The 2005 LucasArts release Star Wars: Republic Commando appears to be en route to the Nintendo Switch.
Well-known dataminer @NWPlayer123 has spotted a Nintendo server update that seemingly confirms Aspyr Media is publishing Republic Commando on the Switch. Aspyr is the same team that has ported across Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Star Wars Racer.
Stars Wars: Republic Commando is a first-person squad-based shooter that was originally exclusive to the Xbox and PC and gained a bit of a cult following. This would obviously mark the first time it's ever been released on a Nintendo platform.
If we get a more official update about this one, we'll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, tell us in the comments if this would be a Star Wars game you would be interested in playing on Switch.

Well I like my FPS. I’m in.
This game is insanely underrated.
Was a great Xbox game, the companion novels were a really good read too !!
Just skipped trough a longplay and was not impressed on first look. Reading the positive comments here makes me reconsider though. A bit of SW is never a bad thing.
I so want this to be real. If EA/Disney won’t give the Switch new Star Wars games, then keep bring on the classics, KotoR 1 & 2 next please. Then OG Battlefront 2 after that.
!! This would be a Day One if I didn't still have my original Xbox disc. Very cool game.
I missed out on this on the OG Xbox mainly because back then their were so many Star Wars games on all three systems and you could actually pick and choose which ones appealed to you most. So I would be up for giving this game a go since it was one of the better received games. Just wouldn't mind the KOTOR, Rogue Squadron and original two Battefront games getting releases and maybe the Starfighter games as it really was the best time for variety in Star Wars games.
SW Battlefront 2 was so good. Please Nintendo!
Yes please. I played it on PC and loved it back when it came out. Love Star Wars love fps, so I'm in. Hope it's real.
Oh HECK yes!!! Now if Battlefront 2 Classic could get there as well, I'd be a very happy person
Oh this is great! I have it on PC but - I know it's sacrilege to say - keyboard and mouse controls just don't fit me for FPS titles. I'd love to get this on Switch!
(But how about the Rogue Squadron games next?)
I'm in just get me a mask a bad aim and I'm ready to go.
Hope the online isn't broken like Jedi Knight and it allows you to play with friends
Yeah, this game is solid as hell. Have not been too impressed with Aspyr's ports this far...
Hopefully, this road continues on to Rogue Squadron Trilogy.
Also, would love to see the original Atari Arcades
I'VE BEEN HOPING FOR THIS!
Never played it but always was very interested in it coming to a system I own.
@WhiteTrashGuy The ports really feel like some homebrew emulation yeah. With the askew opening screens and all.
Still happy somebody is doing it though. I personally would love way more ports of older games on Switch.
Loved Racer, haven't tried any of the others. Fingers crossed the Rogue Squadron games see the light of day again at some point.
@locky-mavo yes. This should happen. I would like to see another star wars game come to switch.
I would also like to see the Force Unleashed 1 and the
Force Unleashed 2. Those would be great on switch. I have Force Unleashed 1 on my Wii and it was really fun using the Wiimote as a lightsaber
I haven't played this in years, so the nostalgia glasses may be rose-tinted, but I remember it being very good.
Cool if this did come to Switch, though I'd pass personally as I already have it on Steam (and this makes me want to give it a go).
Me and my brother used to play star wars the force unleashed 1 and 2 on wii.
@anoyonmus I just typed that and then read your comment
@OnlyItsMeReid I have Force Unleashed 1 on the Wii and its so fun.
I hope they remaster it to bring it to the switch.
@Yanina
I picked up Jedi Knight II day one and was not impressed. It's the reason I have not picked up JKIII or RACER yet. REPUBLIC COMMANDO seems like it would be hard to screw up.
Anything from pre-Disney era is welcome, even Kinect Star Wars.
@Yanina yeah, I'm looking at a play through...the combat looks somewhat bland so far, but I'm intrigued by the potential. If it is cheap, I will consider it...more so if there is some online multiplayer.
I will buy any Star Wars game that comes to Switch. I have this one on my XB1. I’ve only played a little, but it seems cool. I’d be down for playing more Switch. What I really want is some more of the old Nintendo Star Wars games, though. Super Star Wars trilogy, Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron trilogy (and Battle for Naboo)...those are the games I REALLY care about. Oh, and unrelated to Nintendo, bring KOTOR over already. But yeah, this would be a welcome addition too.
@JohnnyC
Are there any barriers in the way to that happening?
SW Bounty Hunter was fun on PS2. Bring that over next.
ROGUE SQUADRON WHEN?!?!
Tbh, this game was pretty fun. I got it on Xbox for free, though.
I’d love to play it. Hope it comes soon!
Nice, slowly getting all the good Star Wars games.
Oh hell yes! I haven’t played this since it’s original release!
@BongoBongo123 I'm hoping Aspyr are just working their way through the Lucasarts library one at a time and will get to them eventually
Oh hell yes this game is very underrated. It does start off a little slow but once you get all your squad together and learn the command system oh boy can it be really fun. The story and relationship between the commandos are very fleshed out. By the end of the game (its unfortunately not very long) you feel so attached to the commandos that it makes it very sad the adventure is over. Back in the day this game got me deep into the novels by Karen Traviss so much that I was very heartbroken when she wasn't allowed to finish off the series. The books were killer!!
I played through it multiple times on PC so I'm not too sure I'll do it again. If I remember correctly the multiplayer for it was very very basic and nothing spectacular. Maybe I'll purchase just for the sake of supporting the developers to encourage more of these releases. Also I've noticed there's something special about playing games on the Switch (especially re-releases) that make it more worth while. I highly recommend it whether you're a casual or higher Star Wars fan. Just remember the mechanics and game play are from 2005 so it will definitely feel very 2005 throughout the game. At the time it was innovative and current but definitely not by today's standards. There has been a lot of advancements in these types of games since then by far to make this one way behind. Still a blast though if you let it be
@JohnnyC Yeah same. I just thought that with the new movie being call Rogue Squadron they might leave the release of the game version namesake until closer to release of the movie.
Ah yes, the Star Wars game that was most in need of a sequel and never got one. Here's hoping (if this port does happen) that it raises the possibility for a Canon remake/reboot, as this game had so much potential that mostly went unutilised (that, and there hasn't really been a game that's handled the squad-mechanic quite like this one).
In the meantime though, I wouldn't mind a port of Shadows of the Empire and/or Rogue Squadron (even if it's just the original).
nahh not again lol
Rogue Leader now!!!!
maybe the Indiana Jones titles will come to Switch as well?
Never heard of it. Is it any good?
Now all we need is confirmation of Rogue Squadron, Battlefront 2 and TFU 1 and we'll have all the heavy hitters on the same console!
Nice, maybe Bounty Hunter next? Take advantage of the popularity of a certain Star Wars TV show why not.....
@Angelic_Lapras_King Agreed! I would love to re experience Bounty Hunter on the Switch! The Mandalorian’s success has created a market for it.
No way. I'll buy this. I always wanted to play it on the Xbox, but just never got round to it. I always heard good things about it. Hope this is true
Oh YES! Absolutely LOVED this game. Really great and adds to the canon of the overall universe. Hope online multiplayer comes with the package. Amazing amazing game!
Oh, heck yes. Hope this is legit and soon.
Looking forward to this. I hope it has gyro aim. And rooting for Battlefront
Watching gameplay of this makes me want to play Metroid Prime.
One, of the best Star Wars games, EVER.
That's great! I remember playing this briefly on a friend's Xbox back when it came out. Would check it out, although Bounty Hunter is the one I'd love to see come back. BH is playable on PS4, but it's based on the slightly inferior PS2 version
Brilliant game, sound track wasn’t half bad too. Only bad thing was the super battle droids were bullet sponges, apart from that it was a refreshing take on the Star Wars license
One of the few good Star Wars games. It's dated a bit going back to it now, but the core of it is decent enough. I'd buy into it again.
The previous Star Wars games were Direct announcements (Jedi Outcast in September 2019 Direct, Jedi Academy and Episode 1 Racer in March 2020 Direct Mini), hopefully the same is true here.
Oh hell yes! I urge everyone to check out the amazing Republic Commando novel series by Karen Traviss. Truly something special!
@BongoBongo123 Hollywood doesn't seem to be that bothered about linking up with game release dates any more. Assassin's Creed, Tomb Raider, even the Lego games haven't managed it.
Instant buy from me
I got this free on Xbox GWG last year.
Anyways. This leak is probably for real looking at their past ports.
Nice! So Rogue Squadron next? KOTOR maybe?
This is a great game. Cannot wait. That is all.
I'm finally gaining some respect for Disney in terms of Star Wars games. They take half the blame for neglecting the Switch (other side is EA, but Apex Legends gives me hope of other EA ports), but finally we're getting more Star Wars games. Not just any, but the CLASSIC ones.
If I see the Rogue Squadron trilogy and the original Battlefront games, I will be very happy.
I remember testing out this game on a pc I had recently upgraded way back in the day, never played the full version of the game and I am stoked to be possibly able to do it now. Now if we could just get KOTOR, I would be in heaven.
I got Jedi Knight II and wasn't impressed. That game hasn't aged well and playing with the gamepad is akward at times. This is not Aspyr's, but I would have loved some kind of refining with the controls.
Given that Republic Commando already had a console release, I'm a bit more excited of having it on Switch, but not more than "catiously optimistic"
I'm currently loving Dark Forces, though I got sidetracked with other games and haven't finished it yet. But more Star Wars first-person action sounds good to me.
Has there been a confirmed released date yet? Will it be a new updated version or just like the original?
I would also really love
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic also 😍
@Dman10 ya I have that on my GameCube and really liked I back then. Could be fun to run through it again.
Day 1 I'm in, only game besides steamworld dig & heist that i have played through twice to the end, loved it on PC but to have it on the switch would make my lockdown
I would buy on day one. Bring on the old battlefront games too.
@Ganner I have to give it credit! Dated mechanics for a shooter, but the squad mechanics were better than in Halo 5 (which is a spiritual successor with some of the same devs)
I never had an XBOX, so I didn't even know this game existed. I watched a short gameplay video of it and I couldn't help but notice that this game seems to have some elements that may have inspired DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal with the character looking at his helmet before putting it on and him also having a blade on his left arm for melee.
Of all the Star Wars games out there, I've only ever played Star Wars Racer, Rogue Squadron, & Rogue Squadron II. I know Racer is already on the Switch - I just have to get my Joy-Con's repaired - so here's hoping that Aspyre can get their hands on Rogue Squadron I, II, & III for more ports!
@gojiguy so dissapointng jedi outcast or academy academy doesnt have local multiplayer offline. A offline couch co-op mode vs bots would go such a long way.
They need to update these games more or remake them while also having the original game available with a few tweeks. Never played republic commando but local co-op and multiplayer would again make these games that much more appealing this game morso since its a tactical squadron shooter.
All I ever wanted is star wars battlefront 2 OG remake/update with the option to play galatic conquest in drop in drop out co-op 4 player offline couch co-op and online co-op.
I read this quickly and thought Knights of the Old Republic was coming to the Switch; I never had an XBox and didn't have a chance to play that game. That would have been exciting news.
This game was amazing. I've been waiting for this to be ported for a while! Just add in online servers and ideally online co-op, and this will be a true gem.
I'll also throw in my hat to the Battlefront2Classic porting bandwagon! That game was incredible. Online multiplayer with that would be so fun.
