK Even if you bought them on the eShop you will always be able to redownload them. Well okay, until the eShop finally shuts down. But that won't happen for many years.
And yes, losing Super Mario Bros 35 is a bummer. But that game was always meant to end after the 35th anniversary.
I double dipped on several HD remasters on Wii U (Zelda and Zelda), XC1 on Switch, but I'll be damned if I support this sh*tty way of forcing a deadline to buy a game in the middle of a console's lifetime. I'd rather buy a 2nd hand switch, hack it and download these games illegally than support this anti-consumerism BS.
@ArcadeEighty "Fake outrage."
lol
Everyone who buys a Switch for the first time after the removal in March will miss out.
The main reason to be upset is that this half-assed port will probably never go on sale before it's out in March. It's anti-consumer and the fact that it sold millions is a testament to the main problem: people see Mario, they buy thoughtlessly. Nintendo capitalized on that, plain and simple. Now that they know they can get away with it, they will do it again. It's a strategy to beat the people who only wait for things to go on sale.
All these comments trying to psychologically break this thing down sure are rich, though.
Nintendo's the bad guy in this scenario, and they are gunning for your wallet, plain and simple.
NINJA APPROVED
@BloodNinja And I missed out on owning the iconic '57 Chevy because I wasn't alive when it was in production.
@Mince They will just stop producing new cartridges, they don't actually ban stores to sell the physical games.
Simply put, stores buy stock from Nintendo (and other publishers) and sell that to their costumers. These publishers don't control this.
Curious now to see how many copies of 3D All Stars are still floating around on April 1st...
@Burning_Spear Do you find the car valuable? Then you missed out. Do you not care about the car? Then it doesn't matter. Last I checked you can still buy that car, if you have the funds, by the way. Anyway, someone buying a Switch and then browsing the past library may feel like they missed out. If they really want the game after March, they'll be paying a scalper's premium, instead of a fair price.
And really, a classic car is your example? That's a model that was produced with a finite amount of materials. A digital game can sit on the shop for as long as they want to support their servers. Apples and oranges, mate.
This is only good for Nintendo and scalpers. People shouldn't have to miss these iconic games in a digital age.
NINJA APPROVED
@Mince It only makes sense to stop producing physical copies. I agree with you, though, it's really dumb to remove games from digital storefronts. They placed the time limit to make everyone impulse-buy the game. Great for Nintendo, and like you said, great for scalpers.
Everyone who bought this just taught Nintendo that it's okay to do it again.
NINJA APPROVED
This is definitely the waaaaahhhh of the day.
@carlos82 - "Digital Age" is a lame excuse, as I don't have access to any of the Tetris 99 event themes, nor any of the Splatfests since the games have been out. Still temporary, still digital, entirely different response from the community. Not to mention the plethora of "Season Passes" so many games do now.
Not to mention the lack of access to the WiiWare titles now, you know, in the digital age.
This isn't new, Nintendo has done this before, so has many other companies. You chose to be inconvenienced by this. And defending those that don't exist? Sally from down the street didn't ask you to stand up for her so she maybe might get a Switch soon eventually kinda. You're choosing to be inconvenienced on their behalf due to their lack of knowledge they chose to have.
You were given 7 months to choose your actions. If you wanted it, you got it. If you didn't, you prioritized better games suited for you and you shouldn't feel bad. If you're complaining, you're merely doing it out of spite of your expectations.
The practice is questionable, sure. But they made the rules of their game and how they wanna sell it. It's up to you to decide for yourself how to handle it. Just like it is up to the nobodies who don't own Switches now to decide if they will even get a Switch today or April.
@Mince Contracts like those would be illegal in many parts of the world. Like the entire EU.
@Paraka how is it? As a game can be distributed digitally there is absolutely no reason for it to be available for a limited time, just a poor decision which benefits absolutely nobody, no matter how much you want to make rubbish comparisons to try and justify it
I still think there's more to this than people know, but hey, it's far more fun to whine about things and endlessly speculate about Nintendo's business practices (and it would appear that they are considerably richer than yaaaaaaau so......).
Anyways...... Yeah, doesn't make much sense. Moving on.
@BloodNinja You have no proof this is "good for Nintendo." If the game were left on retailers' shelves and the eShop for another three years, Nintendo likely would have sold more. This is a limited edition item. Buy it now or don't buy it at all.
People say nothing of the countless limited editions that have been produced in laughably negligible quantities and have NEVER been restocked (cough Fire Emblem Fates cartridge with all three campaigns) but people freak out over something that has been available in abundance, albeit with Nintendo being forthright about it being a limited product?
I strongly doubt that these will suddenly no longer be available on shelves from April. It is simply the matter that stock will no longer be replenished.
@Nymos I thought that was EA
@Nymos Yes. That explains why they’re literally the richest company in Japan. Bad business decisions.
@Burning_Spear Here's a link to the wikipedia page for the game: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_3D_All-Stars#Sales
"In its first week of release, Super Mario 3D All-Stars was the best-selling game in the UK, and was the third-largest game launch of 2020 and the fifth-fastest selling Switch game in the country.[44] In Japan, the game sold over 210,000 physical copies within the first three days of its release.[45] In the United States, Super Mario 3D All-Stars was the second-best selling game of September behind Marvel's Avengers, and had become the 10th best-selling game of 2020.[46][47] The collection was also the best-selling game in September for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.[48] As of December 2020, Super Mario 3D All-Stars has sold over 8.32 million copies worldwide.[49]"
8.32 million * $60 = A LOT OF DOLLARS
That's good for them, last I checked.
@Burning_Spear This! I don’t understand why so many people believe Nintendo couldn’t sell more copies if they kept 3D All Stars available for the life of the Switch.
@ObeseChihuahua2 Yeah but I think they would've sold more over time, here you get short term gains but then the game will stop selling, but a collection like this would be a great game to get any time.
Hardly wiped from existence...
@idrawrobots Some people refuse to understand it and simply prefer to attack anything that doesn't suit their needs. I bash Nintendo when I believe it's warranted, but companies can release limited-edition products. It's not unfair or offensive.
I want to drink Coca-Cola from a can with a polar bear on it, but those cans have been sold out since December. Evil Coca-Cola.
I want to buy a vinyl copy of Bob Marley's Natty Dread, but they stopped making those in the '70s. Evil Island Records.
I want to eat an Egg McMuffin for supper, but the McDonald's breakfast menu stops at 11 a.m. McDonald's is anti-consumer.
I want to buy a Pumpkin Spice Latte for my young niece, but evil Starbucks stopped selling them three months ago. That poor little girl!
I want to buy a winter coat, but they're not in stores anymore. Evil stores.
I also want to buy a Saturn SUV, but Saturn went out of business. Evil Saturn.
I want to buy the Virtual Boy, but evil Nintendo stopped selling them ... after greedy Nintendo started selling them in the first place.
All of these items should be sold in perpetuity. And the companies should have succession plans, so if they go out of business another company can manufacture it. Anybody got a typewriter?
First world problems.
@ROBLOGNICK Amen
@Paraka Take a much-deserved bow.
@AmplifyMJ
Exactly what I'm was thinking , bit of a knee jerk reaction and obvious clickbait.
Really can Ryan tell us how it's been wiped from existence!
Maybe if all copies in the world disappeared as well as digital versions.
Nintendo fans are a special breed... If it were possible to find out this exact number, I would bet $1,000 that at least 95% of the people complaining about the game being pulled at the end of March have either - A) Already bought a copy or B) Have zero interest in ever buying a copy. Today is the first time I have seen the argument “What about the people who buy a Switch after March? What on earth will they do? My heart bleeds for these poor souls!”
Yeah, I’m sure it does. I guess they’ll just have to buy it new/used on eBay, at GameStop, on Facebook Marketplace, borrow it from someone who did buy it or, as many expect, wait for Nintendo to release them individually on the eShop later this year. And that’s only after the copies dry up at retail.
Wiped from existence? Give me a break. People are going way too bat-s*** crazy over this. Go buy it and forget about it. Then hide your regret later about making a huge foolish spectacle over this nothing issue when they re-release these under different branding or individually. And then again on the next system.
I don't get it. I'm fine with these games only being limited runs. I wanted Mario 3d allstars, I got it day one. And I think most people that really wanted it did the same. This is done in more then just video games so it shouldn't be new or anything to get upset about. But what do I know.
Heh, I like that more than a decade later they still made another Mario & Sonic game, so it's funny to see Sonic show up on that Switch collage thing about Mario games.
Still bummed Mario Maker 2 doesn't have a Sonic costume or that Ultimate underfeatured the series.
@MrFox Oh, they totally will. I'm expecting either $24.99 or $29.99 per game. They'll say $59.99 for three games was just a special deal for the anniversary celebration. Hopefully we get a similar deal with a Wind Waker HD/Twilight Princess HD two-pack, but I'm fully expecting those Wii U ports to be full price individually as well.
@carlos82 - Same can be asked about WiiWare. Or any temporary event in any game, Splatfests, Mario 35, free NSO trials, Season Passes, MMO holidays.
They're digital, so therefore I should have eternal access to them if I own the system they're on.
But I don't.
So anyone who wants 3D all stars or 35, but didn't get a chance wont be able to. It just stinks.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi
So is Yoshi's Island considered a Mario game or not...make up your mind Nintendo.
@Nymos Sadly, this is actually a great business decision. By putting a solid expiration date on the product they've guaranteed more sales than what they would have gotten.
Annoying and anti-consumer? Yup. Bad business? Anything but.
Somedays i wish Mario would disappear. It's actually good they are making it limited, as that is a firm gauge on current popularity. And the people that got it can feel good about their purchase.
I have no objections, because i like Nintendo for their IP other than Mario. (Mario Karts his best game, and he needs his mates to pull that off).
@carlos82 it is a celebration of an anniversary. These are "bonus" games, like the 3DS ambassador games, The Zelda collection on Gamecube, the extra games in Mario 64DS. And honestly chances are they'll be available in another form in the future. Either as "pack ins" for a Mario themed Switch bundle or "free bonus" for the next major Mario game, Mario's wallet is missing.
@Nymos this is a good business decision but it's a move lol
Ryan, if all you’re gonna do is hate Nintendo, maybe you shouldn’t be writing articles on a Nintendo fan site. If you still take that God awful site known as Twitter seriously, that says a lot about you as a person. You most likely engage in Twitter’s bullying tactics if you still use it nowadays.
Discouraging people from loving Nintendo is such trash thing for you to do.
EDIT: Oh my God. I looked back on this comment and I was really harsh on poor Ryan. I’m really sorry, buddy.
@1ofUs I hope they do!
I think you mean unironically celebrate...
@Joekun Isn't that statement on its own you whining? I believe it is because you're bringing up something you don't like that seems menial.
@Burning_Spear You're losing it worse than anyone has over the Mario limited time deal.
In the end it was a very profitable business decision, I don't think anyone can deny that but it was still a very predatory like move since considering the end product we did get, wouldn't of got nearly that amount of sales that quickly, and they're definitely gonna get a boost the last couple days this month And they know it.
Regardless whether or not they plan on re-releasing the games separately after this, it's still very anti consumer especially when we don't know if they'll even do the separate releases. 3D all stars wasn't some special collector's edition that had a bunch of expensive extras added that warranted a limited run, it was a standard release title would of normally been the cheaper option between a real limited collectors edition that would continue to sell for years after the limited edition stopped, which any other time is exactly what they would of done like any of their other big sellers even if there wasn't a premium edition. Plus It's 3D All Stars, not some niche title that would struggle selling, that's why a lot of people have criticized this move and rightfully so.
@FargusPelagius dress it up however you like but it's still rubbish
@Paraka this isn't the same as those though is it? Could you imagine Sony releasing the Uncharted Collection for just 6 months or Xbox with the Master Chief Collection?
Get it over with so they can announce a similar plan for Zelda's 35th anniversary.
Everyone complains when it’s a lazy port not a full remaster.. everyone complains about the price for three old games.. everyone complains about that it’s a time limited release.. everyone complains about mario galaxy 2 not being included. And I’m just happy here playing through three astounding games for which there are going to be millions in resale market.
@Clyde_Radcliffe True, but it still has Super Mario Brothers in the name though. Lol
@doctorhino Perhaps, you can see it that way if you choose. For me, saying that you don’t like something doesn’t necessarily equate to whining. But when it drags on and on for months and months across news story after news story it becomes tedious. The point has been made. And my point has been made very clearly as well, I can’t wait for this to pass. I don’t intend to keep posting about it in every new story either.
@carlos82 - So digital games are different from... Digital games? May need to elaborate on that.
And you cannot make that comparison, cause they can easily done the same. Just like how licensing agreements kill games off digital shelves without warning. They got a choice in the matter and they choose to end them. You have a choice in the same matter and decide whether or not to invest in the game within that time.
Now, if you're so adamant over protecting those who you don't know who may or may not maybe get a Switch eventually kinda sorta probably, I have a question for you;
Why have you not taken up personally and buy the games for them? If not, why not buy them prematurely and hold them til they can buy them off you? And if you're not willing, why fight for someone who, by this extent, isn't concerned to buy a Switch over this? Seems like wasting your energy over people who don't care much about your own stance.
You know what's funny? Today I saw a big pile of 3D All-stars in a local electronics shop, almost 30% off from eShop price. I doubt they will pack up and send back or destroy stock after March ends. Maybe they will even put it on clearance?
Perks of living in a country with very little Mario nostalgia. Basically anything not 8-bit is virtually unknown here.
@carlos82 i actually think it's more old fashioned than rubbish. At least it makes the 35th anniversary unique. The 30th was 8 bit amiibo Mario and Super Mario Maker (which i ironically got despite hating Mario). How many of you Mario fans got that one? Not more than 4 million.
The 40th will be another big one. So yeah, dressing it up, it still seems perfectly fine.
@Pojos98 its the principle it sets, nintendo has already gotten comfortable doing it with games like jumprope bunny and fire emblem, using FOMO tactic to pressure people to get games early that honestly shouldnt be limited edition. its anti consumer, its more about the company trying to rake in as much money from mediocre releases, than giving fans the choice to buy these games on a later date
and its already starting to become the new normal with people in the comments telling others to get over it
Imagine if skyward sword hd was limited
If that isn't Nintendo slapping us in the face I don't know what is.
Rather sickening that people are defending Nintendo for this.
"Everyone that wanted the game has it by now"
Yeah... no, not everyone can afford the full price of games all willy nilly. Even more so given the situation in the world at the moment.
Loosing jobs, homes.. But hey, gotta prioritise that limited game! More important then food! Imagine being a parent with kids that want this game and this is how Nintendo treats them..
@Nymos
Ah. Yes. The 80 million Switch sold in four years with software sales of 500+ million are definitely due to being kings of bad business decisions.
Sounds about right.
edit: Forgot about being on top of the US and Japan charts both for record times in both software and hardware. So bad at business.
@Pojos98 yeah people just like to moan
It’s been out ages and it’s been well stocked so anyone who wanted it has had time.
@Nymos Don't think they'd still be in business if they truly were...
@Timppis Aren't they also like the nr.1 richest Japanese company right now, or at least near the end of 2020?
@Joriss
One of the richest at least.
It's strange.
I do have my copies, so I'm not worried from that angle.
But cutting future switch owners out is odd; these things print money.
Perhaps they'll be available piecemeal in the future?
Good to see them honouring their word. Sick of people "retiring" or playing their "last ever tour", then a year later they're back.
Gosh dang there are some fanboys in here. I don't understand how people can be supporting this clearly anti-consumer move.
Don't worry, you can still grab those games elsewhere...and with more features.
@Brutchie-bear I still enjoy the games you cant get anywhere else like Mario and Zelda. But beyond that content is always cheaper on other systems. I mean they screwed over the entire Youtube community with their anti consumer and anti streamer policies.
@boxyguy this is largely how i feel about the situation. i can understand having a limited physical release as a bonus for the anniversary but am very much not a fan of the idea of delisting the digital version and am hoping it doesnt become a common practice.
The potential of games being delisted is one of the unfortunate downsides of digital gaming, though when it does happen its often done because of unfortunate circumstances such as licensing disputes and the publisher often has little choice (such as what happened with the original scott pilgrim release) which is why its frustrating to see it used as a marketing gimmick.
i do feel like people who disagree with those criticizing the idea would do better giving a reason why they feel like this is a positive move rather than simply dismissing things as "whining" .even the "im fine with it but i can see how others arent" would be fine.
also someone who isnt a fan of the idea doesn't automatically mean they think its some kind of crime against humanity. people can simply not like something and feel its a bad idea, and as long as they arent hurling abuse at some unfortunate pr member then its fine to be critical of something even if its something you enjoy.
maybe the games will be made available to purchase separately but the only thing people have to go by is what nintendo themselves say.
