Original Article (Thu 11th Feb, 2021 16:00 GMT): Celebrations surrounding Pokémon's upcoming 25th anniversary continue, as it has now been announced that Pokémon Sword and Shield will soon receive a special Pikachu.
Starting from 25th February, players will be able to get their hands on a special variant of Pikachu that knows the move 'Sing'. Pikachu cannot usually learn Sing, so this digital rodent will truly be one-of-a-kind.
A special code that will let you receive the Pikachu will be shared on that date, so make sure to stay tuned for updates if you're keen on adding this one to your team. Last year, Sword and Shield players could also claim special Pikachu wearing a variety of hats inspired by Ash Ketchum, the protagonist of the Pokémon anime.
Earlier today, The Pokémon Company also unveiled plans to host a special virtual concert featuring American rapper Post Malone.

odd, I guess this is because of the concert coming up.
I will name it Katy Perry if it's a girl and Post Malone if it's a boy
I thought it was a special Pikachu who's cry was replaced with some singing
I guess a Pikachu with the move Sing makes more sense tho
Imagine a Pikachu with a customizable song that it sang as its cry, visualizes Rick Astley
Would you look at that high quality sing animation! Truly worthy of a multi million dollar franchise!
I think they’re a little obsessed with Pikachu.
Would’ve been more cool if it actually sung. :/
Why is extra content in Pokemon games nowadays so barebones and lifeless? We used to get new areas with little side stories surrounding legendary Pokémon like Darkrai, Deoxys, spikey-eared pichu and Celebi, Victini, and Meloetta. Now we literally have to pay for that in DLC, along with the post-game.
I really wish Pokémon had never changed from sprites to models. Not because I like sprites more than models, but because they actually put time into them, and they even animated them in BW. A 2D game has better idle animations than a 3D game. Think about that for a second. Something happened in that transition that made Gamefreak and TPC stop putting life into their worlds.
That animation.. Pikachu leans foward and unnaturally moves side to side.
Give us Surfing Pikachu.
@Yosher Beat me to it. That animation looks more appropriate on hypervoice or something. Maybe metal sound.
Pikachu poses for traing card photo.
Well, well, well. How the turntables.
Imagine losing because of a singing Pikachu.
@-Juice- Event PM like the ones you mentioned are still free and aren't DLC, the DLC just gave you what the "3rd" game would have gave you. Did you have problems with Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum and the Ultra games? If not then its hypercritical to moan about the DLC. As for bare bones post game well welcome to most PM games what aren't the 3rd games or remakes.
This is pretty cool mainly because something like this has real value over time in trading groups what only trade legit stuff.
In the original cartoons, if Jiggly puff was jealous of pikachu before, oh wow, she would need a 12 pack of sharpee markers, to take it out on pikachu now.
I miss the old Powersave days where I could just duplicate a Pokemon and have one on each one of my games. Or if I somehow missed out I could just download it no problem.
Meta-defining move from Game Freak, can't wait to see how this shakes up the game.
That is Boring
Glad we're in an ubers VGC right now. Not interested in more coin flip sing RNG deciding games.
I just wish it wasn't Pikachu since I already have like 8 or 9 variants of that Pokemon.
I guess it's a neat tie-in? We used to get Pikachu that knew stuff like surf or fly, and there's various other things that aren't really obtainable that hasn't been distributed yet, so by comparison this seems...pretty lame...
@FroZtedFlakerZz How about Katy Pika, or Pika Malone instead?
@Yosher : Not as good as that Double Kick animation.
1. Hop on spot.
2. Footprint-shaped flash appears on opposing Pokémon.
3. Repeat.
@Silly_G Yes, this is an absolutely brilliant animation, nothing can top this surely.
@swagbag713 @FroZtedFlakerZz : Game Freak kind of already did that with Chatot in Gen IV, where you could record a custom cry for its signature move Chatter via the DS/3DS microphone.
The ability to customise its cry was removed from Gen VI though, sadly.
I would actually love a Let's Go Chatot game provided that it comes with a special Joy-Con with an in-built microphone. A lot of brilliant ideas can come to fruition there.
Name your singing Pikachu with : 🤭

@Markiemania95
Surfing Pikachu has been given out in events before but you can get one in US or UM as part of the game.
@Fandabidozi I know. I have a Surfing Pikachu of my own in HG/SS. It’s just a lot more useful than Sing, and I refuse to succumb to the extortionate paywall that is HOME, just to pass a handful of Pokémon up.
Yeah no.. I'll pass on the Past Malone CGI nightmare fuel.
@Markiemania95
Yeah, having to pay for Bank, Home, Switch Online and both DLC’s is a lot. Home isn’t that great either. You have to use the phone app to do some things and it won’t even sort the Pokémon in your Home boxes. You’re not missing go out on much tbh.
What will they think of next?
Can't wait to find a "Pikachu Singing For 10 Hours" vid in my YT recommendations...
@WallyWest I know it isn’t DLC. I’m venting my frustration at all of the compound problems and practices that I’m seeing with the franchise 🙂
I was lead to believe the Pikachu actually sang and not just knew the move Sing.
Give us Pikachu that knows Explosion while you’re at it, have Pikachu be able to End Game itself because it sure won’t do the team any favors alive.
@V_Va
Release a pikachu that only knows faint moves to maximize potential:
Self destruct
Explosion
Memento
Lunar Dance
the Pikachu's that have Surf in Pokemon Go are more exiting that this
Guess I’ll be singing as soon as I get home!
@FroZtedFlakerZz
Haha, absolutely ad hoc
@-Juice- Probably to future proof it. Because if the Pikachu had to play a unique soundclip every time it was used they would have to either keep it stuck in 8 Gen, like they did Spiky Eared Pichu in Gen 4 or the Dress Up Pikachu in Gen 6. It's less laziness and more making sure the unique Pokemon can be transferred to future generations rather than making a unique file/dex entry every time they make a new Pokemon-gen wasting resources for a one time give-a-way.
The Ashcap Pikachus appear to be an exception because they are easier to give-a-way and can be more obvious of their specialty.
@Wexter oh wow, an actual voice of reason.
I'm still salty about that gen 4 situation lol
@Kisame83 Yeah that Pichu still stings... But, at least the Ash Cap Pikachus have carried over and I do enjoy those Mon a lot!
Hasn't he got enough attention already? Why not a pokemon that ACTUALLY sings? What about Jigglypuff or Chatot?
@Yosher first off gamefreak is not a multi billion dollar company, just because their publishers are doesn’t insure they get most of the wealth, second off do you just repeat the same thing over and over like a broken record whenever the word pokemon is uttered? Do you just look up the word pokemon to respond with “hurr durr multi billion dollar company” ? Pokemon fans get a hobby challenge
@Tuney Whoever is in charge of the pokemon franchise certainly has the ability to say, hey, let's actually fund the next pokémon project more and make a quality product. There's no denying that. You can't convince me they do not have the resources to do this.
And I know I say it a lot which I apologize for, I'll try to tone it down. It's just that, as a long time pokémon fan, it breaks my heart to see the state of the series right now, pokémon used to stand for quality, but that time is unfortunately long gone in my eyes. Still, sorry for complaining so much.
@Yosher the graphics don’t affect the game’s quality, this is fact. Second off the idea that uninteresting battle animations are a new thing is stupid, they always had that, even when they evolved into the ds they refused to even give the pokemon different sprites for when they fought, just a still image while a png of a fire ball rolls around them meanwhile an actual legit kingdom hearts game can run on the same console. And pokemon and nintendo run the funding, gamefreak, the studio that develops the game has no say on the funding, deadlines etc. Please do your research
@Tuney Hence why I said the ones in charge of the funding. And please, stop acting like I expect super fluid animations everywhere. All I'm asking for, is a world that doesn't freeze where ladders are being climbed, where pokemon using a kick move actually kick and don't awkwardly just hop up and down in their idle animation, where beam moves actually come from where the pokemon would use said beam (like Charizard actually blowing flames from its mouth). This last part in particular was something pokémon stadium already did back in the day and I find it baffling that they don't do it in the newer games.
I never had a problem with the sprites by the way. The sprites, despite being still images for the most part, had a lot more personality put into them than a lot of the 3D animations in these games. And honestly I'd love if they would just go back to using sprites because they were just that much better in my eyes, unless you take pokemon stadium into the equation, which had really good animations.
Honestly, in 3D animation, little things like I mentioned before just matter more to make it feel more alive and actually immersive. When I see the poor animation quality in these new 3D pokemon games, I lose all immersion and stop having fun with it and it becomes more of a chore.
And that's not even getting into the dumb gimmicks like dynamaxing being shoved down player's throats but that is admittedly more of a personal preference so, whatever in that front.
@Yosher the reason climbing freezes the game is so pokemon don’t wait for you in the end of the stairs thus trapping you
@Tuney Lol if that's true then that's a very sad reason.
