Announced as part of Nintendo's Indie World Showcase, Forever Entertainment is bringing Sega's light gun horror classic to Switch in the form of The House of the Dead: Remake.
Described as "a remade version of the game introduced in 1997 in arcade platform", you can check out the trailer for this arcade on-rails shooter above. The PR states that you can expect "a whole new entourage and gameplay changes to suit modern gaming standards", too, including 'modern graphics' (as showcased above).
Here are some screens from the updated game — feast your eyes on these:
The House of the Dead: Remake is scheduled to launch on Switch sometime later this year.

Highlight reveal!
wow cant wait!!!
I definitely didn't see this one coming. Now all I need is Typing of the Dead DLC!
Another weird (non)move on Segas part? An opportunity for them to release something people actually want .. given to an indie developer. I’m sure there’s more to it than meets the eye. But hey it’s cool either way!
No words on gyro controls for this? It would be lame with stick aiming.
Pleasssssse come out with a light gun for switch! I love all the rail shooters on Wii. Not sure how well the tracking is on switch... but I would love to get a lightgun and a ton of these sorts of games on switch!
The article suggest this is a Switch exclusive, is that correct? What about the sequels?
Don't see why they would bother with this without gyro controls. I'll wait to see if they announce that.
Reminds me I have to try a few of my on rail shooting eshop games still to see how they work on the switch.
Amazing! Was just playing some House of the Dead: Overkill last night.
Kind of miss the old graphics
DON'T COME.. DON'T COME..
...aw heck come out already!!!
Finally! The one announcement worth salt and it was in a montage 😒 Still excited to play this one!
@AG_Awesome Is there any?
Loved playing these on the PS3 from Sega and the Namco ones. Using the move and gun attachment. It worked very well.
Hopefully they will nail this on the Switch somehow and I will buy.
Bring back light gun games !!!!!!! Point Blank would be perfect on Switch.
Check out the Sinden lightgun. The tech for new TVs is finally here.
@AG_Awesome which on rail shooters have you got on switch. I can't think of any but wouldn't mind some!
I have this on the Saturn. Will most certainly double dip. Hopefully this has Giro controls
No lightgun peripheral, no buy.
Playing HotD with a cursor is a travesty.
Light-gun games are too few and far between these days, especially on Switch eventhough the genre works perfect on that console. Definitely a day one buy as this series is one of my favorites. Would be cool, if it sells well enough, to see some other HotD games show up. A port of Overkill wold be awesome.
@neogyo It's not ideal, but I'd rather SEGA did this than just letting the franchises lie dormant. Maybe Nintendo should hand out some of their dead franchises to indie developers/publishers too!
@BigE @brunojenso There is a fun shooter that uses Gyro controls called SNIPER Hunter Scope. It's usually very cheap too.
I only have a switch lite, can I play this???
@Clyde_Radcliffe Cool!
@gojiguy I'm sure it will support gyro (they would be insane not to) You can actually get a gun thing you can put the Joycon's in.
@Clyde_Radcliffe right on yea I agree:) SOR4 turned out awesome
Labo compatible?! 😜
Coolcoolcoolcoolcoolcool
The is on my list
@brunojenso @BigE the two I have but haven’t played yet are “mad bullets” and “S.N.I.P.ER. Hunter scope”. At least I think that’s what the other one was. They’re not house of the dead of course, but best I could find on the eshop
Oh my god it still looks delightfully camp!
Love it!
If this game has...
1) Physical Release
2) Gyro Controls
3) Plastic zapper for my Joycon
It will be a day 1 purchase for me!!! Sega, take my money!
I’ve been waiting on news for this for what seems like forever! Didn’t expect this to show up on an Indie showcase!
Look, I’m all for remakes and stuff but this better have kept the initial first level intact with the actual house. I used to love the first level, going through what felt like a haunted house.
I’m so buying this on release!
Curious to see how they get the aiming and controls nailed down.
I love on rails shooters, but there needs to be “lightgun” support. It’s not the same experience with a joystick.
This will probably be timed exclusive like the Panzer Dragoon Remake from the same publisher was. Will get it for sure on PC to play it with a Sinden Lightgun to get the true lightgun experience.
The best and surprising reveal of all
Everyone's forgetting the most important thing Magician Theme Remix!
Holy crap what a nice surprise! 😄
Yay, they should port all the other games across as well. Really like what they did with the characters in overkill.
Day one purchase !
Huff 😤😤 this really should be on psvr and I've been waiting for that to happen (both hotd 1&2) for a long time, such a waste smdh
Day one purchase here too.
@Duncanballs point blank and time crisis, imagine that on psvr 2, would be godly 👍👍
Had a blast playing this on Dreamcast back in the day.
best reveal. I would keep my eye on this
@SHULZ021 This game wasn't on Dreamcast. The 2nd one was though.
Please bring lightgun games back
@AG_Awesome are there any?
Great news. Loved the Wii games. But need gyro
Can’t wait...I’ve been waiting for this for ever!
Really hope they put some guns controls in.
This should have been the final reveal with a full trailer. Not just a quick screen grab in a mash up.
It’s amazing how dull and rubbish these indie showcases are and yet the titles are there it’s just the way they string them together with the painful voice overs.
Directs also have the same problem with pacing....they should really treat them like movies.
After this please remastered House of the Dead Overkill, that is already in HD I just need a port of it on Switch. Hopefully this one had gyro aiming for gun support.
I genuinely can't get enough of good lightgun games - such a shame that non-CRT-tvs put a stop to 'true' lightgun aiming. Still enjoy a good bit of Ghost Squad or House of the Dead 2/3 on the Wii though, cracking games - I wish we'd have seen some of the Namco stuff appear on the Wii too.
Ahhh that's awesome, would have loved if the rest of them were remade along with Typing of the Dead. Would be so good as you can use a USB keyboard!
Yeah. I'll buy that one on day one. I was a sucker for that classic on-rails shoot 'em up. Particularly this game.
We must stop Curian!
@BlueOcean looks like switch exclusive.
So excited for this though.
It might be timed exclusive or maybe just full on exclusive for only switch
I wonder if people remember this bit of news from 2019:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/09/house_of_the_dead_1_and_2_are_coming_to_switch
@ArmoredGoomba I feel like Gyro controls are not necessary, and honestly would be painful as heck, for an arcade Light Gun game lol
I thought I and II were going to be released together?
@anoyonmus I guess that it will be a timed exclusive, not because Nintendo paid but because some indie games start their life on Switch. It looks nice!
@BlueOcean yeah but I feel like this game won’t come to Xbox or PC. Like this game isn’t suited for PC or Xbox.
PlayStation is more likely to get it but not Xbox or PC. An oculus version could also happen as well.
House of the Dead is one of those games that specializes in motion controls like it is best played with motion controls.
Even in handheld mode it would work fine.
But PC and the newer Xbox don’t have any form of motion controls though.
@anoyonmus Nah I can see PC and Xbox getting this too.
@Rafie maybe.
But I feel like a VR version, PlayStation version, and switch version will be the best experienced.
Or maybe Nintendo paid for a year exclusivity.
Imagine this game in VR or using the Labo. NOW THAT WOULD BE AWESOME
@Kisame83 If I can choose between gyro or just moving around an analog stick I'll go with gyro.
Analog stick while playing HOTD is just lame.
I love House of the Dead 1. Honestly, it's still the best in my eyes. The things I'm concerned about is, of course, no light guns. We haven't had any pointer control since World of Goo, so I'm afraid it's a done deal (I don't think the IR is that capable and fast to handle it). Gyro is okay I guess, I played enough Splatoon, but not everyone else's implementation is as great.
Porting every little detail, from the special hidden room at the end, all the different paths, the different endings, Sophie code, even the "Reload" voiceover which was disappointingly missing from the trailer.
And I hope there's some sort of 60FPS performance mode. I can appreciate the work to update the graphics, but classic SEGA arcade games beyond early Model 1 took great steps to optimize as much as possible to attain consistently high framerates. They culled polygons we couldn't see, they left models chunky, they did the roughest baked in lighting ever on the textures because there were no other lights, they even swapped out individual meshes every single frame on flags in SEGA SuperGT/SCUD Race to save processing power! I don't know how much of an impact doing those kinds of cutbacks on current hardware we'd see, but I hope this studio takes steps to deliver the best presentation possible. When in doubt, use less lights and physics!
@ArmoredGoomba EXACTLY WHAT I AM SAYING.
Analog stick in handheld mode would be fine but not as good though.
Hence this is why I think Xbox wouldn’t really be great for this game.
PC might be a ok but it is kinda clumsy.
Hence therefore
This game is best only in VR, PlayStation and switch version
@masterLEON maybe.
Gyro would be awesome.
In handheld mode, maybe they might do a thing where you can make your switch move left and right and attack the enemies.
That might be weird but it could work tho
@Dezzy70 the original house of the dead was only in arcades and sega saturn. House of the dead 2 and up have been on everything else
I must have missed this during the sizzle reel. Pretty cool though.
I love my switch, don’t get me wrong. But I have always felt like the tech was a bit of a step back. Wii and Wii U had soooo many amazing games everyone could get into because of the motion control/ir. I really don’t understand why they didn’t include it on both sides of the joycons. We would have another Wii Sports for sure (switch sports) and light gun games would be plenty. I watched the video a couple times and sadly to me it looks like it is being played on analog stick based on the pointer movement. I understand sometimes the motion control was gimmicky... but when it worked well it was magic.
Are there any light gun games currently on the Switch? I know there was a bunch on the Wii, but if any have come out on Switch, it seems they have been ignored.
@Duncanballs Got my recoil sinden coming soon
I am looking forward to hearing ‘RE RE RE RELOAD’ over and over again!
It'll need a light gun to be truly authentic, gyro controls won't cut it. But the trailer looks very promising and as 90's kid that saved his Christmas and pocket money to buy the original for the saturn I'm very excited to be getting my hands on this.
@BongoBongo123
If the switch lite has gyro then you should be fine
This is pretty cool. I wonder what are the odds they will release the 2&3 Returns game from Wii?
@Phenzy They must have something planned, even if it's a gun shell you slot a joycon into, a bit like the cabella games back on wii & 360. Gyro is a given at the very least so I wouldn't worry about only having thumb sticks to aim with
@Strumpan gyro usually sucks too, it drifts too much and I don’t like constantly calibrating while playing. If they can’t release a gun with a sensor bar then just forget it
@vio they are out there but they suck, Big Buck Hunter especially, it’s unplayable
I had the original on Saturn and its sequel on Dreamcast, loved them. I couldn't believe my eyes when it briefly appeared in the Showcase, I had to skip it back just to make sure.
The one thing that concerns me is, it's from the same developer as the Panzer Dragoon remake which turned out to be a bit of a mess. At least with this though, it's just an on-rails shooter so there's not really that much things they can mess up. I hope he sticks to just remaking the game as it was, without adding any new gimmicks. It certainly looks the part, so with an untampered game and those graphics, this should be great.
But this is 1.
How are we supposed to, "suffer like G did?"
Was just playing the arcade last weekend. I assume this uses giro controls similar to the resident evel chronicles game on wii...
Ooooh, if it's priced right I'll pre-order. I LOVE lightgun games!
I'm throwing money at the screen but nothing happened!!!!!
Actually I’m going against the grain here and hoping for Switch Pro Controller support!! Or at least let us choose!
@stevep You are right, but as long as we can recalibrate with the push of a button, like in Skyward Sword, it could work all right. At least better than stick controls. But yeah, it would have been really cool if they released a sensor bar with it. I doubt the IR camera in the joycon is good enough to be usable, but if they can release the sensor bar (which they won't), they can release a light gun with it.
@Clyde_Radcliffe cheers for that. Just bought it for £1.40
@Doktor-Mandrake a few more bill's to clear and then I will be ordering one. Tried all of the alternatives and they just dont compare.
Can't wait.
Coin op golden ages!!!
I can't wait...
I have House of the Dead 2 & 3 and Overkill. I never did complete 2 & 3 though.
Will be getting this as i have never played it before and it looks great.
I never did understand why there wasn't a Time Crisis Collection on the Wii? I think that would have sold really well.
There’s a light gun style game on ‘51 Worldwide Games’ that uses a single joy con held vertically. The experience is surprisingly good.
Really really awesome announcement, if a light gun possibility is there.
Looks great. Be interesting to see how the Controls work but this seems an almost certain buy.
If I was greedy I’d love to see an emulated port of the original Arcade game thrown in too. The only official home port is on the Saturn which is fun but not very accurate.
@electrolite77 By turning the joycons round as guns, it will be packaged with guns.
Amazing to see this game return, it's the best in the series. I look forward to seeing the forthcoming gun designs.
For you people claiming to have played these on passed consoles.your wrong only way you ever played the very first house of the dead game is 2 ways.1st way is arcade and the 2nd way is the 1 and only console it was ever ported to till now and that is the sega Saturn
I think that it will be ported to Xbox as well. As stated by others, the joy-con aiming controls are very bad on Switch. Wii's are good in games like Metroid Prime Trilogy, World of Goo and the brilliant Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles but no current console has anything like that. Wii Remote Plus was a bit more annoying but only for 3D controls that needed calibration like Skyward Sword and Wii Sports Resort. Ironically, this game would be best played on Wii or older consoles with light gun.
Didn't this developer say that they are making Panzer Dragoon II years ago?
Gotta support this, maybe we'll even get hotd overkill... "I must return to the womb!"
@anoyonmus I honestly believe it would be better on PSVR. No diss to Labo, but it doesn't compare to PSVR. Then again, I'm not here to debate on what's better and such. I want everyone to be able to enjoy this in the best possible way.
The best experience would definitely be with Nintendo and PlayStation.
@Rafie yeah so therefore.
Nintendo and PlayStation would be best.
Heck even Oculus can do it too
House of the Dead Overkill was one of my favorite games on Wii. Hopefully they remaster that as well. AND MADWORLD!!! I'd love a Switch version of Madworld.
looks like it could be fun, if rather short. wonder if this will be switch exclusive, or will it come to other platforms?
@stevep I see. So this House of the Dead remake is the first one to be worth a damn, assuming the controls are good.
Also remake the rest of the House of The Dead games. Including Overkill. And then Ghost Squad while you're at it.
@Wavey84 I didn't realise it was the same people, well there'e less to do here, and upgraded visuals is all it needs. It's almost impossible to get wrong....watch this space.
@BongoBongo123 I am sure it is possible that we can play with just in handheld mode along with an optional motion controls.
I really hope this runs well on switch
Love the C-tier voice acting
Will there be a light gun for this? Maybe something the joycon can connect to?
