As you've likely seen by now, Square Enix has announced a sequel to the Nintendo DS classic, The World Ends With You.
Not long after NEO: The World Ends With You for the Switch and PlayStation 4 was revealed, Persona 5 began trending on social media platforms like Twitter. The reason? As noted by Gamerant, some people supposedly think The World Ends With You sequel looks a little too similar to P5, which has resulted in the topic blowing up online.
It didn't take long for TWEWY fans to point out that the original DS title was released well before the existence of P5.
One similarity that apparently keeps popping up is that both JRPGs are set in Tokyo and feature the Shibuya shopping district. The aesthetics of both games are also being compared. A lot of tweets are now joking about how everything is a Persona 5 rip-off, according to this game's fanbase.
Again though, TWEWY was released in 2007 - about nine years ahead of Persona 5's original release on PlayStation platforms. Perhaps at best, it's drawn some inspiration - even then, this sequel seems to simply be staying true to the original's design. What do you make of all this? Leave a comment down below.

Well to be honest my first thought when i saw twewy2 trailer is that it looks a little like Persona 5.I played original tweedy back in the day so i know its way older than persona 4 or 5.
Just when the hardcore fans get their big moment, the smooth brains come on in to steal the spotlight
This is fricking hilarious. No, this isn't a P5 rip-off.
And I hate how fanboys are already saying that P5 is better than TWEWY2 even though TWEWY2 DIDN'T EVEN RELEASE YET.
cough, @Kimyonaakuma
Don't judge a book by its cover.
Do people know that locations in both games rip off Japan, I mean they made those places first.
This article panders to the intellect of people who play Persona and Fifa.
Who would have thought that could be a thing.
Oh lord. Lemme guess, these are ‘Persona fans’ in the sense that they post comments everywhere begging for the game to come to Switch because they haven’t even bloody played a game in the series. It’s not even as if you go to the distinct Shibuya areas in Persona 5 like much at all. TWEWY is a much more accurate recreation that incorporates the different streets and areas. This stuff does my head in.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand You don't need to play it to see which looks better, but this was probably made on a smaller budget and covers more of Tokyo.
As for gameplay we'll need to wait and see, but you don't need to try and call me out for my comments on the graphics. This isn't YouTube drama - I don't need any attempts to expose or cancel me, thanks
@JustMe oh dang, you are right. For some reason I always think that Tokyo came first. Its still crazy that Tokyo would just completely rip off P5 like that. I mean they could at least give P5 some credit.
There's never a shortage of stupid people saying stupid things on social media. It's usually best to just ignore them.
@BenAV Yeah, usually. But it's way more fun to make fun of them!
It's funny when you consider that the original TWEWY came out before Persona 4.
And Jet Set Radio released before all of these games, and it's arguably the first game to feature an explorable Shibuya hub.
These types of people make me wish Joker was never added to Smash so we wouldn't have so many crazy things said online.
Twewy did not rip off persona 5 but it sure die rip off SMT in general.
Aw shucks, my plan has been foiled again! @Kimyonaakuma, I will one day get you cancel on twitter.com!
ONE DAY, @Kimyonaakuma! ONE DAY!
Persona fans would look at high school and call it a rip off of Persona.
@PLATINUM7
You joke, but that's exactly what people did (and still do to an extent) with Fire Emblem Three Houses. Even though both games look, play, and sound nothing alike, people compared the two simply for having schools and the ability to hang out with your party members.
Persona did not invent team bonding, people. 🙄
Im a fan of both, and would like nothing more than playing both on switch, i'm sure they will be totally different
They really don't even look similar. It looks like a three-dimensional evolution of the original TWEWY.
@jobvd
As a huge SMT fan and a huge fan of TWEWY since it came out on DS I fail to see how.
I'm curious in what ways you think TWEWY rips off SMT because I can't think of anything.
Hahaha. Because only Persona can have teenagers in Tokyo with stylish aesthetics. I forgot Atlus invented those
So by that logic both games rip off Jet Set Radio. SMH.
@BulkSlash
It's true though. JSR was the first game (to my knowledge) to have a fully explorable hub world based around the Shibuya district.
I'll laugh my butt off if Sega ever does a JSR/JSR Future remake and we see the same comments. XD
I can see why people are calling it a rip off But I this is going to be WAAAAAY different Maybe they borrowed some stuff form P5 Idk I have never played a world ends with you game so don't BASH ME.
I never get sick of seeing the salt that P5/P5R isn't on Switch. Keep it up!
Meanwhile all the non-weebs just assume every anime is ripping off whoever made the first anime however long ago. Y'all be like water connoisseurs with your ability to differentiate the minute details between Aquafina and Disani.
@NIN10DOXD Our thoughts resonate.
Persona 5 has a great style. You could also say they are copying the art style of jet set radio future. Its just part of the culture of these games and matches up with the vibe of the first game.
This game looks awesome.
How though? Seriously, Persona 5 has a color "theme", primarily red and black, with a little white, and mostly thin linework on the 2D stills. TWEWY2 looks like it uses some unique lighting engine in the 3D segments, and the 2D artstyle has thicker linework.
The original was pretty much Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne as reinterpreted by the Kingdom Hearts dev team.
Small wonder its sequel would look like the same, but with Persona 5. I see no issue here and still love TWEWY to bits and squeed like a little chipmunk when I saw the teaser site.
What?? Haven't people played videogames previous to this gen, or what??
So ridiculous...
Fans never change, but all the recent "BoTW ripoffs" pale in comparison to this idiocy. And forget Persona 5, TWEWY actually boasted the mix of mystical grimness and upbeat Japanese youth culture a good year before Persona 4 first came out. Who rips off whom, by that insane troll logic?
Just birdflip the fandoms and let normal audiences celebrate the continuation of an epic chronicle and lore we just saw announced.
@noutBr you must not be that big a fan if you fail to see
LOL no way... NEO TWEWY has the same artstyle as the first TWEWY which came out years before P5 and also NEO TWEWY has no turn based battle system.
i hate being apart of this fanbase
Yea ok, headline to blow it way out of proportion.
Not a single comment on that trailer video mentions how much it's ripping off P5, only that "Everyone" is talking about it...
@MantaPloc This is how things trend on social media. it's almost always talk about how other people are talking about something, rather than anything of substance itself.
For this reason social media does a very good job of propagating stupid ideas that probably very few people had to begin with.
i haven't seen yet a person stating that this game is a persona 5 rip off neither in reddit, twitter or the youtube trailers comments. Post a source or something where those comments can be found because im starting to think these posts are just stupid without proof of said comments.So...anyone can link me some post, reddit, tweet or whatever where people are stating that is a rip off??
@MantaPloc Indeed
I saw that on Eurogamer. I didnt pay attention but I'm shocked if people really think that, thats dumb...
Articles like this really bring out the snobs.
You open the good stuff to the PS crowd and this is what happens.
Guys guess that means Japan is from Persona now.
Every time I see twewy I laugh. Now that's a fun acronym to say. GASP! Did they rip-off acronyms too?!
What's with anything looking even remotely similar being a clone or rip-off these days? It's kind of how anything that graphically resembles the art direction of BoTW is considered a clone, even if it's a completely different type of game. Things can have similarities, that's not a crime.
The games are NOTHING alike.
@JR150 you know you say that but when I was doing all those loyalty missions in Mass Effect 2 I still felt super ill that BioWare would rip off persona 3 that badly! Must of been EAs influence...
I think people in the above comments have already said why TWEWY isn't a rip-off at all and why the assertion is stupid. No need for me to add further.
@Takkunxx It's all over Nintendo of Americas Twitter post sharing the trailer.
However, I thought it was kind of obvious that most of them were baiting. Can't blame them considering the huge reactions in response to their purposely dumb comparisons
They're all TMS#FE rip-offs anyway.....
persona 5 fans when they learn that shibuya is a real place
So it's a P5 rip-off because it's an RPG that takes place in Shibuya?
Makes as much sense as saying that Hades is a Kid Icarus Uprising rip-off because they're both action games based on Greek mythology partially set in the underworld.
@nessisonett Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks these are fake fans and just people who want the game on switch. Besides Persona 5 is not as good as 3 and 4
@PickledKong64 I don’t think I could ever choose between 3, 4 and 5. I love all three for different things, 3 has my favourite atmosphere and that traditional dungeon crawling style, 4 has a great setting and probably the most heartwarming social links and 5 has the best soundtrack and visual style.
A dude farted in a game once
@Takkunxx totally agree, that's the usual NL stirring for clicks where there's nothing to be seen.
But the real reason I replied to you is...TAKKKUUUUUUN!!! 😄
Fan of FLCL, ain't you? 😄
@jobvd You are not answering a simple question, this leads me to think you are trying to provoke me or something.
The only similarity that I can think of is that both series (most SMT games at least) take place in Tokyo/Shibuya, a place that exists in the real world.
That's not ripping off, it's a real location. I'm curious what elements you think TWEWY so clearly rips off of the SMT series.
@noutBr there are plenty of similarities. I will not let myself be provoked by a troll/fake fan. Real SMT fans KNOW about the similarities. They don't need to ask on the internet.
@clvr Big fan indeed!!! Amazing you guessed it!
Persona 3 and Persona 4 also has ghost-like creatures getting summoned when they shout "PERSONA!!" so that must mean they are also P5 rip-offs!!
The NERVE!! Shame on you, Atlus, for ripping off P5 like that!
Just... wow!
Oh Boi This aint gonna be good..
@jobvd please stop that already. If you only plan to provoke other users, it's better to just not reply at all.
@Takkunxx the original was soooooo good.
Progressive though was such a letdown I never even bothered with Alternative.
To be fair, a lot of people felt that the original game drew more than a little inspiration from the MegaTen franchise. The door swings both ways, though, as people felt some of the structure and concepts in fellow DS game SMT Devil Survivor felt a little bit TWEWY inspired 2 years later. Personally, I just think they were all Gantz fans lol.
Of course people saying this is ripping off P5 are wrong, but the TWEWY/MegaTen comparison debate goes back well over a decade.
Persona 5 really is becoming the Jojo of the gaming community isn't it (in the sense that fans like to claim everything is a reference to Persona 5 like how Jojo fans claim everything is a Jojo reference). Similarly to Jojo fans, I feel bad for the people in the Persona fanbase who aren't like that and feel embarrassed to be a part of a fanbase just because there's people in their fanbase that are annoying and give the fanbase a bad name.
@Kirbo100
Welcome to fanbases in general. As far as games go, Sonic, FNAF, and Undertale are just as difficult to be a part of if not more so.
Fanboys call everything a ripoff. Look at the BotW fans.
Mario Odyssey is a rip-off of Persona 5.
The World Ends With You is the The World Ends With You.
This should have been called The World Does Not Revolve Around Persona 5.
@BlueKnight07 "The World Does Not End With Persona 5"
@Wilforce Mario is WAY older
@nessisonett 3 is my personal favortie from the story alone. I like persona 5 but could never really get into it. Maybe because I dont really play JRPGs on my tv.
@AlexSora89
Let’s not pretend Nintendo crowd are any better since this is same crowd who tried to cancel federation force and pikmin 3ds.
@Kitoro you're not alone on that one. i love the persona series but the fanbase is starting to slowly drive me away from even talking about the games anymroe
@iceicebb its such a shame
