It has been discovered the Spanish-based developer MercurySteam is working on a "brand-new" game for consoles and PC. This information was found within a Digital Bros. financial results PR - with its subsidiary 505 Games acting as the publisher.
Digital Bros S.p.A. announces the contract between its subsidiary 505 Games and MercurySteam Entertainment S.L. for development and the world-wide publishing of a brand-new videogame to be released on both PC and consoles.
MercurySteam is best-known for its work on Metroid: Samus Returns for 3DS in 2017 and helping out Konami with the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series (including Mirror of Fate, which was released on the 3DS in 2013).
In somewhat related news, Konami recently filed some fresh trademarks for Castlevania. What would you like to see from MercurySteam next, even if it is a completely new IP? Leave a comment down below.

It would be mighty nice if we could get a Lords of Shadow triple pack for Switch considering that Nintendo consoles missed out on the other two entries.
Probably will never happen but a clastlevania lords of shadow trilogy for switch would be so welcome
It's probably a new IP, given that if it was either Metroid or Castlevania, Nintendo or Konami would be publishing it themselves, not 505 games.
Oh man, let's get a sequel to Aria and Dawn of Sorrow, "Twilight of Sorrow" or "Canticle of Sorrow", but set it back in the 1300's, even before when Legends takes place. Maybe with a female Cruz ancestor. Plus a double castle like in Harmony but even bigger. I'm psyching myself up just thinking about it. But it definitely won't happen .
@Silly_G @EriXz
why wish for a collection instead of an entirely new game? You, my friends, have contracted the Nintendo flu.
I really liked Samus Returns but did not like Mirror of Fate. So this could go either way.
I'd guess Samus Returns was good because Nintendo has high standards and pushed MercurySteam to meet them. And Sakamoto's involvement as producer probably helped too.
Without Nintendo's involvement I wouldn't expect anything great from MercurySteam but I'd be happy to be proven wrong. And maybe I am wrong - maybe they'll take what they learned on Samus Returns and continue to improve as a studio.
I'd love to see the entire Lords of Shadow series make the Switch! I still regret not picking up Mirror of Fate on the 3DS when that was still available. I really enjoyed the demo.
So does this mean MercurySteam isn't making 2D Metroid?
Considering 505 are publishing, the chances of it being Metroid or Castlevania are... 0%.
@Silly_G That would be lovely. I super enjoyed the aesthetics of the first LoS, enjoyed the 3DS one, and then after enountering game breaking glitches in two consecutive LoS2 runs, I would like the chance to try for a 3rd and final time
Ooo this could be a good one
@Bolt_Strike
Not necessarily.
Mercury Steam worked on Samus Returns and Spacelords (originally titled Raiders of the Broken Planet) simultaneously.
Dang, so much for a 2D Metroid
@Tyranexx Why don't you get it now? Maybe second hand...
I wouldn't mind a unique Castlevania-style game in 2D, or 2.5D would be ok. Never a fan of the 3D games. Or a brand new Metroid game, obviously 2D. It could be a mix of the two. Dare I say a Metvania or a Castleroid?
I'd like them to make another 3D action game in the vein of Lords of Shadow 1. That game had some pacing issues and some jank, but it succeeded at delivering a game that really felt like a sweeping epic. It's definitely one of my favorite games of the PS3 generation.
LoS2 was trash, and MoF was mediocre at best. I also didn't like Samus Returns, I found it exceedingly boring.
Well I'd be interested in what they were making if it wasn't being pushed by 505 Games. They're still on my boycott list after Bloodstained for Switch and the Control upgrade mess.
Man, I was fairly certain they were making a new 2D Metroid. And they might still have, they put out another game the same year as Samus Returns. But it would be weird if they didn't, if only because Samus Returns is easily their most highly regarded game thus far. You'd think they'd want to continue that.
@Avol Whoa, what game breaking glitches? Would be good to know to try to avoid them.
@kkslider5552000 I actually think Lords of Shadow 1 is still their masterpiece. Phenomenal first try with such a venerable series. Amazing art direction and depth.
@RudeAnimat0r You probably just don’t like the format of Metroid 2?
@JAPBOO Unfortunately it's a bit pricier than I'd like right now.
@Antraxx777 unfortunately I have no clue what triggered them. I'm being vague as possible to avoid spoilers for this first glitch. At one point a character was supposed to appear and help me up a ledge. I decided to backtrack instread to do some exploring and when I got back to where the character was, they had despawned and I was locked out of progressing any further. A couple people had experienced this one. Some managed to fix it by restarting the mission, but it didn't work for me unfortunately.
Second glitch was when I used a warp point. When I loaded into the new area, my screen was super dark and I couldn't move or push or any buttons except for the Xbox home button. Nothing I could do but delete.
@Antraxx777
So fun story, the best rated version of Lords of Shadow (PS3) has the same Metacritic score as Samus Returns. How about that.
@HalBailman
Castleroid: Bloodclot Moon
I would buy Lords of Shadow Saga in a heartbeat but I am 90% sure they would not even be on the cart.
I am one of the few people that loved Mirror of Fate and LoS2 as much as the first LoS.
Lords of Shadow games are the worst the Caslevania series has offered. At least these guys were able to create a great Metroid game, with the help of Nintendo no doubt.
Yeah... https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/09/nintendo_made_us_a_better_developer_says_metroid_samus_returns_studio_mercurysteam
so that means Mercury Steam is not developing the rumored and higly antecipated 2D Metroid game that continues the Metroid Fusion history? what a letdown.
I loved Metroid Samus Returns and really enjoyed the first Lords of Shadow (did not have the opportunity to play the other entries)! So I think they are able to release a good game, be it a new IP or not
The first Lords of Shadow was a wonderful game, if a little long, and I was happy with it as a separate Castlevania game/timeline IF the 2D series still continued.
Mirror of Fate was OK by comparison, Good for a mobile title, but no where near the scope of LoS.
Lords of Shadow 2 was a huge backstep. A few good ideas, combined with several bad ones. It felt rushed and rudderless, not sticking the landing in many areas. It's amazing to me that it was the same studio, everything from the gameplay, aesthetic, sound, story and voice acting were worse than the first game. It's not terrible, but I expected much much more after such a great opening.
I really hope they are also making a new Metroid 2D game, appart form something original. I loved Samus Returns!
@Silly_G Hell yeah and they can also push the Metroid also.
Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate was awesome!
Unfortunately Konami doesn't have any or no good timing.
They would have been great during the release of the Castlevania season on Netflix.
@Cia They were the worst? Castlevania 64 would like to have a word.
I was hoping they were working on a new 2D Metroid. I guess they could be still?
@HobbesPrime
Castlevania 64 has got superb soundtrack and atmosphere, unlike the LotR- copying LoS. Lords of Shadow just didn't feel like Castlevania. The N64 Castlevania's are actually my favorite games of the series, because I actually played them through instead of judging them based on the first stage.
@Tyranexx oh I didn't know sorry about that! Miss the old days where we could exchange games
That solves the issue. I will give it you if you were in Costa Rica
@JAPBOO No need to apologize. Thanks for the sentiment! Too, it was never released on the eShop. Otherwise I'd get it digitally.
I am glad the Switch is region-free. Region locking has made some 3DS games harder to get.
@Bolt_Strike Thankfully!
I hope Nintendo takes 2D Metroid back in-house or at least gives it to a developer that understands it.
Metroid developer? They made one remake of an existing game and didn't even do a good job of it.
What I look forward to is MercurySteam staying away from franchises dear to me.
They don't get 2D gameplay at all - both Mirror of Fate and Samus Returns were big disappointments (Metroid less so because by then I knew better what to expect).
I love the first Lords of Shadow game. The sequels not so much.
Samus returns is fantastic, let's hope for something great from these guys.
@Cia I actually liked the first stage they are not my favorite castlevania games, but I did enjoy them and complete them. I havent complete LoS, only the 3DS one. I do think they are ok, but with so many games are not rank on my top, which is Castle 3, castle 4, rondo and Order of ecclesia.
@themightyant Definitely agree with this!
Mirror of Fate could have been a solid "Iga-style" entry in the new LoS timeline, and it felt so shallow. Not to mention the story was told out of sequence for the sole purpose of ending on an obvious plot development.
Lords of Shadow 2 had the most amazing start and a concept that should have been incredible for Vania fans. An actual game where you played as Dracula, in the style of Lords of Shadow 1?? But instead, it was really lacking and a total mess.
That opening cutscene though is still bad-ass! And the promise of a "An actual game where you played as Dracula, in the style of Lords of Shadow"... is still mouth watering... only making the failure all the worse.
I never actually played the 2 LoS DLC or the LoS2 (SPOILERS for a 7 year old game) draculA (backwards) DLC, so wouldn't be wholly against a Switch trilogy.
MercurySteam is adept at making Metroidvania games.
505 Games owns Drawn to Life.
Drawn to Life 1 had maze-like stages.
I’m just thinking out loud...
Samus Returns on 3DS probably my favorite side-scrolling Metroid. Would love to see a similar quality 2D Metroid on Switch (not a port ... already played SR 3-4 times), whether from this developer or another equally as creative and skilled.
Nice, I like Mercurysteam, I think they're quite talented. Excited to see what this is.
