Nintendo Co, Ltd. has applied for trademarks for Metroid: Other M and Super Mario Galaxy. Once again, these trademarks cover all bases - making reference to 'program for home video game machine', downloadable video game program', and 'program for smartphone'.
In recent times, Nintendo has secured trademarks for many other Wii games including The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wii Sports Resort and at the start of this month The Last Story. Super Mario Galaxy was originally released on the Wii in 2007 and Other M - developed by Team Ninja - followed in 2010.
Do you think this is business as usual for Nintendo or are you hoping it leads to something big? Tell us below.

Plans to pull in the casual crowd into the Nintendo fold?
Wishing for a Super Mario Sunshine & LoZ Skyward Sword port before these but...can't win 'em all.
Nah, I think they’re likely renewing the trademarks and keeping all doors open in the process; I just don’t see them releasing these games (or the other recently renewed games, for that matter) on smartphones, simply ‘cause I don’t think they would work.
Can't you just stop the clickbait?
the trademark is in a group of download games for devices including video game system ,pc and smartphone, not just smartphone.
@ReaderRagfish imagine playing the Luigi purple coin star on a touch screen.
I'm pretty sure "mobile" devices means something portable... Like the Switch
I'm near certain that these trademarks mean nothing (as always) and that this is simply a clickbait article, which is all too common on the site nowadays.
Meh, business as usual. Nothing to see here.
If Metroid: Other M is coming to smartphones then I want DKC 3, Link's Crossbow Training, Star Fox Zero, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, and any other average/disappointing Nintendo games.
IP trademark protection. Nothing to see here.
@subpopz I dislike when they reuse the same article because it is a pain to scroll through all the old comments to get to the new ones.
This is just renewing the trademarks, nothing more. If they don't renew them they can lose them (as far as I know, I might be wrong though, since I'm no expert)
I practice trademark law for a living and can tell you that the fact the application includes "smartphones" in the identification of goods is not necessarily a sign that Nintendo will be putting its next game in the series on smartphones.
When you obtain a trademark registration, you are limited in your ability to expand the scope of your identification of goods (aka, the list of goods your registration protects). Thus, many entities, especially tech companies, will include a broader range of goods in their identification beyond what they're actually using the mark for (1) to ensure that the registration covers goods not identical, but also related to what they're actually producing; and (2) to reserve the right to use those alternative formats in the future without having to file a new application.
It does not mean, just because cell phone games appear in the ID, that the mark is definitely going to be for use in connection with cell phones games. That's reading way too much into this.
Probably just more $60 Wii rehash for the Switch from Nintendo.
Mobile or Switch - Skip either way.
Plain Jane trademark renewal. Nintendo more than most developers understand that console games are best enjoyed on a console. Detailed games with immersive worlds like Twilight Princess deserve the big screen treatment. Mobile is not the platform for these games, and additionally, it is not in the strategy Nintendo have outlined to release full Nintendo games on mobile. They instead work to expand their userbase into the mobile market with mobile-centric versions of their IP like Super Mario Run or a mobile Zelda game, the goal being to convert mobile users who enjoy the mobile experience to take the plunge into Nintendo hardware to enjoy the full experiences like Super Mario Odyssey or Breath Of The Wild.
I hope it turns into something for the switch. But as my grandfather used to tell me as a kid, "hope in hand and s*** in another, which one fills up first?"
Just have to wait and see if anything comes of this.
It’s most likely they’re doing this to stop people from ripping off their games.
I really liked Other M. I'm disappointed we never got a follow-up.
Super Mario Galaxy remake or port would be great to see.
I would loved Galaxy on my Switch. Not on a mobile platform. It's heresy, if they do it...
Gotta do something, so far only Pokemon Go has generated serious revenue! Most of that wasn't even to Nintendo!
If all these clickbait trademark articles are to be believed. We're looking at the entire gamecube library on Smartphones.
... or, you know, they're just adding smartphone to their copyrights during routine updates to future proof them.
I could see Nintendo tarting up a few Wii classics for the Switch.
Please rerelease Xenoblade, Nintendo!
@Agramonte If these games came to Switch, especially Mario Galaxy, I'd but them in a heartbeat. I don't see how they would work on mobile however.
Maybe Smartphone Virtual Console on Smartphones but they've already got past console trademarks. This version will include Wii
@subpopz I really don’t understand why they only do this with the purchasing guides. Reposting articles can help clarify vague info and allow the reader to see a more complete version of the news.
Super Mario Galaxy for Switch would be fantastic. Of even Galaxy related DLC on Odyssey for that Matter! Not so sure about mobile though.
What a dumb article. Anyone who owns a trademark needs to renew the trademark every 6 to 10 years. Super Mario Galaxy was first registered in 2006 (see link) and, like Metroid M, was simply renewed. NL, stop with the dumb, ignorant stories that mean NOTHING. You said "applies". That is a lie. It's not applying. It's renewing. http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4803:yi6qqz.2.1
OH MA GERRRRRD MARIO GALAXY AND OTHER M CONFIRMED FOR SWITCH.
The more relevant story is 'clickbait article leads readers to believe standard copyright renewal is news worthy'
I see some ports coming
@Spectra lol if u say so
Bring them on Switch.
In fact bring the whole Nintendo library on Switch : N64, GC, Wii, Snin, Nes, Arcade, ...
It's such a perfect and lovely machine <3
Metroid Other M Mobile Phone Remaster.
Okay this is just insane.
@Heavyarms55 If the price is right, sure. My problem has always been the price point being to high.
I played RayMan HD on mobile, and it was a pain. I can't see playing Mario Galaxy on mobile. It would need controller support, and at that point - just use a Switch.
Other M . Uff what a great game.
