@VoidofLight Princess Mononoke is often seen as a spiritual adaptation of Zelda. Which went full circle with later games and especially Breath of the Wild taking influence from Miyazaki's films and Princess Mononoke in particular.
Some games are also excluded there. Sonic Prime, the Netflix show, is stated to be canon to the games, but it's not there.
And Sonic Pocket Adventure and Advance 1 are also missing.
A friend of mine theorised that Sonic Pocket Adventure takes place between Superstars and Sonic 4, Prime takes place between Advance 2 and Heroes, and Advance 1 takes place between Adventure 2 and Advance 2.
The reason they didn't go with this was that James Bond was at the beginning of the Daniel Craig era, which was extremely dark and edgy, much more than every Bond film before except perhaps the Dalton ones. The Daniel Craig films are borderline R-rated films, especially Casino Royale.
@Paper_Yoshi I mean, I know some films with Ghibli vibes despite being live action. Wong Kar Wai's films like Chungking Express and In the Mood for Love have that bittersweet nostalgic feeling to them that Ghibli's films excel at. Amelie has a similar quirky magical realism feel to Ghibli's films. I think films like Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday would be the kinds of films Greta Gerwig would make. As very personal coming-of-age dramedy films.
The whole "kid befriending a fantasy creature" premise of My Neighbor Totoro can also be applied to E.T..
@Vexx234 I still find it funny how people considered the PSP gigantic for a handheld, with it giving you a massive bulge in your pocket. But handheld devices nowadays make it look tiny by comparison.
Also, we thought that cellphones would get smaller and smaller after the giant brick phones, but phones lately have been growing in size again. But nowhere near the size of brick phones, mercifully enough.
I just hope we get autostereoscopic 3D screens back. Stereoscopic 3D is just really cool to me. Too bad despite Avatar: The Way of Water's massive success at the box office, 3D is still not back in full force.
I prefer the GameCube style. The Wii U style is more inconsistent. Some scenes look stunning with the bloom, but some scenes make the characters look like figurines.
The game was meant to look like the old ToeiScope anime films of the '60s like Horus: Prince of the Sun, Animal Treasure Island, and The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon. The GameCube version captures that really well, but not the newer HD remaster.
Another great example of this (but only in America and Europe) was Metal Gear Solid on the Game Boy Color (actually a spinoff called Metal Gear: Ghost Babel). It was made due to demands to Konami Europe for a Game Boy version of MGS1. So they made an entirely new game with a new story that blends elements from MGS1 and MG2 from the MSX2.
Honestly, Ghost Babel is heavily underrated and itās one of the best Metal Gear spinoff games. Even if it is non-canon.
Nowadays, you can just put the entirety of Death Stranding: Directorās Cut and Resident Evil 4 Remake on the iPhone 15 Pro. Or DOOM Eternal on the Nintendo Switch. It may be a better experience for handheld players, but we no longer have alternate handheld versions of the same game. The last I saw of this were Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition (a chibi-fied demake of the base game of FF15 for mobile and Switch, which is honestly not that good) and Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis (an alternate remake of Final Fantasy VII, that also adapts the Compilation and makes it a gacha game).
@Trikeboy More like they split him into multiple different characters.
You can see fragments of him spread across not just Rey, but also Poe Dameron, Din Djarrin, Cassian Andor, and even Grogu.
Some people say Jyn Erso, but her name is so close to Jan Ors so I see her more as an expy of Jan Ors.
@NintendoPete Apparently, it was indexed, which means it couldn't be put on shelves (but they could sell it behind the counter) and could only be sold to customers 18 years or over.
The PS1 version was allowed to be released, but with an 18 rating.
This is why the game is not on Steam or GOG in Germany.
Hoping this finally gets released in Germany. Still baffling to me how this got banned there while DOOM was allowed back then with a 16 rating (not even an 18 rating). This is much more bloodless and has much less scary imagery than DOOM. Not to mention you use sci-fi weapons instead of realistic guns.
@Mario_Stuff The original pre-N64 artwork for Mario, however, was done by Yoichi Kotabe, one of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata's colleagues. He also did animation on Studio Ghibli's first film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. And it shows if you look at the Japanese cover/manual artwork for the earlier pre-N64 Mario and Zelda games, they have a bit of a Ghibliesque flair to them, especially Zelda.
@AstroTheGamosian Well, Studio Ghibli applies a 35mm film effect and with an '80s art style to still look like Golden Age anime even with digital animation. Even Earwig and the Witch had this 35mm film effect, even if it was 3D CGI. But they did this to make the film look like an Aardman, Laika or Tim Burton claymation film. And they did mention that these were their inspirations on how to translate the Ghibli style to 3D.
Ghibli seems to actually like the look of 35mm retro anime, unlike other studios who prefer to be as digital as possible. To the point of applying extreme DNR on older anime.
@Not_Soos Nintendo has limited rights to the film, if any. And Miyamoto actually liked the film despite having little involvement with it. If anyone is really ashamed of it, it would be Disney. Disney has the domestic (US/Canada) rights and they only gave it a poor-quality DVD release. No 4K remastered Blu-ray release, no digital release, and no Disney+ release.
@RetroGames It's available in 3D on Vudu. But only in the US.
Some Paramount films like Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Bumblebee also only received 3D releases in the UK through Sky Media and not physically.
In contrast, some Disney movies only had home video 3D releases in a Russian VR digital movie distribution platform called OKKO. Even weirder is that these came out from Disney AFTER Russia decided to invade Ukraine.
But films like Turning Red and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which were pulled from Russian release calendars due to the war sanctions, are not available there. And Encanto is also not available despite having a theatrical run in Russia, because the Russian home video release was scrapped due to the war.
I'm really mad we can't see Turning Red or Encanto in 3D because of the war.
@Spider-Kev I know Garret Gilchrist did such a remaster with his Morton Jankel Cut fanedit. Combining workprint footage with DVD or VHS footage. Hope they do get the original deleted scenes negatives from Disney or something.
@AstroTheGamosian The OVA is in licensing hell between Shochiku and Nintendo. And it has never been released on home video except for a very rare rental-only VHS back in 1986. The film and its soundtrack was considered lost media for a long time until a VHS copy was found and ripped in 2007. And thankfully, a 16mm print was recently restored in 4K by fans. The VHS tapes are super expensive, as they are some of the rarest VHS tapes in Japan.
There are tons of rare Japanese VHS tapes that have been considered lost for the longest time. Some other ones include an Ace Combat 3: electrosphere promotional videotape with extra lore, the slasher film Cards of Death (an American film but only released in Japan due to extreme gore and sexual content), and the '60s Japanese horror film Cruel Ghost Legend.
The film is also getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release in Australia. And it even has the extended workprint as a bonus. Unfortunately, the workprint will only be VHS-quality 480i or 480p, but the theatrical cut will be 4K HDR. Speaking of video game movies getting 4K UHD releases, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is getting one in the US.
I am hoping for a remake of Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Saga. Yes, the source code is lost. But they're doing straight-up remakes, not ports of the original Saturn versions. The only way those games can get rereleases now is either to fully remake them or emulate them. And SEGA Saturn emulation is still spotty to this day.
Also, I hope they would also remake the canon Front Mission games that didn't get English localisations. Those being Front Mission 5, Front Mission Alternative, Front Mission 2089: Border of Madness, and Front Mission: Online.
I would also add Champ from POSTAL 2 here. Especially in the Paradise Lost expansion pack/sequel, where he turns back to normal after being turned into a giant demon dog from radiation and an exposed opening to Hell. He shrinks back to normal size and becomes the Dude's companion once again, but he still has tons of HP and can launch magic fireballs every once in a while.
@mlt But Nintendo wants their films to be US-Japan coproductions as much as possible. So, if we want Ghibli, then we should have Disney-Lucasfilm coproducing as well, as Miyazaki is close friends with Kathleen Kennedy. And I have faith that Lucasfilm would work really well with Studio Ghibli, especially if it can be sort-of a spiritual successor to Lucasfilm's Willow while being very much a Ghibli film.
I don't care what people say, I love Disney-era Lucasfilm. The only things I didn't like were the Star Wars Battlefront games from EA-DICE (and mostly because of the microtransactions fiasco) and The Rise of Skywalker. I loved Rogue One and The Last Jedi. I also loved the Disney+ shows, and the Willow series is criminally underrated.
@Sisilly_G I disagree. If Universal has the rights, then they should give it to DreamWorks, and make it a serious 2D animated film in the vein of The Prince of Egypt.
My dream Zelda movie (if it were DreamWorks) would have the same levels of action that the How to Train Your Dragon films, the Kung Fu Panda films, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish; with the 2D animation style of The Prince of Egypt.
But I would really love it if Studio Ghibli made this instead. They could even make it a collab with DreamWorks.
Ghibli already previously collabed with the French to make The Red Turtle. And Ponyo was coproduced by Disney/Pixar's John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Cars) and Amblin/Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy (Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny).
Kathleen Kennedy also coproduced Arrietty and From Up on Poppy Hill.
But if Nintendo really wants both Studio Ghibli AND the involvement of a major American studio, it would most likely be coproduced with Lucasfilm and not DreamWorks.
I won't say never, but it would either be a DreamWorks film, or a Studio Ghibli x Lucasfilm collab. Those are my two hopes.
@ottoecamn The first, last and only time this ever happened was in Sonic CD. But I'll let it slide since Sonic CD is the only game they're talking about here.
If anything, she is technically made more powerful than Sonic in terms of gameplay in some games, being one of the easier characters in the Advance games and Heroes.
Also, I really love the use of the USA soundtrack.
@Tempestryke DreamWorks does do 2D animation for some of their TV shows. And the Kung Fu Panda films do have some hand-drawn 2D animation. But I'm not sure if they would fully bring it back for their feature films.

@AstroTheGamosian She was also Sachiko in Lucasfilmās English dub of Studio Ghibliās From Up on Poppy Hill.
The original Japanese voice was Rumi Hiiragi, who voiced Chihiro in Spirited Away a decade prior.

If anyone is really ashamed of it, it would be Disney. Disney has the domestic (US/Canada) rights and they only gave it a poor-quality DVD release. No 4K remastered Blu-ray release, no digital release, and no Disney+ release.
But French company PathƩ, who holds the international rights, seems to actually like this film.
Disney did do the 4K restoration, but it was done as requested by PathƩ, and Disney did it as they hold the original negatives.
PathƩ, for all intents and purposes, is the one responsible for the 4K restoration and rereleases, Nintendo has little to no involvement.
Re: Super Mario Bros. Live-Action Movie Getting 4K Anniversary Screening (Japan)
@Mario_Stuff Shigeru Miyamoto actually prefers this film over the ā80s anime movie.
And Shigesato Itoi also really enjoyed this film.
Re: Super Mario Bros. Live-Action Movie Getting 4K Anniversary Screening (Japan)
@Mabelissimo Disney prefers to pretend this film never existed.
They never rereleased the film on Blu-ray or on digital. You can't stream it on Disney+.
PathƩ owns the rights outside the US and Canada, and they are not as ashamed of the film as Disney, which is why we even got the Blu-ray releases and some theatrical rereleases.
Weirdly, the 4K restoration was done by Disney for PathƩ and sub-licencors like Second Sight, Umbrella Entertainment, and TC Entertainment. This is why the film opens with both the PathƩ logo and the Hollywood Pictures (a former subsidiary of Disney) on the Blu-ray, even if past international releases didn't have the Hollywood Pictures logo.
