I know I'm being super pernickety here but this looks like it's based on the 2015 Danger Mouse reboot series, rather than the original 80s one. That sounds like Alexander Armstrong's voice, the logo is the modern one, and the art style is basically bang on the new version.
@Solid_Python Everything we've heard so far on the grapevine suggests that even the big third parties who were able to get games on Switch 2 at launch have only had dev kits for a few months - it's part of why pretty much every third-party offering was a port.
If these places had had dev kits for years, I'd get your concern, but it seems like that isn't the case. Everyone is extremely keen to get their games on Switch 2, it just seems like it's not easy at the moment.
Please don’t get me wrong, I will 3-star every GP! But I can’t imagine robbing myself of the joy of running through all the GPs when cracking open a brand new Mario Kart.
The way I do it - play every GP once, regardless of result, so I get to experience all the tracks and visuals and everything else. Then start from the first GP again and meticulously work my way through each one.
I basically do exactly what you described, but I’ll let myself have fun with all the courses once before that.
This review really highlights something that I’ve long battled with regarding game reviews, which is consumer-focused reviews vs content-focused reviews.
Because standalone, this reads as basically the definitive version of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. Everything from the original game plus a touch more. Which when taken without context, should warrant a pretty damn good review score.
However, the review knocks the game for not adding enough and charging too much. And for a consumer working out if it’s worth the purchase, that makes sense.
This isn’t unique to this review at all, and sometimes when researching retro titles, you see it for older games. Titles that you know are considered great, but got lower scores because of the context surrounding their release. It’s an interesting dilemma!
I adored this when it came out on Xbox last year, utterly unique, incredibly stylish, and one of the most moreish games I’ve ever played. Glad it plays well on Switch 2!
Really hope it coming to Switch 2 gets more people to play it, a criminally overlooked title.
@Zach777 While I am fully onboard with the hate for bad Switch home icons, where did you get the 35,000 number? If that's even remotely a real thing then I genuinely could use the data for my day-to-day job!
There’s so much good source material to pull from in Zelda, but I do think a LEGO Guardian from BOTW would be a great intricate build.
The King of Red Lions and Temple of Time are obvious ones as well.
Honestly, I’d take most things. I’m just happy that Nintendo has finally partnered with LEGO on proper collector-style sets aimed at adults - gives me hope for a potential Metroid set in the future.
I suffered from really, really bad performance playing this on Switch the other day - frequent slowdown, occasionally looked like a slideshow, and the entire game crashed three times.
I assumed that'd be the case on Switch everywhere but at least glad to hear that Nintendo Life had a better time with it - starting to wonder if the game's terrible performance was a bug or glitch in my case, should have maybe restarted it to see if it stopped.
Nintendo UK has been doing this at their own discretion for a while now, if you got in contact they'd normally repair or replace them even if they were out of warranty.
However, it's good that this is now an official policy that they are publicly speaking about, hopefully makes more people aware of it.
Importantly, the SNES NSO controllers are also back in stock to order, which they haven't been in over a year - just managed to order it now to complete my NSO controller collection!
This is one of those weird Nintendo decisions. Game could absolutely run in tabletop, but because it’s not the “ideal” way to play, Nintendo blocks it entirely rather than just let people work it out for themselves. Not the end of the world but also an unnecessary restriction.
This is one of the most surprising and interesting games I've played in recent years, so should be a treat for those on Switch who haven't played it. Just try to go in knowing as little about it as possible, if you can.
Yeah, this should really work on the Switch Lite, right? Just with additional Joy-Cons? Super Mario Party made it work, so it would be really disappointing if Nintendo Switch Sports didn't.
Honestly, this is an appalling decision by Nintendo. I know we've been taught to think that this sort of thing will "always happen eventually" but in a world that's going ever more digital, it really shouldn't.
Keeping these shops live would barely cost Nintendo anything in the grand scheme of things, a pittance, but instead they've chosen to basically make dozens of digital-only titles and virtual console games inaccessible.
Microsoft still has the Xbox 360 digital store open, and still runs weekly sales on it. There's no excuse for Nintendo shutting down the Wii U and 3DS eShops. Incredibly consumer unfriendly and entirely unnecessary.
What I’d give to see Metroid Prime 4 get any sort of release date. A day, a week, a month, a year, a decade. Just something to let me know when to expect it!
Hell yeah it does, loved the original game on 3DS but it’s a title that could really do with a sequel to iron out the kinks. The transfer system needs to be a tad more robust, and would be useful to have a few more in-game explanations for what stats mean and how best to customise players.
But yeah, a sequel to this game really feels like a title that could blow up much bigger on Switch than the original did on 3DS.
I wouldn't recommend anyone pick up the phone rings. As much as I loved my Hylian Shield one, the hinge on the ring became extremely loose within a few weeks, meaning it became completely useless as a phone stand. Loved it before it became loose, but was really disappointed once it did, and had to remove it just a few days ago.
Like, I know it's basically free outside of shipping, but it's just worth knowing before you buy.
Desperately want this to be localised but you’d think they would have announced it by now. I’m sure Square Enix wants Dragon Quest to be bigger in the west but it really needs to go all in, and treat every game like a global release.
Not sure if Dread outselling multiplat newcomer Back 4 Blood means Metroid had a good week, or B4B had a bad week. And then you've got to consider the fact its on game pass!
Still, its great seeing Metroid sticking near the top of the charts and competing with the likes of FIFA and Far Cry!
I was shocked at how high the price is, but I’m a sucker and I’ll end up paying it anyway. Still think Nintendo messed up though, the high price will end up putting far more people off from upgrading. Should have made it a $10 a year increase, the kind where it’s just low enough that it’s almost a no-brainer, and I reckon they’d have ended up making more money.
Apart from the lack of analogue triggers, I think the Switch Pro Controller is one of the best feeling controllers ever made, and a perfect size for me. But this seems like a really good third-party option for those with smaller hands!
1, 2 and Before the Storm are coming to Switch later this year, according to people in the know. Likely to be announced in a Nintendo event rather than a Square one. Would love the new game to come as well, but it sounds like that’s not on the cards right now at least
Wait wait wait, do people not like the art style? I love the weird monty python style animation, thought it looked brill when I saw the trailer and hadn’t been paying attention since. What do people dislike about it?
Bayonetta 3 would be a perfect game to re-reveal alongside the Nintendo Switch Pro. Any higher powered mid-gen Switch refresh is going to be aimed directly at a more hardcore audience, which is a very similar demographic to Bayonetta and PlatinumGames fans. Would not be surprised to see this, a Zelda BOTW sequel re-reveal, Nintendo Switch Pro announcement and perhaps a Metroid game all in one big presentation
"Anytime soon" is actually the less interesting bit of the response. The most interesting bit is the fact that they say the focus is Mario in Feb and Monster Hunter in Mar, which suggests that "anytime soon" basically means definitely not in this financial year.
Anytime after April is fair game, although my prediction is the announcement will come in May or June
Oh nice, checked my inbox, email arrived just after 4PM UK time! Didn't even realise I was subscribed to the Pokemon Trainer Club, so that's great news!
I genuinely enjoyed my time with Let's Go Pikachu. Even as a more hardcore Pokémon fan, there was something nice about revisiting Kanto.
And, as the first mainline game to put wild Pokemon on the overworld and have 3D pokemon following you, it was actually groundbreaking in a few ways, even if it felt a bit basic or stripped back in others. Fun to play in co-op with my partner as well, since she likes catching Pokemon but isn't very into the battling - this was way more fun for her.
I mean, she should probably have a Scottish or Geordie/Cumbrian accent rather than Received Pronunciation based on her location in Galar, but oh well!
And yeah, while its a very English accent, it at least sounds like an English voice actor. You can normally tell when it's an American VA doing a "British accent" and this doesn't sound like that thank god.
prepares to be immediately proved wrong when an American actress is announced to have done the voice!
Firstly, let me say how pleasantly surprised I am to see the review is from Kate Gray! Followed her writing and work since the ONM days, and its always a pleasure to read, and this is no different!
From the brief bit of time I spent with the cloud version of the game in the 10 minute streaming test, I thought it actually ran really well. I love Control, it's a phenomenal game, but it really struggles to run on even a base Xbox One, so it's super impressive seeing quite how good it looks on Switch. Great review!
Honestly, if EA put out a feature complete FIFA on Switch, I'd buy it over the PS4 version - portability would suit the way I play FIFA completely.
As it stands, the Switch version is just so lazy, literally the same game released with kit updates. It's annoying because this year's FIFA 21 on Xbox/PS4 is so good - a huge improvement over FIFA 20, Career Mode finally got some love, the game plays so much better.
As it stands, there is just zero reason to buy FIFA 21 on Switch, especially if you've already bought one of the previous year's ones. Sort it out EA.
Been thinking about picking this up and wasn't sure whether to go Switch or PS4 - glad to hear it runs well on Switch, think I'll get it there for some handheld puzzling this weekend!
Know someone who works at LEGO so I’ve asked them to pick one up for me, the 50% discount makes this a no-brainer at £105! Can’t wait to put it together
How do the visuals hold up compared to the original release? I’ve no issue if they are blurry compared to the Xbox One and PS4 versions, but I’d hope that the Switch one would look at least as good as the original Xbox 360 and PS3 release
Watching this evolve from Twitter joke to actual game was amazing. Developed by Dan Marshall, who did The Swindle and the Ben & Dan games. Definitely picking this up next week
