@DarthNocturnal Right, but all those changes were made by the developers themselves. Iono. Call me a purist who loves history being kept as is, but if someone were to change the system, it should be the creator of said system. I'm not here to attack people who mod controllers or systems. Having a quickfire controller is a nifty thing to have. I think it's a wonderful aspect of creativity and believe more people should do it. However, I appreciate those who retain a system to how it was originally because the creator made it that way. Thus any improvement on the system or gameplay would alter how the creator meant it to be played.
@Dankykong At least among my friend group, Samus was always used. I personally didn't like her, but that's because I was Kirby, and that supercharge blast always got me when I was in air.
@DarthNocturnal I disagree. By making it better, you change the experience. People may hate the stick, but that's what made it the N64. Same thing with glitches in games. Some of them may be frustrating, but the awareness of it is what adds to the legend (granted, unless the glitch utterly ruins the game—and I don't think the stick is so detrimental that no one can play Smash64).
Now do I recommend that all games should have glitches? No. Should all hardware have clunky aspects to it when first released? No. But the product has been made and what is to be experienced has been solidified. A surface-level paint job won't change that, but improving a controller will.
I'm more concerned that Nintendo's reputation is forever scarred by the Wii franchise for being "light gaming" and now the Wii U being a weak console. I wonder what will happen during the next generation.
@Quorthon fair enough. While it wasn't explicitly stated, you can definitely see how it left room for question. Seeing how I'm a music & special-ed teacher, you can understand where I'd want no precedent for that matter. Apologies for being overly anticipatory.
@Quorthon I was nodding my head in agreeance to much of your comment until I hit this: "They're just words. If words so harm you, that is really a "you" problem, and the rest of the community shouldn't be punished for it."
No.
Never blame the victim of harassment. I don't care if you're being hyperbolic to make a point—too many people have suffered in the name of the blind greater good. Is it a shame that Swap Note is dead because of people being taken advantage of? Yes. Is it annoyance that we have to reword our vocabulary to align with politically correct words? Yes. Is it the parents or community's job to intervene to help others with abuse rather than having a blanket approach from a company or government to change our way of life? Yes. That said, do NOT blame the victims for being abused. They don't deserve it.
@akaDv8R Right, and I completely understand your resignation. I think I'm int he same boat as you—while it's a darn shame, I understand where Nintendo is coming from. I'm just tired of people on BOTH ends of the argument belittling the other side. high five for understanding Though I haven't been following CoD within the past x iterations... and definitely never played t on a Nintendo console.
@MadAdam81 Right, and I probably am going to do that. Sadly, however, I only have four other friends who own a Wii U and only two who wil probably get Splatoon. So you can understand my disappointment in no-stranger-chat. Granted, I get the whole Stranger Danger policy Nintendo has.
@eaglebob345 Why? Because you want to play it but don't own a N3DS? The fact that they got the game's immense world and fluid gameplay onto the new portable astonished even the original developers. There's no way the 3DS, a handheld whose processing power is poor (relatively). The drawbacks of running it on the 3DS isn't multiple cartridges ( which has nothing to do with CPU but rather capacity), but rather something rather jittery, cramped, and undesirable.
That said, I'm disappointed that people would cancel their orders due to the lack of VC AND even more disappointed that the Wii U does not support LAN:P
Okay. I'm seriously tired of people ridiculing voice chat to "12- year old boys" throwing fbombs. You're card stacking. If you have no desire in using voice chat, then fine — that's your prerogative and that's chill. But please recognize that where there is strategy, there is an element desiring coordination — which VC solves. So please recognize that despite your inclination to err from using VC there is use to it and you at least SOMEWHAT understand that we have a plight to some extent.
Okay, I don't get the mentality of those who do not want exclusive N3DS titles. Sure, it means those who don't have the N3DS can't play it, but then purchase one! I don't have one myself... yet, but if a new console has more processing power, why are we encouraging developers not to use it? It's as if we're asking developers to hold back their creativity because there's a large group of people who don't/can't buy the new handheld. If you really love new games, get new systems.
Personally, I've always have been a fan of playing games on the console it was intended for. Granted, that means buying certain games is a pain, so I see the benefit of VC. But seeing how that was a big aspect this Direct, I'm a bit disappointed. I love that Nintendo gets sentimental about a lot of things, but there's apoint where you need some novelty. It existed, but very little in this Direct. Meh. I am hopeful for E3, though... please don't let me down.
I'd rather a better designed portable display. Right now retailers sell a few of the portable bags, but I have not found one I've liked. None feel fully secure during transport and none are transparent (maybe for the best, but that is a good option to have perhaps...?). If this was about security, portability, and display, I'd go for it.
Okay, as odd as this may be, dust is a thing, and you don't need to be a collector who wishes to sell on ebay to not like dust corroding your amiibo. One has to be in it for the long-term. Iono if this is the permanent solution... afterall, it means I have to regather the casing from the amiibo I've already bought. And as silly as it may look, it makes sense. As for a kickstarter? Yeah. A bit odd.
Mm... this seems like a patched job of Minecraft. While it provides different elements, the foundation is the same. Plus, mechanics that I felt made Mincecraft unique was its realism in the midst of non-realism physics. Gold=weak. It took longer to mine out diamonds than it did for cobblestone. You couldn't just mine out gold with the same kind of pickaxe you use to mine iron. Yes, this is a different beast, but it's too hard to not compare it to what it supposedly pays tribute to.
@DarthNocturnal because sci-fi always leads to the pushing or anticipation of scientific novelties. Take any of Bradbury's books and you can see that his sci-fi was met in the future. Or, if you want to put it in gaming terms, sci-fi is the developer while science is the coder.
This game is easily worth $20. I'm really looking forward to it. I've played a game somewhat similar called Artemis, where different people control different aspects of a ship. I love it and look forward to playing it
I think if we've learned anything from these past few years, it's that Nintendo can't please everyone and NIntendo critics are going to... critique. It's just fascinating to see the comments on this topic all over the web.
I'm looking forward to what Nintendo creates. I may not buy it, but I'm sure it will be solid.
Nintendo has always wanted to make games that fit the hardware. The question is: what advantages do smartphones have that 3DSs don't? As small as it might be, one big advantage is two finger touch. I don't know to what extent that could enhance the gameplay, but Nintendo has always pushed the limits of what different technology can do [well... minus the Wii U. I still find that there are untapped ideas that could be used with the gamepad]. What are some other hardware differences that you think Ninty could use with smartphones?
You traditionalists. Cmon, guys. Nintendo's roots have always been with the Youth (and those who were crazy enough [like us] to stay with the sentiment of good games). Just as the Gameboy was our way of life, the youth today are attracted today mobile gaming. Yes, Nintendo should beware of where they tread, but if we've learned anything about the 125 year old company: THEY ARE CAREFUL. If anything, they've made mistakes in being too careful/conservative (e.g. the Play Station fiasco). Do I think this is a great idea? Potentially yes, but it's too early to tell. But c'mon: we don't need any Michael Pachter's here, saying it's the mark of Nintendo 3rd Party status.
This is... very disappointing. I was really looking forward to Bowser mode since, as stated, it's the only one that really stands out. But the fact that there are only 10 minigames is greatly discouraging. I feel like that mode would instantly lose color after three play-throughs. It makes me wonder what most of the focus on this game went. I'll eventually buy it, but I am very disappointed at how small they pushed their creativity. I think it's fair to say that we miss Hudson Soft.
@Pandaman Fair enough. I forget that we're this would have to be a 3D platformer, which you're right: few games have surpassed Mario 64s finesse. Granted, if Yacht Games was aiming to capture the feel of the greatest NES games [platformers being many of the greats]. then do you think they'd move away from the platforming genre if they made Shovel Knight 64? If so, would that change any impression/thoughts on Shovel Knight 64?
@hiptanaka I totally get you. Though, Yacht Clubs made exceptions with Shovel Knight, as far as being loyal to the NES limitations (e.g.: having a wider color palette than the NES actually had). That means that they'd try to focus on SOMETHING that made the N64 sentimental for us that's separate from modern gaming [if there is anything... have any thoughts what that might be if at all? ]
@Krambo42 Was it that era or the N64 as a whole? And just out of curiousity, be it era or console, what did you not like about it? [This isn't limited to just Krambo, guise ]
It's hilarious how NES and SNES retro games are considered sentimental and wonderfully simplistic, but N64 retro... >_> Is it because 3D is too many degrees close to modern, yet we know how bad the polygons were?
To add on to what @Sakura 's comment, Nintendo HAS faced the disaster before of overproduction: the Wii U during launch. The demand was relatively low and they produced way too much where stores were stocked full of them, making the market even less appealing. Nintendo does not want to make that same mistake.
That said, there is a healthy balance that I think Nintendo should find. I'm glad they're making more, but it'd be nice if they could be a bit more liberal with their sharings.

@DarthNocturnal To make it authentic. This is just to spicen up the look, not to change the experience.
