"It's time to save Bilgewater, Captain." Honestly, with a name like Bilgewater, we feel like the town might be pre-destined to suffer — but in Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, a spin-off from the mightily popular MOBA League of Legends, that's your task.
Announced as a surprise release on Switch today, Ruined King is a turn-based single-player RPG that was originally slated for early 2021.
The game will immerse players in the lore of LoL, allowing them to explore Runeterra through Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles. With the addition of the Lane Initiative combat system, players will be able to strategise their approach to battles, and configure their party and abilities to suit each fight.
With the surprise launch also comes a new video, which shows some of the process it took to create the game:
There are some launch goodies and DLC packs, too. Purchase the game through the eShop before December 16th to receive a launch-exclusive weapon, Manamune, for Yasuo. There are also three DLC packs — the Ruined Skin variants for $4.99, the Lost & Found weapon pack for $4.99, and the Ruination Starter Pack for $2.99, which includes a bunch of potions, a 10% bonus gold accessory, and a trinket that grants 10% bonus XP.

The game costs $29.99 and needs 9.9GB of space to install.

I'm not a fan of league of legends nor of riot games (which is a tencent company) but i love everything from airship symdicate... the only question i have, is a physical version coming too?
I'll be downloading this. It's been on my watch list for a while now!
Is this a good jumping-in point for the LoL universe? I've bounced off of their card based battlers on mobile and PC. But single-player campaign is more my jam. Hoping the story won't be lost on me.
League of legends is a MMORPG? That's news to me
Always thought it was a MOBA
Do I need to play LoL to understand this game? ._.
Been playing LoL since it’s release with beta testing 2009! These different genre games with LoL characters we’ve come to love is refreshing! With Arcane on Netflix! Riot is spreading early holiday surprises for fans! Woot woot Rito
It actually looks pretty good!
@lokozar I suspect this may be an entry point for many of us who haven't played the other games in this universe, so probably not. It might make references to things we're not fully in the know about but doubtful that it's a requirement. I'm going to pick it up at some point this week and see if it clicks. I love this universe, I have just always struggled with MOBAs. Their card-based battler Legends of Runeterra is also something I'm interested in but have bounced off of a few times. Maybe third time's the charm and this will fit.
Was hoping it took the Diablo approach but okay.
@jojobar Tencent owns everything now. If you are chinaphobe, which is totally understandable, gaming might not be a desireble thing anymore.
Really excited for this, I loved Battle Chasers. The price point, while nice, makes me worried it's really short though. I'll wait for a review to see about length.
@thiz-
I would not say I'm chinaphobe more that I try to not support big companies who have bad business practices (doesn't matter from which country) and also i try to not support country governments with almost no human rights. the people living there i have zero problem with .
But we all know its impossible to do that completely .
It looks really good actually. And its from the same devs behind battle chasers, which had a great artstyle. I want to see more of this actually.
@iLikeUrAttitude You should also check out the excellent Darksiders: Genesis from these developers while you are at it!!
I have backlog that is pretty unbecoming of how I usually do things, so this being digital only for now means I will wait.
Fingers crossed for a physical down the line!
I was thinking this looks just like Battle chasers and then there he is Joe mad now makes more cense now
Will get if on cartridge
or big discount on download
MF, Illaoi, and Pyke I understand. But what are Braum, Yasuo, and Ahri doing there? Shouldn't Yorick be featured?
@Aurumonado Well one of them is Yasuo. Who is basically the Charizard of League of Legends. Can't NOT slap him in the game somewhere, even if canonically he's got nothing to do with Bilgewater. (This all applies to Ahri as well. But with boobs.)
Braum is just there for some good himbo representation.
@UltimateOtaku91 Ha, oops. That's what happens when you do nothing but ACNH content for a week!
@Donutsavant I would agree except skip Darksiders Genesis on Switch as well as Battle Chasers, they don't run great and from what i know the arena bug that crashes in Darksiders Genesis hasn't been fixed making completing the additional content impossible... To sum up the ports on Switch are not great. there's annoying slowdown in Battle Chasers thats hard to ignore it freezes for long periods of time during battle sequences.
Battle Chasers is such an underrated game, if you guys haven't already done so I would highly recommend picking it up. Currently have Ruined King on the download, now I just really hope it's as entertaining as Battle Chasers is
Hmm neat, might be worth a sale pickup one day.
In other news the new Netflix LoL: Arcane is one hell of an amazing show. Jinx may be my favorite antagonist ever.
@sonicbooming Legends of Runeterra launched a fully new pve single player mode a week ago. It's damn good and really fun. Maybe you will enjoy that too.
I enjoyed Battle Chasers even with the performance issues
I played an unhealthy amount of League of Legends during my senior year of high school and first two years of college. Stopped playing a while back aside from the monthly couple of ARAMs with friends when I've exhausted other PC games.
That being said… I kind of like what they’re doing with these side games. TFT and Valorant are actually pretty neat even though I don’t play them much at all. I’d play them more if they weren’t constantly changing and adding things as I just don’t have the time to keep up with daily patch notes anymore. I’ve heard good things about Legends of Runeterra as well.
I started watching Arcane a couple nights ago and it’s surprisingly fantastic so far. I like the expanded character lore without it feeling like “League of Legends”. I’ll have to give this game a look, I suppose.
@sonicbooming check out the show on Netflix called Arcane. That's the best LoL starting point from a Lore perspective.
I enjoyed both BattleChasers and Darksiders Genesis on switch (don't remember any significant performance issues). Definitely interested, but will wait to see how it reviews.
Too busy with SMT V but I'll add it to the wish list if reviews are decent.
Just picked up both recent releases! I like Riot, but I don't play their MOBAs. I'm a solo gamer at heart, the majority of the time, so I'm excited that they've released this... with exception to Mechs vs Minions (better with a higher player count). BTW, Hextech Mayhem looks like a BLAST!
@sonicbooming
Alright, gonna keep that one in my sights.
Can't say I care for or against League Of Legends, particularly, but I checked out some game footage on Youtube. It looks like a fine turn based RPG in the style I like, and it's pirate-themed! I don't typically see pirate themed RPGs, and I'm intrigued on that aspect alone. The starting character is stylish and charming (bad pun name, though: a pirate woman named "Miss Fortune"? Really?) and I dig the flashy gun-fu she fights with.
I'm at least interested enough to wait for NL to do a proper review!
It's a shame this is turn based.
I've played some LOL back when friends would, I enjoyed the world and characters of LOL. I'd say they have strong design and lore to back them up. I love RPGs so this might be interesting for me, ready to see some of the reviews to come out for it.
@KateGray It's been almost a week, but I've been holding off on this game hoping that your site or another main stream site would review it on Switch soon. I'm assuming that NL was not given a review copy before the 'surprise' release, but I think that many of your readers would appreciate a review, so hopefully someone can find the time soon.
I've been thinking about playing League of Legends ever after watching Arcane. I was so captivated by the series and wanted to know this universe more and more. This LOL Story is an opportunity for me since I love Nintendo Switch. Not sure if https://lol-script.com I planned to use would fit for this game, but I'm going to try. I love RPG games, and this might be fun to play! I'm really waiting for some reviews or twitch streams to come out. Does anybody know how much it will cost?
