Re: Editorial: Is This a Golden Era of Gaming? Absolutely

MasterWario

More like this is just a great year for gaming, with all these good games coming out.

Are games more accessible than they've ever been? Yes. But chances are they'll continue to become more accessible in the coming years. A good time to be a gamer, yes, but I've been going back to my retro games a lot more lately; not to mention, getting retro consoles and games are getting harder more expensive.

I'd also say a golden age can't be in full force until companies either drop VR or start making huge AAA games for them. Right now it's just a weird experiment that's taking up time and money.

Re: Sonic Mania’s Reception Will Determine the Direction of the Series

MasterWario

This sounds like the same problem I would guess for F-Zero. There are die-hard fans, but the companies don't think the market would take it well. You would think when companies make enough money, they wouldn't worry about producing a niche game every once and a while.

I've only played a handful of Sonic games in my life, but Sonic Mania looks pretty good; might get it. Let's see those reviews first though.

Re: FUZE Code Studio for Switch To Nurture Next Wave Of Bedroom Coders

MasterWario

If it's actually a viable language, this seems pretty cool. However, you could do a lot with Small Basic so I guess I wouldn't have to worry too much. I can only imagine being able to code with the Switch's peripherals...ohhhhhh.

@Anti-Matter It's a tool that you can use to make games, interactive stories, or whatever, really. There'll be some limitations, surely, but other than that you can make whatever you want. You could make a calculator, a random number generator, a timer, etc.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo Went Its Own Way at E3 2017, and It Mostly Worked

MasterWario

Yeah there weren't any new announcements that tickled my fancy, but I can't deny that they showed some great games and the footage from treehouse really gave me a sense of what the games are about, something that can't usually be done in a short trailer. So a solid E3; could be better, but it almost always can.

But man everytime I see Prime 4 I just see Pikmin 4!

Re: Video: Get a Good Look at Hey! Pikmin in this Overview Trailer

MasterWario

This game looks pretty decent now with this trailer. I always get excited when I see a game's world map. There appears to be about 135 treasures, which, if there is one treasure per level that's 135 levels, or if the dots on the world map levels mean one treasure that's about 50 levels. 135 would be insane, but 50 sounds about right.

@clvr At the part where the trailer shows the onion, there are white are purple colors on it so these Pikmin should make an appearance.

Re: Random: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Patch Removes Offensive "Bras d'honneur" Gesture

MasterWario

It's Nintendo's game so they can change what they want? I don't get the problem, but when these articles come up I rarely do.

It's like if Nintendo released a game with a Jiggypuff sprite...but they didn't like it (because they thought it was ugly), so after the game was released they patched it with a different Jiggypuff sprite. They made the original sprite, and they decided the sprite should be different. This stuff happens in development all the time I'm sure, but you can't get mad at it because you haven't seen it.

Re: Meet The Mario Maker Player Nintendo Wants To Ban For Keeping The Game Alive

MasterWario

@Galenmereth I'm no expert but I'll take a shot at it:
Nintendo said they would update the game. It's not a matter of "games need X number of updates" so much as it is "if you gave us one update why not give us more?" People know Nintendo can add stuff, and they added some cool stuff, so why don't they also add X, Y, Z? Mario has also been around for a while. People see what Nintendo has done with previous games in the franchise and want to make levels just like Nintendo. Well they might not be able to, because the feature is not in the editor. This point is a bit unfair to Nintendo since there's way too many features across the franchise to add in one $60 game; they had to draw the line somewhere, and clearly people are upset about it.

The other thing is this "game" is basically a level editor, a tool. And one thing I've noticed (maybe others have too) is that whenever you release a tool that doesn't give you access to the source code, people complain about adding more to the tool, because no matter how much you want X in your level, you can't have it unless the maker's of the tool decide to add it in.

Re: Meet The Mario Maker Player Nintendo Wants To Ban For Keeping The Game Alive

MasterWario

I totally understand Nintendo's approach on this. However, the Pink Coin glitch and the fact that Nintendo deleted one of my levels just leaves a sour taste in my mouth with my whole Mario Maker experience. So I understand the other side of it too.

Nintendo did a great job with Mario Maker, they really did. But when they announced updates, people expected slopes, vertical levels, or at least fixing Piranha Plants (I've heard it's fixed on the 3DS for some reason though)! I'm quite glad they added Bumpers and Skewers and Keys and Pink Coins (even if they're busted!!!), but they weren't what people felt was a priority, except the keys on enemies, though, that was much needed. I don't think it's entitlement as much as it is disappointment. Little Big Planet 2 has everything I'd want in an editor, so I wanted the same for Mario Maker. Of course it did take the LBP a sequel, so here's hoping for a sequel for Mario Maker.

This paragraph is kinda all over the place, but as is apparent, I have mixed feelings.

Re: Bandai Namco Files a Patent for Pac-Man Maker

MasterWario

@Joeynator3000 Modding the caves in Pikmin 2 seem fairly easy (relatively), but of course Nintendo doesn't allow you to mod their games and it would never be official like Super Mario Maker is. I was hoping they'd add a cave maker into the main series, but with Pikmin 3 they moved away from the whole cave idea. It really feels like the caves in Pikmin 2 were a unique decision of the times; many of the floors were randomly generated, and that hardly seems like a system Nintendo would use now. With the shift to HD, everything in Pikmin seems much more carefully planned and designed; something hard to fit into a cave editor. TL;DR Nintendo probably won't make a Pikmin maker because Pikmin as a series has shifted away from that design philosophy.

But, I guess we'll see what Pikmin 4 brings. A cave builder would sure be exciting though.

There was some indie project for a Dungeon Maker that would mimic Zelda style, but who knows if the project fell through or what the progress is. I always forget its name.

Re: Round Up: Yooka-Laylee's Scores Are In, And Critics Appear Divided

MasterWario

@Tempestryke One of these days? Are you kidding? I like games with 6-8 scores; I've played Steel Diver: Sub Wars, Ant Nation, Equilibrio, etc. and really enjoyed those games (Sub Wars is one of my favorite games of all time).

To say that my point is nonsense severely undercuts your credibility. I'm not saying games 6-8 are unplayable garbage, but rather that they have to compete with games that score 9 or 10, and so seeing a 6 is quite disappointing. If everyone had unlimited time and money, then sure, I'll play every 6, 5, and even 4 game in existence. However, the whole point of a review is to give gamers an idea of what to spend their limited time and money on.

So if you can live with the problems the reviewer mentioned, then yeah, get the game. But, if another game you've been eyeing came out with less problems and more of what you were looking for; well, you might just go with that one instead.

Re: Fresh Data Shows That Four Out Of Five Pokémon GO Players Have Given Up Hunting

MasterWario

I think I will still fire it up if gen 3 rolls around, but I stopped playing because I couldn't find Pokemon in the woods, i.e. the wild, and only in towns and cities. As much as I understand why, it's just not in the spirit of Pokemon for me. If I find a real life cave I want to find some cave Pokemon. If I find an abandoned house I want to find some ghost Pokemon. The way things are, you can't even search for a particular Pokemon type, you just have to get lucky.

Re: Round Up: Yooka-Laylee's Scores Are In, And Critics Appear Divided

MasterWario

For the people wondering why other people think 6/7 is a bad game...

It's a relative thing, right? I mean yeah, I'm sure if Yooka-Laylee was the only game you had, a 6 would be fine. However, now compare it to Breath of the Wild with many 10s and 9s. What's more worth your time? Just going off the scores BotW is 35% better.

I'm not trying to pass judgement on either of those two games, but the point is a 6 is bad because, while the game is fine, there are many more games in the 10, 9, 8 and even 7 range that would be, theoretically, more worth your time.

tl;dr A 6 is a bad score even if it doesn't mean the game is bad.

Re: Editorial: After The Bold Brilliance Of Breath Of The Wild, Where Can Zelda Go Next?

MasterWario

@Minotaurgamer I see. Very interesting, thank you for sharing. Game designers have problems, sometimes big problems, just like the rest of us.

I understand your points, but a few like about WW is really just an opinion. If you liked those dumb pirates and sailing around in a big ocean then you'd really like the game. For reference, I haven't played MM, Hourglass, or Spirit Tracks so I wouldn't know about those. I have the unpopular opinion though that SS was very good, but the motion controls didn't bother me at all. SS's story couldn't bother me because Groose would make up for pretty much anything story wise. And the lore surrounding the game was good enough anyways.

Re: Guide: All The Shrine Locations In The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

MasterWario

@rferrari24 @roadrunner343 @AlternateButtons I haven't used the Shrine Radar at all, but I have been using the Compendium Radar, and I think it works the same. It was extremely confusing at first, but once I got the hang of it, it's very effective.

Basically, the radar gets brighter the closer you are to moving in the direction of the shine/object. so if you've got one bar it means you're headed in the general direction but not really facing the object. Three bars means you're practically facing the object, but the further away you are the more inaccurate it is. As you get closer to the object if your bars decrease, it means the object is now on your left or right. So walk to the left, if your bars go away completely, walk towards the right.

And I guess if your bars suddenly drop immediately, you legitimately just walked past what you were searching for.

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U)

MasterWario

@shani I believe it would be more a problem with the Home Menu than BotW. Yes, it's Nintendo's hardware, but the Home Menu is kind of set in stone, and I doubt they want to change the code this late in the Wii U's lifespan, lest it break other games.

I wouldn't know what exactly the problem is, but potentially: say the Home Menu demands 4 MB of memory immediately so it can open promptly. If the Wii U doesn't have 4 MB available because BotW is using it all, BotW has to release assets until 4 MB becomes available. These 4 MB could entirely break BotW's engine, so when you close the Wii U menu, BotW has to rebuild the entire engine (but like, not the game world, just the engine). There's nothing the developers could do about it, because the developers can't change how the Home Menu operates, only how BotW operates.
