Original story [Thu 30th Jun, 2022 01:25 BST]: Earlier this month, pre-orders for the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Special Edition on Switch went live across the globe.
Unfortunately, there were some technical issues on the My Nintendo Store in the US due to the high volume of traffic. Nintendo apologised for the inconvenience and promised it would make the Special Edition of the game available at a later date.
Nintendo of America's official social channels have now provided an update, revealing the second round of pre-orders will go live today at some point on June 30th. No exact time has been provided, so be sure to stay alert.
Users will be placed in a waiting room on the My Nintendo Store as pre-order requests are processed and there'll be a limit of one Special Edition per person:
Pre-purchase for the #XenobladeChronicles3 Special Edition will be available on the My Nintendo Store on 6/30.
Please note that you may be placed in a waiting room as pre-order requests are processed, and the purchase limit has been set at 1 per account.

@Doomcrow I think they've already gone on sale once or twice, so maybe. Though the most you can hope for on the eshop is 1/3 off. As for which one is better, Xenoblade 1 is one of my favorite games, while 2 is great, but not as exceptional in my opinion. They both have amazing world design, deep combat systems, and enough content beyond the main story to keep you busy for a long, long time. Plus, they're neck and neck for my absolute favorite soundtrack. 2's story leans a lot harder on cliche anime tropes, though, and the voice acting and even audio mixing in the cutscenes can be really bad. There's also just a lot of times where characters' motivations and decisions make no sense, like members of the main cast failing to share vital information just so it can be dramatically revealed when it's convenient. On the other hand, 1's story is all around fantastic. The less you know about it, the better.

@Doomcrow Oh, and if you do end up getting Definitive Edition, you might want to consider switching to the original soundtrack in the settings. Plenty of the new tracks are about even with the originals, and a few might even be better, but there are a couple massive downgrades that are unforgiveable in my book.

Pass. I have intentions to modify my GameBoy Advance. Plus, July is the month I must pay to renew my Internet protection. And with the way scalpers are, taking advantage of people, I'd rather save money on the Standard Edition of the game with GameStop's Power-Up Rewards Program, and tuck it in bed, and read to it, like I'm SpongeBob SquarePants. That way, I can make a Standard Edition FEEL Special.

@Bizzyb I was only able to put 1 in my cart the first time even though it said limit 2. The way they are shipping the game out first and the other stuff later made me think this was an open preorder.
Glad they're limiting it to only one per customer now. Between that and having the waiting line ready to go as soon as it goes up I'm hopeful I can get one this time.

This won't go well. If there's one thing Nintendo has never done is how to learn their lesson on how to effectively manage an online store. Really not enjoying spending an entire day in front of my computer clicking refresh & I'm sure by the time it does go live, the site will crash again.
Yeah honestly, I'll feel content with the standard edition. I used to jump at every chance for an art book, they aren't what they used to be. Now I'm a bit more choosy with art books, plus it helps that I'm not a huge Xenoblade fan.

@Bretlfcampbell It's because the actual Special Edition contents are shipping out in September while the game itself ships in July. It would be a pain to work that out logistically for retail stores unfortunately. Part of me wishes they stuck to the September release date just so it could be available at retail at this point honestly.

Well 3hrs later and multiple site crashes and ill-fated attempts to add the Special Edition to my cart, I was FINALLY able to confirm checkout. I really really REALLY hope Nintendo NEVER forces us to use their site ever again unless some serious investments are made in their online infrastructure (couldn't even get through typing that with a straight face). Yep, same with mine. I had one in my cart, and then it's been pending, and shows no number on the cart if I log in from another device. But then if I click on the cart, it sends me back to the Waiting Room.

I FINALLY managed to secure a preorder. Like other commenters, it took about 90 minutes of persistence with the product page (which wasn't TOO bad) and getting my cart to properly load (The waiting/showing on cart icon but not appearing/cart refusing to load cycle...ARGH). I never dealt with the site logging me out at least. I still didn't fully relax until I received the confirmation email.
Fingers crossed they don't send out cancellation notices....

This preorder method is the worst.
This whole process was utter crap! I waited more than 4 hours from 10am pst to 2pm pst and when I finally got in it told me it was out of stock so I couldn't get one despite fact that I had one in my cart. I am beyond frustrated with the idiots at Nintendo who thought that making this limited edition exclusive to their site was a great idea.

Nintendo why do you like making bad decisions is this the lasting legacy you want for your company. I'm confused by the process. My experience:
I've been in the waiting room on and off since the presale went live.
I was able to get the special edition in my cart a few hours into the waiting process. It even allowed me to start to "check out" my cart. I could clearly see there was an item in my cart but it wasn't allowing me to choose my shipping method and actually pay for it. I was then kicked back to the red screen queue to keep waiting.
A couple hours ago I was finally brought back to the checkout process. Again I could see the item in my cart but it was telling me that the item was sold out. SOLD OUT?
Now I'm back in the red screen queue again. Am I insane? Am I a glutton for punishment? Do I enjoy being treated like garbage by Nintendo? LMAO.
My question is, should I keep waiting? Is the special edition really sold out or, since I'm in the queue again, should I keep hanging in there??? Advice appreciated.

Just got the order confirmation after nearly 8 hours of trying. I'd successfully ordered collector's/special editions of all prior Xenoblade Chronicles games.
Had I failed to do so here, I would have faced an existential crisis, quit my job in big law, sold all my worldly possessions, and gone to work on a potato farm in Oregon.
I FINALLY GOT MY PREORDER! It took about 2 hours of waiting to get in once I got home from work.

@mario-64 How long has it been since your order went through? It took about an hour or so for me to get my confirmation email after my order went in. If it's showing up in your order history and you were charged for it, I'd assume you're fine.
Unfortunately no. Didn't even catch that the orders were going live again until a little past 4:00 pm though. Ended up encountering the glitch where you couldn't even add the item to your cart, but I wonder if that was just the result of the system not having caught up with the item selling out.
There's a local game store that gets these SEs in now and again. Sucks having to pay a premium there, though it'll still probably be cheaper than scalpers.
I finally got a confirmation email of a Special Edition order from Nintendo, 6 1/2 hours after starting the purchasing process.
What a mess. I managed to get one, but it took a couple of hours of trying. I had the same "cart limit reached" problem as others. Finally managed to get into my cart and get all my info in, but it wouldn't let me confirm... Eventually had to leave for the evening, and thought it was a lost cause, then managed to finally get into my cart again to purchase it from my phone.
After weeks of Twitter alerts and dread over not being available when it went live, I think I will just go for the regular copy next time.

Forget it. I'll make my own "Special" Edition by putting some love into a Standard Edition. You know, get some cardstock, make a custom O-Ring Slip Cover, with some alternate artwork, tuck the game into it, and read it a bedtime story, and kiss it goodnight. You know, be creepy like Coach Z and loving like SpongeBob SquarePants at the same time.
Besides, I can save at least $5 on it by using my Monthly $5 Credit from Power-Up Rewards, only at GameStop! Power to the Players!

Never thought I'd say this but I'm done with Nintendo too, gonna sell my Switch and stick to PC gaming and not have this disappointment on losing out on Collector/Limited Editions always getting picked up by a**hole scalpers and being sold at 3-5x the price. Quite frustrating since I was hoping to get one get as a birthday present for my bf, and I WAS looking every day or two. Obviously I'm not the only one disappointed here, so sorry to us all. Stupid Nintendo.
If it's like the Metroid Dread Special Edition, it will randomly pop up brand new 6 months later in one of the only two official retailers specialized in video games in my city at scalper prices. No joke.
Here in Mexico, the Special Edition of Metroid Dread launched at a MSRP of 2100 mexican pesos, but when it appeared again last April it was at 3500 pesos, a little more expensive than what you can find it on Facebook Marketplace and such.
Our official retailers, GamePlanet and Gamers (which are now the same thing), are slowly restocking things at scalper prices. The recently restocked Byleth amiibo is only 50 pesos away from costing 3 times what an amiibo used to cost at launch back in 2014. And yes, I know there are import taxes, inflation and whatnot, but how do you go from 500-579 pesos to 700? That's half the cost of a brand new Switch game.
Can they not just add a little button that says “I am not a robot” and that magically solve all of the problem with bots?
Luckily I was able to land one. Super stoked after the fiasco that happened last time.
@Nameless_Shame I'll take your word for it. The last time I tried to preorder an amiibo (Skyward Sword Zelda), it was sold out almost immediately. Thankfully I found one at my local GameStop a month or two after they were restocked post-launch. I'm not nearly as confident that the same situation will happen with this SE.
Lol glad I’m just getting the standard edition and not even wasting time on this mess. Special edition doesn’t look that great anyway to warrant the hassle
@Tyranexx Oh, for sure, anymore most recent amiibo are pretty easy to find in the wild, unless it’s a low run current Smash Bros. one, and even then, they oftentimes get restocks a year or so later.
I should have specified “2015-2018 era amiibo preordering” as those days were absolute hell, and I’ll never forgive the collector in me during my time without steady income in 2017 and missing out on literally some of the most expensive amiibo there are today within literally just a few months’ timeframe.
Nintendo can go suck themselves, doesn't have any notice and warning. Now is too late, if i don't get this special edition i just not gonna play i don't give a f#%; about normal edition and i refuse to pay scalper. So they better have more special edition on website or else i just don't care and save my money for something else.
I got in the waiting line around 5-6pm est. After about 45 minutes, when I came back to my pc to check, it was loaded on the store page with a red button to preorder! I was able to get one! Pumped! I also had it loading on my phone. But the page went into "offline". Thank Mario I was home near my pc.
I have been loading that page for months now many times a day and missed the first chance. I checked it out on the way home from work and the page had a high traffic queue going and warned that refreshing the page would give up my spot. I kept the page up the entire way home and by the time I pulled into my driveway, the page loaded a pre-order option. Best limited closed pre-order experience.
@Nameless_Shame I admit I didn't often preorder amiibo during that time and mostly just picked up what I found in stores. But I've heard/read many horror stories like your own. But scalping has unfortunately been an issue for years that was made even worse by the pandemic...and not helped by questionable business decisions, I might add.
I got one this time. Took 3 hours of pain, sweat, and tears on June 30, plus 10 hours of the same (but to no avail) on June 8.
And that's not counting the hours before it went live when I was checking back every hour through the night and day to see if it's gone live yet…
People have lives to live, people don't have the money to pay for super inflated prices, and not everyone has the know-how to code a bot that tracks and purchases an item on the internet. Scalping needs to be regulated, and I've made my comparison numerous times in the past: If independent sellers can do this, what's stopping major retailers from doing the same? What if Walmart buys out the entire stock from their competitors and raises the prices? If they can't, why should resellers be allowed to do the same?
I bet the scalpers got a bunch of them. Money making time.
Like others that got under the wire. I got one around close to 6pm right as I got inside my home. And then shortly before 7 pm they close the orders. Can't believe I spend from 12:30 to 6 pm to get just one SE. There was two and the system balked and I had to remove both and got stuck back in line. And I called and complained to the Supervisor that this process suck goats and told them did they not learn anything from June 8. I told them make it open preorder at a GameStop or don't even try again as this isn't helpful to buyers. And my Survey wasn't glowing....quite the opposite....
