Re: UK Charts: Fire Emblem Engage Tumbles Down To Seventh Place

Kogorn733

Sadly, I'm not surprised. What captured people w/three houses were the deep characters (most of them at least) and their development over the course of the game against the backdrop of a deep story. Many people likely went in to Engage expecting the same, when in fact all those things have been turned down in favor of the combat (which to be fair, put fire emblem on the map back in the day, but doesn't have as broad appeal).

Without the deep characters/story, it's very easy to get battle burnout from the repetitiveness and have to take a step back from the game, something people may have shared with friends who were also thinking of getting the game.

Don't get me wrong, I like Engage, and I still plan to finish it, but it just doesn't capture the same level of magic that Three Houses did.

Re: Feature: Resident Evil Netflix Review: Wesker Steals A Show That Lacks Bite

Kogorn733

I'm so tired of directors working on movies based on video games taking things in an "artsy" direction and trying to explore new plot points/stories in the universe rather than simply following the games themselves. Just make movies that follow the actual games people love for crying out loud.

Same reason the DC Cinematic Universe has failed to pick up as much traction/popularity as the MCU. Directors trying too hard to be original rather than focusing on the aspects of the characters/stories that people love.

Re: Nintendo Applies For Metroid: Other M And Super Mario Galaxy Smartphone-Related Trademarks

Kogorn733

I practice trademark law for a living and can tell you that the fact the application includes "smartphones" in the identification of goods is not necessarily a sign that Nintendo will be putting its next game in the series on smartphones.

When you obtain a trademark registration, you are limited in your ability to expand the scope of your identification of goods (aka, the list of goods your registration protects). Thus, many entities, especially tech companies, will include a broader range of goods in their identification beyond what they're actually using the mark for (1) to ensure that the registration covers goods not identical, but also related to what they're actually producing; and (2) to reserve the right to use those alternative formats in the future without having to file a new application.

It does not mean, just because cell phone games appear in the ID, that the mark is definitely going to be for use in connection with cell phones games. That's reading way too much into this.

Re: Review: Octopath Traveler (Switch)

Kogorn733

So is there really no overarching story at all? Like you get the 8th character and then the game just ends abruptly without explanation?

Still planning on getting this, but that's kinda disappointing...

Re: Nintendo's Share Price Plummets In Response To E3 Direct

Kogorn733

@Candido0411

I agree. Their approach is still "here's what's coming soon, stay tuned for more", when it needs to be "here's what's coming soon, and here's plenty more to look forward to in the future!

What they really need to do is expand their ability to produce quality content faster, since not as many third party games are filling in the gaps. Other than Monolith Soft opening a new studio, we haven't heard much about expansion (other than the theme park, but that's not going to produce games).

Re: Nintendo Confirms Metroid Prime 4 Will Skip E3 2018

Kogorn733

They need more momentum, and showing games in development, even if far off, is a way to keep that going and get people more excited.

The showing soon-to-be stuff approach only works when you have so much new content coming out that you have to do that to properly pace things and keep the base focused. That is not the case here, as Nintendo's development pace is far slower than Sony or Microsoft's

Re: E3 2018: What Do You Want To See From Nintendo At E3?

Kogorn733

Nintendo needs to hit hard and fast at this E3 to keep momentum going. While we've had some releases in the early part of the year, they've had nowhere near the impact and awe that Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade 2 have had. Yes, I'm excited for the new Smash, but I feel like it's going to be an updated version of Smash WiiU/4, kind of like the Switch release of Mario Kart 8 was a slightly updated version of the Wii U version. Mere updates by themselves don't really excite me.

In addition, Nintendo should be sending the 3ds out to pasture now in favor of the switch.

Accordingly, what we REALLY NEED at this e3:
(1) Gameplay footage/release for Metroid prime 4
(2) Presentation highlighting the new and different features of the Smash Update for Switch (presumably there are some in addition to the splatoon characters). More new character announcments and a single-player campaign would be great here
(3) Gameplay footage/more information about the upcoming Pokemon Switch Game
(4) announcements/footage of upcoming "big world" games for new or existing franchises, kind of like how Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey revamped their original franchises. Nintendo has stated that the engine/tools they built for Zelda should make it easier to build games with large worlds. Accordingly, we should be seeing Kid Icarus, Donkey Kong, Star Tropics and, I dare say, Earthbound games incorporating this format along with new franchises
(4) Announcements for large, popular third party multiplayer games on Switch (Fortnite, PUBg, etc.). While I don't personally play these games, they are important in the industry for better or worse
(5) Announcements for AAA third-party games on Switch
(6) Very important--a greater overview of the upcoming online service and what makes it worth getting. What's been revealed so far is pretty laughable--those of us who grew up with Nintendo already have like 5-6 versions of NES classics, so adding them to the service isn't going to be very significant. We need more significant exclusive content/features for the service to make it worth anything.
(7) Mother 3 Localization for Switch
(8) Rune Factory 5 for Switch

What we DO NOT NEED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
(1) a presentation that focuses on anything for the 3ds. Please, it should be sent out to pasture in favor of the switch. If you are going to do 3ds announcements, do them during the trickle of new information that comes out during the TreeHouse streams, NOT during the Direct.
(2) a presentation focusing on party games (more mario sports titles, mario party, gimmick games, etc.). There are enough of these out/soon to be out for the switch already. Any more and the Switch will stop being taken seriously
(3) a major focus on DLC for existing games. Some is nice, sure, but as much as I love the game we do NOT need 10 minutes of the direct devoted to upcoming DLC for Xenoblade Chronicles X2
(4) "behind the scenes"/"making of the game" videos. Kind of a waste of time. They can be uploaded to the website if people want to view that stuff, but not part of the main presentation
(5) announcements of mobile titles being ported to switch or otherwise released; few gamers take these seriously. While they're nice to have out, they don't really excite the fanbase and 95% of them are vastly inferior compared to mainline console titles

Re: Nintendo Switch OS Version 3.0.0 Is Now Live

Kogorn733

Thank god the HDMI issue is fixed in this update (or at least that it contains an attempted fix). I was getting sick and tired of moving the HDMI cord around to prevent interruptions when watching TV or using a different system.

Re: Poll: Are You Excited About Nintendo at E3 2017?

Kogorn733

I'm cautiously optimistic. After the amazing E32014, followed by the horrible E3 2015 and E3 2016, I'm not sure what to expect anymore. Still, I figure they will go out guns blazing to support the switch as much as possible in this one.

Re: New Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Rewards Appear on My Nintendo in North America

Kogorn733

Compared to Club Nintendo MyNintendo has truly been pathetic. I have no problem with the system providing discounts on existing content in general (though I much rather prefer the cant-get-anywhere-else rewards club nintendo offered), but then it should be across the board in the form of spending points/discount coupons that you can apply to anything, NOT just discounts applied to specific games

Re: Reggie Explains the Reasoning Behind the New 2DS XL

Kogorn733

I love my New 3ds XL, and also have an earlier version of the 2DS (which I used before I upgraded). That being said, I think there are far too many versions of this console out there as is.

It's disappointing that Nintendo discontinued the NES mini on account of "limited resources" and then just released yet another version of the 2DS family. I don't get it. It's been years--most people who have a 2ds/3ds already have one, including kids. What could possibly be getting released that would cause anyone to buy one that doesn't already have one at this point?

Re: Poll: A Month of Nintendo Switch - Do You Think It's Heading for Success?

Kogorn733

Bought the Switch on Day 1 an love Breath of the Wild. I've also bought and enjoyed a couple of the shop/indie games (Snipperclips, BlasterMaster).

That being said, I'm a little concerned as to whether Nintendo will be able to keep the necessary momentum required to make the console a success (something the Wii U, as much as I liked it, failed to do). The mainline games coming out in the next couple months, with the exception of Arms, are enhanced ports that many people have already enjoyed earlier versions of on the Wii U, or sequels with (at least based on what has been shown thus far) minor enhancements from their predecessors. Then of course you have the summer coming, which is slow for the gaming industry generally.

Super Mario Odyssey hopefully will make its Christmas release, but the hype and enthusiasm need to be maintained until then. I'll feel considerably better about this once some of the other games with amorphous "2017" release dates are dated, and the virtual console's successor is released.

All in all, I'm cautiously optimistic, but the release could have been much better. Doesn't help that the list of third-party supporters is a little misleading

Re: Lego City Undercover Box Reveals a Mandatory 13GB Install

Kogorn733

Not sure I have a problem with this. If it's something akin to the memory packs that you could download for Xenoblade Chronicles X to speed up loading, framerates, etc., it's a good thing.

Yeah, the Xenoblade one was optional, but who did not foresee their needing to buy a micro SD card for the switch anyway?

Re: Talking Point: The DLC Expansion Pass for Zelda: Breath of the Wild is Both Surprising and Inevitable

Kogorn733

The problem I have isn't with the fact that Nintendo is having DLC for Zelda--it's (as some people have echoed here), the nature of the content. Good DLC adds some substantial, though smaller adventures and content for the player to explore that expands upon the original game. Bad DLC adds modes that should have already been in the original game, cheap cash grab cosmetic items, and gimmicky challenges.

Unfortunately, what's been announced so far suggests that the DLC, especially the first round, will primarily be the latter. T-shirts? Hard mode? this is garbage , and some of it should be in the original game. Hard modes were in the last couple Legend of Zelda titles in some way, shape, or form to begin with.

I will not be buying this DLC unless Nintendo provides more clarification as to how it would be worth anyone's money.
