I really don't need to pay those prices for a physical copy of a mobile game. It's a fun game, don't get me wrong. But they overcharge on console as it is (I know, console prices are always a bit higher). $4.49 mobile game that's fairly entertaining even on Switch, but not something I need to show off in a collection.
I like both but I can't really pick one here. The Japanese one is a nice spread of the characters but has a lot of deadspace and is kind of boring. The US one is dynamic but also... Bothers me. First, they're using Frost Arc, but with fire. I know this has been pointed out by others, so I'll leave that there. I can even almost forgive it, because while Marle clearly can't use fire, the triple tech itself does somewhat look like Crono is coming down with blue fire-ish energy (maybe just from mixing with his lightning powers?). Second, though, the setting suggests either Antiquity/12,000 B.C or Deaths Peak. And they are fighting Heckran. This is clearly not his cave lol. I just assume it is early concept art, but such art is amln odd pick to me to represent the whole game.
Probably not a popular opinion, but I kind of like the Final Fantasy Chronicles cover. The FF IV portion is a little bland, but I do like the wavy reel of the CT cinematics.
@Some1onearth Agreed, I'm a little torn. I like my little physical import collection and would love it if we could get this for console as well. I may import for my collection at some point, but will likely get it on Steam at launch.
Maybe it's just my experience as an American growing up with Game Genie, Game Shark, and Pro Action Replay... As well as some very direct Pokemon save hackers (I mainly used those for their ability in the GB/C days to save Pokemon before a game reset and put your party into the new save)... But this seems excessive as heck. The American legal system would be quite busy if they started arresting people who had circumvented hardware restrictions. In fact, companies tried to make that illegal and lost. I'm not a lawyer, but I also think the correlation here of "selling something made on circumvented hardware" isn't a link (no pun intended) that would apply here. If he was selling copyrighted material, yes. But what device he used to violate copyright would be a secondary, if at all. And if he wasn't violating intellectual property, he wouldn't be ARRESTED. The worse I can picture happening is violated terms of service and facing account locks or event banning from the company itself.
I guess to the Japanese we must look pretty wild. Our store shelves have 3rd party combination "retro" consoles, and people frequently sell reproduced retro carts online. And selling saves? People sell whole accounts, modified consoles, have people clear content for them for a price. I guess seeing the word arrested gave me a moment of culture shock. Similar to how it throws me when a fan group works on a mod and a Japanese rights holder drops an indiscriminate ban hammer, while western contemporaries often advertise on the strength of their fan modding community lol. Bethesda fans will release unofficial expansions, clone whole commercial games inside other commercial games, and drop bug fix packs so integral the company highlights them. Squenix fans had drama over a couple of Chrono Trigger fan side games that were non profit. I'm way off topic so I'll shush up.
This is underwhelming. Though, I do a lot of streaming and screen sharing in the house with other platforms, so the LAN support would be nice. If it's compatible with older docks, then doubly so. I mainly use my Lite, and my original model stays docked because of a screen scratch and some pretty bad joycon drift. I could see myself getting this as a replacement. Of course, I shouldn't plan this anytime soon, since we all know new Nintendo products get snatched by scalpers within minutes.
Pokemon Crystal Metal Gear Ghost Babel Harvest Moon GBC Revelations the Demon Slayer All three Zelda games were fantastic, my personal fave being Oracle of Seasons Dragon Quest 3 Dragon Quest Monsters series Street Fighter Alpha Mega Man Extreme 2 Shantae
I was playing some Apple Arcade titles this past weekend on my iPad docked with a Gamevice (precursor to the Kishi in this article's photo). So I'm actually curious about this.
@Giygas_95 I think you're right about Xbox. Republic Commando has been on their store for years as an Xbox Original title, and this port doesn't really bring anything new to the table besides the ability to play the core campaign.
I was very interested in this game during development.
I was somewhat disappointed with what we got. That likely had a lot to do with it not being a true Star Fox game though. I would have judged it differently on its own merits if it wasn't using a license and cramming in afterthought shooter levels lol
I do kind of want to replay SFA at some point though, and judge it on its own merits.
@Bass_X0 the analog thing may not be the games fault, but it is a relevant factor for this port. Sounds like the game would be better played with an external controller. But that's a weird compromise, since it is a portable port and not really something that's going to shine in dock mode.
@Ganner I have to give it credit! Dated mechanics for a shooter, but the squad mechanics were better than in Halo 5 (which is a spiritual successor with some of the same devs)
@superderper I agree with you with a lot of things. Especially comic movies. Here though, I'll allow it. The first movie set itself up as a prequel (even though it in no way could fit with canon), and the second movie was a majorly butchered take on RE 3: Nemesis. From there it went deeply into its own story separate from the games. It completely ignored RE 1 and 2. So, from a film stance, telling 1 and 2 here could almost be seen as a soft reboot by way of a prequel. And even just being a new potential series, going to the Spencer estate and following it up with the story of Birkin is fair game.
Capcom can't be faulted too much. RE6 was largely hated. Revelations seems to be niche and 7 had to fight an uphill battle to reclaim fan interest. But they've literally remade 1-3 to almost unanimous acclaim.
@Bunkerneath Let's not act like they've ever ACTUALLY adapted Resident Evil for the big screen. Those flicks are everything people say about the Transformers movies, but for some reason they get a pass. They used the license and some familiar names and creature designs to churn out an action franchise for the director's wife. They jumped the shark after the 3rd movie, and proceeded to make 3 more lol. They're enjoyable on a certain level, some more than others, but they don't tell the story of Resident Evil. And they certainly aren't horror films. It remains to be seen how this new one turns out. But if he's going to draw more haven't from the classics and aim for a survival horror feel, I'm all for wiping the slate clean.
@xxx128 im playing 7 right now with my son, and it feels like a return to form. If you have the means, I recommend checking it out. I'd skipped it because 6 and the spin-offs were so bad, but got drawn in by the Village hype and remembered I had it off GamePass.
Edit: Why am I not surprised to see arguments over race dominating the thread. Keep it classy, folks. I'll just say to the people playing victim over "what if a white person played," I don't have the time to educate you. But you should honestly look into how often Hollywood does just that. Even The woke MCU, which for example, has Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor (white and black respectively) in roles that the comics have as Asian characters. As for whites, Hollywood will cast white actors to play real people of color. Not just fictional characters. My favorite is when they almost had Joseph Fiennes (Voldemort's brother lol) play Michael Jackson. There are tons more than this. They filmed but ultimately decided not to air. Honorable mention to fictional characters such as Jake Gyllenhaal as the Prince of PERSIA, Christian Bale as Moses (really the whole cast of Exodus, with the director vocally stating non whites wouldn't sell tickets iirc), and Liam Neeson as Ra's Al Ghul. This may be bad faith on my part, but I'm willing to bet hard cash that anyone saying "well they'd complain if" never had a problem with the above examples.
I'm interested in Haven. I have it downloaded from GamePass, but I've been caught up in playing Dragon Quest XI. I may get this on Switch for portability.
@Lordplops given the nature of the Switch, a pretty would need to do away with the GamePad shooting. I'd totally buy this. I could never get the hang of it, so I played the game co-op with my son
Is there a story campaign? It's touting itself as competitive but only online multiplayer for Steam. We're still social distancing here so I'm not about to have a party for an obscure indie SRPG lol
@NathanTheAsian funny enough, my Switch was actually my go-to to watch a lot of my movies before I got a Chromecast. At least in my bedroom. After I signed up for Movies Anywhere (I don't know if they service outside the states), most of my various accounts linked. So my Amazon, Vudu, Fandango, iTunes, and Microsoft libraries all synched with Google TV. And since Google synchs with YouTube... Lol
@SM3DASislit the problem I have with that position is the Switch has Hulu, YouTube, Funimation... It's just weird that Netflix seems to be this big deal.
@AbejaGrande to be fair, "Lovecraftian l" is basically a descriptor or arguably a subgenre. If you want to debate if we should so much as use his name, I guess that's a discussion to be had. But in general, it isn't like this game is funneling money into his estate. It just means it will touch on themse of cosmic horror and personal madness.
I spent a decent amount of time with this on the Stadia demo, and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. Yes, it is basically offbrand BotW with a touch of GoW combat, but neither of those is bad things. I did chuckle at the narration and banter between Prometheus and Zeus.
While the whole package isn't as polished and heartfelt as Zelda was, there are things that I found better. You get access to your wings very quickly, much more quickly than the glider in BotW. So there is almost immediate freedom. There are also ariel enemies who can possibly harass you. The combat is a blast, while Zelda locks you into a very deliberate approach to every fight given the controversial weapon system. This is where that GoW influence allows Fenyx to forge its own path. There was a decent build-up in the threat level of enemy encounters. If I wasn't attentive, mooks could yeet me off a tower. But in the zone, whole squads of enemies with differing sizes and with differing ranges of attacks were a blast to mow through.
To be fair, a lot of people felt that the original game drew more than a little inspiration from the MegaTen franchise. The door swings both ways, though, as people felt some of the structure and concepts in fellow DS game SMT Devil Survivor felt a little bit TWEWY inspired 2 years later. Personally, I just think they were all Gantz fans lol.
Of course people saying this is ripping off P5 are wrong, but the TWEWY/MegaTen comparison debate goes back well over a decade.
Bethesda games already run better on Microsoft hardware, so no real change here. Now we just get GamePass support. Skyrim mod supported size on PS4 is literally 1/5th the size allowed on xbox. And the PS3 edition of the game was notoriously broken, even by Bugthesda standards lol
I'll get it. I have the Symphony of the Night mobile port and it is really good. I don't recommend on a phone with touch controls, but the touch controls work well on tablet. I also have a Razer Kishi (think Gamevice) and a couple bluetooth controllers with clips, so the whole "touch controls are inferior" thing doesn't bother me much.
$50 plus the stress of limited stock hunting for Mario 1 and a Mario themed clock app?
Looks at 3DS
Yeah, I think I'm all set. Heck, this just reminded me of the Mario Clock app I haven't used in ages. I'm going to set an alarm on that for old times sake.
I just read this in an article, describing them as gaming's equivalent of police procedural TV shows-
"They're the perfect amount of predictability and twists, a dash of wit and justice served. You don't have to follow a complex mythology. There's a cold open, a bit of banter, character establishment, red herring, twist, final answer. On Law & Order, if there was a rich kid, they always did it. On House, it was never lupus. And if you don't like an episode, well, there would be a different one next week."
They publish, they aren't devs. They have a number of studios churning these out, and some are better than others. A number of these are from Exe-Create, who is one of their better, if "safer" studios. Don't expect innovation or pushing the envelope, but the Asdivine series is decent.
They're like the B movies of jrpgs. Direct to video. Guilty pleasure for those who love the genre not enduring classics you'll revisit over the years. But I've never bought one outside of a mobile sale, so I don't regret the $3-4 I tend to pay for these lol. I feel like price should factor into a value discussion. People often tell you that these don't hold a candle to the industry greats. And while true, even the inflated console prices they charge are about $15. They default $7-9 on mobile, with frequent sales, and some free with ad support. If they wanted $40-60 I would say that's a valid complaint.
I rather like the first game, and Micromon before it. That was their first step into this arena, iOS exclusive that changed hands and was pulled and re-released, so a lot of people don't really know about it. But this is their third game and I'm interested to see how they've improved.
I know it is a contentious time right now for Pokemon fans. I wouldn't bill this as your answer to SwSh. Rather I would just say that if you like Pokemon, and want to try something similar but less bloated by just the sheer weight of decades, give it a go.
I always find myself browsing their games on mobile... And sometimes buying them. The sales on mobile are much steeper, and a lot of their games have a free with ads version in addition to premium. Anyway, point is - they aren't amazing. However, they are made by different studios, so it is a disservice to just say "ah Kemco." I think one of the studios is directly owned by them? But otherwise they are a publisher. And some of these games are pretty decent. Monochrome Order is actually fairly ambitious for them, and I'd recommend it. Most of this particular crop up here is rated fairly high on the Play store, which is saying something in an ecosystem were people tend to either leave a 5, or a 1 if they have literally any complaint. I've seen people leave 1's "until they make new content or a sequel," so if a game is holding a 4.4 out of 5 it is doing alright.
I feel iffy on the DLC practice. But I will allow in this case that it may have cost them a pretty penny to ink this deal.
Dante wasn't in the original Nocturne. He was in the director's cut release, Maniax (hence the name of this DLC). The Maniax version just so happens to be the version that was released in the west. There was actually ANOTHER version after that - this is the version that the upcoming port is based on. Presumably due to rights timing out, Dante was replaced with Raidou (as Atlus owns that character). It is interesting discussing Nocturne all these years in fan circles. Raidou is treated as the "canon" edition, despite most western players never touching that version of the game.
All that said, I would assume that in order to get Dante back in here, they needed to ink a new deal with Capcom for the new consoles. They were able to sell it on PS3 as a PS2 classic with Dante, but a whole new release would require new negotiations. The DLC route may simply be to recoup those costs? One could also argue that it is to keep the base game's cost low, for those who don't care for Dante. As I said above, a lot of fans in the community seem to prefer the Raidou version, or at least want to experience that version since they have already played the Dante version.
@Old_Man_Nintendo wouldn't a new version of 64 be the third? Or are you counting Virtual Console?
Personally, I think they should just... Make a new Star Fox game. Without gimmicks. Pick a consistent design direction. They could embrace the arcade-feel of the series' roots and make an awesome rail shooter, like Zero minus the utterly needless control setup. Or, team with Namco again and make something off an Ace Combat style, which would just mean a focus on All-Range mode style missions with objective phases. Or, wishful thinking, but go a little more adventurous and make something more open, maybe having side environments to explore and take on missions, dock areas, maybe bases to walk around. That kind of got in my head as something of an evolution of Starlink (not a SF game, but the formula could be adopted).
I'm curious if any other parents here have this little internal battle. Miyamoto is a visionary who shaped a large part of my childhood, and will forever have my respect. However, he has less of an impact on my own child, because as an adult I disagree with almost everything I hear from him. A number of promising games seem to suffer from strict guidelines or needless and half baked gimmicks, and the inevitable article is "Miyampto came to the office and said..." It impacts my purchases. Not that I boycott, but it does play a role in my prioritization. Haven't bought a Paper Mario game since he started waging a crusade against the idea of an RPG (when they literally sold the franchise on the back of Legend of the Seven Stars initially).
Well this is a new wrinkle, huh. I haven't started the expansion, and haven't bought a second copy for my son's Shield. So, for the first time, we are gated out.
I'm not certain what my incentive here would be. I have the 8bitdo SN30 Pro and Pro + (with phone clips), Ipega Red Knight, and just got a Razer Kishi. I'd be better off getting the clip for the Xbox or Dualshcock controllers if I wanted.
For anyone interested, I'd suggest getting an Xbox controller + clip, or the SN30 Pro +. The size makes a HUGE difference in comfort. This controller is a redux of the SN30 Pro, and I couldn't use the clip for lengthy sessions. Granted, I have a Note. YMMV with smaller phones. But I have 0 problems with the Pro +. Telescopics are pretty awesome as well.

Probably not a popular opinion, but I kind of like the Final Fantasy Chronicles cover. The FF IV portion is a little bland, but I do like the wavy reel of the CT cinematics.

Re: Microsoft Won't Be Taking Bethesda's Games Away From Nintendo Platforms
Bethesda games already run better on Microsoft hardware, so no real change here. Now we just get GamePass support. Skyrim mod supported size on PS4 is literally 1/5th the size allowed on xbox. And the PS3 edition of the game was notoriously broken, even by Bugthesda standards lol
Re: Switch Is No Longer The Only Way To Play Bloodstained On The Move
I'll get it. I have the Symphony of the Night mobile port and it is really good. I don't recommend on a phone with touch controls, but the touch controls work well on tablet. I also have a Razer Kishi (think Gamevice) and a couple bluetooth controllers with clips, so the whole "touch controls are inferior" thing doesn't bother me much.
Re: Nintendo Reminds Us Its Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch Will Only Be Around For A Limited Time
$50 plus the stress of limited stock hunting for Mario 1 and a Mario themed clock app?
Looks at 3DS
Yeah, I think I'm all set. Heck, this just reminded me of the Mario Clock app I haven't used in ages. I'm going to set an alarm on that for old times sake.
Re: Kemco Discounts Six RPGs Across Switch, Wii U And 3DS For A Limited Time
@Yanina haha thank you.
Re: Kemco Discounts Six RPGs Across Switch, Wii U And 3DS For A Limited Time
They publish, they aren't devs.
Re: Where To Pre-Order Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity On Nintendo Switch
Given a certain flashback showing the carnage full power Link could bring, this is probably a lore appropriate genre soft lol
Re: Where To Pre-Order Super Mario 3D All-Stars On Nintendo Switch
I just preorder on amazon in the US.
Re: Review: Nexomon: Extinction - An Interesting Pokémon Clone That Doesn't Quite Stick The Landing
Re: Ring Fit Adventure Is Getting Its Own Direct In China Tomorrow
@rjejr I'll just have to keep an eye out. I having been in big stores as much of late, for obvious reasons lol
Re: Get Discounts On Seven RPGs In Kemco's Switch And 3DS Summer Sale
Re: Ring Fit Adventure Is Getting Its Own Direct In China Tomorrow
@rjejr haha facts. I still haven't bought this game, because that simply don't keep it in stock.
Re: Devil May Cry's Dante Returns As DLC In The Shin Megami Tensei III Remaster
Re: PlatinumGames Has No Idea If Star Fox Zero Will Be Ported To Switch
Re: Paper Mario Producer Says Team Is "No Longer Able To Graphically Represent Individual Characteristics" In Toad NPCs
Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield 'Armor Beginnings' Online Competition Announced
@Paej13 that's good to know! Thank you 😊
Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield 'Armor Beginnings' Online Competition Announced
Well this is a new wrinkle, huh. I haven't started the expansion, and haven't bought a second copy for my son's Shield. So, for the first time, we are gated out.
Re: Random: 8BitDo's Xbox Cloud Gaming Controller Sure Looks Familiar
