Following its launch on 13th February, the New Nintendo 3DS XL is heading into that post-hype period of sales, when Nintendo's focus shifts away from exciting dedicated fans to winning over those on the fence. The April arrival of system-exclusive Xenoblade Chronicles 3D will play a major role, while Nintendo will also be focused on promoting the new hardware's features.
The C-Stick and amiibo support are clearly at the core of Nintendo of America's marketing plans, based on an upcoming promotion with Best Buy this weekend. A number of the retailer's stores will offer hands-on opportunities with the New 3DS XL, using amiibo in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (share your amiibo stock jokes in the comments section), a chance to play two big releases and pick up a Mii StreetPass from Eiji Aonuma and others. The press release blurb is below.
Stop by select Best Buy stores from 1 to 4 p.m. (local time) on March 7 to try out the New Nintendo 3DS XL system with amiibo figures in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. You can also play the Nintendo 3DS games everyone is talking about: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Bring your Nintendo 3DS system with you for the chance to get a special Mii character of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D producer, Eiji Aonuma, and collect Mii characters to fill puzzle panels in Puzzle Swap and help out in StreetPass Mii Plaza games.
Will any of you be heading out to your local Best Buy for this on Saturday? You can check whether your store is taking part here.

How about NOA teams up with Best Buy to supply more Meta Knight Amiibos?
Damn I'm so close to getting all the puzzle pieces but it's obvious this must mean there'll be a new puzzle inbound.
How about NoA Teams up with itself too to do a better job?
I'm an hour away from a location. I'll pass.
@Grumblevolcano Not really, you can always exchange puzzle pieces at Best Buy. If they announced another National Street Pass Weekend, then I would agree with you.
How about Nintendo supply Best Buy with more amiibos? And find somewhere in the US to sell the Lucario amiibo already! >_<
Hoe about some limited edition, retailer-exclusive Majora's Mask amiibo, Nintendo? Say, 1,000 for all territories combined?
Still waiting on the standard New 3DS, which is the "true" New 3DS. I'm holding out until they release it, and even then I'll likely hesitate since they've been so baffling recently.
I wonder if the best buys in Canada will get this too.
Yes Best Buy always does the spot pass street pass, but if there are a lot of local people that bring their 3DSes then you'll get TONS of street passes. Too bad the closest PARTICIPATING Best Buy to me is 4 hours away.
@Grumblevolcano
I almost had all of them too... But NOA wasn't able to transfer my Street pass data when they did the system transfer for me.
Back to square one ;(
I'll toss my hat in for more Amiibos, especially the store exclusive Meta Knight. In my area it seems like the only retailer still on the ball is TRU who get constant restock of hot characters.
Of FREAKING Course the closest store that is doing this is "ONLY" 2 hours away from me...
Can't ever do one that is 2 blocks away from me!
[insert "Amiibo stock shortage" comment here]
You know, speaking of streetpass, I wish they'd allow for a queue of over 10 at a time... Events like these have you GLUED to the screen holding the R-button to fast-forward through all that Mr. Mendell take-your-time-and-have-fun and hello goodbye BS. I spend so much time per day skipping through all of this stuff when I really just want to build my army and collect puzzle pieces. Come on isn't it really all about getting all the outfits with plaza tickets?
Of course, of all places in San Diego, they choose the Best Buy located in the wealthier community.
@Daditude_ Same here. Though it would be nice to get so many Street Pass Mii characters in one trip.
@JellySplat "Back to [puzzle piece] one."
Reggie knows full well that I'm not on the fence, it's more like a bench, waiting for a bus to come...even though I've been told that my bus isn't coming to America.
Wichita? Not worth a 3 hour drive.
@Mus1cLov3r
Ahhhh... I see what you did there
None within 100 miles of my area...
Assuming the other StreetPass hits mentioned are the normal 6 Nintendo Zone hits you can get at any Best Buy, I have no interest in this event even if my local Best Buy was participating, and I'm certainly not driving the 30 miles or so to the nearest location that is participating.
I'm curious what offers they were going to offer. I need to buy a new 3ds since my launch 3ds broke in an accident. Any form of discount on console + monster hunter would be great.
How about teaming up with a responsible vendor to make sure more than enough of all the Amiibo are at market globally to put scalping the things to death. No one should feel forced to buy a new product for 3-4x the going rate due to some fool who can stand at a store the moment it opens or can sit online all day and snap up stuff as soon as it pops up off of backorder.
Uggghh I can't trust my Best Buy to do this, 60% or so of the time I go there their darn relay isn't working. Them and Starbucks I tell ya. The fact that it says "local time" makes me think I can't do the home renaming thing either.
Sigh... Idaho and their lack of this. Oh well. Last time I went to something like this I waited for 6 hours and still didn't play. I did get 3 puzzle swap puzzles complete, so I would go again.
