Re: Talking Point: Which Game Stage Have You Replayed More Than Any Other?

Kang81

@Deenroy

I can't think of any stage in Marble Blast Ultra being used as stress relief for me. More like stress inducing. 😆

I loved that game though, I played so much of it. Xbox Live Arcade was home to some of my all time favorite gaming moments. There were so many great games on XBLA.

Splosion Man is a great example for me.

Mega Man X's Armored Armadillo stage. It was my E-Tank farming stage, and because of that I've played it more than any other stage of a game ever.

I also can't stand the stage or its music anymore because I played it ad nauseum.

Other than that, probably Super Mario World's Star Road Tubular stage. Only because it took forever for my two brothers and I to finally beat it. Probably over 100 tries between the 3 of us. Plus 2 controllers, they were thrown into the ground a lot. But we learned how to take them apart and fix them because of it. Thankfully SNES controllers were built strong.

For modern games, do demo's count? If so, it easily goes to the Batman Arkham Asylum demo. I was in love with it, it was so good, as was the game. Still the best in the series.

I remember hiding my online status on Xbox Live from my Gears of War PvP buddies all the time just so I could replay the demo. Probably played that demo 30 times.

Re: Grindstone 'Lost Lair' Update Adds 20 Levels, New Challenges, New Gear

So, I take this as getting an Android port in another year or so. By that time I'll no longer care, almost there now.

I had a blast with it while I still had an iPhone, but its a game I only play to kill time when out and about. Not something I'd sit at home on my iPad or Switch and play.

Oh well, still good news for fans.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch Metroidvania Games

Kang81

I never see it on these best Metroidvania lists, but I think it should be on them.

Ghost 1.0

It was one of the earlier Metroidvania’s available on the Switch, I had a lot of fun with it.

Also, I think Cave Story+ is overrated. I finally bought it due to all its glowing recommendations everywhere. I didn't like it, it felt more like a side scrolling action game and definitely not like a Metroidvania game. Even then, I still found it boring.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Want To See More Apple Arcade Games On Switch?

Kang81

I'd rather not, particularly since they're usually overpriced when releasing on Switch. An iPhone and Switch aren't very different in terms of power, so I don't feel a cost of double or triple is worthy of ported mobile games.

I dont see games being ported from PC or other consoles to Switch getting that price hike.

Re: Video: Indie World Star Aztech Forgotten Gods Fights Its Way To Switch This Fall

Kang81

@rjejr

I legitimately tried Heavy Rain. I needed to be a contortionist or have 3 or 4 extra fingers for the horrible design of their QTE's.

I recall the murder investigation scene on the side of a highway early on. I physically could not press all the buttons they asked me to do in the pattern they wanted simultaneously, and I have nothing wrong with my hands. 🤦‍♂️

Re: Video: Indie World Star Aztech Forgotten Gods Fights Its Way To Switch This Fall

Kang81

@rjejr

Honestly that's about the only thing I remember, I had only played the demo and that was enough QTE's for me. lol

I did do a quick.google search before I posted my reply so i.didnt look like a complete idiot, only a partial one. It was very QTE heavy.

My runners up for that distinction would be anything from David Cage and his team at Quantic Dream.

Re: Review: Maneater - You're Gonna Need A Better Combat System

Kang81

@karatekid1612

Thanks!

Maneater definitely won't be for everyone, but I thought I'd share my opinion on it because I thought about passing on it at first and I'm really glad I didn't.

I have a soft spot for AA games. I'd definitely consider Maneater to be placed in that category. Not everything has to be the next big AAA masterpiece in storytelling, design, or gameplay. I love those too, but I definitely want to see studios and publishers try more risk with AA games.

Don't even get me started on how Microsoft wants to create AAAA games. 🤦‍♂️ That's not going to be good in the long run for anyone.

Re: Review: Maneater - You're Gonna Need A Better Combat System

Kang81

EDITED for grammar

I'm seeing a lot of distaste for Maneater, its not a masterpiece, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it.

I had originally purchased Maneater on the PS4 and it had just been pushed to my ever growing backlog.

I was fortunate enough to procure a PS5 around December, and when a PS5 upgrade was announced and even better, free, I decided to give it a try.

I beat Maneater with a 100% completion earning a Platinum trophy in the course of a weekend, I was having so much fun I couldn't put it down. It's definitely been years since I've last done that.

I dont recall exactly, but I believe my 100% completion time took about 18 hours. I thoroughly explored and took my time with the game though along with spending a good amount of time just enjoying the scenery beneath the waves.

The story and level design is interesting, and (on PS5) the game plays well. The narration was oftentimes genuinely funny, but equally cringey. Sometimes I miss that about games.

Combat isn't a game changer, but it's mostly serviceable. Underwater combat against other marine life is easily the most rewarding, and jumping on land to munch on human flesh is both fun and amusing. Amusing in the pure lunacy of seeing a shark flop around on land like a mudskipper while chowing down on panicked and screaming snack food. It's hard not to have an evil grin on your face when terrorizing land dwellers. 😈

The one part of combat I am not crazy about involves fighting fishing boats. It's the clunkiest part of the game, and it's far too easy to get damaged and it can happen severely quick. I stuck with a quick attack pattern of jumping out to eat a boats occupants, submerge, jump out to tail whip the boat, submerge, jump out and repeat. Progressing further into the game and upgrading your creature of death and destruction helps, but I can't say I was ever excited to have to fight boats.

I am a bit concerned that the upcoming DLC seems to have a larger emphasis on above sea level ship combat, and even looks like helicopters are thrown in to the mix.

Overall, I found the game to be highly enjoyable and a fresh of breath air in the never ending amount of shooters and melee focused action games of the past decade.

I also want to point out that Maneater has a bit of Metroidvania to it in that you need certain upgrades to be able to access new areas or to find hidden areas or shortcuts between areas. The game can get a bit repetitive, but I'd say that's more due to the fact that I played it straight through in one weekend.

I have no idea how this will perform on the Switch since I played it on PS5 with smooth 60fps gameplay and bright colorful and detailed graphics. I'm pretty sure it was 30fps on PS4/XB1, so I imagine it will hopefully hit a stable 30fps on Switch, but with a hit to the graphics.

If it looks interesting to you, I'd say give it a try, wait for a sale if your cautious. It's a fun game, different from the repetition in games today, and I'd like to see more games like this.

I'd give Maneater an 8/10.

It's a fun game that doesn't take itself seriously or require 30+ hours to complete. It reminds me of the good old days of gaming when you played games because they were fun, not trying to tell an emotional story or be all serious.

Re: Review: Before I Forget - A Poignant Portrayal Of Dementia

Kang81

@Precinct1313

Sorry for what your going through. I'm in the same situation with my father. I've set him up in a very nice assisted living facility that specializes in memory care.

Unfortunately for me, and my father, he is far from happy. He is not one to sit around all day. I had to take him from a home with 5 acres in which he played around all day with his tractors, Bobcat, and workshop.

He literally spent nearly all his waking moments doing things he enjoyed. While he has early Alzheimer’s, it's his physical condition that has rapidly declined. Last year at this time he was climbing into his Bobcat and just tearing into things because he could. He was also constantly tinkering in his workshop.

Fast forward to today, and he can't even stand or walk without assistance. I almost wish his Alzheimer’s progressed further so he wouldn't be so depressed about losing his physical abilities.

Re: Review: Before I Forget - A Poignant Portrayal Of Dementia

Kang81

Well, talk about odd timing. I'm definitely going to try this out.

Both my father and stepmother have dementia. Well, actually my stepmother had it, she just passed in the middle of the night yesterday.

She had full on Dementia, she no longer remembered most of the family nor her surroundings. Hers came on very suddenly and progressed rapidly.

My fathers is progressing much slower, and the slower pace is actually much harder to cope with.

I turn 40 this year, but 2020 and so far this year, has been one heck of a life experience. I've come to realize I'd much rather die young than linger on with the myriad of ways one can suffer as we age.

Re: Run-And-Gun Platformer 'Blast Brigade' Will Bring Metroidvania Mayhem To Switch This Year

Kang81

While it does look like a ported mobile game, particularly the giant Mario sized coins to pick up, at least visually it looks nice.

I'm really tired of pixel art games unless they have as much detail as something like Dead Cells. I'm not of fan of low pixel count games, I got enough of those as a kid. I want something that looks like I can actually make out what I'm looking at.

Re: King Of Seas Demo Arrives Today On Nintendo Switch eShop

Kang81

@Ventilator

I get more of a Port Royale feeling from this, only without the town building Sim portion. I do agree visually it's taking a bit of a Sea of Thieves vibe.

As for Skull n Bones, I'd be fine if Ubisoft cancels it. I'd say it's a safe bet that when fans clamored for a full on Pirate game from Ubisoft after the excellent AC: Black Flag, myself included, a PvP pirate ship battle game is NOT what was desired.

If I recall correctly, a lot of people and games outlets voiced that opinion rather loudly when Skull n Bones was revealed.

Besides, it's almost a given that Ubisoft will turn it into a live service game. Its likely a big reason it's been delayed so much.

With all the MTX in Assassin's Creed, online requirements of the latest Ghost Recon as well as MTX, and scrapping all single player from Rainbow Six, live service or MTX ridden games is where Ubisoft want their products to go.

I've no doubt we haven't seen a new Splinger Cell game because Ubisoft is trying to figure out how to make it a live service game.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, I love a lot of Ubisofts games, but their decisions as of late have been bothering me. 🤷‍♂️

Re: Random: Nintendo Has Uploaded Its Switch Online Trailer (Again), And It's Still Getting Disliked

Kang81

@UltimateOtaku91

True, but they are a bit annoying because it's hard for me to ignore. Unless I had the option to disable them, or at least any notification that I earned one, I'd be ok.

Sadly, I think if Nintendo did implement them, they'd give us very few options to deal with them. Nintendo is easily the least settings friendly company out there. While everyone else is adding accessibility features into their games, Nintendo still has bare bones settings options. I was honestly surprised they added system wide custom control options.
