The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has plenty of hidden secrets to discover that'll keep most players going for well over 100 hours, but when you throw the "impossible" treasure chests into the mix, well... That's another story entirely.
For anyone unaware, players have discovered that Breath of the Wild features a number of treasure chests that are simply unobtainable through normal means, and these are often described as 'glitched' or 'impossible' chests. By upgrading your Sheikah Sensor, you can create your very own treasure chest sensor – if you do, you might just find some areas on the map where the sensor goes off, but the treasure chest cannot be seen.
Often, these chests are underground and can only be obtained by making use of glitches, and players have been trying to find ways to reach them for the last four years. Finally, Reddit user vohnandrew has shared a clip showing how they've managed to reach one of the more elusive chests hidden underneath Hateno Village using a combination of glitches and Cryonis:
[Update – This trick was seemingly already discovered by YouTube user, El Duende 05]
A purple rupee?! Hardly seems worth the effort, does it?
We've seen all sorts of crazy Breath of the Wild glitches in the past that can uncover hidden areas, send Hyrule into chaos, or even let you go beyond the map's borders. We wonder if it'll be a similar case when Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 comes around?

All that of a chest? No thanks
What secrets lie deep underground.
The decrepit source of the calamity itself?
No, just a treasure chest with a lone purple rupee.
Wow, I didn’t know Breath of the Wild had impossible chests. That’s weird.
There's around 5 chests that are either unintentionally hard to get or impossible via normal means.
1. Hateno Village, in a pond east of Ton Pu Inn, contains a Purple Rupee.
2. East of Aris Beach, on the east shore, contains an Amber.
3. East of Aris Beach, in the water, contains an Opal.
4.East side of Rassla Lake, contains a Knight's Shield.
5. Upland Zorana, northwest of Toto Lake, contains a Soldier's Bow.
They are not impossible, they are there for the sequel when we go underground!
"By upgrading your Sheikah Sensor, you can create your very own treasure chest sensor – if you do, you might just find some areas on the map where the sensor goes off, but the treasure chest cannot be seen"
Wait, so THIS is what has been driving me nuts in the Korok forest lately?
@CEObrainz
It's worth mentioning that the chests in BotW have dynamic loot.
In that the further you progress in the game, the more valuable the gear you find inside of chests.
So if you check the same chest later in the game, it might hold a knight's shield rather than a soldier's shield, or a royal bow rather than a traveller's bow, etc.
It even applies to chests that you previously checked but left behind due to carrying too many items, it might have a bonus attribute that it didn't before.
I think that's fantastic. It's got nothing to do with what's inside the chest!
@iuli It's not about the destination, it's about the journey!
@Rayn
A journey that involves time dilation and drilling yourself underground by bashing a shield into the ground with your legs whilst drawing a bow.
@JoyBoy Lol, I was going to post that's how you access BotW 2 Underground.
This game never seizes to amaze me and players like this guy even more so.
There was one inside a shrine that was on the very top of the shrine ceiling. I didn't have Revali's wind at the time, but it certainly seemed well out of reach even for that.
Well this is honestly heartbreaking. I am going for 100% of treasure chests but... now I'm not that motivated anymore.
@CEObrainz Is there a source for this information please? Or a YouTube video based on it at least? I'd love to watch it.
Always amazes me when people find all sorts of cool stuff in BotW.
I can't believe people still haven't found the The Wand of Gamelon remaster hidden under the depths of B 'Ess near Usotsuki Village
@RupeeClock
But it's not A purple rupee, it's THE purple rupee.
Reminds me of the time my friend and I found an adult video inside a Kraft Mac & Cheese box hidden in the back of his father's kitchen cupboard
@RupeeClock I'm aware of that, the LevelSensor file in the game's bootup.pack controls such things. It's used to level up everything from all types of weapons to enemies as well the weapons that enemies are holding. If you're interested in how the file works you can read it here: https://zeldamods.org/wiki/LevelSensor.byml
@KillerBOB I too have glitched myself into many a kitchen cupboard, but the most exotic thing I’ve found is an expired lottery ticket.
Damn, really cool to see someone obtaining these OoB chests. It reminds me of the impossible coins from Mario 64. It would be cool of all these chest were opened someday
100 years from now. people will still be finding wild and crazy things to do in this game.
Gotta say those walls of flowing water look amazing!
A lot of effort to get 50 rupees though..
50 rupees for completing what is essentially the zelda version of hurcule's 12 labours for immortality.
The area underneath Hateno is pretty spooky D:
I made a tutorial for these chests a few weeks ago for anybody interested in collecting these:

edit: Ryan just updated the main article with a link
One of these days I am going to play this game again since I didn't explore as much as I could have when I first beat the game. It is just a matter of time.
@Dpullam i thought so too but everytime i go back to it, i can never get back into the game, it just has no replay value.
I am not a fan of using glitches I don't like damaging my games!
@Sam_TSM A lot of things are left unnoticed when a game ships and unless it's some game breaking bug the developers will probably never patch them out. In the case of these chests, they were most likely misplaced during development and because they're such a minor thing, they went unnoticed until fans discovered them in-game
That hot 50 rup after prob 35 hrs of working this out perfectly summarizes BOTW. Ton of BS and meandering about for totally useless stuff. The literal cliff notes of BotW haaha bravo. Here's to doing the same nothingness in game 2 🥂
Well, none of the rewards in BotW are particularly worth getting to begin with, so yeah, I'd say this is definitely not worth the effort.
Unlocking the last and final impossible chest will thusly grant the world BOTW2 news.
Last time I had that much trouble getting to a chest, I was a freshman in highschool.
Wait, what? Sometimes when the Sheikah Sensor tells you that there’s a treasure chest nearby, there just isn’t one?
The time I Spend on watching this video is worth far more than 50 Rupees!!!!!
@SortingHat My guess is, that fans of BotW will be disappointed by BotW2. Especially people new to the franchise...
@SortingHat What? We have not seen the game. You do not know how it woll be. Stop trolling.
@mazzel That is not up to you.
@tntswitchfan68 exactly, that's why I said "my guess". My opinion, no proof, just a guess!
Learn reading, that's up to you!
@mazzel Calm down. Some of you need to chill. I was only saying I think it is OK. I will report for insulting. Wow. Calm down.
@tntswitchfan68 lol please listen to your own words and chill! I was not even replying to your comment.
@mazzel You just did. Me replying to you wasn't me being upset. I did not insult you or anything. Grow up. Take a prozac.
@tntswitchfan68 Lol Dude, of you would be as grown up as you think you are, you would let me have my opinion, tell me that you think differently and move on.
@mazzel I was giving my opinion. You responded like a toddler throwing a tamtrum.
@tntswitchfan68 👍
@Sam_TSM all of 1kb to save for a chest location lol.
Breath of the Wild 2 will be delayed till 2022. Though not a "Switch Pro" exclusive, it will display a higher color fidelity on Nintendo's upcoming revised console. Similar to the differences of how Hyrule Warriors Legends appears between the 3DS & 'New' 3DS, but better.
Thats why ganon woke from his deep sleep.
Link stole his treasure. Evil link!!
