Nintendo of America has been pretty creative with its video commercials over the past 12-18 months, with live-action and entertaining campaigns for titles such as Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, and it's also adopting a quirky approach for the New Nintendo 3DS XL.
The "New is Good" videos feature a University 'Professor' demonstrating the improved features of the New XL models, in these cases the C-Stick, super stable 3D and faster CPU. Naturally there are Mario and Luigi mascots on hand, and the overall tone is certainly another step away from the bland infomercial approach that's so common in marketing.
We're not quite sure what to make of these just yet, but we'd like to know what you think - check them out below.

NEW IS GOOD!!!! it reminds me to IT´S SOO BADDDD jajajajjaa
NEW IS GOOD! love that line, perfect character voice, he should continue to do ads for Nintendo.
These ads are great. They do a really good job of showing that it's not just the same 3DS and makes owners of the old one feel like **** for not owning the new one XD Not exactly, but still. Plus Luigi is hilarious.
I like these adverts! They're catchy while not taking themselves seriously at the same time.
The one thing I wonder is if some future 3DS games will require the N3DS hardware over the original. That would get ugly pretty quick. I can see torches and pitchforks at Nintendo HQ if that ever came to be.
I remember some folks saying that one Majora's Mask UK commercial felt pretty retro, but I think these N3DS commercials really takes the cake right now.
The minimalistic live-action, mascot character shenanigans, the actor being way outside of the primary demographic range, and the serious tone of the music. It definitely feels like a commercial more fitting 10+ years ago as opposed to today. And that's what probably makes them so charming to me.
Much better than any Nintendo ad I've seen recently.
Appeals to kids without being off putting to adults and teenagers.
These ads are basically saying, "Sure, our last product was pretty crappy, but this new one isn't!"
Anyone remember the thankfully short-lived "touching is good" campaign for the original DS?
I like these commercials. Pretty funny.
I don't like these commercials. He seems too boring. I would prefer something more fun and upbeat.
Well done. well done.
@DarthNocturnal splitting a customer base if it is indeed an absolute fact that Xenoblade Chronicles requires the N3DS hardware. I could see some
Sure many will upgrade but having the launch LoZ: OOT 3DS bundle, I love the about of Fine detail that was put into the original and and I just don't want to part with just yet.
well done, nintendo. I love the intense music in the background!
they`re decent, humor coupled with costumes is a good fit for Nintendo commercials. i think the demonstrations for the 2 last ads could have been done better, but these are a step up from most Nintendo commercials, better than watching awkward teens for sure
Love these.
The Luigi foot race had me chuckling actually.
The cheese level with all the dramatic music and the catchphrase works.
I mean it's not a catchphrase unless people could actually find themselves using it and "New is good" fits the bill. Plus, you can do it while using a deep voice earnestly as if no one had ever thought of that before.
I guess Nintendo is learning to explain why people should upgrade their systems.....lesson learned from Wii U?
I love Mario and Luigi fiddling with the lab equipment in the background! ha ha!
@HylianJowi
I came to comment about the same thing. Looks like someone beat me to it!
@ungibbed It's already confirmed that Xenoblade Chronicles 3D will be a n3DS exclusive.
If only they did adverts like this to launch the wii u. Then people would have known it was a new console.
I like it! New is good indeed.
New... is good...
This is going to be the next 'Wii would like to play'
Awesome.
These are awsome ads. Make also Liam neeson do commercials for Wii U
@SuprisedStar Looks at 3DS Yep, they they are totally going to die soon. It official even though you have no facts to back that statement up. If you came to this site just to be a nostalgiafag and just suck up to the Gamecube like it your Goddess you came for the wrong reason.
Anyway, before I turn this into a flamewar and maybe get myself ban, I digress. I love when Nintendo make these types of ads. They're soo cheesy and witty that I sometimes burst out laughing.
@ungibbed I'm sure it will be stuff like 60fps 3D instead of 30 etc etc. NoE's website states that future games will be faster and or better on new 3DS. that probably means most games are still coming to 3DS. (It would be dumb not to honestly, ports like Xenoblade don't matter that much since they aren't "new")
@SuprisedStar The GameCube has nothing to do with this. Nintendo's handhelds are still going strong. They still have the market in a stranglehold, even with the mobile market slowly chipping away at the handheld market.
@IceClimbers I was talking about the DS not the Gamecube.
These commercials are my jam. I'm loving these. lol A perfect marriage of silliness and information.
@Chaozrush21 You might like their new path with micro transactions, DLC and smartphone apps, but other people don't and liked them much better when you bought a game, you got a game and nothing else. I'm worried for their future.
O... kay.
@Spectra_Twilight Sigh, you're right. Also, the first micro-transaction game was either Steel Diver: Sub Wars or Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, don't know which one. I own and adore my Wii U, but I think they are going down the wrong path. Just my opinions.
"New is good" — from a company that's so tied to its past [which isn't a bad thing per se, but it's ironic ]
Very cute commercials. The "new" name also sounds right and I think they chose the best name to make their point, not sure what people had against it.
Nice line! New is goooooooooooddddddddd!
I think they're fine. Above average for Nintendo.
I like how it truly puts the emphasis on "new" and talks about it's features. That way people should know what they're getting into before they buy it. Way better than how they handled the Wii U and early 3DS marketing.
Now they just need to make a ' U is Good ' commercial to friggin advertise wii u.
Reminds me of the "touching is good" motto for DS advertisements XD
@HylianJowi There's Zero Suit Samus on bottom screen.
If Nintendo continues with these types of commercials, then they will solve some of their marketing problems. These are so silly, yet funny and catchy, that you can't not love them. GG Nintendo, GG.
The second video is private for some reason.
They are good simple and straight to the point. And thats a good thing.
These ads have just the right combination of informative and weird. They remind me of the quirky ads of the 90s, only with less radical guitar riffs, dude.
Well done Luigi, well done...
@Spectra_Twilight I just thought they should still be the same as they always were but still just refining and mixing the old with the new each gen. I guess that is primitive thinking though. Never mind, thank you for your replies.
The guy does have a bit of a catchy voice, but these commercials are pretty terrible...
@Nik-Davies I felt bad, dont know why but I did...
@MisterMan No, they're basically saying "Our last product was good, but this new one is better!"
"The New Nintendo 3DS XL System"
This is a total mouthful but these were pretty decent commercials
These are pretty fun, and highlight the new features and Majora's Mask in a way that manages to be surprising and entertaining.
They need to release the non-XL N3DS already. I'm never buying this oversized thing!
@ungibbed If I'm not mistaken Xenoblade Chronicles 3D needs the New 3DS/XL
@TheLordAndrew I find that rather interesting. I have ordered a N3DS XL despite my love of my original OOT limited edition. Who knows, years from now my current model will have some collectable value in the years to come.
Not bad!
