David Hayter – the man who voiced super soldier Snake in multiple Metal Gear Solid entries before vacating the role for Hollywood star Kiefer Sutherland – has suggested that Konami is planning to remake the original Metal Gear Solid for a second time.
Hayter dropped the hint during a conversation with YouTuber Dan Allen, saying:
I thought it was just a rumour until the day before yesterday when I got a text from one of the insiders, saying they heard it might really be happening. I only had some confirmation that it might not be a rumour a couple of days ago, and even that was still a rumour… but now it’s an industry rumour, so that tends to be a little more accurate.
Hayter said that the remake was in development for current-gen hardware, which could potentially include the Switch. Metal Gear Solid has already been remade once – for the GameCube in 2004, under the title Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.
During the chat, Hayter expressed his belief that, if Konami were to proceed with the remake, it would need to re-record the dialogue for the game:
They can’t use the original PlayStation [recordings] because the sound card isn’t anywhere near as good as today’s consoles. So what happens is, you run those old tapes and you can hear traffic going by outside and all this room noise, because we didn’t do it in a studio: we did it in some living room. We did re-record the entire game for [GameCube remake] The Twin Snakes, so they could theoretically use those recordings, but again I don’t think the quality would match what needs to be done.
Should this rumour prove to be true, there's a chance that Konami could use an external studio to create the remake, just as it did with Twin Snakes, which was developed by Canadian company Silicon Knights. Earlier this year, our friends over at VGC reported that Konami had relaxed its stance on using external contractors following the poor performance of in-house titles like Metal Gear Survive and Contra: Rogue Corps.
VGC has been told that Konami is not only working on a new Silent Hill with an external party but also has plans to produce new Castlevania and Metal Gear Solid games in this fashion – however, any potential releases are still many years off, the site reports.

enough with all these remakes!
MGS is my favourite game ever. just let it be like it was 1998. it was perfect back then and it is perfect today. art needs to be protected.
There are some many MGS remake rumors the last few week, can't wait to see what it is this time. Another pachinko machine? A Virtual Boy exclusive?
I'd love to have the original PS1 game on the Switch.
Twin Snakes or Guns Of The Patriots for Switch please
If they do remake it again, I hope it's more like Resident Evil Remake and expands on the original adding new areas and sections and new gameplay mechanics. The GC remake disappointed me as it was just a direct copy of the original with some of the MGS2 moves added in.
Plus it had those cut scenes with Snake pulling off all sorts of cool moves and then you go back in game and all he can do is that vanilla punch, punch, kick combo.
I was hoping for a 3D Twin Snakes to follow on from Snake Eater 3D for so very long (8years?!). Just playing through the Shadow Moses stage in MGS 4 and you knew the nostalgia alone would sell a full engine remake. Hopefully this is true and Konami do something similar to how Capcom have remade Resident Evil 2 and 3. Doing a Metal Gear anthology of sorts over the next 10 years would help Konami alot.
I'm on board for a remake. Like the original ones dated (sure you might loved it in the day but it's not accessible to anyone that didn't grow up with those graphics, some dated design etc it's a hard ask plus isn't it stuck on at best a ps3 or vita to play). Twin snakes is too hard and too pricey to get your hands on for most folk.
Impossible, probably the remake is geared towards PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, if the rumours are right.
HOWEVER, they could remaster the MGS HD Collection for all consoles including Switch (with maybe Twin Snakes as a bonus for it)
I wonder if they are gonna add a cool new gimmick to the psychic mantis fight or it becomes a generic bossfight since we can't switch controller ports anymore.
@dBackLash He can now wipe your hard disk drive, brick your console, put it into low power mode during the fight, change the controller number so it no longer responds (you have to set it back up in the home menu), disconnect your console from the internet so it receives a game verification error, introduce a patch part way through the fight so you have to update before you kill him.
There's so many possibilities for that iconic fight now, aswell as changing the game resolution, physics interactions, colour hues, slowly fog up the screen, melt the screen effects, PS5 haptics, Joy con HD rumble. They could proper go to town.
I know Konami has hinted at more games coming to Switch so I wonder if Metal Gear Solid is one of them.
I'm low key hoping that if they do re record the voices, that Sakurai will also be able to reach out and request making additional voice lines for the non Brawl characters in Smash Ultimate to be added through a free update. That's very likely not going to happen for various reasons but it would be cool.
That said, I'd probably buy this remake if it came out on Switch. Remakes do tend to pop up on Nintendo hardware more than original MGS games, so...
@FargusPelagius i’d love a smart home integrated game where game characters could mess you in real life- maybe a horror game that could mess with your lights, ring your doorbell, make thumping and crying noises through your smart speaker and call you on your mobile phone
I like Twin Snakes but it purposely deviated from the original. I believe Kojima instructed the cutscene director Ryuhei Kitamura to purposely make the cutscenes different from the original - so they ended up a bit weirder. (I say that as a fan of Kitamura - I remember really liking his films 'Versus' and 'Aragami'. 'Godzilla: Final Wars' had its moments.). So, from that point of view, maybe a remake makes sense - if they wanted to do something closer to the original in tone.
I can understand why some people here are against remakes and remasters. But I've recently been playing through the Yakuza series. The remakes of the original two games (Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2) are amazing. For me, the PS2 versions are a little bit dated. Even though I do play a lot of old games, those seemed clunky to me and I probably wouldn't have gotten into the series if those were the only option. The remakes retold those stories using the engine and improvements from the later games. And because of those improvements, it really helped me get into that world (which is now one of my favourite series). I can see the same happening for MGS. A good remake could easily bring more fans into the series.
And also, with Yakuza, the remakes don't replace the originals. Yakuza Kiwami 2 in particular is not a 1:1 remake - it's almost like a new game with the same story - so there is still a benefit to playing the original. I'd hope an MGS remake would do the same - not replace the original but exist alongside it.
Yeah I recently played the original for the first time, and it was tough with how dated it felt.
I remember thinking, "I wish I could just play a remake".
So yeah, I'm onboard. Love the rest of the series but did not enjoy this one. A well done remake would be awesome!
It's gonna be hard to go back to the original MGS after playing MGSV.
If it’s a full on remake, guess which platform it’s not coming to?
I would be satisfied with a remaster of Twin Snakes. If they want to remake a Metal Gear game for modern consoles, the MSX original and sequel would be the perfect choice. Well, if this is true, I doubt it's coming to Switch. I'm glad I own Twin Snakes for GameCube, because at this rate it will never see a remaster or rerelease.
I'd be very happy with a collection on Switch, all games up to 5.
@6ch6ris6 but the old copy still exists and now you have a remake? i dont see the problem
@6ch6ris6 lol
it's gonna be a hard few years coming up for you if that's your attitude.
better strap in and get used to it, kiddo
David Hayter is a great voice actor and I love his portrayal of Solid Snake (or any other Snake..?). He also killed it as Zangetsu in Bloodstained.
It would be awesome to have him back after MGS5
Hmm, does Konami have it in them to pull this off? They ain’t what they used to be.
@The_New_Butler Twin Snakes is absolute garbage. Kojima didn't get involve with the game
Probably exclusive to PS5, the rumour about MGS remake by Bluepoint (the studio that did Demon's Souls PS5) has been going around for awhile now.
@Tzara sssssoooooooooo much better than the original.
@6ch6ris6 I think remakes are wonderful if done faithfully like OoT 3D.
Personally, I want the Switch to have as many legacy titles as possible. I’m tired of constantly frivolously buying games and consoles, so I’ve decided that it’s time to stop at a console with classics that I can play again and again.
@Flashlink99 yeah this game is most likely not gonna come to switch.
Also I have heard that the MGS remake could be PlayStation exclusive anyway
Bluepoint Games. Please.
@HamatoYoshi Guns of the Patriots is damn near impossible
That game is basically designed from the ground up specifically for PS3. A remaster or port to another console would be extremely difficult considering how it was basically made to take advantage of how unique the PS3 architecture was, which is why it never got ported to 360 and has also never been re-released
It's already probably one of the most demanding games to run through emulation on PC via RPCS3
@TheFrenchiestFry maybe.
So potentially this game isn’t coming to switch.
HOWEVER. We might get a remaster of the 2004 game on switch maybe
@Shambo hmmm.
If you are talking about the Phantom Pain, the Fox Engine doesn’t work on the switch. In fact that is practically the main reason why Konami is switching to UE4 or 5 for PEA and most of their games.
That packaging is way cooler than what we got in North America.
I foolishly sold my copy of twin snakes years ago, and I've had such a craving to play it as of late. It's ridiculously expensive even used these days.
@Kid_Sickarus That would make for an awesome addition to a horror game! So much untapped potential in todays technology.
What if it is actually a remake of the GBC metal gear solid? So they actually have to record all the audio for it. That would make a sweet Switch exclusive.
@Geostyle Kek, absolutely not, Metal Gear Solid is an utter masterpiece. Twin Snakes a crappy clone
I just want a way to play MGS 1 on a modern console (preferably, selfishly Switch or PS5). Anything but a PS One Classic...
@FargusPelagius He could fool you into thinking your joycon sticks actually work!
I'd be perfectly happy with a straight port — blocky graphics and all; there was a real charm to that formative 3D era.
If Konami is really working on the Metal Gear franchise, I'd like to see a remake of the MSX titles. People have been begging for this for a long time and they know it has a huge commercial appealing, just like FF7R.
Also, they'd better port/remake MGS4 to other platforms because that game doesn't deserve to be tied to an old console forever and I'm sure there's a big audience of new players and people who didn't have a PS3 and never had a chance to play it.
As for The Twin Snakes, a remaster would be nice. I don't think there's need for another remake.
I hope it still stays as a stealth game and not become a watered down third person shooter to please the Uncharted/Last Of Us demographic
@The_New_Butler Isn't Twin Snakes on 3DS as well?
@Grumblevolcano So the point of buying an XSXS is to replay all the old games you own but with them looking and playing better. The point of the PS5 is to re-buy 25 year old games at full price with a new skin. And the point of buying a Switch is to late-adopt a WiiU without the Fisher Price controller that runs without a tether?
@RadioHedgeFund Haha i like that. I am one of the fortunate ones in that regard, 4 years, no problems. It must be infuriating when it happens though.
@The_New_Butler Ahh, that's right. Yeah the whole history of the different iterations is a mess for the series. And the old games really don't play that great these days, classic or no.
@TheFrenchiestFry They tied the engine heavily into PS3's architecture, but there's nothing unique about the game design that couldn't be used in another engine as a remake. I can't imagine Konami just leaving that to rot forever when it's literally the finale of their biggest cash cow.
@RadioHedgeFund oh that cuts deep
@Roibeard64 Classic MGS1 holds up extremely well, and completely BTFO of the awful Twin Snakes de-make. Not to mention the MGS1 was released on PC almost simultaneously with the Playstation version, and it was re-released on GOG not too long ago.
Finally, emulation is a very valid option in the year 2003+18.
@anoyonmus ah, ok, didn't know that. Well, a remake of any game in the series would probably use another engine then, so who knows. I don't think anyone predicted a remake of the first game exclusively on a Nintendo platform, when Twin Snakes arrived (without saying it "needs" to be an exclusive, I don't care. If it's on Switch and it's a good MGS game, I'm happy. If it's not both, I won't get it, and nothing 's lost.
I've gone from total fanboy to completely indifferent to this series. I waited until the last one became a "greatest hits" to buy it, and have yet to play it. I think its been on my shelf for 2 years now? It's hard to believe I used to think this was one of the greatest video game franchises ever made.
I just replayed MGS thanks to GoG but I would welcome remakes of any of the games. Personally, I’d like to see a remake of the original two Metal Gear games and the Gameboy Color game, MGS Ghost Babel, to see them in 3D.
I think Metal Slug Solid is what the world needs. Watch this and you'll know.
"Metal Gear Solid: Cinematic Pachinko Action"
@KoiRah emulation isn't for everyone and really like you could say just emulate any game and if we all did that industry would collapse into a mess like the modern music industry . Sorry but visually ps1 one era games do not hold up well.at all characters tend not to have faces at all.
I loved TTS because I had no nostalgic reason to like Ps1 one, as such I was way more aware of its faults.
I'm not saying it's bad but every game is of its time and remakes update them to allow a new audience to experience them and helps accessibility. Like look at resident evil 2 remake that's a great example.
I don't get this begrudgery people show of don't remake it its perfect. Like unless it's stupidly soon it allows new fans and some nostalgic old fans to experience it for either the first time or I'm a new way. Plus original isn't going away.
How are industry insider rumors any better? I've heard so many industry insider rumors over the years that turned out to be utter nonsense that I don't take any of them seriously.
Far as I can tell, these so-called insiders are nothing but janitors tweeting about junk they found in trash cans they were emptying.
@TheFrenchiestFry
Demon's Souls was also a PS3 exclusive but got a full fledge remake from the ground up on PS5. I see no reason for Metal Gear Solid 4 not to get the same treatment other than Konami being too cheap and lazy to put in the effort.
@MortalKombat2007 Demon's Souls is not an apt comparison whatsoever
That's a complete from the ground up remake designed specifically to take advantage of new gen hardware much like Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 was, or in the case of MGS, what Twin Snakes was for GameCube.
Porting or remastering MGS4 would take a lot of effort given that unlike other PS3 exclusives or games on PS3 it took specific advantage of the PS3's hardware. It's still probably one of the most demanding games on the console and there's a reason it shipped on a dual-layered Blu-ray when it came out
Another hurdle that people likely forget to consider when it comes to re-releasing the game is that there's an obscene amount of product placement for stuff like Apple products all over the game that would likely involve an extensive and likely expensive negotiation with that company in the event they release the game again. There's literally an in game mechanic involving playing BGM during missions on Snake's personal iPod
@TheFrenchiestFry
Konami could remake MSGS4 from the ground up if they invest the time and money. Like any other high profile game, it would be costly and hard work but it can be done if Konami has the profits to do so. I never said they could port or remaster MGS4 from the PS3.
Please MGS1 and Snake Eater for Switch! Will gladly rebuy them-and 3 for the fifth time _____!_____
Anyone claiming MGS1 TWIN SNAKE isn’t superior clearly follows the hate crowds. Except only 1 scene where Snake jumps off a flying rocket propelled toward him, everything else was superb. The choreography was little over the top, but so ahead of its time and even cool looking for today’s standards-like the last scene with Gray Fox. Who doesn’t want to play it easy, doesn’t have to use FPS mode at all! It has to come to Switch! And Snake Eater too!
@Znake True, though you gotta admit that changing the voice actor for Gray Fox took away from the original death scene’s charm. Beside that, I have nothing with the Matrix-like direction of the cutscenes overall
As mentioned previously this is likely the rumored Bluepoint remake which has been floated around ever since Demon's Souls came out and would likely be a PS5 exclusive.
A remaster of the MGS pachinko machine.
Yeah you are right, but who wants doesn’t have to enter first person mode at all. It’s the same as games today can change difficulty on the go. But of course with a re/remake that could get easily fixed, adding more structures to the center so you can’t see Ocelot when he’s trying to stay in cover. Nonetheless, this could be said about more bosses-Mantis, Raven..., slight advantage could be taken if we overuse the FPS aiming, but MGS is about intense atmosphere and great characters. I don’t think any MGS bosses are as creative as Zelda’s for example, it’s mostly dodge/shoot, but the sneaking is what makes it fun. I mean I don’t necessarily play MGS for hard bosses-even the highest difficulty is not crazy hard, but it’s about the intense journey of a super cool character. The gameplay was perfected in MGS3, but 1 is still the best for me. I wish they added more clever techniques to the gameplay-like in Super Metroid-you see an animal wall jump, then you try it and can do it. Ocelot could shoot you by rebounding bullets-Snake could try the same. The game could easily add more strategy if more thought is put it into it-Like you could change supplies to the soldier trucks-for example you order from base laser sights, deliver them to the trucks, and then when you toss smoke grenade, you will see where they aim. This could remove the map and focus on more clever sneaking. I could go on and on with new features I would implement, but the original is still a great game. If they do remake it, I home they enable older graphical style, with modern gameplay just to preserve the original art style.
@shineget64 I think Konami owns the rights to MGS, so I don’t believe it would be a PS exclusive. Seeing that MGS was always released on Xbox-it wouldn’t make any sense to skip Switch. Konami need money now, and focusing on more powerful hardware like Xbox that sold around 40mil in 7-8years, where the Switch sold over 80mil units in just 4 years- this would cut their sales drastically. Konami needs to sell numbers, and they can achieve crazy sales with both Switch and PS. I don’t care for graphics, if the game plays great and has updated gameplay-I would gladly take it even with ps2 graphics-which they could do-and no more talk that Switch can’t handle it. If Switch handles Doom Eternal, everything else is just a matter of effort, and seeing the success of Switch, they can’t skip it. Anyway New Switch is coming, and having portable console around the same power range as ps4, who needs better graphics. Nintendo definitely needs at least one amazing Third Person Shooter, there are many fun but mediocre ones/don’t count Splatoon, which is online mostly, but it needs phenomenal single player experience. If Switch gets at least 1MGS and Mass Effect 2, I am satisfied:)
The thing is Konami is just licensing their IPs out they're not going to be making it themselves. The Bluepoint MGS rumor has been floating around for 6 months now so it's likely if it's true that Konami simply licensed out MGS to Sony to do this remake. Pair it with the rumor that Microsoft is looking to secure Kojima's next game as an exclusive on Xbox we may be getting a showdown of MGS vs. Kojima's new game on competing platforms. Sad to say, but Switch won't really be seeing any of this action.
@6ch6ris6 A HD remaster like Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3/Peach Walker would be alot better, since the games still look really good, just needs to be put onto modern systems.
Would love to see them port or remake the Iga Castlevania games for switch. Especially the DS ones.
@shineget64 That’s right, but Konami hasn’t confirmed anything about giving the IP away. I think that much smarter would be to just polish Twin Snake-no work needs to be done on Konami’s side and it wouldn’t cost them anything. Plus they would get much more money if the game landed on all consoles and they got all the money from those sales. Such sales would also give them a nice estimation of market demand, and based on that they could explore the IP further. Castlevania, Contra, Silent Hill and MGS are their biggest assets. If Konami sells the IP it would definitely mark their end, renting it out could make some sense, but not from perspective of Sony-if they invest so much money into developing and maybe continuing MGS, they would want to have a control over it-it would be like fixing, tuning and maintaining a car from rental. Konami also must know that MGS is their most desired IP, and leaving it would be crazy. I hope K will keep it and also regarding their bitter relationship with Kojima-I don’t think they would give it back to him after investing so much into MGSV( like 90M usd). Now we see K is reestablishing some positions on the market with smaller Indies and collections, this would give them more funds to focus on large IPs.
I'll just buy the original on GOG.
If they remake it, they'll have to re-do everything, not just the sound. The gameplay is built around the fixed camera angles and stylized simplicity of the graphics and geometry. It works in the original context, but it wouldn't work with, say, MGS V mechanics.
At that point, though, it'd just be a different game. Kind of like how Final Fantasy VII Remake is not really a replacement for the original.
@Splodge Absolutely loved Ryuhei Kitamura's take on the action scenes in the twin snakes. Alive is a movie I always love rewatching from time to time.
I feel the same way about the Yakuza franchise and absolutely understand the need for such remakes. I would have never gotten into the Yakuza franchise weren't it for kiwami 1. It's a tough feet to ask gamers new to a series to try an aged original in the hopes to have them see what's so special about it. Usually late comers don't understand what the fuss is about. Unlike oftentimes unnecessary movie remakes, games actually are necessary to revitalise a series.
