Next Friday, Klonoa makes his grand return after over a decade out of the limelight. Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series launches on 8th July, and it sees Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil get the remaster treatment. But after such a long break since the Wii remake and multiple other spin-offs, what is in Klonoa's future?
In an interview in Lock-On's upcoming fourth issue — which you can pre-order here — the collection's producer, Ryo Ishida, hopes that the upcoming remasters will lead to more Klonoa games in the future (thanks, VGC!).
Ishida recognises that the main target of the Reverie Series is the long-time fans who have been begging for the Dream Traveller to make his return, but also hopes the collection is successful as it may lead to "opportunities":
With Klonoa, since there’s been large gaps between the release of the games, at this 25th anniversary’s timing, we decided to release this title so people can play the original [games] first... And if this remastered version is loved by the community, there might be opportunities to further expand the Klonoa IP and do other remasters of other titles as well... The first goal and idea behind the [Phantasy Reverie Series] itself is to spread awareness and reignite the Klonoa IP.
Klonoa is most famous for his two Sony platforming games, but the adorable black and white mascot also had adventures on the GBA, WonderSwan, and even a beach volleyball game!

In the same interview, marketing manager Moa Ikeuchi also backed up Ishida on the collection's target audience, and reiterates that the passionate fanbase is what has made these remasters possible:
The main target is veteran gamers who still love Klonoa. As you know, Klonoa is a title and character that is still loved and supported by many people. It’s because of these veteran gamers and our existing fans […] that we were able to successfully reinvent and reveal the remastered version on the 25th anniversary.
Alongside the memories that our existing fans have, we have also made the game more appealing and [suitable for younger gamers] and also people who haven’t [discovered Klonoa] yet. That’s why even though our main target is veteran gamers, we hope that a large variety of game fans will enjoy and experience the charm and appeal of the original Klonoa games.
We would love to see Klonoa's return make a big splash, but the series has always struggled in sales. Around the time the Wii remake came out, series creator Hideo Yoshizawa said of a third game that "it all depends on the sales of the new Wii game". However, in the game's first week of release in 2008, the Wii title only managed to rack up 5,800 sales.
Hopefully Phantasy Reverie Series does a bit better and we all get that Beach Volleyball remake that we're looking for! If you're itching for more Klonoa before 8th July, you can hop on over to the Japanese eShop and download a free demo right now.

I may get it on sale, but I’ll get it and any other Klonoa they put out
It always be like this, ain’t it? I will probably wait for Klonoa but I will get PAC man tho
I'll be buying this and Nier asap
Any info about a Western demo?
Klonoa is so cool 😎
I would really love to see more Klonoa. It's too under appreciated.
I think this is exactly the type of series that leveraged the power of the internet (by way of word-of-mouth) to become almost legendary. I played the Wii one and loved it, but so many people have whispered about this one for decades... I think it's going to be a hit!
Good thing i buy game series I love and hope to not die like twice one digital one physical For everything i own that it can be on
Oh and also the lot of you going Ohhh i'll just wait for a sale You are the ones who contribute to the downfall of most games cause they actually only genuinly care most of the time if the game gets A BIG NUMBER in the day week or month it launches After that its not impressive to them anymore and they don't see potential sure they'll celebrate a milestone at some point But there minds are already made up
@Pigeon To be fair they fairly recently announced that the entire franchise sold 800k copies. There are 8 games (Klonoa 1&2 , 1 Wonderswan game, 3 GBA games, Beach Volleyball, and the Wii Remake)
So with an average 100k per release, it's actually a miracle they haven't given up on it yet. Hopefully being announced in a Nintendo direct and the Switch's success lets this game succeed in a big way.
Wow...5800 sales for the Wii game in the first week. I was part of that number. It's a real shame that Klonoa always has such a tough time. It's an incredible franchise that deserves way more love than it gets. Sadly, most people who are interested always say, "I'll pick it up in a couple years when the price drops" or "I'll try it out when it's on sale". And when those people eventually do try it on the cheap and love it, Namco hasn't made much money from the sales of the newcomers and a third game is never considered AGAIN, and Klonoa goes into limbo for another 10 years. Eventually everyone forgets about it and the cycle continues 😓
Well you know what that means. #saveKlonoa
To be honest, I never even heard of this series, prior to the Switch announcement trailer. Having said that, it did look like a pretty decent platformer, so I'll definitely get it at some point.
I'll happily support Klonoa and would love new games and a resurgence of the series
Barf. Easy cash for them but the consumer hungry masses though. Slap $40 pricetag with barely any work done and viola, it prints money!
"If my product sells well, we will make more."
Well, yeah, that's sort of how products and capitalism works.
Ohhhh I hope so as I've been eagerly awaiting these games for a while now.
@Paraka I knew somebody was going to say that 🙄
If this means we'll see Empire of Dreams and Dream Champ Tournament then so be it but c'mon Namco stop leaving Klonoa at number two, make a third game already from both Sony and Nintendo series for Switch and PC.
@RubyCarbuncle - Someone's gotta address that elephant in the room.
It's not like it's common practice to deny making more of a franchise a consumer base wants more of.
@samuelvictor
Yeah while i havent had much chance to play the GBA games or spinoffs i did love the original, the wii remake and klonoa 2 and will continue to sing their praises.
Hoping the switch version of this ends up good because these are fantastic platformers.
I’ll just buy this because I want to play it and see how things shake out.
@Mgalens The GBA games are definitely worth playing, high quality platforming. Not quite reaching the highs of the main 2 games but you wouldn't expect that for spin offs on a less pwoerful handheld. Definitely worth giving them a try and it would be nice if they got a re-release as a budget collection as has happened with other games recently from Konami and Capcom. Easy way to get a little extra money without much investment required.
I feel like the main reason the 2 Klonoa games on PS1 didn't sell as many copies as they deserved to, despite glowing reviews all round and developing a cult following is that 2D / 2.5D platformers were considered somewhat of an unfashionable and old fashioned genre during the PS1's lifetime - or somehow less worthy of a full retail price.
Mario 64 had been such a huge gamechanger and everyone was chasing that, tryign to recreate or even beat the experience - games like Crash, Spyro, Croc, etc etc were so much easier to market as Playstation's "Mario Killer" - often that was the entirety of their marketing.
Almost everyone I speak to about Klonoa remembers playing the demo on a magazine cover disc and thinking it was really fun and polished - but ultimately decided to put their pocket money into something they percieved as being more substanitial and limit pushing, in the hope that maybe Klonoa would eventually get a platinum release. Games like Rayman, Pandemonium etc sold far more units once the price was halved. Its sad, but it reflects the general attitude at the time.
I think if the Wii remake had been released on PS2/PS3 it would have sold better, as more Playstation owners were aware of the series, through magazine reviews and demo discs. Famously, despite the Wii selling an insane amount of consoles, the actual numbers of third party software that sold were pretty low, except for shovelware party games at a budget pricepoint. Many of the Wii owners only casually bought it for Wii Sports, maybe Wii Fit, Maybe Mario Kart if Nintendo were lucky. A hardcore niche series known only by Playstation owners was pretty dead in the water.
This release however is a different kettle of fish. By now, the game is pretty well known as a "hidden gem" kind of deal within the retro communities, and the Switch is definitely the console that the highest number of retro enthusiasts own... and also the more mainstream audience of Switch owners are a lot more likely to want a colourful, kid friendly mascot platformer than other systems. I actually feel like its most likely to sell more copies on Nintendo's console than on Sony or Microsoft's. How the times change!
On the Canadian Switch Eshop this game isn’t even listed yet. It’s only on the Nintendo store website when you search and even then it doesn’t have a release date yet despite releasing soon… and also when you wishlist via the Nintendo site it won’t appear on your console wishlist until the listing is actually present on the Switch Eshop smh.
This happens far too often with already announced games I’ve noticed. Nintendo needs to work on and fix this for their already confirmed/announced/upcoming games.
… Wun can only hope.
@samuelvictor
i think i did play some of the first GBA one on wiiu VC (the empire of dreams one) and remember finding it a fun solid platformer.
i would love to see a legacy collection like release with some of the spinoffs.
@Lony85 If you like platformers, you will love the 2 games coming in this release. They are literally 2 of the best platformers ever made.
Nice. I hope Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series does well.
Before that information was revealed, I preordered x2 Sony PlayStation 4, x2 Nintendo Switch, x2 Xbox Series X and x2 Sony PlayStation 5.
A chance for actual NEW Klonoa games? TAKE MY MONEY RIGHT NOW! they better be good too cause this series is pure platforming gold.. Even the GBA games are fantastic
@MidySeaCloud thinking that your full price purchase is going to hold up a game’s total expected revenue isn’t how those big numbers work. Die hard fans willing to buy 10 copies day one to show support are always a fraction of those numbers, and not what a publisher counts on anyway. They look for mass appeal. Mass appeal at full price or sale price is nevertheless mass appeal, and the green light to make more of something.
They need to patch the switch version has alot of issues
Now I really want a Klonoa Beach Volleyball remake after I read that headline
Look! Almost 2 years later. Nothing. Yeah, they arent going to make a new game or a sequel at all. Sadly.
