2020 may have been a bumper year for video game sales, but it's impacted other businesses in a very negative way. Cinemas and restaurants have been forced to close to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and while video game sales have been buoyant thanks digital and online purchases, physical retail stores with no means of selling remotely have seen their footfall reduced to a trickle; these bricks-and-mortar shops have really felt the pinch of local lockdowns and other restrictions on face-to-face trade.
You might think this is the worst possible time to open such a store, but that hasn't stopped Richard Tewkesbury. You might recall him from a feature we did not so long ago; via his Game Boy Shack online store, he's been selling games and modded systems for years, and his stall has been a regular face at live events throughout the UK – until 2020, of course.
With his income from events reduced to zero, Richard has taken it as an opportunity to fulfil a lifelong dream instead – to have his own physical retail store in his hometown of Leicester in the United Kingdom (which just so happens to be the closest city to Nintendo Life's Loughborough HQ, fact fans).
If you've been following the coronavirus pandemic in the UK then you might be aware that Leicester was one of the first UK cities to be placed in lockdown earlier this year, and currently sits in "tier 3" – which is basically the highest of the three tiers laid out by the UK government. While this still allows for non-essential shops to remain open, the situation in the country – and indeed the entire world – still balances on a knife-edge and the UK has only just emerged from a 'circuit breaker' lockdown which could easily be repeated again in the near future. Nonetheless, Richard has opened his shop as planned, and has found that the reception has been an incredibly positive one.
Located close to the city's main shopping complex, Super Game Shack (for that is its name) is described by its owner as something of a geek's paradise; inside, you'll find retro games and systems, Nintendo plushes, modded Game Boy consoles, video game-related merchandise and even Japanese sweets and drinks. Richard has stated that he wants to have a small workspace in the store so he can continue to create his trademark modded Game Boy consoles, and that in the fullness of time, retro fans will be able to visit to trade in old (and new) games for either cash or store credit, which will enable him to maintain a healthy turnover of pre-owned stock.
If you're in the UK and based in Leicestershire (restrictions mean travelling between counties isn't permitted) then be sure to drop by Super Game Shack and say hello to Rich (you can also follow the store via its Instagram and Facebook pages). He's hopeful that the shop will be successful enough to become a truly permanent fixture in the city – and from what we've seen so far, it fully deserves to be.
Super Game Shack can be found at Unit 4, Silver Arcade, Leicester.

looks awsome and wish them all the best but even without the pandemic I think it would struggle
Sounds like a great retro game store. I really miss my local one but it was across the road from a CEX so just couldn’t survive.
Here in Indonesia, All game shop still open their business but under circumstances by limiting 3 customers and when 1 customer is purchasing video games, the other customers must wait outside until the current customer finished to prevent physical contact.
Purchasing video games by delivery is the only way to get the things and the business still goes on.
If this guy wants to put himself at risk during a pandemic, and his customers are inclined to do the same, they deserve each other.
Wish there was a shop like this in Sheffield , looks awesome
So, the answer to the question posed in the headline is... because he wanted to? There's no mention of what he's doing to keep himself and others safe, it appears to be set up to encourage people to linger and touch things. This is insane and I can't believe Nintendolife is encouraging people to go. I don't want to see anyone losse a business, but this is rediculous. This is not only asking to go under, an irresponsible business move and selfish, it is guided by a wonky moral compass. Why not do all of this online, at least until everyone gets a chance to be vaccinated... and even then, until the numbers are under control? I just don't understand.
It’ll be interesting to see if this guy has some connections on the NL staff........
That's some nice merchandise he's got there.
Though with some looking like it's out in the open, is it just the US where they lock up most of the semi-valuable goods because there's very good odds of getting that one person in the store who ruins it for everyone else?
@Tsusasi Probably whatever the laws are. People being able to touch things isn't really that different than being able to touch things at "essential stores" like the grocery stores or the Target/Walmart department stores. The stores post what their legal obligations are, and the rest is the consumer for choosing to go to the store.
"when your ready place the badges you want in a tray"
lmao
Don't personally enjoy these shops myself, they always have really chatty staff and...weird smells. Wasn't particularly sad when my local shop was wiped out by the nearby GAME/CEX, but maybe he'll manage.
Depends on the tiers these days 🤷♂️
@Kimyonaakuma I politely disagree, my local independent was absolutely amazing, and I was gutted when it closed. It was the only place where I could get import games, consoles, associated merch and a reasonable discount if I haggled hard enough. I still remember skipping home after picking up my inport copy of Final Fight One on GBA, good times.
@Iggy-Koopa Your local shop could have been great, I've only been to a few indie game stores myself.
I appreciated the selection and occasional import...but they always have a mix of weird, creepy and chatty staff. But maybe my city is cursed, who knows?
Best of luck to him, takes guts to do it during this pandemic
The old game shop during a pandemic conundrum, eh?
Doubtless there will be more pandemics in our future, and hopefully society has more instincts about a range of situations so that they aren’t a prolonged affair.
@Zebetite If this guy wants to put himself at risk during a pandemic, and his customers are inclined to do the same, they deserve each other.
Just be glad that you are safely tucked away in your house all the time. It's dangerous outside. In fact, I would suggest you wear a mask in your house just in case air from outside gets into your house.
@nessisonett don't say Americans. There are plenty of us who understand this is serious. We just have to deal with a lot of ignorant lowlifes. There are antimask idiots in France, the UK and other places around the world. I've seen the marches. And I can't get my head around it. How anyone can be so selfish and ignorant. I have many friends in the front lines fighting this right now. One's working in a field hospital because hospitals have run out of space. I have friends who have been seriously ill for months with no sign of things getting better. We had family quarantined over Thanksgiving. I recently just lost a friend to Covid. He passed alone in his apartment. Someone else I know has lost 5 family members. I wish I could send these ignorant trash to a modern leper colony. Just leave them there.
@JedRock I mean, seriously. Nothing you said is remotely accurate or true. You're freakin trash.
@Tsusasi It sounds like people as hostile as yourself should be the ones popping off.
better than Gamestop
My mother's workplacr and next door neighbours had Covid. I spent time around there and so did she, a lot. No protection. We have both been tested negative and everyone, including the 90 year olds she works for have had any serious problems. They simply just isolated and were fine. I'm sure there are many cases completely different from these, but it seems random if anything and the numbers are most certainly fudged.
Always enjoyable to see all these hot takes coming in from every angle. Everyone's an expert, and they base their takes on either anecdotal experiences or data that was imperfect (given there was no prior solid knowledge of this disease), skewed, and politicized from day one. Now we've got an impenetrable mess of policy and public opinion. I couldn't say if this thing was designed to dismantle our humanity but it certainly makes for a perfect mold for such a social weapon.
@Jayofmaya nah. Just the ignorant and selfish with their heads in the sand or up their ass, thinking they know every damn thing when they know nothing. Have a good one.
Bottom line is if he can build and create an online following and sell online but buy games from trade wholesale accounts. You get a cheaper buying rate if you have a bricks and mortar. Thus meaning you can then sell and compete online.
@Tsusasi
There's no way anyone will take your comments seriously or even respect your opinions if you resort to name-calling. Show some respect and maybe people would hear you out.
@JedRock enough with the conspiracies please. People are suffering enough and with people like you just make it worse for everyone else. Just wear a mask, stay home and limit contact until this blows over. Is it really that hard for you lot to do just that???
@JedRock back off Shapiro drone. You’re being needlessly rude, arrogant and caustic. It’s no wonder things are getting worse because of sorts like you blubbering about. Grow up and take the safety measures seriously or things will never improve...
@Tsusasi shame all the shops and supermarkets were closed around you.
When I lost my wife, Tesco put an announcement out and she came found me at customer services - she had mooched off to look at the clothes apparently.
On topic I wish this guy all the best, in a time when local game and comic shops have been shutting its great to see some new ones springing up.
Some people are bull headed and stubborn, sometimes that can work out but unfortunately that isn't always the case.
@Tsusasi Your posts are in direct violation of our community rules. This is the last warning you'll get before a ban is issued.
It's perfectly possible to get your point across without hurling insults at other readers.
@Zebetite People need to live! Take precautions and go on with life! I live in California and these laws are ridiculous and makes it seem like we can’t govern ourselves. It’s also killing businesses. A lot of these politicians are using this virus to turn into some kind of wannabe dictator. I knew California was headed for trouble when the governor said that he’ll turn off the utilities to any non essential business, open during the pandemic. And he’s done it. And months later, hear we are with more lockdowns and restrictions. Trying to cancel holidays, while he gets to eat a fancy restaurants, at a table with more than five people. Congrats to this gentleman for realizing a dream in these incredibly uncertain times. I hope it’s a BOOMING success.
@Damo At the same time, that’s been several comment sections in which there are people actively spreading Covid misinformation at a time when it really isn’t helpful. I agree that they should be a bit more civil as it doesn’t help anyone but it’s important to crack down on the comments trying to downplay the pandemic.
@TheRealMr_Carpainter My thoughts, exactly. I take the legitimacy of their arguments as a joke the minute they have to resort to insults. Basically, they don't have anything substantial to defend their point, so they feel the need to insult the other party.😊
So is the answer: Because rent is crazy low right now?
@Damo maybe you should read JedRock comments as well. He’s being incredibly rude and despicable with his insults and baseless accusations.
My state completely curbstomped everything that isn't food. Anyone trying to tie in a food truck now is hit massively with fines.
Even before the current restrictions of what is and isn't allowed to be open in certain places I always find stores like this struggle these days and end up being more like videogames museums with all the really expensive stuff locked in glass cabinets that no one will ever buy in the local area. One that used to be near me a few years back was dead most of the time and everytime I would go in there the one guy that worked there was sitting playing games all day with this one person that also seemed to just stand there all day watching him. It quickly closed when a CEX opened up and was cheaper on pretty much everything.
@Crono1973
Seriously, people are still crammed into planes and Walmart and supermarkets but don't allow 4 people at the same time inside a game store. Amazon can stay open, no problem. Does anyone know how many people are in those warehouses? Use the same bathroom inside of them? I mean Jesus Christ..
I wish him health, happiness and success.
@Tsusasi @Jayofmaya You know, Tsusasi, I am sorry about the loss of your friend.
I have to tell you that you've said quite enough in this thread, however. As Jayofmaya notes, your hostility and invective aren't helping the situation. The rage consuming your country has evidently infected you, and I hope that this will serve as a wake-up call. As it is, I've had to report your comments as abusive. Please don't reply to this message. I hope to read more balanced comments from you in the future.
EDIT: Damo got there first. Well done.
@superderper Reported and Ignored.
I know that people are going to summon hostility toward anything and anyone under the sun, but truly... attacking independent game stores in general, to the favour of large chains? That's a new one for me. I am so lucky to live in a place with a healthy independent market, it seems.
@superderper "you're" and I didn't realize that I or others couldn't have opinions about US related topics (political or not) on what is otherwise a foreign site. Guess I can't talk about Japanese video games, right? Because this IS a UK site, after all... But nice attempt at the attack 🤗🤗🤗🤗
It takes a certain amount of arrogance, selfishness and outright stupidity to open a physical store during a pandemic. There’s absolutely nothing he’s doing that couldn’t be done much more safely online.
It’s this kind of attitude as to why we are under these constant lockdowns and strict conditions.
Taiwan is the best example on how to run a country during this Chinese pandemic.
It seems like Gamestop killed off most of the independent video game stores back in the late 00's. Nice to see them making a comeback.
I used to love going to stores like this one. Unfortunately, there hasn't been one in my area in a long time. I wouldn't go right now anyway. I work with high risk clients, so it would be irresponsible to unnecessarily expose myself to covid. I'm just glad online shops like DK Oldies exist.
Because youre more likely to get a video game than the disease.
To pay the bills?
What kind of question is that?
@Rodan2000 That's right. Keep your store closed while you are forced to pay bills each month. Would you like to pay his bills so he doesn't have to worry about opening his store?
I'm very curious to see if this dude's store will be successful, if so there might be a way to open places like it in other areas
@JayJ I saw the same with independent bookstores making a resurgence after Borders closed in the US and people got sick of Amazon. Community is a big thing, though not to say some GameStop stores were without it because I knew a couple branches where they knew their customers’ names and interests. Those branches got screwed by corporate because they were seen as non-essential even if the numbers back in 2008 showed they were big earners in the region (Los Angeles). But, corporate decisions don’t make sense sometimes when the suits are disconnected from their workers and worsened by middlemen audits who do analyses and don’t even understand what they’re looking for or looking at when making recommendations to corporate.
Follow your Dream 💯
Success is not a Destination; Success is a Journey 💯
You could have the best idea in the entire Universe, but will always be able to find someone to tell you why it's a bad idea.
@outsider83 I know your type, you won't realize the severity of the pandemic until someone close to you passes because of it, and maybe not even then. If you want to risk death or disfigurement, you do you.
I was gonna say inb4 the doom n gloomy Branch Covidians needlessly frown on people who want to live their lives freely and not in a constant state of fear, but - alas - it is far too late for that. C'est le vie
If I lived there, I would go to his shop as much as I could afford to. We need to support small businesses now more than ever! But, even from afar, he's got my support 💕
@Andy_Witmyer People like you are precisely why many folks live in fear. As the last year has shown, all it takes is one mask-defying idiot to infect dozens or hundreds of people. Heck, that term you've misappropriated, branch covidians, is traditionally used to refer to religious people spreading the disease - because in a pandemic it's totally worth cramming people into pews and seats at the risk of their health, thinking that faith will somehow protect them. Considering the number of parishioners that have died, it clearly hasn't.
Call it "living in fear" if you want, but I'm going to protect myself from people like you, thanks.
@nessisonett Can we not make this about "the idiocy of Americans" for once, please? It's kind of getting old. I've lived in five countries and I can personally testify that idiocy is not by any means an exclusively American trait.
@JasmineDragon Every single person in this comment section downplaying the pandemic has United States in their bio. That’s not a coincidence.
@Zebetite The virus already seems to be closing in. I’ve had six relatives get it, three currently dealing with it, one passed away. Their not my closest of family, but it’s still family. What I’m trying to say is, the government CLEARLY isn’t trying to help. What are people suppose to do? Out here in Cali, a lot of shops are closed down. Or, they stay open for five hours a day, close on certain days. It makes handling day to day business a pain. I drove out of my way go to a business, recently, only to see that it closed down. This has happened to me multiple times. And these places usually aren’t part of some huge corporation. How are people suppose to survive? There’s also the issues with people who’ll have to pay rent owed. If the government won’t cut a check, so people can stay home...🤷🏾♂️ People are going to get desperate.
@JedRock I’ve definitely been thinking about it.
@Zebetite eyy sorry we aren't so neatly cosmopolitan as you are guy, as regards the 'slurring' of everyone who disagrees with you into an inhospitable category. That does seem to be a pathological symptom of being shuttered away though - a vague sense of irateness against society and an air of disagreeable pretentiousness about the exotic situation.
Wouldn't it be a beautiful thing to live together as one species under the open air? I personally would avoid the delusion of thinking the problem is that of the "us" versus an evil and hypothetical "them." You might be in the spotless "us" category for a long time before realizing that everyone wants the same thing, and no one is going to change their views without a mutual olive branch towards the larger human community.
@nessisonett
You're still trying to distract people from a mutual problem (the pandemic) by attempting to make xenophobic assertions about who categorizes into what group. It's totally irrelevant. I'm not sure if you are aware but the news of the virus has spread across the whole earth, and you hardly have the tones of a saviour just for bringing attention to the obvious. The issue is not whether common citizens are tone deaf, but rather the obnoxious and destructive response of many governments. Harping upon one disaster inevitably leads to a one-sided and extreme response, to the detriment of all other conditions. Not least among those the increasing depths of poverty and class level disparity, due to shops closing and employment being destroyed in entire sectors. These issues are not trivial whatsoever and seeking to isolate the pain in one continent or the other should be beneath us all.
@Damo disappointed to read this and see it’s not in response to the covid missinformation.
@Andy_Witmyer ah another person who doesn’t take the pandemic seriously. What a moron.
@Zebetite anymore at risk than going to the grocery store or any place for that matter?
@Andy_Witmyer right on. It’s funny all the people that claim to be accepting of others are the first to call you names for “wanting to enjoy your life”. I had Covid and survived. If you’re at risk by all means take your precautions, but no need to shut down the world and be mean to others who want to enjoy it. If I died tomorrow at least I know I enjoyed my life.
@iNintendo no need to call names. Let people live their life. You are absolutely no one to criticize someone else. You take the pandemic seriously. Great for you. Andy doesn’t, great for him.
@iNintendo damo did the right thing, he stopped hostility, he’s not around to decide what is misinformation or not. We the people decide that. He is here to make sure people don’t get out of hand towards each other.
@nessisonett I disagree, this comment section is for the readers opinions not facts. Therefor what moderators check for are people that use insults etc (check the community rules.) They are not to check for facts.
@JGruns wholeheartedly disagree.
@iNintendo this gets back to pretty fundamental stuff around the Internet and being an adult in general. You don't get to choose the kinds of information that circulate about but you can certainly use your mind and predispositions to acquire the truth. Hiding the bad doesn't always leave the good behind.
Well that literally couldn't be worse timing here in the UK. All of retail is really struggling even outside of lockdown.
I assume he must have done this now based on a really good rent offer and hopes to build up business in the new year?
Also that he has a good internet trading business alongside the shop.
@nessisonett so because a handful of people make ignorant comments that gives you the right to make a sweeping generalisation about an entire country? Grow up.
What pandemic?
I don't understand why a line cook like me isn't allowed to make a living, but this guy's opening a videogame store. Totally necessary.
The salon owner down the street can do hair cause her friends have assault rifles. Liquor stores are open. Marijuana dispensaries.
I do take this pandemic seriously, but why am I the only one? People see opportunity in tragedy, and spread disease at the expense of everyone. It's kinda gross.
@nerdface it only feels gross if you allow curiosity about the situation to shrink into judgement of others' decision making. Obviously one should put themselves first, if the alternative is total economic disenfranchisement / or the needs of the family are not being tended to. This person is no more advantageous than any other business owner, he isn't seeking to profit from any different class of fan base than existed prior to Covid.
As someone who also works in restaurant I can share your disdain of the system, and why eating food is not essential one could hardly say.
@Tsusasi Sorry for the outburst, but I really don't like when people attack others for their thoughts. Obviously, you're upset and lashing out. Maybe things will feel better soon. Good luck.
I wish him the best of luck. Sadly these kinds of stores were struggling before a pandemic... Bums me out. Wish we could visit the UK but I think it might be a while.
I hope he makes it. We certainly need more physical stores in the industry.
@nessisonett
Honestly your comments could be considered Xenophobic. It appears you have hatred for Americans for some reason. Covid is real but unfortunately in the USA the government is paying health care providers a premium for Covid care so doctors and hospitals are going out of their way to classify deaths and infections as being primary Covid when in reality it is a secondary problem and not the main issue or even an issue. We have several friends in the health care field and they say it is not unusual to administer multiple Covid tests to patients even though they have no symptoms and came in for an unrelated issue. So the reporting is significantly out of whack now which is why it seems unreal to be out and about and seeing people everywhere, somehow healthy but your area keeps reporting larger and larger case counts. This is where conspiracy theory starts, with a partial basis of truth.
It looks like a great shop that i would love to live closer too.
Not sure about the logic in selling modded consoles so that people don't have to buy the games you sell, not great business logic. You could actually say the same about nintendolife too!
@Kimyonaakuma No no, there's always going to be that one guy who smells of cheese, the know-it-all clerk, the super competitive dude, the hot girl who works weekends whom every scrub in the place falls over themselves in an effort to impress, etc. Some endeavours are worth it though 😂
I saw lots of N64 games in the video but the website just seems to cover Game Boy stuff (I guess it is called the Game Boy Shack). Is there another website for this shop?
I always see articles and videos for awesome looking retro game shops in the UK like this, but they’re never near where I live and they never seem to sell online, which is a real shame. Sore Thumb Games in York is another, they seem to have an awesome selection and probably loads of games I’d buy, but I’m unable to which is a real shame.
I went today. It’s amazing. Hundreds of games, and so many consoles to buy. My wallet was restrained today, but I’m not sure that will last
