Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are creeping ever closer, and are likely to be key in driving 3DS and 2DS sales into the Holiday season. The Pokémon Company, aware that time is ticking away, is gradually ramping up with details on what these new entries will bring to the Alola setting.
Fresh on YouTube now is a new trailer that showcases mostly aesthetic things - we get more looks at the overworld, hints at the mysteries to come and it also pitches new avatar customisations and the previously confirmed Rockruff evolution.
The official website and a press release also go into some high-level plot details, in addition to outlining the 'Z-Power Rings'.

In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, the story centered heavily around the Legendary Pokémon Solgaleo and Lunala. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, a new story unfolds featuring Necrozma alongside the Legendary duo.
Ominous dark clouds begin to spread and the secrets of Necrozma and the Alola region, which were never disclosed in the previous games, will finally come to light.
The main characters that appear in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon will feature brand new styles. Players can pick their appearance at the beginning of the game and choose either Rowlet, Litten or Popplio to begin their as-yet-unknown adventure in style. Also discovered in the story is a new Z-Power Ring which players will acquire in the game and can activate to use an even wider variety of Z-Moves. A physical toy of the new Z-Power Ring will be available at launch to purchase and interacts with the video games.
Are you excited about Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon?

Need this noooooow. They seem to be showing more pokémon outside of battle, which is always a good thing. New hair styles are cool but I always have a hat on anyway...
You know I'm a Pokemon fan but this game is like ... boring looking to me. My best guess it's due to the platform as the 3DS basically never existed to me since March. Already preordered but still ~snore~
Glad to see this confirms this is a brand new adventure.
I want UltraMoon.
I have Sun, so UltraMoon will be a Counterparts of the Sun.
@ZurapiiYohane You'll definitely be able to transfer them. Via trade, no Bank required (although bank would make it faster)
It's about time they actually showed something from this game. Unfortunately, this trailer didn't reveal much in the way of new content, which worries me, because I feel like if there were exciting new things about this game they would have shown them already. I'm still not entirely convinced it's worth my money or it will deliver much more beyond what Sun and Moon already did.
I just want an open world Pokémon game in which you just explore a big, open region (or all regions) with no stupid linear story (SO much text in S/M). The story in S/M was very painful to sit through and SO boring. Why so much focus on boring characters and nonsense plots? I doubt I'll bother with this version, which is sad. I used to be a huge Pokémon fan.
How low can the series can go? Looks at the trailer
We're nearing the bottom of the barrel.
At 0:10, is that Rockruff following the player, HGSS-style?
This is looking like it'll be as different as B&W 2 were which is fine by me.
My hype levels for new Pokémon games has been winding down a lot since X and Y. They're still fun games and I definitely will be getting these, but they're definitely not the hype machines they once were. Not to me at least.
....
Maybe Pokémon Switch will change that?
So much negativity huh?
"The name's Ryuki. I'm what you might call a star. You probably invented me as your OC when you were 12, but gave up because too many spikes. Well I'm back, and ready to battle."
@MrGamerClock64 Please explain. You can make a case this isn't much here to offer that Sun and Moon didn't. But bottom of the barrel?
I am just... underwhelmed. They haven't shown anything really new. Lyconroc's new form is hardly different, and the games just look like a mild update to Sun and Moon, on 3DS which just feels like such an antique now. Yes I know we've always had minor updates, Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, but from Black and white on we have either had full sequels, B2W2 or remakes ASOR...
I will still get the game, but right now all I am interested in is imagined hopes of more move tutors and a battle frontier. They've given us almost no info about the new games so far... Nothing to get me excited at all.
I have Ultra Sun on preorder, but I'm hoping there's a lot more features than that.
@thesilverbrick I don't think its all that alarming. Of course you want all the information you can get to make an informed purchase. But I also don't think its that unheard of for Nintendo and the Pokemon Company to trickle out information at a slower pace. I seem to recall that being the case in the past and feel recently they've been too forthcoming with spoilers in recent gens. Now, you can make the case this isn't a new generation and the info should just be released.
I guess if you are one that needs to know this info ahead of time for whatever reason, I can see why it would be annoyed. Chances are I will probably get one of the games. But I typically wait until the game is released anyways to make a purchase.
Sounds more and more like a standard Yellow version, but split in two so that they can make moar money. Rather than actual sequels
@UmbreonsPapa
It's pretty much the exact same game. They're milking you like heck. Sun and Moon wasn't even that good to begin with.
Ah yes, those "long-awaited" secrets of nine months ago, lol.
This looks fine though. Bit of a ripoff in that any other company would just make this DLC, but I know lots of people who will snap this up so it's all good.
@MrGamerClock64 I'm gonna wait til more info is released or until the game is actually out before writing it completely off. You can make the case that any sequel that doesn't offer much new is a ripoff. That's not making any excuses for Nintendo/Pokemon Company. It's the gaming industry. But like most things, I am willing to wait to get all the info and get some actual player feedback.
Still underwhelmed by the new content.
Granted, it's at least showed just enough to promise more will be different in future reveals. At this point I'm more frustrated with the pacing of the announcements, since we should have started off knowing this much about the game.
@UmbreonsPapa
Still, the game just looks bland and just another way to cash grab. I had high expectations for Sun and Moon, but it disappointment me. Wasn't as good as X and Y. I'll definitely pass on US and UM and just wait for the better Switch instalments. After all, they will be the first main entry game to be on a home console, so it deserves better expectations.
@GoldenGamer88 Looks a lot like what we saw with Black 2 and White 2. Nothing amazing, but a fresh new take in the same region. Personally I prefer this and Black 2 and White 2, over the not very different 3rd titles we had been seeing that were really just the same games but with a little more content. And those 3rd titles always coming out a year or so later just made the whole situation frustrating. You'd get one of the original 2 on release, then find out a year later that a better version of the game is coming out that isn't drastically different just with a little more added on content, but you were expected to pay full price for essentially the same game again. Or you could hold out when the first 2 titles release in hopes that the 3rd one would come, and try not to think about the new Pokemon adventure you're missing out on for a year or so.
So yeah, while I agree that these kinds of titles are a bit boring, I think they're a much better way to go than what we saw in the past with the third titles.
How can so many posters here say they're underwhelmed with what US/UM offer, when nobody (except for the developers ofc) knows what the games gonna offer? Weird.
I for one am hyped as always when a new mainline game is just a good 2 months from release. I thoroughly enjoyed sun (might actually be my favourite pokémon game so far) and can't wait for the next installment.
Also the one thing I would like to find out, is what awaits behind the locked side entrance at the kalos power plant. It seems they expected to release X2/Y2, but then didn't.
@Yorumi YOU...
Your comment... Its basically the same thing I was going to write.
I don't know you but every person that doesn't like sun and moon story and isn't pleased with its "postgame" deserves my love.
If there's one thing that trailer made abundantly clear, it's that they're finishing the game that Sun/Moon didn't.
What with prominently featuring Ryuki and Kahili, who didn't properly feature in the story.
I'm surprised by all the negativity towards Sun and Moon. I thought they were the best Pokemon games yet, and most people seemed to agree before and immediately after it released.
Anyways, these games do look kind of disappointing. We still don't even know if they're true sequels or not, and it seems very rushed out. I might skip these, but knowing the huge Pokemon nerd I am, I probably won't.
I don't want to write off the game just yet, but Sun and Moon were terrible, so unless I hear something amazing this will probably be my first time ever skipping a main series Pokemon game.
@Anti-Matter I have Pokémon Sun too and I can't wait to get Ultra Moon It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun
@Dogorilla I'm really hoping for that because I loved how Pokémon followed you around in HG/SS and Yellow. I don't think it is though sadly. Possibly just a cute event or something.
So, post-game story DLC being sold as a full game?
Sun/Moon were terrible and this game isn't looking better. There's only 3 months left until launch and we don't know anything exciting or new aside Lycanroc's new form (This isn't news, guys. It was pretty clear that the game would have a new <weak> story since it was announced). I really want to like Pokemon again, but they keep treating their players like dumb childs.
No changes have yet sparked my interest.
Yeah, this looks more like a third version and less like BW2, not sure how anyone can claim this game is remotely comparable. The map is a major red flag here, I cannot find any new or updated areas on this map whatsoever whereas BW2 had a slew of new areas. And that says a lot about this game. Looks like a lazy copy/paste job with a couple bells and whistles. No thanks, after BW2 showed us what games like this are really capable of I never want to play a game like this again.
@Nintendoer The best Pokemon games? I hope that you haven't played them all, because if you have, I kind of feel sorry for you (not really, it's just your taste and that's ok).
I liked the games, but once the hype died I saw all the bad things of the game. The story is a joke, Z-moves are cheap, exploration is kind of null (or should I say, Type-Null? Hurr durr) and the hand holding is incredibly annoying. Yes, they're the best looking games so far, but at the same time they are the most closed.
And yes, these are sequels, just like B2W2 and GSC/HGSS. Can't see a reason why that isn't obvious.
It's always hip to call the newest pokemon games terrible, as this comments section demonstrates.
Like the re-arranged music, but they really haven't shown anything new or worth re-purchasing. Moon's my second favorite game in the series behind White, but I skipped out on White 2 as well. The re-releases just aren't for me.
@Bolt_Strike Third version means that the story is mostly the same. This is a sequel, although it looks barebones compared to B2W2 and GSC/HGSS.
@MonkiPlays If you played moon, get ultra moon since it is supposed to be the sequel. Just like White 2 was the sequel to White. It just makes more sense this way.
@UmbreonsPapa I think what is particularly worrying to me is the fact that we got this first trailer for the game only about three months before it releases, and it showed next to nothing. If you go back a year, three months before the original Sun and Moon, we knew so much about those games before release. It seems like every week or so they had some new exciting details to share, and many of the reveals were several months in advance. The fact that they waited this long to start sharing information about Ultra Sun and Moon and the fact that this initial trailer doesn't have anything exciting tells me there is not much to reveal.
@Yorumi The game has enough RNG, adding another layer of it is unnecessary. You already have to guess the moveset, ability, EV and items of your opponent's entire team, why add this thing? How this enhances the strategy? Instead of encouraging new strategies and more diverse plays styles, you just hope that your opponent is dumb enough to reveal and waste its Z-move before you.
Your opponent is setting up because he outplayed you? No problem. You don't need to think how you can deal with it. You don't need decent team building skills or previous knowledge. No, you don't need priority, or a red card, stall it, or even roar/whirlwind, just take it out with a Z-Move. It just makes it easier for begginers, that's it. That's why this game is specifically targeted at kids.
Lame!! Bring PokeSwitch!!!
@SanderEvers
Ah, don't let it worry ya; these comments are pretty tame compared to other forums I've seen.
Considering this Pokemon generation is made for next generation of children, it would make sense to make it accessible via low difficulty, but it does deter the older fans who desire a greater challenge.
@SanderEvers If you don't get it already, then you probably need more time to broaden your tastes. I mean, I liked the movie "the cat in the hat" when I was a child. Now I understand why everyone was saying it was garbage. Just be patient.
Yes, this are the best looking pokemon games, but they are extremely mind numbing. They hand hold you the ENTIRE game. The map is so small that you can see everything within minutes. You don't feel any progress because the game is easy from the beggining to the end. The story is predictable since the start and the new mechanics aren't that interesting.
Yes, as crazy as it may seem, people have different tastes. Keep it up, maybe someday you understand that even if people like Nintendo, it doesn't mean that they like every Nintendo game.
If this makes you feel better, I'm positive that people here hope for the best experiences. Sun/Moon just don't deliver.
@EdFairway RBG and GSC were designed for children and they are challenging, fun and let you play at your own pace. Nowadays, Gamefreak thinks that kids aren't able to figure out how to play a game without making the entire game a tutorial.
@Devlind
Ah... pardon me ?
Sorry to interrupt but... like you said, targeted at kids, is that wrong ?
I know it will be easier by using Z-moves for all occasions but you can't blame for the game that designed for kids. Are you expecting a very complicated Pokemon games even kids unable to understand and beat any battles ?
@Devlind
My mistake there
I was excited for these games initially, but my hype levels are dropping fast. So far, they are not looking that different from Sun and Moon. The Alolan map in this trailer didn't appear to show many changes from the S&M map, and we haven't seen any new Pokemon except for a Lycanroc forme that's only available for a limited time.
If they want to get me excited for Ultra S&M again, then they're going to have to showcase some new areas, have more story details, and show off new Pokemon forms (Alolan forms for a selection of Pokemon from all previous generations instead of focusing on one generation would be fantastic).
@Anti-Matter You misunderstood me. It isn't wrong that it is targeted at kids. The very first games were too. The problem here is that they're trying to make it easier and easier each generation. Why? I'm not entirely sure, but my best bet is to compete with mobile games for attention.
@Devlind It's not easier than X&Y.
I just hope they changed the leveling system because trying to level anything beyond 50, its almost impossible.
And please bring back the restaurant/cafe/secret bases/whatever new so I can level swathes of pokemon quicker. Really leveling should not be something that hard.
Can't wait to play this game.
@Yorumi I didn't said they were RNG directly, just said the game had enough of it, but I can see why you would think that I implied it. I'm sorry. EDIT: My bad, I see what you mean. I didn't only implied, I said it directly. Sorry, I didn't intended that.
What I was trying to say is that the game have more than enough random events to even add more. Even if you have previous knowledge of the meta, IMO, everything is random until you confirm it in battle.
Z-moves are a tool, just like Mega Evolutions, but they are kind of unfair. When you see that your opponent brought a mawile, you can start to think: that it is probably a mega. Depending of its teammates, you can predict the set and how to work around it. That's the game, the real deal. Playing ahead of your opponent.
Having Z-moves doesn't improve this, it just makes it harder/random. Now you don't only need to think about what item the pokemon has, but also think: does it carry a z-crystal? and if it does, is it support or offensive? and if it's one of those, which move is it going to use? It adds a lot of unnecessary complexity that only hinders prediction and encourages defensive playstyles.
I wouldn't be surprised if next generation they are tossed aside, just like Mega Evolutions.
@Paddle1 It is. I didn't evolve half of my team and still went through it without problems, even with exp. share off. Most trainers have up to 2 pokemon and the island challenges (glorified gyms) consist of the same pokemon over and over and a Totem (glorified gym leader) that you can one shot with a Z-Move...
@Devlind
Ah... I see.
Well, if I look at kids nowadays, some of them tends to give up easily for something challenging, unlike we are when we were kids. Some kids nowadays tends to play no brainer type games, sometimes make me wonder if they can engage with very complex games that requires strategy and deep thought. They care about flashy visuals more than gameplay quality.
@Kmno
Ahem... no profanities, please !
Sun and Moon were such let-downs! XY were the best games in years and they removed almost every feature from them for SM. If any gen deserves a sequel it's XY, not these lazy, last-minute, unfinished games.
0:11 POKÉMON FOLLOWING YOU AGAIN?! YESS ITS BACK FINALLY
@Devlind No, it's not a sequel no matter which way you slice it. Storyline wise, a sequel takes place after the original. This is an alternate universe, it's a different take on the same story. And gameplay wise, we can see now with this map that there's not a lot of change to the region like there was in BW2. So in no way is this experience similar to BW2 or GSCHGSS. It's looking more like Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum. No idea how anyone can possibly think otherwise with what we've just been shown.
@Devlind The difficult curve was changed to be harder. Did you use Pokémon Refresh? I definitely had much more fun with this game difficulty wise.
@Bolt_Strike Didn't they stated that this game happens some years after the events of Sun Moon and that's why some new buildings are around?
@Paddle1 Refresh was tedious. Used it a couple of times just like amie in Gen VI, but then ignored it.
Your opinion about the difficulty is really interesting to me. I've heard everything about the it except it being hard. My GF played most of the game with 4-5 Pokemon because she didn't like the ones available and she had no problem. I must add that she isn't the greatest player either.
@Yorumi While is somewhat true that we have more diversity, most of them are the ones that can really abuse Z-moves. Nothing new here, happens on every gen.
The ability to predict is the best of competitive battles, but it leaves it to a mere guess with Z-moves. There's no consistent way to predict which Pokemon has it or not since everyone can use them both offensive and defensive. Is not the same with megas because you know which pokemon can do it and play accordingly.
BTW, Z-Moves aren't balanced just because they have a trade off, everything about the game is a trade off.
But anyways, not that any of this matters at all. GameFreak has the last word. We'll see what happens with them on Gen VIII.
@CrazedCavalier Considering the hype before Sun and Moon came out, and the games prior to that were Ruby and Sapphire remakes which fans had been wanting for years and were hyped, and before that X and Y received a lot of hype as the first 3D games on a handheld system, I'd say your comment is way off the mark.
@Devlind From my playthrough of Moon version, the difficulty was all over the place. Most of the time I curb stomped everything, but I remember one area of trouble was the Lurantis trial. It didn't seem to matter that my Dartrix naturally only took 25% damage from grass type moves like Solar Blade when Lurantis could call Trumbeak that illegally knows the move Screech. Pokemon X and Y were definitely very easy even by Pokemon standards though. Still, I quite enjoyed them for the gameplay and the wealth of wild Pokemon to choose from.
Edit: I just looked up the information on the trial on Serebii, and literally everything about that trial is artificially hard. Lurantis can't have Solar Blade at that level, Castform can't have Weather Ball, and Trumbeak can't have Screech. The effective "boss" for the game uses a strategy that requires moves that simply aren't possible to recreate with the same scenario.
I've never been less excited in my life about a Pokémon game
@greengecko007 Well, now that I think about it, the difficulty of the game is linked with what pokemon you choose. If you have a balanced team, you shouldn't have any problem.
@greengecko007 X and Y were widely hated (I know because I took part in it and still think they're the worst Pokemon games), Black and White were (and still are) quite divisive, Gen IV's up in the air... Gen III's got nostalgia going for it but even ORAS showed that there was "too much water". When you have a series this big, there's always going to be a vocal group who hates the newest game.
Interested? Yes. Excited? That's a tough one to gauge right now. I'm just now getting around to playing Pokemon Sun, and so far (past the railroading) I'm enjoying the game. My final judgement will be passed once I 1. finish the game, and 2. know more about Ultra Sun/Moon.
@Devlind Yeah definitely. Difficulty in Pokemon is hard to nail because it is so dependent on each player's team composition. I honestly have no problem with the series in general being easy, as it makes more Pokemon viable for in game use, which I enjoy a lot.
@CrazedCavalier Every fan is going to have their favorite and least favorite moments with the series. I don't see any evidence to X and Y being widely hated, although I'm sure there are those who didn't enjoy them for perfectly valid reasons. What I do see is evidence that with the developers trying new things, certain aspects resonate with certain fan groups. You enjoyed Sun and Moon and also Black and White? That's not surprising to me at all, because both of those games focused a lot more on story and cutscenes than most other games in the series. Whenever threads appear about favorite games in the series, I frequently see those that enjoy the 5th generation games also enjoying the 7th generation.
Meanwhile, with 5th gen and 7th gen being quite similar, it's also not surprising that both of these are my least favorite points in the series, because I do not appreciate the things they've introduced to the series.
@greengecko007 X and Y are criticized for a bloated regional pokedex (something Sun and Moon adressed by having a far smaller regional dex), the new EXP share making difficulty a cakewalk (something it took until Sun and Moon for them to address, scaling the late game accordingly and having totems be far more difficult than gym leaders), and mega evolutions being more of a popularity contest than a mechanic meant to actually balance 'mons (at least Z-moves are once-per-battle nukes you can put on whoever).
X and Y were hated after its release much like Sun and Moon are now.
I'll just point out I found X and Y to be a bit underwhelming. I didn't hate it. Just never felt the need to go back to it (lack of postgame aside).. Sun and Moon made up for that in some areas and attempted to try some new things that I appreciated. I don't think they're perfect by any means. But they're enjoyable games.
Ultimately, I'm hoping the 3DS games were just stepping stones to what they would really like to do for the Switch game (though I do hope US/UM do offer some worthwhile features and additions
@SanderEvers If all it has is a different ending, that's not really that different is it? And that's easily what the "alternate universe" could mean, an alternate universe just means that there's something different and that could mean anything from being a completely different world to an NPC standing two squares to the right. And this game is looking closer and closer to the latter, especially in terms of gameplay.
@Devlind No, that was never stated. They said that USUM is an alternate universe of SM.
Looks that nobody put the japanese version of this trailer, yeah, is almost the same, but with some differences and the title music for this versions:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWyQY_1kCMM
@SanderEvers
Well, Yes, I can´t deny how some users come to behave on this website, but not only in this site, in various webs, it's impossible to see in the section of comments the feeling of disgust, and even contempt of something; Which, it is understood, not all agree with something and want to express, it is in our right;
But really it feels very uncomfortable when you are enjoying seeing something that interests you and you see pure comments of nonconformity/hate of what one likes, and it is really difficult to have patience, and believe me, I have years being in websites where hate was The main thing...
But well, keep going forward and enjoy the good, ignore the hate and not good feelings...
...I think Pokemon is stale for me again...maybe the Switch game will be better. Then again they could be trolling us and be making a Stadium game and call that their main series instead. lol
If this has the appalling linearity and trainers only having one Pokémon to fight you with, like in Sun/Moon, then I think I'll give this one a miss. Only a sterling narrative would change my mind and it certainly isn't here.
@CrazedCavalier I've never seen anybody complain about there being too many Pokemon in X and Y, but I guess I'll take your word for it. That's one of the things I love about the game. As for the games being easy, that it totally valid, although it has nothing to do with the EXP share. The new EXP share mechanics are good, as they better allow for players to have Pokemon in their team that aren't dedicated to dealing damage. If you don't like it though, it's also optional. X and Y are just easy even by Pokemon standards because Gym leaders never have more than 3 Pokemon, and even late game leaders have crappy Pokemon. Same thing with the Elite 4, which only use teams of 4 usually crap Pokemon.
You can point out flaws in any game. At the end of the day, people will have their own preferences. But if you think the majority of people hate on new Pokemon games prior to release, you're delusional. That would mean that people talk crap about games and then go on to buy them anyways. What you see is definitely a case of a vocal minority.
I think I saw the Pokémon following the trainer like in gold and silver! Probably best not to get my hopes up.
A new mode in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon:
"Alola Photo Club"
A video about this:
I LOVE IT!!!!
@Paddle1 negativity? Not really. Sounds more like careful pessimism to me, save for a few comments. Plus, most people can be forgiven for experiencing franchise fatigue at this point. I know I am.
I would be excited if these finally had 3D in the overworld :/
I absolutely loved Pokemon Sun which I didn't expect. I love the direction it took the games and it captivated me unlike X and Y which I wanted to like so much but just didn't fully enjoy. This trailer really didn't do a good job of selling me that this game is going to be full of new content though so that was a bit of a let down.
Necrozma finaly gets the backstory he deserves.
I think there will be a Diamond remake on 3DS then hopefully the newest adventure on the switch, we all know how Slow game freak and the pokemon company are to adapt to new nintendo Tech.
X and Y didnt come out on the 3DS until what? 3 years
I would SO love to have a new, modern Pokémon Stadium for the Switch. Just like Pokémon Showdown (as in being able to build teams out of all available Pokémon, including choosing movesets, abilities, natures, IV's, EV's and items but with nice graphics), with casual and ranked online matches in different formats and include tutorials (like a rules compendium) for newer and experienced players alike. They could add challenge modes vs the AI and themed battles against known trainers from the series and the option to unlock outfits for your trainer, shiny forms of your Pokémon and trophies including trivia from the games and anime (like in Smash Bros). Add in local multiplayer and you got one hell of a game that the fanbase would love, would probably sell well if marketed right (for example host tournaments with prizes and publicity) and that I'd play forever.
@Kirbyfan And still no sign of one for Zygarde.
Ahem.
That is all.
@SanderEvers
I've found that blocking just a few posters can totally change your enjoyment of the comments section. Hope you stick around. 🤗
@G_M Actually I kinda agree with them right now with this unveiling, just thought there'd be more positive comments.
I loved S/M, so the Ultra games will be must buys for me. I'm hoping for some new Alola forms and the return of the move tutor. I'm not too bothered by the "samey" feel. The second version Pokemon titles usually don't have drastic changes, and I enjoyed the Alola region so that's cool.
@Bolt_Strike we kinda got one in the anime. Would still like to see an in-game one though.
I feel like there were areas in the game (the top right corner of sea folk village for example) that were under construction and looked unfinished. Can't wait to see them implemented!
