Update: Yacht Club Games has responded to this news on Twitter, and claims that while a physical release of Shovel Knight would be amazing, this listing is actually a mistake:
Original story: Shovel Knight is getting a physical release on the Nintendo 3DS, according to retailer Best Buy.
The game - which was once a Nintendo exclusive - is also getting boxed copies on the PS4 and Xbox One. All versions are expected to launch on September 15th in North America.
The price will be $29.99 - twice the cost of the digital version. It is unknown at this time if the boxed edition will feature any exclusive content to justify this.

Well good for those that haven't played it yet or would like a second copy retail. I'm happy with mine on the 3ds!
Huh, that's unexpected. I don't think I'll pick it up, digital is probaly good for me. Unless it's got a lot of new features.
I always prefer having my games boxed. I'll probably buy it.
Well I have it on my Wii U. I'll probably get the physical version on the 3DS. That is if it gets released in Europe.
No thanks.
Even if I didn't already have the game, I wouldn't pay twice as much for the physical version unless it contains significantly more content.
Cartridges are nice and all, but I prefer to have my smaller download titles as actual downloads that I can just pick up and play a bit here and there without having to change cartridges each time.
... well now I wish I bought the Wii U version instead of the 3DS one.
doesnt have a nostalgia effect on me. to me its just another easy to make and easy to sell game which I wont be getting.
Not for that price....
I wish they would release a boxes wii u copy of the game. I prefer physical copies, and would love to have one for that console. I guess it isn't out of the question that they may release one
I'd get a boxed copy of it releases in the UK for £19.99 or less. Glad I got it on Wii U only. It was a really enjoyable game.
I'll pick it up because I like physical releases and it is a way to show support for the company. I hope they include the Plague Knight DLC on the cartridge itself.
Put it on an NES cartridge and I will pay $50!
@New_3DaSh_XL Are you excited for this?
@Justaguest "easy to make"... lol
I do like having physical games.... Maybe I'll buy it. Not much sense in paying for a game essentially three times though.
The practicality in me says no, but the sentimental in me says yes...
@Justaguest
Doesn't have a nostalgic effect on me either, since most of the games that "inspired it" were too clunky and/or frustratingly difficult for me to play back in the day... Luckily, Shovel Knight isn't either of these things.
I bought Shovel Knight day one on Wii U and had always considered getting it on 3DS as well. Looks like now I'll be getting the physical copy because I love collecting games. I primarily collect handheld games (more so than console games), so this was the perfect situation for me!
@Mikau94
If the developer would wait until ALL dlc has been released, then put that into a physical "Collector's Edition"... I would be interested in a 3DS cartridge... Shovel Knight on a CD/DVD/BR disc just seems wrong.
Will buy it physical if it get released physical in europe too.
I always prefer having my games boxed. I'll probably buy it!!!!!!
Yes I will get the box copy on 3DS, hopefully a Wii U version will come too.
I've yet to buy it on 3DS... and now I may wait. If this includes some extra and exclusive content, I'll totally pick it up. I own it and beat it on Wii U, but it was so good I can't help but want to keep throwing money at it.
Maybe the extra $ 15 is for amiibo support! Won't you happily spend some more money to play as Mario in a SNES look-a-like videogame!?! It would be awesome!!!
Since I have yet to buy it on 3DS I guess I will hold and get the PS4 cross buy digital to play as Kratos on my Vita. There will be chaos!
I do like that digital is less expensive than physical though.
No Wii U, seriously?
It better have some other stuff as well, because I ain't paying 15 euros for a box.
Even if the retail copy came with Plague of Shadows, it wouldn't justify the $30 price tag (especially since it's free DLC anyway...). Shovel Knight is the reason I like Yacht Club Games, but this is some stupid crap they're trying to pull!
@Tazcat2011 It should always be. The cut to the retailer doesn't have to be paid.
i havent managed to play it yet, so would probably pick up a boxed copy over digital.
That's really expensive... I plan on getting it on the Wii U anyway, so I'll still be getting it digitally, whenever I get it.
@allav866 How do you mean? Do you think they are publishing and printing the carts? Do you think they are choosing the price? Nope.......this is most likely being handled by someone like askys. Yacht Club can't afford to do a campaign like this on their own. Some publisher probably reached out to them asking if they could have the physical rights for x amount of cash and Yacht Club was probably excited to have retail releases as well as more cash for more games/equipment to work with.
I'll pick it up and put it next to my wii edition of Bit Trip complete
I really like the game, but I'm not gonna buy it again at twice the price
The price is a bit high when you consider Duck Tales Remastered is $15 in digital form and $20 in physical which is quite fair. Double the price for physical that likely won't have ALL of the content (due to it being worked on at time of release) is not cool at all. If they wait until all of the content is finished (all Kickstarter goals) and the go for physical, I would consider a double dip (technically a triple when you consider the high physical price). I want to support them more but I already put my faith in them when I backed them on Kickstarter.
If a boxed copy came to WiiU, I would buy it in a heartbeat (despite already owning it digitally).
HOWEVER, I would only consider buying it physically if it included all the DLC. Otherwise, that seems kinda pointless.
Holy crap! I will absolutely buy a boxed copy. Hope it has a manual too! (In every version of the game)
It would be good to see 8 bit style box art with this. If they put a bit of care and attention into it, similar to the nostalgic nature of the game itself I'll be interested in picking a copy up.
Was planning on getting the 3DS version on the eShop, but now knowing a physical release is on the way, I'll get that and support Yacht Club for making such an amazing game!
@sketchturner I cannot see how all the DLC is going to be ready by that point. (Presuming the promises on the kickstarter are to be kept).
Likely, for that price, it will come with additional content.
I'm betting/hoping for an Amiibo pack-in.
Oh well, totally happy with my Kickstarter digital copy on 3DS, esp with DLC coming soon
I already own it for my Wii U. I will not purchase this for my 3DS. However, if you don't own it already, and you don't mind paying double, go for it. If you're mad about the price being doubled.....then buy the digital version at half the price.
Digital will be much cheaper, but I'd still rather own physical.
Definitely interested in the 3DS retail release.
Its fake, look on YC Games twitter
$20 for a retail version would be a much wiser price.
I bought it on both eshops its beautiful.
@Justaguest How easy is it to make an actually great game? Shovel Knight is inspired by classic 8 bit games, but that's as far as it takes it. Read the reviews. The only game I played that it's similar to is Zelda 2 and its barely visible. It's legitimately good on its own merits.
Unfortunately this news is false. The game's developer, Yacht Club Games confirmed this.
Even when it's fake the WiiU gets left out.
@Knuckles - Were it real... no. I already own two copies of the game, I don't need a third on a system I already have it on.
Aw... a retail release for Shovel Knight was the best news I had heard all day!
still buying even though fake.
Glad I didn't see this til after it was confirmed to be false. Definitely would buy it though.
