We've all been hit hard by the recent news that the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be delayed to Spring 2023. It's a necessary move, of course, to ensure that the game will be the best it can possibly be (don't say the Miyamoto quote!), but we can't hide the fact that we're a tad disappointed.
Thankfully, developer Tiny Roar and publisher Assemble Entertainment will be easing our pain slightly with the release of XEL this summer, a sci-fi action adventure that's billed as a "love letter to classic Zelda titles".
The game will star Reid, an amnesiac who winds up shipwrecked on a mysterious planet with no memory of who she is or where she came from. She'll need to traverse the dangerous land, meet a cast of charming characters, pillage dungeons, and gain items that will help her jump through time and space itself.
Here are a few key features from Assemble Entertainment:
Old School Meets New School: Retro meets modern in a classic top-down 3D action-adventure featuring a well-crafted and fun combat system comprised of, dodging, parrying, and clever gadgets
Adventure Through Space and Time: Explore the mysterious world of XEL and uncover its dark past, utilizing mind-bending time travel to unlock the secrets of the mysterious land whilst mastering the many challenging dungeons waiting to be explored
A Timeless Audiovisual Experience: Composed by Gidon Wolff, XEL offers a timeless soundtrack complemented by vibrant visuals, handcrafted by a passionate indie team
With its top-down gameplay reminiscent of games like A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds, this one might well be worth keeping an eye on as we get closer to summer. We'll be sure to provide an update once a firm release date it set.
Will you be traveling through time with XEL this summer? Let us know with a comment in the usual place.

I'm not entirely convinced looking at the trailer. I want this to be a good game, but I feel that it won't exactly be what I'm hoping for.
Reminds me of Hob, another zelda-like.
@Royalblues I believe it's essentially a timed-exclusive, so it will launch on other platforms at a later date. Exact timings are up in the air, though.
Unconvincing. Looks like a high quality Game Jam game but nothing more than that. Might pick it up if it's under £10 and I've nothing in the backlog.
An homage to classic Zelda that isn’t bland pixel art?! Nice!!
Looks cool, I eagerly await more info!
Currently playing Tunic and Unsighted, not long after finishing Death's Door. Fantastic games all of them, and this one looks pretty good too. What a time to be a Zelda-like fan!
PS: Btw, still waiting for Baldo to get a big update that solves most of its technical issues. Darn, that game looked so good...
Looks interesting, but I'm more than likely going to wait for reviews before purchasing.
I want to like it, but that trailer really put me off. I didn't like the art style, the camera setup, or really anything about it. I hope it hits the spot for others, though.
Looks nice, I will definitely check it out.
Zelda has been getting a lot of love letters lately. Hopefully Link isn't the jealous type. This one looks like it has potential to me. Time will tell.
Take my money!
