@soupwoman while I'm not giving an impression on Pratt until we here a bit more, I do feel the door is open for interpretation with Mario. Martinet is great, but I wouldn't really call what Nintendo does with the character a major flex in voice acting. He's a couple of "Mama Mia's" and "Here we/Let's-go's" above what they do with Link for sound clips. Charles himself IS a good voice actor, they just don't give him much to do with and the cartoonishly exaggerated voice they go with isn't really suitable for long form storytelling. Mario's voiced history is honestly all over the place. He had some brief periods in the hands of Peter "Optimus Prime" Cullen (but not the best Mario voice), and in Japan Toru Furuya (Yamcha, Tuxedo Mask, Amuro from Gundam). Then for the American cartoons he was initially Lou Albano, pro wrestler playing himself in a Mario costume (and slightly toned down for the animated voice overs). His replacement for the next two shows was also more of an actor than a VA and essentially was just Albano-lite. They leaned more into the Italian accent when they started pushing games out for computers of the time, like the typing game, but these were not great performances. Honestly, the best VA in his history is Furuya, and most people done even know he ever held the role lol. If you listen to a voice comparison, his performances run the gamut until Charles...and then that section is mostly just grunts and exclamations.
Maybe it's because I grew up on the pre-Martinet era, when Nintendo would cast someone to sound like a New Yorker when they wanted to give Mario plot and dialogue in media...but I think he sounded ok for what little we got. My baseline requirement for Mario has never been "whoo" and "wahoo." Those are cute game sound bytes, but it's not the voice in my head for Mario in anything needing more than one line at a time.
In all seriousness, though, this isn't unexpected. I had a similar issue requiring a total reinstall on PC with anniversary. Not 1:1 the same factor, as I did have some Bethesda mods in addition. However, I found that mass downloading the AE's Creation Club content caused problems. Instead, I went through and picked the ones that interested me, and downloaded them 1 by 1.
I also have AE on the Xbox, and while it didn't cause an immediate issue, it did seem to crash every hour or so. Also the house mods from CC had glaring graphical glitches.
It doesn't surprise me that Switch is experiencing these issues. While the lack of community mods does create a benefit of a lack of CC vs mod conflicts, it does also mean we don't have access to the community bugfix patch. That puts in a ton of work ironing out long-standing issues Bethesda never got around to.
@Silly_G that's not what the Creation Club stuff is. If you want a physical + DLC, any edition IS that. I know they sold the base release physical, I don't know if this upgrade has a corresponding physical rerelease. But the "DLC" is Hearthfire, Dawnguard, and Dragonborn. Those have been included for most editions since they all released. The CC, if you play any non-Steam (or PSVR) modern version of the game, the main menu has options to check out a mod menu (linked to a Bethesda account, containing free community mods) and the CC. The CC is just a second mod menu, however these are the Bethesda endorsed paid mods. The anniversary edition just takes a bunch of the better-regarded CC mods and gives them away - probably not worth the full price tag but it can be justified as an upgrade. Ghosts of the Tribunal and Saints & Seducers at some decent questline content, for example.
@SnohSkye I have to disagree with one part there. GoldenEye revolutionized CONSOLE shooters. Not the genre as a whole. As someone else noted, Half Life released not that long after. There were other titles that were making strides in mobility design and gunplay as well. GoldenEye succeeded in making people rethink movie tie in games (until then, mostly seen as awful), engaging 4 player multiplayer, and having intuitive controls for the platform. Prior to that, most if not all console FPS titles were ports of PC titles with lackluster multiplayer and controls that rarely did games justice. GoldenEye had some other tweaks to the formula, but my point is this largely made it work better on consoles. People can laugh at the current states of Call of Duty and Halo if they want, but it's disingenuous to not acknowledge Halo and CoD 4 didnt take that "console FPS" ball and sprint down the road to the point that we don't even make a distinction between console and PC fps anymore.
My point is that GE is important but for the time compared to its peers it is far from the most innovative title to come out. I noted earlier in the thread, I feel Perfect Dark trumped it in about every way (if we just want to talk about N64 shooters). And as far as innovating in the console space, GE wasn't the end of that road. This is subjective, but I personally find it dated. Some people are acting defensive at the idea, but "quality of life improvements" are common in gaming.
@wuntyme8 I wonder if that's why I'm not leaping for you the way so many are. Back in the N64 days, I loved Goldeneye but after Perfect Dark came out I didn't really look back. It had more going for it. Just a more refined experience, even without the license to make a Bond sequel.
And Perfect Dark has been on Xbox in all its glory with online multiplayer for ages now. Even before Rare Replay, they had put out the remaster on Xbox 360 like 12 years ago. Im good with that.
Just like Mortal Kombat last year. Not surprising, I don't even think they want to acknowledge the '93 film. Just think of it as a different pass at the same source material. This has as much to do with the old movie as that movie had with the Super Mario Bros Super Show tv series. I guess they could have followed in the Turtles' footsteps. The CGI reboot could be SMB, and then later we can get a live-action/CGI hybrid called "Mario Bros." lol
@Severian yea that movie was an adaptation of the series. I think he was referencing that incarnation was an American-produced film, so in the US we have two films we call The Avengers. Though as someone pointed out, the MCU film legally has "Marvel's" or "Marvel Studio's" slapped on. There are other examples though, like Total Recall. And some just slap "The" in front to be extra confusing (Suicide Squad and Predator franchises for example).
@belmont if you just wanted to make some last minute Wii U purchases, couldn't you make a UK Switch ID and link it? Obviously you wouldn't want to buy anything for your Switch with it. But since there's no crossover compatibility between the two, it shouldn't be much trouble, no?
Ok so is this guy just full of it? He started with "I have other SOURCES - not ONLY Capcom..." Emphasis mine, but those choices in words implied that he was referring to sources within Capcom, and more than one third party source as well. And in his retraction, now it has nothing to do with Capcom and he only has one independent source. Either he was lying the first time, or he spoke with a lawyer and decided he needed to recant things that hadn't been officially announced.
@JR150 Liu Kang at least should be distinct enough by this point to not be in too much trouble, should something like this become a serious change in policy. At least I hope so. I'm also curious how MUCH control the Lee estate (if they do pursue something like this in the future) can exert over homages. Like if Fei Long's face was altered a bit like how Liu's art style has evolved, and his story didn't go us on him being a celebrity martial artist going forward, would that be an issue? Like iirc I think The Last of Us had to tweak Ellie because she was too obviously inspired by Elliot Page (possibly also an issue with Page being in Beyond Two Souls) so they tweaked her face and she's basically evolved into just reflecting her voice actress.
Maybe it's just early and I'm not reading properly, but a 6 seems a little harsh for the content of the review. The sluggishness is a problem, but supposedly they've already pushed a day one patch so most players shouldn't deal with that. Of course it remains to be seen if the patch fixes it. So I understand that technical complaint. But aside from that, it seems like the game itself is falling to complaints about it not being remastered enough. Archaic menus? Chrono Cross' menu design is snappier than the Final Fantasy games of the era and I've never had trouble navigating them. Also, speaking on Final Fantasy - this site gave the Switch port of FF IX an 8/10, and it's the "other" big Square game from the same release year as Cross. That port was bare bones and the only remastering was some touchup work to the sprites which actually made the untouched backgrounds look worse. Here the background work is praised and the game is described as a delight - and compared to the NL reviews of FF ports, this stands proudly alongside...the mobile version of FF XV...huh.
@Anti-Matter and once again this article is comparing the service in relation to Nintendo Switch Online games. You have utterly failed to mention how that model meets your requirements better. Just saying. Physical vs digital is honestly a different conversation, this is literally comparing two digital subscription services. You're choosing to single one out and ignoring the fact that the other one (NSO) doesn't even let you buy the games to own.
@Ultimapunch that's a little unfair to how GP works. You can buy the games if you want, typically at a discounted rate. So no, that won't go away if the service does because the games in the service are literally games being sold on the platform. Sony and Nintendo run into the issue of having NSO games and PS Now divorced from their content shops, so it's just a Netflix-style rental kind of deal. Also for collection, I prefer it too but remember physical media can degrade, be broken, lost, stolen. And hardware erodes as well. There's arguments for both sides here. Like my Genesis stopped working a long time ago, but the copy of Sonic I bought ages ago on Steam works fine and on as many devices as I want to back it up on.
@Anti-Matter ok but that applies to NSO and moreso since you can't buy. This article is comparing those two services, so...🤷🏽♂️ And as a customer of all three systems/companies, when it comes to cross platform just get the one most accessible to you. But it's disingenuous to act like a third party game is a "copy" on Xbox. If you don't like the features or unique titles of Xbox enough to get one alongside a PlayStation that's perfectly valid. But the service does have it's appeal and it certainly has "kid" games on it. My 13 year old uses Game Pass more than I do (I'm more of a PS Now and Steam player in the house lol) and he's not a typical Fortnite kid. He likes platformers, strategy games, sims, etc.
@Anti-Matter tbf the context here is comparing to NSO. That's even less ownership, it's just a digital library. Game Pass you download games, there's discounts, and you can buy to own if they leave the service. If Nintendo decided to take games off the NSO line up, they'd just be gone. I understand digital vs physical collection in a more general sense, just saying it's not a negative in this case as compared to NSO. There are also arguments for digital in the collection space. It depends on the company, but the fact is Nintendo is pretty bad with this. Meanwhile Xbox is supporting 3 legacies consoles on their current model. Games you've owned digitally for over a decade download to a Series X/S just fine. And digital files can be dumped and preserves. You can dump a physical...but then you're again dealing with digital preservation. Your carts and discs aren't going to work forever and your hardware will fail too. It falls to companies supporting legacy content, and/or the emulation scene, to preserve. And Xbox is more respectful of their legacy content than Nintendo right now.
@Krull I'd just amend that to say no DOMESTIC handheld. I'm typing this from my Odin Pro, having stepped away from my currently docked GPD Win 3. Switch isn't the most powerful fish in the market pond, but Switch and the Deck have the benefit of local support and (compared to a GPD) lower cost.
@SwitchForce It's not "hatin," it's a legit question. You made some concerns/complaints that don't seem to line up with the actual product. For example, you're digging in on this notion the dock can't output. I'm GENUINELY curious why you think it can't output, when that is 100% the point of a dock. I'm typing this from my docked GPD Win 3 connected via HDMI to a monitor, and it works just as well if I unplug from the monitor and plug the exact same cable into one of my television sets. Steam Deck's dock has the same capability.
And you said a PC is dead weight when not plugged in. That's true of a desktop, but Steam Deck is designed as a portable device so it is more comparable to a laptop. It runs on a batter and doesn't need to be plugged in at all times.
Again, I'm not hating. I have had a similar device to the Deck for a year now, am using said device as we speak, and am just trying to correct you on the practicality of said devices.
@anoyonmus Sort of -Last I checked, you can still buy PSP games on the Vita and PS3 stores and transfer or use prior downloads to play them on a PSP (though if you have a Vita, I dunno why you'd want the extra step). It may not be ideal, but it is still available.
@SwitchForce I feel like you have some misconceptions. I don't have a Steam Deck yet, obviously, but I have a similar product. The GPD Win 3, which also has a dock. I've used the dock many times with my TV. The only difference between it and a Switch is just needing to navigate the Windows interface. If I launch something like Launchbox Big Box or Steam Big Picture first, and pair a controller, then drop it on the dock...it's a very similar experience as using a Switch.
You need a power source plugged into these devices AND the Switch if you want any long dock gaming. But they also all (Switch, Win 3, Steam Deck) play undocked and run off battery. So I am genuinely confused what your point is about power cords.
@Purgatorium I'm in the same boat! I've been tearing through a replay of Trigger (settled into the mobile version for convenience), with intent to play Cross next. I have it ready to go, but now with this coming in less than two months...
@Purgatorium try Duckstation. I downloaded it on off the PlayStore (it's on PC as well of course) after this announcement and ran my copy of Cross (I ripped my own disc long ago, emu police, stand down lol) at 1440p to compare to this trailer. Ran great. Cross used to be notoriously hard to emulate, but that hasn't been an issue for a bit.
@Ryu_Niiyama funny enough, I pre-ordered that for Stadia. They had some stupid cheap deal to get a free Chromecast/controller setup with it. I also am like the only person I know with very few complaints lol. Stadia got to play five hours earlier than other platforms, avoided the huge day one patch wait, and seems to run much more stable than console players report.
@Joriss I pre-ordered this ages ago, before it got delayed. You ask a fair question. I'll just say, for me, it's partly that I want a physical copy and I don't want to risk running into stock issues. That may be unlikely, but still. Also, usually Amazon will deliver on launch day for Prime subscribers, so I don't miss much time. Sure, a digital could be downloaded for midnight, but it's not that big a deal. Advanced Wars is a known enough quantity that I don't really need to read a bunch of reviews to know I want it.
@Damo They're charging $20, but it's in line with comparable Final Fantasy ports/remasters/whatever of the same generation. And cheaper than their Mana and Saga efforts, for whatever reason. I don't think it's unfair, for the value of the game (however old it may be). It's 1/3 the price of a new AAA game. I mean, Kemco titles on mobile sell for $8, and Chrono Cross is a drastically more enriching experience than any of those...I'd say than almost all of those combined. And those tend to go for $15+ when they come to console lol. I know value is subjective, but to me this is fine. If you want CC for $10 you can get it on PSN (assuming you have a PSP, Vita, or PS3) with no enhancements. Or just emulate it and crank the graphics up to 1080 or 1440 if you don't mind that option. But this also comes with Radical Dreamers, and looking more closely at the trailer that actually is something I'd have spent $10 on standalone anyway. I've spent that or more on visual novels over on Steam, you know? It's worth it to me to see RD officially localized for the first time and compare to the ancient fan translation that's circulated forever. And the font looks readable, while the original release is NOT easy on the eyes haha
I don't think it looks rough at all! Although, the issue might be in the marketing. Remaster is a stretch. This looks like a port. Emulate this with increased resolution settings and it'll look pretty much just like this. I'm not saying that all they did is wrap this in an emulator. The FF IX release has a similar look, and I know they did the up-res for that themselves. Either way, I'll take it. I'm running through Chrono Trigger now and planned to play Cross after. This looks better than my digital PS3 copy.
I'm that one weirdo who likes Tetra Master lol. Also, I grabbed KOTOR on the Switch around Christmas, and have been having fun with Pazaak.
@Funneefox I actually really like the service. I wouldn't go buy a device for it, but if you have one already I'd recommend trying it. At a glance, I can see it not looking appealing. The recommendations and top games are often very "mobile," because the casual mainstream likes the simpler stuff. But there's plenty core games there. Fantasian as mentioned is a very solid RPG from Mistwalker (Final Fantasy creator's studio, they made Blue Dragon and Last Story). Shantae and the Seven Sirens started on Apple Arcade before going to other platforms. Platinum has a hack and slash called World of Demons that I believe is still exclusive. Samurai Jack's adventure game (same as on other platforms that costs $40 elsewhere) is available. They have + games, which are older games updated and added over. I've ignored most of those since the good ones I mostly have and others are meh. But the ones I did get were Monster Hunter Stories and DoDonPachi Resurrection, which costs I think $20 to get outside the service. There's an Oregon Trail remake I like. Game of Thrones: A Tale of Crows is a fun decision story game you might like if you've played King of Dragon Pass out Six Ages. There's a bunch of indie games for different tastes. Inmost, Mutazion, Beyond a Steel Sky, Cardpocalypse, Neo Cab, Baldo, EarthNight, Dread Nautical, Necrobarista, Spelldrifter...I know I'm just listing off games so I'll stop lol. My point is I've gotten a ton of mileage and a lot of them are on other platforms and expensive so I've found myself just downloading them to my iPad instead.
@Would_you_kindly I didn't say they were an indie studio. I think there's some wiggle room between "indie studio" and Breath of the Wild or * insert PS4 game people want a Switch title to look like *
That's kind of a weird take. If a studio doesn't employ 400+ and make games that match your personal expectations, they are "indie" and should only release games at budget pricing?
@WallyWest I assume since the article says this only tracks physical retail copies that it is taking in Dying Light 2 on Xbox and PlayStation.
@moodycat I really enjoyed Dying Light 1. It just played well, and they took a fairly decent but generic idea (zombie hordes) from Dead Island and elevated it with freedom of movement. It has very fun parkour, and you unlock a grapple line that more or less makes you feel like Spiderman lol. Nights are pretty hectic, like Dead Rising 3, with super zombies hunting you as you dash for a safe house.
That said, I've seen literally no marketing for DL 2? I'm literally on my Xbox right now and you'd think they'd splash an add at me considering how many hours I logged into part one. That may be part of the problem.
@TheAwesomeBowser I actually kind of think that ball is in Nintendo's court. Pokemon is a multi-billion dollar meta-series, but Game Freak, despite being the house that builds the foundation, is probably the smallest entity. Until relatively recently, they pretty much just churned out relatively basic portable kid-accessible RPGs.
People bash these games for graphics, and Arceus itself is compared unflatteringly to Breath of the Wild. And also to old gen PS2 games. Game Freak employs I believe around 150-160 people. Looking over at Playstation, Insomniac (Spiderman PS4) has over 400 employees and Guerilla (Horizon) is over 350. Nintendo EDP, the studio behind Breath of the Wild, is a huge merged studio with over 800 staff including veterans of some of the greatest games Nintendo has ever put out. CD Project Red (Witcher 3) is of similar size. Bethesda GS (Skyrim) is I think around 400.
My point is Game Freak is a very modest sized studio in comparison, which is why I cut them slack. Nintendo did move their office closer a couple years ago. I think if we want a prettier Pokemon game, we need Nintendo to commit to a joint project and to funnel more resources into it. Game Freak alone just isn't the size for what people are demanding, nor does it have a background in graphically complex or open world console games. Their prettiest console titles are probably the gen 1 and gen 4 remakes, because they embraced a simpler cutesy art style.
@Primarina I have Shadow too! I never find other users in the wild haha. I also play with Stadia and GE Force Now. Stadia is a weird lil platform, and has all the concerning questions about ownership that are valid for this market. But you are 100% correct regarding Shadow and GFN as those are games you own, just running on servers you rent access to. I also have Game Pass, which yes lacks ownership but it's more or less a Netflix approach and I prefer it to GameFly. I don't have a problem with cloud gaming. You'd think I'd be the exact market for what Nintendo is doing here.
It just doesn't see play to the Switch's strengths, and all reports show the connections are less than optimal. Meanwhile on Stadia I played Cyberpunk 2077 and had almost none of the performance issues console players notably reported.
I actually don't hate on Kemco. I have more than I'd like to admit on mobile, and a couple for console. Many are pretty bad, especially older ones. Some are incredibly average. Some are actually pretty good. Like JRPG comfort food. Not a full meal, but still fun.
That said...who the heck is PRE-ordering a Kemco game...
I actually have this one downloaded lol. I haven't played it, but if anyone wants an impression I'll fire it up. It has an ad-supported free build too, if you want to try yourself.
@Stocksy What makes you say that? Obsidian and Bethesda still seem to be on track with their development plans.
I don't share the fears a lot of people have because studio acquisition has always been a thing. And I prefer it to the alternative, when a company goes under and the IP rights get tossed in a blender or lost (see: Telltale), or the company restructures to focus on other areas and leverage their IP in new and exciting ways (please read that with utmost sarcasm as I reference: Konami).
Sega's acquisition of Atlus has not seemed to harm Atlus as yet, and gave it some stability. Activision-Blizzard have some notable IP, so questions are hanging on what the plans will be. And I'm sure some folks will chafe at console exclusives. I tend to get multiple systems and do some pc gaming so that stuff doesn't strike me as inherently bad or harmful. I mean, does anyone who thinks this is killing the industry also chafe at Sony buying Insomniac and thus forcing any Marvel contracts Insomniac takes to be PS exclusive? What about Sony buying up Guerrilla I'm the mid 00s, leaving to for example the Horizon series being PS console exclusive (and PC, but I'm talking consoles mainly)? Sony picked up Bluepoint last year after they did the remake of Demons Souls. Speaking of, Sony cultivates exclusive third party support as well - Demons Souls, Bloodborne, FF VII Remake, I forget the name but Squenix has another upcoming exclusive. All the companies do this, I'm just noting it because when Nintendo does it people act like the game is being exiled and when Microsoft does it people act like they are greedily damaging the industry. But when Sony does, I mostly hear people praising the PlayStation exclusive library.
@Moistnado Sometimes people want new content, new characters, new story, etc. Sometimes a dev puts their own fun spin in a mechanic. And sometimes not haha. The "inspired by" category varies wildly in quality. But, there are a number of notable titles we probably take for granted today that started as this. If I'm not mistaken, the Mana series started out as "we love Zelda, what if we added some rpg leveling to things."
@Gwynbleidd I'm no math whiz, but if this is indeed the second time they mentioned it...you're a little off base. You clearly entered this article with the already held belief that this point had been brought up too much here, hurting the game. Yet, prior to this article, Nintendo Life wasn't really hammering some detrimental narrative. It didn't even come up in their review. They just reported on two statements FROM ASPYR regarding the matter.
@sanderev thank you for your research. I've been trying to pinpoint my hesitance to try a Switch cloud game. I'm a weirdo in that I actually have embraced streaming. I often use Steam Link and PS Play to play outside of my bedroom, I have subs to Game Pass, Luna, GE Force, PS Now, Stadia, and a cloud Shadow PC. I've basically spent the week playing Octopath on Stadia, and I actually have it physically on Switch and on Steam lol. So I haven't been able to figure why I refuse to try a Switch cloud game. It sounds like they have similar issues as PS Now, which if all the services I mentioned is the one I never recommend.
@kingbk I wonder if they just arent fans of the subscription model. They were fine offering it for sale on Virtual Console. I was messing around with it just two weeks ago on my Wii U lol
1. They (now) own the IP. It's funny seeing everyone grumble. Who's whining about the current Spiderman game franchise being Sony exclusive, because they kicked Insomniac a ton of money and then went and acquired the studio? Because Spiderman games have traditionally been multiplatform. Nintendo has exclusives that they don't even own, but they picked up publishing duties. Bayonetta 2 and 3? Does it make them sleazy just because they footed the bills?
2. Being that this is a Nintendo website... This was NEVER going to be on Switch. Sony players of course are feeling left out, but it may be worth pointing out PlayStation was always an afterthought for Bethesda. They started as a PC developer, and transitioned easily to working with the Xbox. Similar to Bioware, with Morrowind and KOTOR being two of the most notable feathers in the original Xbox's cap. Oblivion on PS3 was buggy but not terribly so, though that version has been forgotten while its counterparts are optimized on newer hardware. Fallout 3 and Skyrim were epically broken on PS3. Skyrim SE, while technically fine, put an insulting cap on the much touted mod support, 1/5th that of its Xbox One sibling. Mind you, a number of these issues arent strictly on Bethesda - Sony's architecture and policies are often at play.
Yea, if you are a primarily PlayStation player, this feels like a loss. I'm just saying, in a broader sense, that it has always been a troubled platform for this developer. Microsoft basically did what Sony did with Insomniac, and picked up a studio they have enjoyed a close relationship with for decades. So, if you don't see any injustice in the Insomniac Spiderman games not having a presence on Switch or Xbox, there's really no grounds to complain about this.
@FullMetalWesker it's absolutely true. KOTOR was one of the reasons I got an original Xbox, alongside the Ninja Gaiden reboot. It launched exclusively on the Xbox, but was ported to PC before the holidays.
I definitely disagree with the notion that this wasn't meant for controllers. Heck, I've been playing the Android port. You'd think that would be even more convenient than a mouse, and yet I keep finding myself drawn to popping my device into my GameSir controller to play. Now, if you want a game with combat somewhat similar to KOTOR, but feels limited on a controller compared to the PC version - that's a later Bioware game. Dragon Age: Origins.
I honestly don't get all the "dated" criticisms either. I feel some of the narrative and mission structure can be called dated, but mechanically the game is fine. Retro-style "real time with pause" RPGs are in these days. The attempt to move away from this style lead Bioware to Mass Effect. Compare ME 1 (which has a lot of KOTOR in its DNA) to ME 2 and 3. While I love those games to death, the fact is they just transitioned them into action shooters with rpg elements. Essentially changing the genre.
@Martijn87 Exactly. You can argue Nintendo doesn't currently stress about specs. But saying they were never about strong hardware is kind of informant. The NES stood above its competitors, the SNES was stronger than the Genesis/Mega drive and few other efforts caught any market share. N64 took a different path from the CD model, for good and ill. It wasn't a weak system by any means, although the cartridge format had some drawbacks compared to optical media. GameCube wasn't the king of it's gen, specswise, but it did take the silver medal. It was the Wii that changed their focus, and that left the Wii U in an unfortunate position. What generation was it? It was more powerful than its immediate rivals of 360 and PS3, but came out a stones throw away from X1 and PS4.
@Rob13 I can't help but compare. Why? Because I am in all three console ecosystems. I pay for both of the others' online services and game...borrow/stream services? Not sure what to call em lol. But Game Pass Ultimate, and PS Plus + PSNow. On the one hand, and in comparison, Nintendo is charging peanuts. On the other hand, I'm spending quite a lot on these things and Nintendo wants to double its price for...not much that appeals to me. These are some great games, that I already own multiple times over in many cases. I also have the Genesis collection and Konami's anniversary releases, so there isn't much in the Genesis catalogue I don't already have digitally on my Switch. I think I'm missing Ecco the Dolphin and MUSHA basically. Taken on its own merits, and to the right audience who hasn't been avidly buying this stuff over the years (and ideally someone who is into Animal Crossing), this isn't terrible. But for me, I can't really justify throwing Nintendo double the price, when Game Pass is dropping AAA games day and date of release.
Absolutely not. I have these on PS4 and PC (generous sale earlier this year via Epic). And I don't see any particular reason why prettied up PS2/PSP/3DS games can't be made to run on Switch. I can understand KH3 needing the cloud, or substantial effort porting that they may not want to pay for.
As an avid player of Game Pass cloud, Amazon Luna, PS Now, and Stadia... I suppose I've gotten comfortable with the "cloud." I've taken to buying physical if I want to collect, or in some cases for ease of play. For example, we have 2 3DS systems, and given how Nintendo restricts accounts it is much better to buy physical carts.
I'll check the PC version to see if my modest laptop can handle it (with all the Skyrim comparisons, I imagine I should be able to). But I wouldn't be adverse to the cloud option. I mean, if this popped up in Game Pass, I'd just fire it up. And I'd probably buy it on Stadia if that was an option.
Is worth noting, for anyone curious who has access to Skyrim outside of the Switch - the mod version of the game is still available for Skyrim. There are differences, of course. And more features to the independent game.
@brandonbwii there were, in fact, two SR games for the platforms you mentioned. Fairly different (my favorite is the Genesis version). This collection is from Steam, though the first two did hit mobile/tablets for a time.
I've only played the first but it's really fun, and I'm pretty stoked for this. I enjoyed the heck out out of Baldurs Gate on Switch.
This is a nice surprise! I missed this story but was recently lamenting that the ios version doesn't work anymore. I just googled it to see about importing a console release and...surprise! It came out locally 3 days ago haha

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of Mario's Movie Voice?
Re: Poll: So, What Do You Think Of Mario's Movie Voice?
Maybe it's because I grew up on the pre-Martinet era, when Nintendo would cast someone to sound like a New Yorker when they wanted to give Mario plot and dialogue in media...but I think he sounded ok for what little we got. My baseline requirement for Mario has never been "whoo" and "wahoo." Those are cute game sound bytes, but it's not the voice in my head for Mario in anything needing more than one line at a time.
Re: Skyrim Anniversary Switch Players Seem To Be Experiencing Performance Issues
Performance issues? In Skyrim? Surely you jest.
Re: Surprise! Skyrim Anniversary Edition Is Out Now On The Switch eShop
Re: GoldenEye 007 Is Returning To Nintendo Switch
Re: GoldenEye 007 Is Returning To Nintendo Switch
@wuntyme8 I wonder if that's why I'm not leaping for you the way so many are. Back in the N64 days, I loved Goldeneye but after Perfect Dark came out I didn't really look back. It had more going for it. Just a more refined experience, even without the license to make a Bond sequel.
And Perfect Dark has been on Xbox in all its glory with online multiplayer for ages now. Even before Rare Replay, they had put out the remaster on Xbox 360 like 12 years ago. Im good with that.
Re: Rumour: The Mario Movie's True Title Probably Won't Shock Anyone
Re: Random: Pokémon Voice Actor Shares His Take On Shadow The Hedgehog
Thought this was interesting. It's based on Shadow's modern voice, but it's lines from SA2 where he had that smarmy evil British voice lol
Re: PSA: It's The Final Countdown For 3DS And Wii U eShop Credit Card Payments (North America)
@belmont if you just wanted to make some last minute Wii U purchases, couldn't you make a UK Switch ID and link it? Obviously you wouldn't want to buy anything for your Switch with it. But since there's no crossover compatibility between the two, it shouldn't be much trouble, no?
Re: Bruce Lee's Family Responds To Suggestion That Fei Long Won't Appear In Future Street Fighters
Re: Review: Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition - A Fair Port For Chrono Trigger's Follow-Up
Maybe it's just early and I'm not reading properly, but a 6 seems a little harsh for the content of the review.
Re: Video: Switch Online Could Learn A Lot From Xbox Game Pass
@Anti-Matter and once again this article is comparing the service in relation to Nintendo Switch Online games. You have utterly failed to mention how that model meets your requirements better. Just saying. Physical vs digital is honestly a different conversation, this is literally comparing two digital subscription services. You're choosing to single one out and ignoring the fact that the other one (NSO) doesn't even let you buy the games to own.
Re: Video: Switch Online Could Learn A Lot From Xbox Game Pass
Re: Video: Switch Online Could Learn A Lot From Xbox Game Pass
@Anti-Matter ok but that applies to NSO and moreso since you can't buy. This article is comparing those two services, so...🤷🏽♂️
And as a customer of all three systems/companies, when it comes to cross platform just get the one most accessible to you.
Re: Video: Switch Online Could Learn A Lot From Xbox Game Pass
Re: Obsidian's RPG Pillars Of Eternity II: Deadfire Appears To Have Been Cancelled For Switch
Re: Poll: Triangle Strategy Is Out Today On Nintendo Switch, Will You Be Getting It?
Mine is shipping so I should get it early afternoon tomorrow!
Re: Random: Here's Steam Deck Running The GameCube And Wii Emulator Dolphin
Re: Video Game History Foundation Calls Out Nintendo's "Destructive" 3DS & Wii U eShop Closure
@anoyonmus Sort of -Last I checked, you can still buy PSP games on the Vita and PS3 stores and transfer or use prior downloads to play them on a PSP (though if you have a Vita, I dunno why you'd want the extra step). It may not be ideal, but it is still available.
Re: Random: Here's Steam Deck Running The GameCube And Wii Emulator Dolphin
Re: Chrono Cross Is Getting A Remaster, And Boy Does It Look Rough
@Purgatorium I'm in the same boat! I've been tearing through a replay of Trigger (settled into the mobile version for convenience), with intent to play Cross next. I have it ready to go, but now with this coming in less than two months...
Re: Chrono Cross Is Getting A Remaster, And Boy Does It Look Rough
@Purgatorium try Duckstation. I downloaded it on off the PlayStore (it's on PC as well of course) after this announcement and ran my copy of Cross (I ripped my own disc long ago, emu police, stand down lol) at 1440p to compare to this trailer. Ran great. Cross used to be notoriously hard to emulate, but that hasn't been an issue for a bit.
Re: Where To Pre-Order Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp On Switch
@Ryu_Niiyama funny enough, I pre-ordered that for Stadia. They had some stupid cheap deal to get a free Chromecast/controller setup with it. I also am like the only person I know with very few complaints lol. Stadia got to play five hours earlier than other platforms, avoided the huge day one patch wait, and seems to run much more stable than console players report.
Re: Where To Pre-Order Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp On Switch
@Joriss I pre-ordered this ages ago, before it got delayed. You ask a fair question. I'll just say, for me, it's partly that I want a physical copy and I don't want to risk running into stock issues. That may be unlikely, but still. Also, usually Amazon will deliver on launch day for Prime subscribers, so I don't miss much time. Sure, a digital could be downloaded for midnight, but it's not that big a deal. Advanced Wars is a known enough quantity that I don't really need to read a bunch of reviews to know I want it.
Re: Chrono Cross Is Getting A Remaster, And Boy Does It Look Rough
Re: Chrono Cross Is Getting A Remaster, And Boy Does It Look Rough
I don't think it looks rough at all! Although, the issue might be in the marketing. Remaster is a stretch. This looks like a port. Emulate this with increased resolution settings and it'll look pretty much just like this. I'm not saying that all they did is wrap this in an emulator. The FF IX release has a similar look, and I know they did the up-res for that themselves. Either way, I'll take it. I'm running through Chrono Trigger now and planned to play Cross after. This looks better than my digital PS3 copy.
Re: Zelda-Like 'Oceanhorn 2' Adds Card Game, But It's Not On Switch
Re: UK Charts: Pokemon Legends: Arceus Still On Top Despite Release Of Dying Light 2
Re: UK Charts: Pokemon Legends: Arceus Still On Top Despite Release Of Dying Light 2
Re: UK Charts: Pokemon Legends: Arceus Still On Top Despite Release Of Dying Light 2
Re: Digital Foundry Gives Its Assessment Of Cloud Gaming On Switch
Re: JRPG 'Sword Of Elpisia' Slashes Its Way To Switch Next Month
I actually don't hate on Kemco. I have more than I'd like to admit on mobile, and a couple for console. Many are pretty bad, especially older ones. Some are incredibly average. Some are actually pretty good. Like JRPG comfort food. Not a full meal, but still fun.
That said...who the heck is PRE-ordering a Kemco game...
I actually have this one downloaded lol. I haven't played it, but if anyone wants an impression I'll fire it up. It has an ad-supported free build too, if you want to try yourself.
Re: Xbox Boss "Trusts" Nintendo To Not Do Anything That Would Harm The Games Industry
Re: Ocean's Heart Is A Cute Zelda-Inspired Adventure Destined For Switch
@Moistnado ah, so you're talking along the lines of a typical Kemco release (for example)
Re: Ocean's Heart Is A Cute Zelda-Inspired Adventure Destined For Switch
@Moistnado Sometimes people want new content, new characters, new story, etc. Sometimes a dev puts their own fun spin in a mechanic. And sometimes not haha. The "inspired by" category varies wildly in quality. But, there are a number of notable titles we probably take for granted today that started as this. If I'm not mistaken, the Mana series started out as "we love Zelda, what if we added some rpg leveling to things."
Re: Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Getting Patch To Fix That Giant Bloody Text Box
Re: Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Getting Patch To Fix That Giant Bloody Text Box
@SSGodLink Oh yes, their support is the best isn't it?
-Cries in Jade Empire on mobile-
Re: Video: Here's A Sneak Peek Of Dying Light 2's 4-Person Co-op Mode
Re: Nintendo Is Adding Paper Mario 64 To Switch Online's Expansion Pack, Out Next Week
@kingbk I wonder if they just arent fans of the subscription model. They were fine offering it for sale on Virtual Console. I was messing around with it just two weeks ago on my Wii U lol
Re: Random: This $10 Nintendo Switch eShop Game Has Suddenly Shot Up To A Whopping $250
By Grabthar's hammer... What a savings.
Re: Phil Spencer: Elder Scrolls 6's Xbox Exclusivity Isn't About "Punishing" Other Platforms
Re: Review: STAR WARS: Knights Of The Old Republic - Still Strong With The Force Despite Dated Design
Re: "I Don't Think The Switch Needs A More Powerful Version" Says 'World War Z' Lead Designer
Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Price?

No code for me and I'm not holding my breath. The Trainer's Club likes to periodically uncheck my newsletter preferences.
Re: Random: Ever Wonder What Metroid's Samus Aran Would Look Like In Marvel vs. Capcom 2?
I can honestly say I've never wondered what a flagship Nintendo character would look like in "Marvel" vs "Capcom" lol
Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting The "Cloud Versions" Of Kingdom Hearts On Switch?
Absolutely not. I have these on PS4 and PC (generous sale earlier this year via Epic). And I don't see any particular reason why prettied up PS2/PSP/3DS games can't be made to run on Switch. I can understand KH3 needing the cloud, or substantial effort porting that they may not want to pay for.
Re: Review: The Forgotten City - Cloud Version - A Skyrim Mod Turned Gripping Narrative Time Loop
Re: The Shadowrun Trilogy Is Coming To Nintendo Switch In 2022
@brandonbwii there were, in fact, two SR games for the platforms you mentioned. Fairly different (my favorite is the Genesis version). This collection is from Steam, though the first two did hit mobile/tablets for a time.
I've only played the first but it's really fun, and I'm pretty stoked for this. I enjoyed the heck out out of Baldurs Gate on Switch.
Re: Cave's Shmup Espgaluda II Locks In A September Switch Release For The West
This is a nice surprise! I missed this story but was recently lamenting that the ios version doesn't work anymore. I just googled it to see about importing a console release and...surprise! It came out locally 3 days ago haha
