It's that time, dear readers, for the North American Nintendo Download Update. This week brings us more content for one of the year's best games, while the Switch eShop has two very different but tempting download titles. The 3DS has a couple of gems too, while the Wii U isn't forgotten either. Let's get to the details, shall we?
Switch and Wii U DLC
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass (Nintendo, $19.99USD) - This week sees the launch of DLC Pack 1: The Master Trials, which is only available through buying the Expansion Pass. It includes a the 45-room Trial of the Sword, the 'Hero's Path' map functionality, four new pieces of armour, the Korok Mask, and finally the more difficult 'Master Mode' for a challenging playthrough. DLC Pack 1 is available from 30th June.
Nintendo Switch eShop
GoNNER (Raw Fury, $9.99USD) - Previously released to plenty of acclaim on PC and Mac, this is a roguelike platformer consisting of ever-changing, procedurally-generated levels. It has plenty of outfits and weapons to experiment with and is pretty darn difficult, challenging players to step up their game. We gave it a recommendation in our GoNNER review.
Magical Drop II (HAMSTER, $7.99USD) - A Neo Geo-era falling object puzzler, as you'd expect your job is to match up coloured orbs and to string together combos. We'll take a fresh look, but when we reviewed it on the Wii Virtual Console we enjoyed the addictive gameplay, bright design and catchy music. As an ACA release this will also have the various filters and online leaderboard features we've come to expect.
New Nintendo 3DS eShop
6180 the moon (Turtle Cream, $3.99USD) - Previously on Wii U, this platformer sees players take control of the moon on a journey to find the sun. It uses two screens for the playing field, requiring players to look between the two as the moon bounces high and low. We loved this in our 6180 the moon Wii U review.
3DS eShop
Mighty Gunvolt Burst (Inti Creates, $9.99USD) - This adopts retro-style visuals and the action platforming puts an emphasis on getting close to enemies before attacking. This was also released on Nintendo Switch not so long ago, so you can check out our review of that version while we play through on 3DS.
3DS HOME Themes
Pokémon: Look Upon the Stars
Pokémon: Pokémon Pop
Wii U eShop
Preston Sterling (MiracleBoxGames, $3.99USD) - Also known as Preston Sterling and the Legend of Excalibur, this is a puzzle adventure game previously released on PC and smart devices. It looks relatively promising in video footage.
Wii U Virtual Console
Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure (D4 Enterprise, $5.99USD) - The Virtual Console lives on with what was the final entry in the original Bonk trilogy. A colourful and fun platformer, in our Wii Virtual Console review we have plenty of praise for this one.
Devil's Crush (D4 Enterprise, $5.99USD) - Another TurboGrafx-16 title, this time a spookily-themed pinball game that achieves its goals rather well; we had fun with it on the Wii Virtual Console.
As always Nintendo of America wants you to browse the eShop and check out the official sales and deals website for discount details.
There are some intriguing choices in this week's update - let us know what you'll be downloading in the poll and comments below.

Just the DLC for me... Looking forward to another play through on the hard mode
I hope they made the food system less overpowered for the hard mode at least
Eating during a battle is just silly, both in gameplay and rhythm...
Where is the RPG Maker FES DLC? Europe got it right away why do we gotta wait with absolutely no communication about it :/
This DLC is fine and I look forward to playing it but now I'm really curious as to what the second DLC pack with be.
Was hoping something interesting would come out before I hop on a plane next week, probably will wait on Zelda a bit until at least DLC 2 is out before playing through again. Not sure if GoNNER looks like one i'm interested in. As much as I don't really want to pay 40 bucks for I Am Setsuna may end up picking it up since I really want to play it, but was hoping to get it cheaper later.
Just Zelda DLC for me.
DLC BABY!
Looking forward to when Kirby comes out next week.
I'll buy the Zelda DLC!... Just kidding, I already own it since March. I know what I'l doing this weekend. Sometimes it's good not to have a life
Great, another game for my Neo Geo system! I'm so glad I bought the Nintendo Neo Geo . : (
If you have a Wii U or New 3DS I firmly recommend 6180 the Moon. That game is wonderful, and for the price, I don't think either eShop has anything better.
Getting just the themes. Still playing Ever Oasis plus this is the last day of school for my kids so will be busy doing stuff with them all summer.
Does "6180 The Moon" actually require a New 3DS? If so, that's at least one lost sale from me... and does not seem necessary.
Just the overpriced Zelda DLC. I've always wanted to play Bonk 3 if it still holds up. Eh, we'll see what's on sale in a couple hours.
If the DLC was available like.... i dunno a month ago I'd probs have impulse purchased it for the map tracker alone. But I have now moved on from BotW sadly. Game of the year IMO.
Just the home theme this week. Been a while since I check them out.
Devil's Crush upgrade might be for me, if it comes to Europe.
Nothing this week, I had my fill of Zelda back when it first came out. Don't feel the need to go back to it.
Zelda DLC will definitely add hours to my gameplay of fun. Although I won't get straight into it.
Those Pokémon themes look great!
Bonk 3.
It's two player bonk.
I really want it on my switch though...
Already bought my Zelda DLC. (Tingle costume, here I come!) And, wow, the Wii U VC is still getting games?
Hope theres a sort of new game plus for hard mode on Zelda. Not looking forward to certain things again (...star fragments and koroks particularly)
Have BoTW DLC already. I'll get to it soon, replaying through 3D Zeldas. Just Wind Waker HD to go, then back to BoTW for a 4th playthrough. Hope I can get through that again before Splatoon 2 drops.
Zelda DLC for me
@Smokingspoon I would think simply because the game is much more difficult, that should help balance out cooking. We'll see though.
Only the Zelda DLC for me. Want to stick to physical releases as much as possible.
Good to see the TG-16 releases are still trickling out. Nothing on the list this week for me, but finally picked up Mario vs DK GBA. So far it has been disappointing compared to the fun I had with the GB version years ago (DK '94). But at least it was something I haven't played before.
DLC and Mighty Gunvolt, although I'd like to see comparisons to the Switch version first.
I don't understand why we get Alien Crush on the Vita, but not Devil's Crush.
When purchasing the BOTW DLC, does the download automatically start when it's available? How do we obtain the content on the 30th?
Wow 11% for Gonner....idk the trailer didn't grab me 😳
Zelda DLC!! Anyone know what TIME the DLC drops? Like I am in Eastern Time zone, so will it drop at midnight for me? Or will it go by midnight Pacific time? Or noon tomorrow? I'd love to start playing it tonight.
Just the BotW DLC for me. That Korok mask is going to be VERY helpful in finding those dang seeds.
zelDAH DLC for mii, might see about something on sale if there is anything new on sale.
I cannot get enough of botw. I've played since launch and only have one divine beast left to takedown, 5 lynels, and 132 korok seeds left to find for the golden turd. I just need the lynel medal from kilton and I will finally be ready to finish my first playthrough and achieve 100 percent of everything offered in the game. This game is awesome and I will definitely speed through another playthrough on hard mode.
@Smokingspoon "OP" - overpowered? How so? Curious, cooking isn't one of my fave activities, so I always just cook up an apple and hearty truffle, and I'm set...I don't have to bother with anything else. I guess that is what you mean by overpowered?
And here I thought Mighty Gunvolt Burst was skipping the 3DS...guess I'll get that then, now that it's on a console I own!
@Lone_Beagle Exactly. Any "Hearty" item fully healing you AND adding extra hearts to your maximum health is incredibly over powered. Plus any "Endura" item fully heals your Stamina and adds extra on top of your maximun as well.
For my Hard mode run I'm just not going to use those items, lol
Seeing Bonk 3 up for Wii U really makes me want the Turbo Grafx 16 games on my Switch!
i also recommend 6180. up there with affordable space adventure in creative use of the two screens, but don't expect a long game.
Gettin Bonk and the Expansion Pass. I don't see why so many keep talking like we have to choose between the WiiU and Switch. I'm still rockin both and lovin it. Just got Mirage Sessions and Darksiders. Been playing Wonder Boy on Switch and have Zelda and Kart for both. I just need a new DS and I'll feel complete. 😎
@Linked2thaPast Does the Lynel medal come after getting the Hinox, Mulduga and Talus ones?
@Hydrus13 I too would like to know this. I have a flight in the morning and would love to have this downloaded before then.
Picking up an eshop card this weekend. Not sure what I'm buying yet.
@LiberatedAnimal @Linked2thaPast Kilton only gives medals for boss monsters - those with a health bar on top of the screen. Lynels don't count. Just moldugas, hinox, and talons.
The RPG maker fes dlc didn't release? Europe got it day one, what's going on with the na version?
@Lone_Beagle Overpowered, yes. It's because in this game there is no hearts anymore, just food, and it's so abundant! Not only that, but you can eat at any time to restore anything. You can eat during a battle, a boss, in midflight, while climbing. Having a grocery size food inventory doesn't help that!
Also, clothes can be changed at any time, which is a bit annoying as you can make yourself impervious to anything, anytime. Making the elements not very challenging, just bothersome (changing cloths every moments).
@roadrunner343 Fingers crossed! I also hope monsters with elemental weakness won't be so easy to defeat. Because I love wizrobe in that LoZ, I just wish it was a more intense battle.
@Smokingspoon the clothing problem has an easy fix imo - Link can carry one change of clothes other than what he's wearing, the rest must be kept in storage accessible from the stables. The extra change means you can prepare (Death Mountain for instance you may need the fire resistance but what if you have a harder fight that you need your best defense for?) while not being able to have clothing with you for EVERY eventuality. On top of that, change your clothes has a short animation so doing it IN battle is not usually wise.
The food seems trickier, an eating animation seems vital (but stamina recovery would be rendered useless if you can't eat while climbing or gliding), less inventory space seems like it'd be a good start, and hearty/endura foods should only function at full health/stamina (they should be buffs, not full recoveries).
@ShadJV There are many ways they could've fix it. But they're a bit lazy, if I can dare say on a nintendo fan site.
Better a.i. for monsters would be great too.. Bokoblins can't climb their own ladders or you can just stand still under a Moblin and it won't be able to do anything, for example. Golden lynels better not have that weakness anymore, once you discover it, they're not very intimidating.
I'll be honest, I found the game so easy (toward the end) that I never expanded my hearts. I played the whole game on 3 hearts. And I deactivated all magics, the wind aside since it's mostly just mobility.
Mighty Gunvolt Burst is an excellent platformer. I definitely recommend getting it on 3DS if you don't have a Switch.
@ShadJV - You can store items at stables? Just clothing or other items as well?
Edit - After a fruitless Google search, I re-read your comment and realized you were providing a hypothetical solution to Link being OP.
gunvolt burst over here but you knew that already
I'm glad Inticreates put migh ty gunvolt burst on the 3ds. I'm a proud 3ds owner and I'm glad the platform is still being supported. I do get annoyed by all the people that constantly want the 3ds to die.
Anyway, solid line up this week
I'm waiting for DLC2 before I hop on. That second quest or whatever sounds really interesting to me. I'm not even done beating vanilla Zelda yet!
@Smokingspoon Then don't eat during battle. That's what I do.
I need to start playing zelda again. I stop when mk8 was release. To be honest i find the zelda game to be alittle bit bland. But i do need to finish the game.
Taking my switch on the road with me tomorrow so I can enjoy the new Zelda DLC!
@SpacemanSpiff That's what I thought but I am one Hinox short and I wasn't sure if I was missing something and maybe there were more medals after the initial 3. Sucks too because I know I found all of the Hinox and Stalnoxes and can't figure out which one it is! 😕
Don't know why they are shunning the 3ds VC since it's obvious tge system is going to be around for a while longer. They have PC engine (tg16 over here) VC titles on 3ds (note 3ds, all models not just new) over in Japan so why can't the same be extended to NA and Europe? Or how about some of Nintendos VC stuck on WiiU like star tropics.
@SuperToe Yeah... I could play with my feet and upside down, too, to make it harder
I could make it hard on myself, but It's something else when it's out of your control. But I do try to make it harder myself.
Not gonna replay Breath of the Wild for a while, since I wanna wait until it isn't fresh in my mind anymore before jumping back in. When I do, though, I'll jump right into Hard Mode!
Just the DLC.
I finished BotW, but I now have a reason to return to Hyrule.
DLC for me. Gimme that upgraded Master Sword already! Geez, the Master Sword is going to become the best weapon in the game bar none once it's upgraded (the durability will at least double since it's attack power doubles, and if the actual durability stat raises too, then it should last for a lot more hits before having to recharge). I'm surprised more people here seem to be looking forward to the other stuff in the DLC more!
@Kogorn733 Me too actually! I'm looking at about a four hour drive. Luckily I have my battery bank ready to go!
@Smokingspoon I don't know many people who play Zelda for a challenge either way, unless you're counting artificial challenges (OoT with 3 hearts and no healing items, LttP swordless run, etc) and I'm sure you can inflict artificial challenges on this game too if you think creatively. But yeah, I wouldn't expect Nintendo to do that, I think they're trying to keep it accessible (not that a hard mode needs to cater to that) and the days of Nintendo making hard games is mostly in the past. A shame because I loved BotW and was a tad disappointed when halfway through I started realizing how easy it all was - I didn't try to fight a Guardian until halfway through, assuming they were hard... then I almost immediately learned their lasers aren't too hard to dodge, their health isn't nearly as high as I expected, and cutting off their legs (which is easy to do) immobilizes them. Suddenly I was just like, "...well there goes all the tension from stealth in this game." I know there's tricks to Lynels too but I didn't fight them often and didn't really look up any of them because I wanted SOMETHING to feel like a threat I should avoid if possible.
Why couldn't they put Magical Drop on the 3ds?!
@ShadJV Yep...
Although I can't whine that botw was too easy (on normal mode), I see a lot of person rushing with the game. So I guess it's fine as it is. I just worry that Hard Mode won't be very hard.. not after getting some equipments anyway.
And yes, guardians are a tiny little disappointing. I thought they would actually stalk you as they're named Stalker. Since the first trailer at e3, I thought those things would actively search for you! Imagine how neat that'd be on hard mode. A good reason to sneak.
Some guy in hyrule will tell you about lynel's weakness, it's the only reason I knew about it. They're still quite the beast if you don't have good gears though!
I really wish they would just start releasing Virtual Console games on the Switch every week like the old days on the Wii...
@bimmy-lee sorry, yeah was giving examples on how they could remove the OP elements mentioned by the previous commenter, I apologize for the confusion!
@Smokingspoon I mean I could beat Lynels, but they usually took up several of my better weapons and a few foods items to keep my health up... or Mipha, she alone was OP.
There were a couple moments earlier in the game I tried to sneak by the Guardians and it was suspenseful, but once I learned they weren't that hard to kill... I felt I snuck by them for nothing, just had to pick them off one by one. I'm not chomping at the bit for hard mode though, I mean I guess the tougher enemy classes will take more hits and enemy regen on top of that means I'd go through weapons quicker? But I never had a shortage of weapons, I always had a huge excess...
@NinROCK3T we do, they're just all Neo Geo game. About a month ago I counted and discovered literally a third of the eShop was Neo Geo games. Idk how the ratio is now but I am fairly disappointed we won't get a formal VC until next year likely...
@ShadJV Maybe this time things will be different and there won't excess! Tomorrow we'll all know about it.
Funny thing, the excess was real, I started collecting rare and unique weapons instead of just picking up the better stuff.
Why this Turbografx releases are D4 instead Konami??
@ShadJV - No problem, it's on me for misreading your comment, though it wouldn't surprise me at all to find out I've been playing the game since launch and missed something big/useful like excess weapon storage. It's a great game, and everyone plays it different. I've still only completed one divine beast because I enjoy exploring Hyrule more than anything else in the game. Take care.
Devil's Crush = Best Pinball game EVER!!!
