Got it for $15 on amazon prime with a trade in, and will hopefully enjoy it at the gaming get-togethers I do every other week. Will be fun with drinks I imagine, but so would plenty of other bad games.

Re: Editorial: Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario 64 Were True Game Changers

HueyLewisFan

Interesting to think if in 10 or 20 years, what industry-changing games will have editorials written about them? Dark Souls? Minecraft? Maybe the new Zelda even?

I imagine it must've been easy to point at Super Mario 64 and say "this will change things", just because of how impressive that was to see at the time. Unless we get a VR kind of game like that, I doubt it'll ever be that easy again. Good read!

Re: Talking Point: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS Set a Standard That'll Be Tough to Follow

@Chaoz Brawl is actually the best selling smash game of all time, unless you combine the sales of the Wii U and 3DS Smash 4 versions. Brawl comes in at about 13 million sold, while Smash 4 3DS is at 7.3 million, and Wii U at 4 million. I don't believe these include digital sales, so i'll give smash 4 the benefit of the doubt and say both are noticeably higher. Still, Brawl maintains its position at the top so it must have done something right!

Honestly, Brawl's issue was IN it's multiplayer, and not it's single-player. Tripping and other anti-competitive measures along with the most unbalanced roster in Smash history made problems for it. The single player stuff in it was really good, actually. Co-op subspace was a lot of fun, especially with friends who aren't at your skill level but still want to play smash with you. You could argue that the single player content took away from the multiplayer and caused this, but tripping wasn't an accident - it was an intentional move by sakurai, for whatever reason. Additionally, the unbalanced cast (metaknight being able to dominate so much of the cast to such a ridiculous extent, among others) was a problem Smash 4 had at launch, as well. Diddy kong was a beast and no other characters were really in the same league, until patches and updates fixed things. Brawl could have had this too, if it had been built with better online infrastructure.

Melee had a strong single player component as well - an excellent event mode, great adventure mode and an enjoyable, if somewhat vanilla classic mode. Break the Target was also good for getting your movements down in what would become the most demanding smash game in regards to movement. Smash 4 lacks most of this - a very weak and bland event mode, no adventure mode, no break the targets/race to the finish/touch the platform side games, no single player story shenanigan, nothing like a boss rush mode. It has Master/Crazy Orders, which while great don't make up for the boring side games and frustrating single player mode (which seems like it was created just too show off 8 player smash).

I won't disagree with you that smash 4 has what seems to be the most balanced roster in any smash game to date, but I do feel the weak single player side of Smash 4 is.. well, weak. Gameplay, balance and character diversity, as you said, are just as important in single player as they are in multiplayer, and I think a strong single player component can only help smash 4 show off just how well it did in those regards.

Character suggestions are pretty subjective, but I think there are other ways the game could expand that might be worthwhile.

  • More modes. Stuff like classic adventure mode, a single player/coop story mode, a boss rush mode, break the target stuff, etc. would have been a welcome addition to the relatively weak single player content in Smash. After the novelty of 8 player battles wore off, the single player mode in Smash 4 was a pain to progress through in higher difficulties. Coupled with that awful angry bird minigame, a far less memorable/less creative event mode and the boring smash tour mode, it was pretty lackluster imo.
  • Stages. Stages had some issues that were made a bit better with the DLC additions, but still not perfect. A lot of the really cool new stages have super annoying hazards like ridley or yellow devil that are basically masterball pokemon you can't turn off. I play with items off usually (def not always though) but I like to go to a lot of crazy stages, but I usually stay away from the ones with stage hazards like that - an option to turn them off would be appreciated.
  • Trophies and collectibles. I love me some collectin' and Smash 4 did great with that achievement system. This is more subjective, but I thought the trophies were kind of weak this time around and didn't take that many risks. I remember seeing the famicom detective trophy in melee and thinking it was really cool that this nintendo museum mode made it into this game. Smash 4's seems to be more of a toybox than a museum, showcasing things that are kind of overrepresented with characters. I'm probably missing all the cool ones, but this stuck out
  • Lastly, non-playable character represenation. Not a lot of stages or songs for characters that aren't playable. No layton or elite beat agent stages? No Ace attorney music?? Isaac and the custom robo assists gone?! Would have been great to see the smash team pay respect to some series that didn't really have a chance to get in the game in any other way

Sorry for the massive wall of text, kind of just typed away. Smash is still fantastic!

Definitely not a button masher and has more in common with a game like Starfox Adventures than Super Mario 64, it has some very bad camera issues in buildings and tight encounters, and the voice acting is hilariously awkward. Enjoying it overall.

Re: Deep Silver And Comcept Confirm Launch Date For Mighty No. 9

HueyLewisFan

Not to start off on a negative note, but i'll be waiting for a good amount of reviews from several different sources before I decide if I'll be buying this. Lot of nonsense during the Kickstarter, and the game ended up looking surprisingly hideous (which is a shame considering how nice the concept art they put on their Kickstarter looked).

Re: Talking Point: E3 Highlighted Nintendo's Development Shift Towards NX, and Away from Wii U

HueyLewisFan

Depressing to think about things that have just recently been resolved for the Wii U will likely pop up again with the NX. Things like having a terrible launch line up (Wii U wasn't worth purchasing until 3D World/Tropical Freeze for the most part, arguably earlier if you were interested in the fantastic W101 or Pikmin 3), an even worse selection of virtual console titles with not only huge amounts of major titles missing, but entire console generations, coupled with an inevitable push for early 3rd party support that will likely end in failure like it always has makes me not too eager to see what new things Nintendo has.

Despite owning every Nintendo console since the N64, the thought of waiting a year after the console releases to get anything other than paltry launch titles (please don't make NSMBNX) and maybe an HD remix or something is not enticing.

Re: Iwata Vows To Listen To E3 2015 Digital Event Feedback And "Work To Better Meet Your Expectations"

HueyLewisFan

It was definitely underwhelming, and had a lot of false positives. I jumped out of my chair 3 times at least, thinking an announcement was one thing only to see it turn into some stupid spinoff. HD Animal Crossing into a mario party spinoff, Metroid Prime into what looks like shovelware to be honest, and the Zelda coop game that I thought was a Link Between Worlds x Mario Maker type of thing (Zelda Maker, if you will. Fat chance of that happening, but it was a personal hope for me and the lead in with Mario morphing into Link mislead me )

Think about how uneventful this direct would have been without Starfox gameplay. It'd be a massive disappointment for an E3 stream. Hope they figure out that people don't get excited for mediocre games with popular IP's plastered onto them.

Re: Natsume Suggests That Nintendo's Moving Away From SNES on Wii U Virtual Console

HueyLewisFan

Boggles my mind that the Wii U SNES library is so weak compared to the Wii one. How did stuff like Super Mario RPG and ActRaiser get passed by, but NES junk like Golf show up? I've still yet to play my SMRPG on the Wii that I got from Club Nintendo because I was dumb and didn't realize it was Wii only, and I don't have a controller I can use for it.

It's depressing to think that Nintendo's virtual library will just get smaller and smaller as they continue to release consoles, considering they're unlikely to ever replicate the Wii's success anytime soon. To think that the virtual console is Nintendo's answer to emulation!

Re: Two Tribes’ Toki Tori Remake is Coming to the 3DS eShop

The game has always looked pretty cool, but a lot of people seem to have been burned by the Wii U parity issues with the PC version. Seems pretty hard to believe that the Wii U wouldn't be able to do a level editor (seems like the perfect console next to a PC to include such a thing, actually) but I'll still keep an eye on this.
