Re: Why Does Nintendo Use Friend Codes Instead Of Screen Names? Leaked Documents Reveal All

MJL

Friend codes are weird because they used to be such a pain back in the Wii days, but the rise of smartphones with good cameras and the ability to easily send people pictures means that it’s so easy to snap a pic of your code and send it to someone, rather than typing it all out and possibly making a mistake.

I still would rather not have friend codes, but I think it’s funny that they are actually less annoying and outdated now than they were in 2007.

Re: Talking Point: Mario Kart Tour Is Certainly Dividing Opinion, But Why?

MJL

Interesting piece but it does seem to ignore that the game isn’t very fun to play at first, and needs a 1-2 hour time investment to get used to the controls to actually have fun.

Considering it’s a Mario Kart game, classically one of the easiest game series to jump into and have fun, I’m not surprised by how many people picked it up, played for 20 minutes and decided it was rubbish - I did exactly the same at first.

I’ve gotten more used to it now and had some fun with it but, I feel like Gavin is very much looking down on those not enjoying it and dismissing that there are plenty of decent reasons to believe the game isn’t very good.

Re: UK Charts: Yoshi's Crafted World Flutter Jumps Straight To Number One

MJL

Oh wow, actually quite surprised by this, I didn’t think Yoshi games had that much sway?

I picked it up on launch and I’m really enjoying it, but I’m also a big Nintendo fan commenting on a Nintendo website so didn’t expect this to do as well with the general public!

Think I need to get my head out of the WiiU days - it’s so nice to see Nintendo games and consoles doing so well!

Re: Ubisoft Says Reggie Fils-Aimé Is To Thank For Star Fox's Inclusion In Starlink: Battle For Atlas

MJL

'He invited the developers to present the game to Shigeru Miyamoto and Star Fox's development team and this meeting led to the collaboration.'

This is an interesting one, who is the Star Fox development team these days? Retro, as rumoured, or just EAD members who have previously worked on Star Fox? Or maybe Nintendo has another Star Fox game in development internally?

Almost certainly reading too much into this, but still. Wouldn't blink an eye if an interview mentioned the Zelda or Mario development teams because your always certain theres a new game in development for those series, but Star Fox can disappear for years at a time.

Re: Hands On: Revisiting Kanto With Pokémon: Let’s Go! Pikachu And Let’s Go! Eevee On Switch

MJL

'it’s hard to see how a reskinned Game Boy game is worth the price of a modern console game.'
I'm so confused by this take - the entire game has been rebuilt in a 3D engine, with all the modern features and in HD. Have you tried playing Pokemon Yellow recently? It's nostalgic but it has aged terribly, with the inventory system being nearly unusable.

I don't know, it's just so weird to call a full 3D, HD remake of a Gameboy game a reskin. I guess Samus Returns shouldn't have been a full priced 3DS game either?

Re: Switch Set To Overtake Wii U In Japan After Less Than A Year On Sale

MJL

It's on track to do the same in the UK as well, had sold about 300K units at the beginning of October (this is GFK so not even including Nintendo's online store sales). WiiU never sold more than 390K. Would not be even slightly suprised if Switch overtakes WiiU's lifetime sales in the UK by Christmas

Re: FIFA 18 on Nintendo Switch Accounts for a Tiny Percentage of UK Launch Sales

MJL

Switch did ~7,000 units compared to a total of ~890,000, which is pretty horrendous. With about 300,000 units of Switch sold in the U.K. that's an attach rate of 2.3%

I bought the game digitally, which isn't tracked by GFK, but I doubt it would have fared much better there unless Switch has a particularly high digital split.

Disappointing, as while I still think EA will release FIFA 19 on Switch, it probably means the Switch team will get less resources than they'd hope for
