In the fashion of several of the company's announcements this year, Nintendo surprised us all recently with the announcement of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity — a Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild prequel in the Musou mould that's now available on Nintendo Switch.
A collaboration between Nintendo and Koei Tecmo (who made the previous Hyrule Warriors), this new game is set 100 years before Breath of the Wild and shows the destruction wrought by the Great Calamity on the kingdom of Hyrule, detailing the events that led to hero Link being put to sleep for a century.
With many playable characters from Breath of the Wild (including the Four Champions) and environmental puzzles to solve along with Koei's patented hack-and-slash gameplay, it's an energetic dose of Zelda action to finish the year with. Take that, 2020!

Yes am so looking forward to this!
Digital Pre-Orders get the Lucky Ladle.
That's all the incentive I need.
Pre ordered, I wonder if this is why all those Zelda amiibo reappeared on the Nintendo store? Well now I have this, a couple of Zelda amiibo, Mario 3d All Stars, Game and Watch and that Mario Kart all on pre order. 2020 going out in style 😅
Waiting for that ol Amazon listing
Love hyrule warriors. Really happy about this announcement, but it does beg the question, why does nintendo always load so many games into the back half of every year?
While this looks potentially awesome, I'm not ready to pre-order. Very tempting though.
@Chowdaire They probably want to capitalize on the holiday season. Families buying consoles at Christmas, and people of all ages possibly getting/giving gifts, means more people interested in buying new games towards the end of the year.
Given a certain flashback showing the carnage full power Link could bring, this is probably a lore appropriate genre soft lol
@Chowdaire Thats traditionally when most games are sold
Koei Tecmo is really turning these crossover musou titles into solid action RPGs that do more than just the replicate the character rosters for fanservice.
this Hyrule Warriors game in addition to Persona 5 Scramble look like literal love letters to their respective series both on a visual and gameplay level
@TheFrenchiestFry just wish they would hurry and announce scramble for the west
Looking forward to this as finally we get a non port game and something new to look forward to. I wonder if my zelda amiibo card collection will work with this?
Also please please hurry announce yo kai watch 4 for this holiday season aswell
No GameStop???? So what do GameStop member go gang busters so GameStop sells this?
5 different articles!!!! Come on NL they easily didn't need their own articles. Stop click baiting and provide a streamlined service jeez
Why not make it limited available too since idiots won’t question it and will make up insane justifications, the front page of the Switch reddit has this lovely gem “ Didn't even bat an eye that availability ends in March, now imagine trying to explain 'anti consumer' to her“.
@carlos82 True, but year after year we see many games get buried beneath the avalanche of new releases in the fall. Peoples' money is finite and when everyone releases their games at once people are going to only pick up the games they want most. Even nintendo has had a few games land with a thud as a result. Look at Daemon X Machina, im not saying that game was going to set the world on fire, but having it sandwiched between 4 other nintendo published titles and a bunch of third party games on other consoles probably was not the best move for that game. Utilize the rest of that calender for godsake!
I'll need to see more as the previous Warriors games didn't interest me, but I might stick this on a Christmas wishlist or something.
@playstation_king Amen
Graphically this looks a lot better than the original Hyrule Warriors actually.
I'll get that and Luigi for MK home circuit. And I'll see if I stretch to 3d all stars this side of Christmas...
Nintendo is hurting my wallet this fall. I was not expecting that 2 weeks ago!
@playstation_king I think we all are. P5S is literally the single best Persona spinoff I've played. It's even better than either Arena game. Really hope people who only own a Switch don't sleep on it because of its connections to P5
@Chowdaire I see what you're saying but I'd say Nintendo's own major franchises exist in their own little bubble to an extent. Smash, Pokemon and Mario Odyssey all released in similar periods and were hugely successful. To be honest I think Mario 3d All Stars is the one which will be the big seller as even with Zelda attached the Warriors games don't have a broad appeal.
It definitely has a negative effect of many third party games on PS4 and is why many have now moved to that end of January, early Feb window in the last few years, which ironically is where 3d World is
Stop nintendo I don't just have money lying around! i'm going to have to wait for this one just got 3d all stars.
@Snatcher I feel this too haha
@Patendo Nice to know i'm not the only one.
@Snatcher I got lucky as for some reason I get 6 weeks salary this month, so that extra has paid for all these Mario things and this
Hello new computer background!! Looking forward to Zelda's war torn expression greeting me when I log on for work every morning.
@SalvorHardin - I don't think people legitimately aren't questioning it. The limited availability for the Mario collection was a really weird move for sure, but that's no reason not to get it if you want to play it. I sometimes like to just let people wallow in their own stupidity. They'll get smacked awake eventually.
Done.
Cyberpunk 2077 for Home on the 19th. Hyrule Warriors for on the GO on the 20th (Yakuza: like a dragon as a back-up for Home or GO)
November is set. Great when my hardware set-up actually has New and exciting software to make it work.
its not 5 month limited release this time.
@Agramonte Sounds perfect
@Rika_Yoshitake Ikr
Awesome, not that I'm too into dynasty warriors games but gotta pick this one up for the style alone.
I think a shadow of mordor style game would be awesome as well. A mature rated Zelda game would be a really cool thing to see.
£42.85 at https://www.shopto.net/en/swhy03-hyrule-warriors-age-of-calamity-p502336/. Looks good though.
@Patendo I know right! I love NL, but separating their articles like they do is really too much sometimes. All of this could be contained in one article ... but I get it
@Multi so this ShopTo is legit??
@Rika_Yoshitake Knowing Koei Tecmo, it'll be sold as DLC later down the line. Seeing Link save Hyrule with a spoon is tempting, But I want a physical copy to go next to Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition!
Pre-ordered from shopto.net for £42.85. Mario 3D All Stars also pre-ordered from there for same price.
@neogyo Yes. One of my main gaming software suppliers.
@LEGEND_MARIOID thanks that’s a good deal!
I love how non of the "leakers" seemed to have caught wind of this.
I will wait for reviews. It looks lovely, but the last one was a mixed bag of grapes
Removed - unconstructive
@RPGamer the physical box art looks sexy AF though. This is the most excitement I've had for a new game since may/June, when for a split second I thought origami king would have rpg elements.( Before I start an argument, I very much enjoyed the game, just not as much as I wanted to)
@RPGamer I knowww why they gotta make a disincentive for physical buyers!!!
Any word on multiplayer/online functionality? I have not seen anything about that.... that will sway my vote...
@TheFrenchiestFry The Samurai Jack game shares designers and DNA with the best musou games. It's great. They've really refined the formula.
@Patendo @Snatcher me too
@Chowdaire Christmas sales.
Some people may not enjoy hyrule warriors but I did for what the game had to offer, This one might even be better than the original but we will wait and see. I love that is a pre-sequel type game which is cool.
@neogyo yep I've never had a problem with them. You can either pay up front or pay near the release date.
@Multi right on I realized with shipping I’d spend about $55 US since I’m not in the UK it’s not the best deal for me afterall;)
@Chowdaire A little thing called Christmas
I think I'll preorder after the follow up video on the 24th. Just want to see a little bit more of the gameplay to confirm how great an idea this whole game seems to be.
I am going to pre-order this I want to get this and botw 2
@Dirty0814 obviously, but I feel like this strategy sends a bunch of games out to die in a tidal wave of game releases.
I’m waiting for reviews. Looks awesome but still gonna wait
Why, rather than just linking to the Nintendo UK shop and Amazon UK, don't you link for online shops where the game is cheaper?
@RazumikhinPG because they don't pay commission
@chardir that's not necessarily true, some other online shops provide referral links. But I do understand your point.
wow, this may be the first time the Australian store price is less than the States'
@RPGamer @Rika_Yoshitake for only half of the price, shipping not included, I'll send you a real life lucky ladle!
Act quick though, I only have one.
I just used it to transfer soup from one container to another, and spilled not a single drop, how much more luck do you need? I'm also sure that, should you use it for resolving conflicts, it will have a fair chance of striking critical, depending on your personal skill level in ladle combat, obviously. Haven't tested its durability though. Should you break it using it for other purposes than the intended, returns will not be accepted. I won't get rid of your murder weapons and will not be held accountable in any way.
@aaronsullivan So, did you preorder it?
I have a pre-order in on Amazon for the physical, but then yesterday I bought a $99 eShop digital card - 25% back - to pre-order it on the Switch. I was going to get the $70 card but then decided if it gets a $30 season pass bundle for $89.99 that's about $99 after NY tax. I know the first game doesn't have a season pass on Switch but it had a $20 season pass on Wii U, so expecting the same, only $30 b/c every video game company is extremely insanely greedy these days - see $90 Pokemon 1 year after release.
So, 1 way or another, Day 1. My son should be home from college Nov 23rdish so he can play w/ his bro. I figure I have until Nov 10 or so to decide, which coincidentally will be around when my 1 month of Prime runs out. I think we spent $500 on Amazon the past 3 days. 😮😱😭🤑
@rjejr how did you get the 25% back???
@buggysdad It's a long story, but here goes.
Best US deal I found yesterday - with TWO caveats -
IF you have Prime
AND more importantly, this is the tough one
If you have an Amazon Visa card -
you get 25% back on your credit card on Switch eShop digital codes.
Again, it's a limited deal, but if you have Prime and a CC 25% off is hard to beat. I bought the $99 card.

Edit: Sorry, wrong link.

I will eventually. I’m under my yearly pre-Christmas purchasing embargo so I will have to wait until that’s over. Turns out my wife gets annoyed if I purchase the games she knows I would like as gifts.
@rjejr I haven't decided what to do with the physical preorder now that I jumped on that deal you mentioned. Getting $99 for $75(ish) is pretty great. I will have to buy something at Amazon to take advantage, but I don't think I'll have a problem with that.
Since we autopay the Prime card every month, and we shop there all the time, it really is similar to a 5% discount card.
I've got to look at upcoming Nintendo purchases, again. This is the only 100% for sure purchase... never sure if we'll wait until Holidays, either.
We did pick up the Super Mario 3D Anniversary, but I could probably live on the backlog of other games for a couple years at this point. There are some games I really enjoyed and want to get back to, still: Lots of retro stuff (Link's Awakening, The Messenger, Aegis Defenders, Blaster Master Zero 2, SteamWorld Dig 2) and games I've watched my kids play that I would definitely enjoy: Horizon Zero Dawn and Spider-Man.
But some games can convince me to pile up the backlog: This game and Star Wars Squadrons has the family's collective attention (my wife and I used to play X-Wing for PC back in the day). But when I get to that, I want it in VR with HOTAS and the HOTAS is hard to come by at regular pricing right now. (For VR, we have Quests, borrowed from where I work).
My kids are getting far into gaming. Gotta keep an eye on that. They are playing with friends online, which is mostly good, but they are much more focused on it than they have been. My daughter is into Minecraft on a new level partly because of Dream (speed running and also he tries to complete it while other real players try to defeat him).
My son is on Roblox and games with engineering like Stormworks, but also FPS stuff... and everything VR when he can. He finds VR stuff to do every day, and I'm betting he'll be the most fit among us — Oh yeah, and Among Us — Oh yeah! and we gotta open up that fitness ring game.
@aaronsullivan Either we've been at this way too long or your kids are much older than I thought they were.
Our VR has so far been limited to PSVR and Labo VR, which I forgot we had there for a second, but my son has occasionally expressed interest in Hive, but he's aware of the cost. I've been following Oculus Quest on the periphery, I like the $299-$399 prices, but I think he wants the whole enchilada - cameras, controllers, etc - that his friend has. And we never use PSVR, can't be bothered, so I wonder how much actual use it would get, like those Mario Kart Live RC cars or the 3D printer we never bought b/c I know it would rarely is ever get used.
On Amazon, I don't like autopay but it is our main cc, and every few months I transfer over about $100 to our checking account, I like the influx of cash. Not enough to pay for Prime year round though. The 5% looks good, but it's 1%, 2%, 3% w/o too. I probably pay 3 or 4 times a year so less than 1/2 the $119, which just seems like a lot. They need more Prime sales, like PS+ which costs $59.99 but is regularly on sale for $39.99, especially Black Friday. I'd probably go $79.99 for a year of Prime like it started, probably pass on $99, still cheaper monthly for me.
I think my backlog is pretty big but I think I'm letting myself forgot what it was so I don't have to worry about playing them. The Witcher 3 now was my main one. I'm about 4/5 thru Horizon Zero Dawn, maybe I'll finish it before the sequel. I played about an hour of Spiderman, the Peter Parker segments turn me off. My kid finished it, will probably get the sequel at some point. I'm going to try to get my wife to play HW: AOC w/ me, we'll see how it goes. We also do watch a bit of tv and we have a few series turning up - Star Trek Discovery, His Dark Materials, The Expanse - which I do need Amazon Prime for. Waiting to see how we work it w/ my son being home for the holidays, we watch all 3 w/ him.
OK I'm kinda outta sorts, rain and what not, I'll write more, holidays are fun, and the world can use some fun. Remmeber when we had happy jingles in the world - I am stuck on Band-Aid, and Band-Aid's stuck on me; I'm an Oscar Mayer Weiener; Toys R US. I miss jingles. And TV theme songs. My wife says Firefly killed words in TV theme songs. Probably wasn't Firefly, but the timing is right. I used to know every word to "Soap' and that wasn't even sung, just said. Maybe I'll go see if the new One Day at a Time reboot rebooted the theme song. Like I said, out of it.
@rjejr Yeah, memes and TikToks aren't quite as wholesome as a good commercial jingle or corny TV theme! Toy R Us is mostly gone, but I'm still a Toys R Us kid, the theme to Cheers...
I don't know about Firefly killing the theme song, because almost no one saw that show when it aired — oh, maybe that's the reasoning? haha. I did see a troupe sing that theme song in full regalia at Dragon Con one year, long ago. People were singing along.
The Expanse is one show we make time for. I was staying ahead with reading the books, but that show makes it very confusing going back and forth. Great books and the show is very good, too. Reading and watching the interpretation near each other doesn't work too well, though.
Discovery, we'll probably get back to again. We did watch Picard and enjoyed that quite a bit. Both of the shows were a little clumsy trying to fit in with the "prestige" TV of today at times.
His Dark Materials — do you know the books? (I have not read them, just read about the themes, really) Curious about your thoughts on those and that series.
That is 3 streaming services right there, though. They've got you where they want you. Honestly, I'd trade all those for Disney+ just for The Mandalorian. Our family loves that show.
On VR, as long as you are willing to use a Facebook account, Oculus 2 is a great, great deal. Tracks better than the PSVR with the room, player, and the controllers using the cameras within the headset (inside out tracking). The better head strap upgrade seems like a must, though. A $15-$30 cable (PartyLink) will let you use it with a PC, too.
I'm honestly avoiding it because of the Facebook requirement, though. I wish someone would make a standalone VR headset to compete with the Quest. Nothing is close, sadly.
@aaronsullivan I only read social media, not books, but my wife had a job at a company that did the books for the Expanse so that's how we started watching them. She's at a manga company now, working from home since March until January, so there's an endless supply of hentai arriving at my house on a daily basis so she can proof them before going on sale. My dining room is a den of sin so we won't be hosting Thanksgiving this year. 🤣
I'm pretty sure my wife and possibly both sons read His Dark Materials, which is why we're watching that. First season seemed like prologue, looking forward to 2.
I think we're the last house in America to not sign up for Disney+, not even a free trial, so no Mandalorian for us yet.
We watched Picard, I think the 1st half was really good then the rest was ok, but I don't remember.
My wife and I each have Facebook accounts, my kids limit themselves to Reddit and Discord. The college kid is on the wiki team for some school stuff, not sure what. So we could go Oculus. He hasn't mentioned it in awhile though.
More off topic - I decided to play mad scientist and mix and match my kids PCs. All was going well until we discovered the Acer motherboard is 1.35v for RAM, which is stupid for a PC, so I had to buy more as it only had 8GB and Minecraft considers 8GB to be one mods worth. Nobody advertises RAM by voltage.
So, now I'm thinking adding a new SSD, motherboard takes up to 256, to move the OS too and keep the 90% full 1TB HDD for all the Minecraft mods etc. But cloning doesn't really work well, so I'm spending my Sunday watching Yotuube videos for Acronic, Macronium Reflect, Aoimee, etc but I'll probably just have to do a clean install and let the kid manage moving stuff over game by game, though I hear Steam has a way to hello w/ that for the extensive Steam library.
I'm really getting too old and tired for this stuff. Glad my kids are both tech nerds, they can take it from here.
@Chowdaire they probably leave them till the end to drive up holiday sales, especially since Sony and Microsoft are launching new consoles this year.
Shopto does have the same pre order swag as the Nintendo store!
Getting the physical instead in local store.
Mine is shipping out soon. i liked the Demo so the game should be great.
US deals be like...
So, do we think Nintendo is going to let us pre-download the game if we buy it digitally or am I going to have to wait to download 10GB on Friday, b/c as slow as their servers are I won't be playing until Saturday.
This won’t be the first Zelda game I’ve skipped. I’m waiting for BOtW 2. The demo didn’t do it for me and I felt it needs a bit more polish. There was a scene where the fountain was spraying water and it was behaving weird depending on how close or far away I was. I dunno, seems to need just a bit more love. It also made me just want to play the real thing (BOtW). I love the premise and stuff but I felt it’d be cool as a section or 2 in a Zelda game; not an entire Zelda game where I’m hacking and slashing everything. Just a few sections of it would’ve been cool. I can see myself getting burned out on it pretty quick. Someday when it’s not $60 I’ll maybe pick it up.
I got off eBay for £38. Bit of a bargain I’d say
@sandman89 Did you go via Boss_Deals for £37.59. Mine has been dispatched.
@dazzleshell no was actually shopto but I’ve used boss deals before 😊
Where to buy? Any store that sells games. 😒😏
Bruh no special pack for amazon us? B R U H
That's annoying
Thanks for this guide, I couldn't find a copy in Superdrug or B&Q
@EVIL-C Exactly. HW AOC is sold everywhere. Not needing a guide to find a local store anywhere on the planet. lol
